My wife recently got a Galaxy S (I9000) and is far far from happy with it....
We tried the OneClickLagFix (improved lag, but still slow accessing the database), then moved onto Voodoo (improves lag significantly).
After this the part that seemed to be slowing the phone down was TouchWiz, so we swapped for LauncherProPlus (big improvement). Anything "Saumsung'd" on the phone is slow (dialer, contacts app, system menus (eg reboot, silent).
My question is ... Is this acceptable to have a 1Ghz phone that is slow, and needs multiple fixes and replacements? I personally have the HTC Desire, although not perfect (small internal memory) it out performs the Galaxy S (stock).
Has anyone gone back to T-Mobile, Vodafone etc and asked for a replacement?
Tony
If it still slow it must be something wrong with it.
What firmware do you use?
My phone is fast and i have no lag.
I use jpk firmware and have the latest oclf.
My girlfriend will buy a sgs also.
She like it more then my iphone and hers phone got stole yesterday.

That is encouraging.. thanks
She is still on Stock 2.1, not ventured into the leaked ROMs yet.
Can I ask which Lag Fix you're using? My understanding is that the Voodoo lagfix cannot con-exist with Clockwork Recovery?
Cheers
I use ryanza oclf.
I use jpk firmware.
I did upgrading first from stock to jm1. Only that was an improvement.
Im waiting also for the real froyo, but jpk firmware working fine for me.
I do plan to use an other lagfix that is in development. I think that will be something sweat for this phone.

Hi I already hate my Samsung Galaxy S I9000, no matter what your guys do always become slow and slow, I have a iPhone 4 is nothing to compare.
I am thinking to buy a HTC.
The Questios is any one here try it to flash the FW for the TAB over Galaxy S? I am willing to try it.
There is any risk of full brick withour recover?
Any results???
It's not possible to simply flash the firmware from an entirely different device, sorry. It would take work to port it over, and if you don't know how, then that's not going to happen.
If you try the latest Froyo releases JPM/JPA/JP6 which run pretty well already, and once Voodoo for Froyo comes out very soon, I can't see how you are dissatisfied with the performance.
If you need something fast right now, throw on JM9 with Voodoo.
And while you may feel that the iPhone is smoother at times, that's simply because it's doing much less.
Actually I am running JP6 (Kies) with OCLF, but I will try ir JM9 + Voodoo as you mention.
Thanks....
Really I dont want a lot of app running and services in background I just want to switch from one to other fast without lag. I think this is going to be difficult with this device.
But thanks to every dev, here that work hard in order to make this device smooth.
I installed jp6 with oclf - OMG it was slow.
Voodoo + JJ1 is so much faster its not even funny.
You can either wait for Supercurio to finish off his Voodoo kernel for froyo, or you can try the new z4mod. But really, I'm running JPM with no lagfix, and while it's not super-speedy, it's certainly fairly quick in most tasks (NewsRob is borderline acceptable). It's definitely much faster than the older firmwares.
Hi all,
As with the topic above, anyone knows the real reason with the call back of the official JPM firmware( or JP6)?
Read up on some sources, some said that its causes unstability. However, so far it seems okay to me in terms of stability and usabilty. Running on Darky's Steel Edition Rom 3.0. Seems good.
Cheers.

Just take a quick look at the changelist from JJ1 (SC02) and JPK, JPM / JP6 and compare these. All of these builds are from the same tree!
And did you ever take a look @ your logs (being on "stock" JPM / JP6)?
Yes, the customized ROMS are really really good. But all of 'em still have some (mostly minor) issues. I think Sammy has got to fix all (or most) of them before
they finally want to release it.
Btw, do you remember the first 2.2 releases from HTC
The only question is: Which way does less overall damage?
I think the final release will be almost identical as JPM/JP6 but Samsung has to patch the Kies so that it won't brick SGS so easily.
My Froyo 2.2 is unstable!!!
I for one really can't wait for the next "official" fix
My cold boot up times are way slower than the JG5 firmware and the phone suffers from forced closes sometimes and lags like hell!
It's just so annoying knowing what the phone is capable of but not having the firmware to back it up.
I hope the official froyo 2.2 release fixes all the bugs!
Well mine run better then ever on the official jp6. Granted root and lagfix is still needed becouse of the lovely rfs...

Hi guys, im coming from a Desire and thinking of switching to the SGS because of the better hardware. Can anyone share what it's like to use it everyday with the 2.2 update already? Is it still that buggy?
I've played around with the SGS 2.1 and it is indeed slow, laggy and somewhat frustrating. Should I expect otherwise?
What about removing touchwiz? Does that bring everything up to speed?
Thanks!
Personally I feel it is slower and even more bug ed than eclair.
Desire should be better in trends of user experience......
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Is it just as slow running bare bones android? I am expecting the Galaxy S to be the first to receive the nexus S port of gingerbread
i find 2.2 way better speed wise, than 2.1
no more lag on multi upgrade from market
I seriously don't know where this lag everyone is talking about coming from, I've had my Galaxy S for 2 months now and so far my phone has been very snappy, ever since the first day I bought it when it was still running 2.1 ... the Samsung Galaxy S is one snappy phone if you ask me! it certainly can stand on it's own against the iPhone 4, which is considered by many to be the smoothest phone out there... I certainly have NO regrets purchasing the Galaxy S
i switched from desire to SGS for the following reasons:
1) music player can play FLAC's
2) divx xvid support and support for many video codecs ( use to use rock player on desire but still it was unable to play some other h264 formats)
3) nice giant super amoled screen
4) light weight and looks are better than desire
The only reason that i miss my desire is :
it was fast ( yeah SGS is a bit laggy even with custom roms and kernels) and it had flash with its camera. ( but camera of SGS is better than desire)
shranav,
How about the capacitive touch buttons? Were they easy to use coming from the Desire? I've tried them with the 2.1 rom and they seemed way unresponsive with the vibrate only registering after 2 -3 secs.
So can I assume that the experience will never be as good as the one in my desire?
oh and does HTC IME work for the SGS?? This is the only keyboard I use because it's easy to add your own dictionary

Should be? Is this from experience of you're just talking out of your ass? Probably the latter. I've been using Doc rom with ext4 lagfix for the last 10 days and I have nothing but positive things to say about my SGS now. The phone is hella good with 2.2.

Same here, fantastic screen, light, good sound for phone...
Of course KIES stink, but there are plenty alternatives...
The only problem I had with 2.1 was that it forgot where the SD cards where too often, and I had to reboot to use access photos or music...
Upgraded to 2.2 and no more "memory" problems...
I bought this mobile a week back with 2.1... Two days back upgraded to froyo... Better than 2.1.. Lot of new options.. Google voice works well... Speed both versions almost same.... Kies sucks in 2.1...but improved with froyo..

I really don't know what the problem is for some people.
I have 2.1 and upgraded via Keis to 2.2
I was always in the habit of resetting (off and on again) my phone at least once a day. This is something I have done with all phones.
Now with the new Active Applications program in 2.2 I don't do this as much. I just close any programs using this.
I have never suffered lag on the SGS. The only problem I had was the inbuilt email software is really slow. This is not a big problem as I use the gmail software for all my mobile mail.

I feel the same. A couple weeks after getting my 9000M (with 2.1 JH2) I decided to try the OCLF (lag fix) and it made some things quicker or snappier, Android Market was noticeably faster. It made some things worse like menu transitions/animations were really choppy after the lag fix and I would get random short hangs every now and again. A couple weeks after applying the lag fix my phone would not boot (stuck on Galaxy S screen then black screen). Luckily the phone wasn't completely dead. I had to do a factory reset and have been running it stock since (probably 10 weeks now). I don't know that I am experience this lag that people talk about. It runs pretty smoothly.
2.2 and Voodoo and every is A-OK!

htc_ime works
if you go for it, i suggest a custom rom if you want a snappy phone
stock roms suffer from lag, especially when you install many apps
it is really easy to flash a custom rom (or even just a custom kernel)
sorry if its not right place to ask but
whats a diffrent between GT i9000 and Galaxy s i9000
mine says GT I9000

I've had 2 SGS so far.
First, had no 3 button menus, but was very quick, no lag. Was able to root and lag fix to improve speed further no bother
Second, my current one. HAS 3bm, but massive lag. Unable to root by normal methods (also hard to verify if phone was rooted) also unable to lag fix
Seems to correlate with what people are saying. You saying there is no lag, and others having no end of problems.
Personally, on this phone I've missed calls with the screen taking too long to change.
I should note that my first phone was network unlocked but this one is tied to Three ireland with their modifications etc to it :-(
They are one in the same.

Hey all, I updated to 2.2 last night, and have been impressed since first reboot. I have applied oclf as well and the phone has not lagged once. I suggest you also look at the minfree settings in oclf, as the autokill defaults for the sgs are sub par. I found that minfree adjustment has also had a major impact on the performance of the phone. We need to remember that out of the factory (our fresh from factory firmware upgrade) these phone do not run at their best and they need to be tweaked to see full potential. Cheers. H

I read somewhere (could of been in xda) that enabling usb debugging helps with the lag issues. Don't know how that works but just throwing out there.

I have an SGS and I have noticed the lag, not as bad as others, but it is noticeable, before the lagfix.
Why does our phone and not others have this problem? In layman's terms please, I am not too familiar with phone tech speak yet.
Also, I know there are a few different fixes out, which ones are better?
Thanks,
Ian
Lots of people put the lag down to the filing system. Samsung chose to implement their own (RFS i believe) and not the android/linux versions.
I use RyanZa's OCLF on mine and its brilliant, it makes the phone use EXT2 file structure (a proper Linux file system). I used it on 2.1 Eclair and now on 2.2 Froyo. I cant say i've tried the other lag fixes so my opinion may be a little biased but my phone is super quick so i'm happy with it

Voodoo lagfix converts the file system to EXT4 which is faster than EXT2. I m rocking my Galaxy S with Darky's Rom & Voodoo lagfix enabled.

PS, I wasn't complainging about my speed, just curious as to why our phones have this problem and others don't.
The thoughts are that RFS has serious issues, however, in JPX, it seems to be fixed. Therefore these days I recommend using JPX rather than switching filesystem.
Note that not all phones suffer from lag. Why, I have no clue.
My family has 3 SGSs (i9000M) none of which have this problem. I installed a lag fix on my phone a while back to see what the fus was all about and it actually SIGNIFICANTLY hurt my performance. After removing it, everything went back to snappy speeds.

True, the problem is the filesystem which simply 'gets stuck' and forces the applications to queue when there is too much activity (for example when the Market starts installing apps...).
The 2.2.1 firmware seems to have fixed this issue, at least on my I9000. (Not sure what Samsung have changed, one would have to check the RFS driver in the kernel for that.)
Thanks all for the info.
It seems to me that Samsung has really dropped the ball with this phone. The SD card issue, the lag issue and the GPS issue.
I know that new technology can be a bit of a mess, but shoudln';t a manufacturer, especiallyu one as big as Samsung test their pruducts properly before coming to market?
Is it a matter of "Yes, we know there are problems with the phone, but we will make more money if we come to market now with a peice of crap"?
Or is it just that they made a mistake?
Ian
i have also upgraded to froyo stock 2.2.1. No lag so far. Seems like i was facing a slight lag when i was on stock 2.2.

Cons of the phone:
-Tends to lag unless u apply lagfix
-GPS failure of hardware and software
-reports of faulty internal SD cards means phone bricks easily
-software support by samsung is not the best
-software "KIES" (middleware that connects phone to PC for sync and firmware upgrade) works for some people but not all
-Tends to lag unless u apply lagfix
But not on very latest firmware
-GPS failure of hardware and software
A few report that
-reports of faulty internal SD cards means phone bricks easily

Current Rogers user here with Bell phone with the latest firmware 2.2 Froyo, baseband JL2. I had experienced all these issues listed above with my first phone which was 2.1 eclair.
I have received my new phone for roughly 2 weeks and all those problematic issues have been addressed very well. My current phone is solid as a rock.
I have no lagfix applied yet it runs really smooth. My gps locks within 3 to 5 seconds. I don't use kies as I just enable Debugging to access the phone that way if I need to move, delete or copy files from it to my computer. Battery is as probably as good as I could get it considering the large screen and brightness levels. I don't expect it to last 2 or 3 days without a charge.
Keep in mind I have been running a custom ROM (Darky's 9.2) and updated to HardCore kernel.
It's a great phone in my opinion.
Darky is Froyo 2.2.1
All Froyo 2.2.1 has GPS and lag fixed.
All 2.2 and prior, do not (unless you use a 3rd party fix)
The GT-I9000 is pretty good. The variations with sdcard problems.. well have sdcard problems ;-)
And KIES sux. "We" just don't use it.
so what do you think? is it a good purchase?
i'm thinking to buy it from ebay about 300 euros..
Hello. I think the best phone now.
Custom ROM installed.
But my collegue after official update without problems too. GPS fix 5sec,no laging.

I dont agree. I did use all of them and applied lagfix on all of them. Issue not addressed. And you wont have new roms/firmwares out of the box or close to kies.
-GPS failure of hardware and software

A lot we do. Lots of testing and nothing. Only gpsaids helps. Hardware problem and software issue.

If you have some patience(!), for £300 this phone is the best android imho.
I mean patience for upgrading ROM, fixing problems, and generally maintaining your phone, and bear a bit of choppiness(even after lagfix). If you don't, just buy an iphone4 or htc hd7. Both are good as well, tho different os.
I love the screen, sound quality, android customisation, loads of free apps, and dedicated developers that makes our life easier.
i like aosp so much that .. i9000 wont be the 1st choice
