Yesterday I got my NC, I am living in France so have to order it from amazon, takes about 5 days.
1st thing I notice it is much heavier than my sony PRS600, one hand holding is tough for me, for some reasons I need all my handheld dev to be light weight as much as possible, NC is however acceptable.
Screen is great, this is the main reason I pick it, NC doesn't disappoint me, and touch is very sensitive and accurate.
hardware, this isn't much to say, for that price I guess it's a great deal.The issues are buttons and SD slot, no classic android hardware buttons really troubles me after rooting, and which genius come out with that SD slot design?
OS, sort of sucks, don't know it's the 2.1's problem or what, everything is a bit slow and lag, I hope 2.2 will fix them abit like your guys said, I really do.
software: as a ereader it's original softwares work fine, reading is good, pdf is a bit lag, video play back is good, but 720p video can only play smoothy in MP4 format, only problem is my comic books don't works on NC.I guess I need find a good app for this.
So last night I root the NC, using the auto nooter it wasn't hard at all, but there is a strange bug, after I reboot the NC, the Youtube stop working, can't even run it. I do remeber it worked fine just after rooting.
Another thing is some app on my NC have no sounds, sometime they works fine after a reboot, but after a while they always stop making any sounds, the OS sounds are still there, only not works in apps.
Over all I think I am happy with the new toy, gona buy one for my mom too, just wait for I fix the sounds and install Plants vs Zombies for her

Just purchased 1 for my wife 2 nights ago. I ended up playing with it too much that she suggested that I go ahead and buy one for myself, so I did. Planning to root it shortly.
I was really looking to get a galaxy tab but after playing with the nook I was pretty satisfied. I just could not justify spending another $300 or so for the tab, considering CES is also around the corner and new products will probably be unveiled. Looking to get a new phone with the $300 I saved. I am using an HD2 on Android at the moment and will wait till after the new year.
The Nook will be used mainly for reading, some surfing, maybe a few movies. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

I tried ACV, it always show me run out of memory after a while, and it's really running slow

I use astro myself, but strangly I can't find youtube in app folder, all the other app are there....

my friend use a HTC desire HD, he gives me that game, don't test it myself, cuz NC is my 1st android dev, I wana install it after all the things are done,besides u need 2.2 OS to run it, it's a port from PC.
Maybe its me but I like the SD card slot. I mean its without a doubt not that easy to put it in and take it out but atleast its better than it being completely in the machine and unable to extract if it doesnt eject
as far as youtube... I think its easier using zeam but thats just me XD

I have the same exact problem. I don't think it's an issue with all of them just some. Does this mean it's a hardware problem?
Okay guys I currently do not own a Nook Color, I have been reading about it and how it can be rooted and used as regular tablet, and I have also been reading about the resetting problems. The question is would you recommend me buying one or should I spent a few more dollars and go with a regular tablet??

I actually pulled the trigger yesterday and am having zip problems after rooting it and using it constantly. If you follow the direction on the nookdev website and read through all the threads for workarounds for xlcommon problems, it's perfect. For me, spareparts and setcpu with seam launcher with root explorer, its a pretty sweet tablet. Also, Cyanogen mod 7 is worked on right now.. so I'd say buy it!! Galaxy tab is just thick and awkward.

Short answer, yes. I was worried about the rebooting/resetting problems as well, and so far it's been perfect.
I had it in my hand and I liked the way it felt in my hand. I liked the design better than the Galaxy Tab. The price is just perfect. So I been thinking about getting one. How long does the battery last with mild use? I remember reading 8 hours but I know that's not true on real live basis.
It really depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you want to spend modifying your tab. Seeing as you're posting here I would guess that you have at least a minimum desire to tweak whatever you get.

If money is not an issue for you.....wait a couple months and grab one of the new tablets hitting the market like a Xoom, G Slate, or whatever.
If you're on a budget, the Nook Color is a nice alternative. But there are quality issues (many a Nook Color has been returned) and it requires you to tinker with the device quite a bit. If you enjoy that process it's a great device.

Camera, GPS are not needed since I own a Vibrant. And yes I am a flashaholic I love flashing ROMs and tweaking as much as I can. So this does sound tasty :]
8 hours is about right. Of course if you play alot games and videos it will kill more battery. But it's not going to go from 8 hours to 1 hour from playing music, internet, games.
Yeah, reading, email and light web browsing 8 hours.

My husband is sorry he got me a Nook for Christmas
...although he was quite pleased last night when I told him I couldn't sleep with my Nook anymore, since I guess I have to charge it sometimes! Seriously, the Nook is AMAZING and it is painless to root. I rooted my Nook a few days after Christmas and was scared to death that I was going to break it, but got brave because I wanted both my NookBooks and Kindle books on the same device. I've installed apps, downloaded more NookBooks and haven't had any issues (not even the dreaded reboot). I LOVE my Nook!
The NC has the best screen under $500. And, from my research, it's appears to have better stability than some of the tempting off-brand tablets out there. (though there appears to be some QC issues).
I was soooo ready to get an IPAD, saw the Nook in a store, and wow, the 7 inch form factor just made sense!
The build quality is solid, and like the previous poster said, it's very forgiving, and a joy to tweak.
Best 250 I have spent in a long time!

Anyway, I have to say I got a book and I am extremely pleased with it so far.
Welcome to the nook color club. I have had one from the beginning and love it. So far two friends have also purchased one after seeing mine. Had to root it for them. Great buy for the price. Hope you enjoy it.
I have gone for days without charging with light use....
I will pick one up if they get the bluetooth stack working. I really would love to sync a bluetooth gps to the nook! I need something cheap so i can take on my trip to europe to book hostels/trains at night!

Today I bought "5 very good reasons to punch a dolphin in the mouth ( and other useful guides )" which is a collection of comics. I'm using my nook colour with honeycomb and the nook app to read it and it's almost impossible. The pictures take up about 1/3 of the page. I highly doubt there are any solutions to this issue but I figured I may as well ask. Anyone else encountered this?

ok, same problem w/ the same book.
I'm not so sure it's a problem with the NookColor running a non-stock config though...
I went as far as to install the Nook app for PC and it's still tough to read. I even dropped the computer resolution to 800x600 and it's still hard to read.
I emailed B&N for a refund and was told the nookBooks weren't refundable. They suggested that I could pinch to zoom to enlarge it but that doesn't work.
anyone else have any ideas?
Hi, This is probably a n00by question, but do headphones work on the ICS rom builds yet?
Yes, I can confirm that they work on CM9 Alpha 2 for the TouchPad. You need to plug in the headphones before starting any music/movies, etc that will use the headphones. If you plug them in after the music/movies started they will not work for some strange reason.

P.S. My Mother works graveyard and has CM9 Alpha 2 on hers and she loves watching movies/tv shows at night when they have nothing to do so she uses her headphones without problems.

Your very welcome and my sympathies to your Mother! LOL! Seriously though as I know someone that has an iPod Touch 4 and I have played around with it. I am not impressed with the OS on that one. I really do prefer Android thanks.

Haha, I have to say I like the iPhone XD mainly because I only use it for texting/fb/emails/music and tethering. I have to say though I find the apps on the iphone/ipad seem to be more finished than the android versions. But then theres the argument of them being restrictive (which is true lets not fight there )

The short answer is: Yes, it's worth it. The difference between stock 2.1 and either Cyanogenmod 10.1 or Carbon is like night and day. Just being able to configure the homescreens the way you want is worth the small effort to install a new recovery and ROM on the HD+. You get a whole range of options of how you interact with your tablet (PIE, HALO, ribbons, etc.).
I've installed both CM10.1 and Carbon and prefer Carbon, but that's more of a personal thing. One nice thing is that my Galaxy Nexus is on Carbon, so I have just one interface for both of my mobile devices.
If you are not sure if you want to change the Nook, download the SDCard only version of CM10.1 it works great and will not touch your installed system.

Oh GOD yes!!! I just did it to my Plus and L♥VE it. I used this [NookHD+] CM10.1 native emmc install updated 07/06 but [NOOK HD/HD+] Installing CyanogenMod 10.1 for Dummies is also easy to follow.
It makes the device so much easier to use. Its like my Galaxy Note 2 but bigger and I can now install the tablet app versions of the apps I have like SketchBook Pro. Win,win. :victory: The only two apps I lost were the Nook and Starbucks. Since my main reading app is Moon+ Reader Pro I didn't care and only sideloaded the Nook app to see if I could. I pay for my coffee with the Starbucks app on my phone so I don't need it on the Plus.
Just read through everything a few times until you're comfortable. It takes about 30 minutes or less.
I actually installed it twice because I wasn't feeling well the first time and was frustrated with the stock, it took wayyyyy to long. So the next day I reverted back to stock and did it again. Just to be sure (you know friends are going to ask me to root theirs). Honestly, easy peasy.
Once you do it you will wonder why you waited so long.
Now if I can get them to add the screen navigation buttons like I have on my Note 2, to get from screen to screen without swiping, I would be really happy. (hint, hint)
It took me two days before I setup the hybrid version. After a week or so I installed Carbon. It's great. My daughter left her's stock. I have no desire to return. Do the SD boot and check it out.

If you ask me CM 10.1 makes the Nook HD worth having, It runs as well, there are a few minor bugs in the scheme of things with none a show stopper, battery life is good, performance is good, movies music all play well, the Nook App still works plus you get the full tablet experience and customization. I have no plans to ever return to stock, unless a warranty situation arrives. I am running CM 10.1 in emmc, I never even bothered with running it on an SD card first. I had my nook less than a day before I put CM 10.1 on it.

For myself, the answer is definitely a yes. It has much more functionalities after flashing to cm10.1. However, if you are only interested in reading book, web-browsing and sending emails. It may not be a bad idea to keep the stock rom as it's more stable and power efficient.
i was quite hesitant to do the cyangen mod because i had no experience with android devices. i started with sd card and then took the leap to native install.
benefits:
all google play apps
automatic backup of all to google
quick updating to new verions without losing any data
you can still download the nook app if you want
in short - it's great. don't bother with the dual boot solution.
especially now since the hd+ is being phased out by b&n - a versatile android os on top of good hardware is the way to go.
It is definitely worth it. I had stock os with "app from outside source enabled" mod on it for a while to test drive it. I had alot of my apps from Amazon store so I wanted to make sure everything was ok. Since this solution was great, it still felt a little bit limited so I said to myself, why not just go all the way since I was keeping it.
I did it and never looked back.
For those who've mentioned Carbon, is it available for the HD as well?
I've got the CM10.1 hummingbird ROM running off sdcard on my HD; I was going to install it to internal today but if Carbon is available for HD I'll test it out first.

If you look in the development forum you will see carbon is available for both HD and HD+ on emmc.

I have tried both and got back to stock as it was good enough for what I do with the hd+. I just added the nova launcher so it feels like any other tablet and it has all the options I need.
I'm not saying that cm or cb afe bad or anything but I'm happy with my stock+nova launcher

Yeah...I found v8 of the ROM after the two+ hour search/parse forums yesterday. Basically had enough time to install it and do some basic configuration before I collapsed, so I forgot to come back and delete this post .
On the plus side, sleep battery life is excellent! Unplugged the Nook immediately after installing the ROM and syncing my main Google account. It dropped 6% while I was configuring some apps and settings, but did not drop at all while in sleep mode overnight.
Now time to start researching, then testing and building . Would anyone be interested in a working Scheme interpreter or nano editor?

I was a stock user with Nova for a week and found it too limited. I guess it depends what you want to do with it.
I sometimes run Stock from an SD card on my HD+. When running stock, you can access all your apps without another launcher. From the Apps screen simultaneously touch "Apps" and hold down Vol down.
