[Q] thinking of buy galaxy s - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
i am thinking of buying Samsung Galaxy S I9000..
is there any problems with it or something else that i should know before buy?
ty!
cp

Cons of the phone:
-Tends to lag unless u apply lagfix
-GPS failure of hardware and software
-reports of faulty internal SD cards means phone bricks easily
-software support by samsung is not the best
-software "KIES" (middleware that connects phone to PC for sync and firmware upgrade) works for some people but not all

-Tends to lag unless u apply lagfix
But not on very latest firmware
-GPS failure of hardware and software
A few report that
-reports of faulty internal SD cards means phone bricks easily
A specific batch Bell Canada had a problem .

New galaxy s will be out next month, best waiting for that.

Current Rogers user here with Bell phone with the latest firmware 2.2 Froyo, baseband JL2. I had experienced all these issues listed above with my first phone which was 2.1 eclair.
I have received my new phone for roughly 2 weeks and all those problematic issues have been addressed very well. My current phone is solid as a rock.
I have no lagfix applied yet it runs really smooth. My gps locks within 3 to 5 seconds. I don't use kies as I just enable Debugging to access the phone that way if I need to move, delete or copy files from it to my computer. Battery is as probably as good as I could get it considering the large screen and brightness levels. I don't expect it to last 2 or 3 days without a charge.
Keep in mind I have been running a custom ROM (Darky's 9.2) and updated to HardCore kernel.
It's a great phone in my opinion.

Darky is Froyo 2.2.1
All Froyo 2.2.1 has GPS and lag fixed.
All 2.2 and prior, do not (unless you use a 3rd party fix)
The GT-I9000 is pretty good. The variations with sdcard problems.. well have sdcard problems ;-)
And KIES sux. "We" just don't use it.

so what do you think? is it a good purchase?
i'm thinking to buy it from ebay about 300 euros..

Hello. I think the best phone now.
Custom ROM installed.
But my collegue after official update without problems too. GPS fix 5sec,no laging.

I dont agree. I did use all of them and applied lagfix on all of them. Issue not addressed. And you wont have new roms/firmwares out of the box or close to kies.
-GPS failure of hardware and software
A few report that
A lot we do. Lots of testing and nothing. Only gpsaids helps. Hardware problem and software issue.
-reports of faulty internal SD cards means phone bricks easily

That is correct, a few reported.

It is a good phone though but I wouldnt buy it again and I dont recomend it.
You really need to like the rom flashing and all of that.
Dont buy it. Go for an htc, I got my sgs for free, but I only would pay for a htc.

If you have some patience(!), for £300 this phone is the best android imho.
I mean patience for upgrading ROM, fixing problems, and generally maintaining your phone, and bear a bit of choppiness(even after lagfix). If you don't, just buy an iphone4 or htc hd7. Both are good as well, tho different os.
I love the screen, sound quality, android customisation, loads of free apps, and dedicated developers that makes our life easier.

i like aosp so much that .. i9000 wont be the 1st choice

[Q] Refund or Exchange?

My wife recently got a Galaxy S (I9000) and is far far from happy with it....
We tried the OneClickLagFix (improved lag, but still slow accessing the database), then moved onto Voodoo (improves lag significantly).
After this the part that seemed to be slowing the phone down was TouchWiz, so we swapped for LauncherProPlus (big improvement). Anything "Saumsung'd" on the phone is slow (dialer, contacts app, system menus (eg reboot, silent).
My question is ... Is this acceptable to have a 1Ghz phone that is slow, and needs multiple fixes and replacements? I personally have the HTC Desire, although not perfect (small internal memory) it out performs the Galaxy S (stock).
Has anyone gone back to T-Mobile, Vodafone etc and asked for a replacement?
Tony
If it still slow it must be something wrong with it.
What firmware do you use?
My phone is fast and i have no lag.
I use jpk firmware and have the latest oclf.
My girlfriend will buy a sgs also.
She like it more then my iphone and hers phone got stole yesterday.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
That is encouraging.. thanks
She is still on Stock 2.1, not ventured into the leaked ROMs yet.
Can I ask which Lag Fix you're using? My understanding is that the Voodoo lagfix cannot con-exist with Clockwork Recovery?
Cheers
I use ryanza oclf.
I use jpk firmware.
I did upgrading first from stock to jm1. Only that was an improvement.
Im waiting also for the real froyo, but jpk firmware working fine for me.
I do plan to use an other lagfix that is in development. I think that will be something sweat for this phone.

[Q] Why Official Froyo Being Called Back?!

Hi all,
As with the topic above, anyone knows the real reason with the call back of the official JPM firmware( or JP6)?
Read up on some sources, some said that its causes unstability. However, so far it seems okay to me in terms of stability and usabilty. Running on Darky's Steel Edition Rom 3.0. Seems good.
Cheers.

Just take a quick look at the changelist from JJ1 (SC02) and JPK, JPM / JP6 and compare these. All of these builds are from the same tree!
And did you ever take a look @ your logs (being on "stock" JPM / JP6)?
Yes, the customized ROMS are really really good. But all of 'em still have some (mostly minor) issues. I think Sammy has got to fix all (or most) of them before
they finally want to release it.
Btw, do you remember the first 2.2 releases from HTC
The only question is: Which way does less overall damage?
I think the final release will be almost identical as JPM/JP6 but Samsung has to patch the Kies so that it won't brick SGS so easily.
My Froyo 2.2 is unstable!!!
I for one really can't wait for the next "official" fix
My cold boot up times are way slower than the JG5 firmware and the phone suffers from forced closes sometimes and lags like hell!
It's just so annoying knowing what the phone is capable of but not having the firmware to back it up.
I hope the official froyo 2.2 release fixes all the bugs!
Well mine run better then ever on the official jp6. Granted root and lagfix is still needed becouse of the lovely rfs...

Your experience with the new 2.2 update?

Hi guys, im coming from a Desire and thinking of switching to the SGS because of the better hardware. Can anyone share what it's like to use it everyday with the 2.2 update already? Is it still that buggy?
I've played around with the SGS 2.1 and it is indeed slow, laggy and somewhat frustrating. Should I expect otherwise?
What about removing touchwiz? Does that bring everything up to speed?
Thanks!
Personally I feel it is slower and even more bug ed than eclair.
Desire should be better in trends of user experience......
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Is it just as slow running bare bones android? I am expecting the Galaxy S to be the first to receive the nexus S port of gingerbread
i find 2.2 way better speed wise, than 2.1
no more lag on multi upgrade from market
I seriously don't know where this lag everyone is talking about coming from, I've had my Galaxy S for 2 months now and so far my phone has been very snappy, ever since the first day I bought it when it was still running 2.1 ... the Samsung Galaxy S is one snappy phone if you ask me! it certainly can stand on it's own against the iPhone 4, which is considered by many to be the smoothest phone out there... I certainly have NO regrets purchasing the Galaxy S
i switched from desire to SGS for the following reasons:
1) music player can play FLAC's
2) divx xvid support and support for many video codecs ( use to use rock player on desire but still it was unable to play some other h264 formats)
3) nice giant super amoled screen
4) light weight and looks are better than desire
The only reason that i miss my desire is :
it was fast ( yeah SGS is a bit laggy even with custom roms and kernels) and it had flash with its camera. ( but camera of SGS is better than desire)
shranav,
How about the capacitive touch buttons? Were they easy to use coming from the Desire? I've tried them with the 2.1 rom and they seemed way unresponsive with the vibrate only registering after 2 -3 secs.
So can I assume that the experience will never be as good as the one in my desire?
oh and does HTC IME work for the SGS?? This is the only keyboard I use because it's easy to add your own dictionary

Should be? Is this from experience of you're just talking out of your ass? Probably the latter. I've been using Doc rom with ext4 lagfix for the last 10 days and I have nothing but positive things to say about my SGS now. The phone is hella good with 2.2.

Same here, fantastic screen, light, good sound for phone...
Of course KIES stink, but there are plenty alternatives...
The only problem I had with 2.1 was that it forgot where the SD cards where too often, and I had to reboot to use access photos or music...
Upgraded to 2.2 and no more "memory" problems...
I bought this mobile a week back with 2.1... Two days back upgraded to froyo... Better than 2.1.. Lot of new options.. Google voice works well... Speed both versions almost same.... Kies sucks in 2.1...but improved with froyo..

I really don't know what the problem is for some people.
I have 2.1 and upgraded via Keis to 2.2
I was always in the habit of resetting (off and on again) my phone at least once a day. This is something I have done with all phones.
Now with the new Active Applications program in 2.2 I don't do this as much. I just close any programs using this.
I have never suffered lag on the SGS. The only problem I had was the inbuilt email software is really slow. This is not a big problem as I use the gmail software for all my mobile mail.

I feel the same. A couple weeks after getting my 9000M (with 2.1 JH2) I decided to try the OCLF (lag fix) and it made some things quicker or snappier, Android Market was noticeably faster. It made some things worse like menu transitions/animations were really choppy after the lag fix and I would get random short hangs every now and again. A couple weeks after applying the lag fix my phone would not boot (stuck on Galaxy S screen then black screen). Luckily the phone wasn't completely dead. I had to do a factory reset and have been running it stock since (probably 10 weeks now). I don't know that I am experience this lag that people talk about. It runs pretty smoothly.
2.2 and Voodoo and every is A-OK!

if you go for it, i suggest a custom rom if you want a snappy phone
stock roms suffer from lag, especially when you install many apps
it is really easy to flash a custom rom (or even just a custom kernel)

I've had 2 SGS so far.
First, had no 3 button menus, but was very quick, no lag. Was able to root and lag fix to improve speed further no bother
Second, my current one. HAS 3bm, but massive lag. Unable to root by normal methods (also hard to verify if phone was rooted) also unable to lag fix
Seems to correlate with what people are saying. You saying there is no lag, and others having no end of problems.
Personally, on this phone I've missed calls with the screen taking too long to change.
I should note that my first phone was network unlocked but this one is tied to Three ireland with their modifications etc to it :-(
They are one in the same.

Hey all, I updated to 2.2 last night, and have been impressed since first reboot. I have applied oclf as well and the phone has not lagged once. I suggest you also look at the minfree settings in oclf, as the autokill defaults for the sgs are sub par. I found that minfree adjustment has also had a major impact on the performance of the phone. We need to remember that out of the factory (our fresh from factory firmware upgrade) these phone do not run at their best and they need to be tweaked to see full potential. Cheers. H

I read somewhere (could of been in xda) that enabling usb debugging helps with the lag issues. Don't know how that works but just throwing out there.

Should I buy a Motorolla Atrix ?

My samsung galaxy S is incredibly slow, I can't upgrade it via Kies, and I am scared to flash b/c of the faulty SD cards (my phone resets / freezes just when updating apps for god sakes)
Does anyone know if the Atrix will be able to be flashed and stuff? I heard about a locked bootloader
can anyone confirm ?
To get acquainted with the flashing process just start by reflashing the same rom as you're currently running now.
If you're afraid now while having a crappy sgs what makes you think you won't be while flashing your brand new atrix?
If I had the cash i would change phone every 6 months. I dig the atrix concept but i think it is to soon. Its still to weird.
I do a monthly flash of my sgs and am still happy with it. If you take the plunge and flash yours too i know you'll be happy too.
Have fun with the stock roms.
Motorola devices now have locked bootloaders and do not allow custom ROMs.
The Droid 1 and Droid 2 in Europe were subject to such locks and no homebrew roms have been made.
Also, you think samsung wont come out with a better handset than motorola? Samsung are going to relase their dual core orion and thats what im waiting for. Forget tegra.
This is kinda like cutting a whole leg because you have a log toe-nail and can't fit your shoe...
First, you should check out why Kies prevent you from upgrading. Issue with driver? Usb (Or usb Drivers)? Hardwaire issue with the computer you're using? if you can, try installing kies on a clean system and see if this resolve the issue.
As for custom rom, Odin only need the drivers for Download mode and then you'll be able to install clockworkmod recovery and flash from a zip file. Only need Recovery 2e prior to install it (or another compatible kernel flashed trough odin).
And motorola is known to be locked :|
The SGS is a very good phone, if you are having issues then you likely should look into following some of the advice on this thread.
That being said, i had a live demo of the atrix at my store and.... **** IS IT NICE! i am definately thinking of switching phones, it is a LOT faster, has a HUGE battery, better resolution on the screen (not LED tho) and you can REALLY multitask on it. Plus you can plug it into your TV and use it as a computer, multitasking with multiple videos running, games, you name it. the things a beast!
The one problem i found was it got pretty hot after only about 20 minutes of use. the rep said they were working on it, not sure how you can fix that other than turning down the power. Given the choice between either phone tho, the atrix wins. Its just got more power.
the only ones that really had faulty sd cards were the i9000m' is that your phone if not i would flash doc's js3 or jpy
and speedmod or vodoo kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883820
Seems if you are having problems then you should take the phone back, simple as that. My phone is superfast at everything and has no issues to speak of. Custom roms make it so much faster along with lagfixes and kernels.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Simple answer is no.
There are rumours that the Motorola Atrix suffers from a power management issue that is hardware related.
Long answer, as others have said, get to know the SGS and don't be scared of rooting it and using a custom ROM.
It is a very good phone, it's just a shame that developers have had to fix the problems Samsung couldn't be bothered with.
Motorola use what is known as an 'e-fuse' and that has to be disabled before the phone can use custom kernels & ROMs.
If you really want an Atrix, wait for it to hit the market and see what users report.
I get the feeling that Manufacturers are rushing phones to the market because the competition with Android phones is rapildy growing.
This will mean that more phones with issues will surface and I for one will not rush out to replace my SGS.

Well because of the faulty SD card issue on SGS -- mine is one of them. If I flash and stuff the re-writing to the SD card is what causes it, so I almost KNOW my phone will brick because it's faulty to begin with. I don't think the Motorolla phone will be like this (in fact most phones aren't)

Unfortunately I have an i9000m phone
which is why I want to switch
I'm thinking of selling it for like $400 then just paying the remainder in cash when the Atrix comes out
I KNOW the SGS is a good phone, don't get me wrong, but the i9000m is a piece of sh!t that will inevitably die on me ( i dont have the patience to wait months for a replacement )
I just need something that flies, I don't care about flashing roms because the Atrix will be faster than any SGS anyways. I only wanted to flash the SGS because mine is ridiculously slow, but if I flash it, I will destroy the phone probably because of the faulty SD card.
Have you tried to format the sd-cards? And i do mean the stock galaxy way. Backup all necessary files to your computer and just wipe them clean. I have had some instability problems in the past and this resolved it andb by the way the sgs is (in my opinion) as unbrickable as it gets. I have fcuked mine up

I also have SGS and i'm happy with it ....but motorola is a beast of phone and i would like to buy it but as it has locked bootloader i will rather wait for dual-core phone from samsung than buy atrix.
P.S. motorola spotted overheating issue on atrix and they said that it is going to be fixed until launch

Yes

Nexus S is probably better at this time..
Well, i have one, wich is bricked at the moment :-(.
When you are using its great, yes its the best, but SGS fails badly in one HUGE thing, at least for me, USB connection to PC, this is very, very bad and for me drops the score for SGS from 10/10 to like 8/10.
For a 600$ phone, USB connection should be perfect, ill go a lithe further and tell you that for that price you shouldnt have to be flashing firmwares and lag fixing your phone UNLESS you wanted too, that for me drops even more the score of SGS to like 6.5-7/10.
Ill tell you one thing, SGS2 is on the way, but ill think a LOT before buying it, ill make sure these basics things are ok in the SGS2, cause im very disapointed with SGS.

LoL, that's a good one. I know a bunch of people who have SGS - not even one of them had any USB problems, I also haven't seen a lot of threads here on xda about the problem.
I never ever had problems with USB connection (did have with Kies, but that was Kies problem) and I had 5 different firmwares (no manual flashing, 2 upgrades over Kies and first two were done by service).
Maybe you have defected phone, I don't know, but I think you're a noob and don't know how to use your phone and pc or you've just fu*ked up something somewhere.

Exactly. I have had my phone replaced because of a dead internal SD card. I have had lagging problems, but not as bad as some others have mentioned. My GPS works sporadically. Because of these problems I would have to say no. But, I haven't tried any other Android phones, so I don't know what others are like.
An expensive phone like this, or any phone with this hardware for that matter, should not have problems like this. A quality phone should have no major hardware problems.
I think that manufacturers can, at times, release a product that is not ready for prime time so that they can make the profit from that device. If they take the time to properly test it, they will not make as much money as fast.
Will I but another Samsung phone? I do not know, but I do know I will definitely look at others before I make my decision.
Ian
Usb problem?
Well that's very few that has and 99% of them has bad drivers installed.
There are a few bad sgs with different hardware foult and usb is one if them.
This is common on all hardware.
This is a advanced phone and it gas a few bugs like all other advanced phone. If you don't want them you need to buy a basic phone.

I agree that this phone is cheaply made, but design of this phone is realy cool I think and I never had problems with USB connection. I think it's feals cheep becous phone is wery light. But i think the price is rigth, becouse we get powerfull phone with Super amoled screen. Other phones has werry good built quality, they haven't SAMOLED and they are not so powerfull as SGS. Other phones has their + and -like SGS. And I have no lag at my SGS. It's not rooted and there is no any lag fix. I just managing running aplications in background. I think it's really good phone.
sorry for my bad english
Well i guess we must see the sgs on a different way.
On 2.1 it was laggy and things worked bad sometimes.
On 2.2 things got alot better.
On 2.2.1 things is very good. Not much lag and things works good.
You also get more memory.
The 2.2.1 version should be the first version that shipped with the sgs.
I think they rushed the release of it, but they all do that.
But the fact is that sgs is the best and the most powerful android phone today.

The htc desire hd is very very cool, i had it for a short while and was very impressed, but due to gettin an upgrade soon i sent it back and am stickin with my galaxy s, i love this phone.
As someone stated earlier we shouldnt really need to be doin lagfixs and stuff like that, but with every phone does come a few problems, and its handy to have so many people helpin out and makin roms for us to enjoy, i have stock 2.2.1 and dont actually need a lagfix or anything.
Hopefully the galaxy s 2 will be bigger and better than this
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
