So I just spoke to a friend who is a rep a T-Mobile, and he told me that they recently announced internally that they will be adding bigger and better data plans in the very near future.
He said the push is due to the 5gb limit being too low for so many users, and the 200mb plan being way too small.
Just thought you guys would want to know. If you ask any telephone rep at T-Mobile they will confirm it.
I knew there was a reason I was holding off activating my SIM. ;-) Any idea when they will officially announce the new data plans?

You can change the plan in the future. T-Mobile is less likely to extend the contract upon changing plan (except promotion one).

Ah that's a question I had, you can hold off on activating the SIM and still use the Streak 7 normally? I briefly had an AT&T tab and I could even use Google Maps without activation!
I am currently using my S7 with a non-activated SIM inserted. I can pick up a 4G signal, just can't use the data. Additionally, you want to have the cell radio working when you check for app updates, since the Android Market won't recognize certain apps if the cell radio is powered off...
Sent from my Dell Streak 7 using Tapatalk
Makes sense, have you tried Google Maps to see if does get some data like the AT&T did?
Not sure what you are asking, but yes, I can use Google Maps / Navigation, as long as I have data (WiFi) and the GPS radio is on. I have not tried Navigation with the cell signal...yet. Not really sure I want to pay for another data service, even if it is pseudo-4G.

Well like I wrote, on the AT&T Samsung Tab even without activating the SIM, data worked more or less, HTTP on port 80 and for Google Maps. Not sure why but it was handy!
I dont have a data plan and I disconnected wifi. I picked up a cell signal. I was able to do google searches no problem.. when I tried to click a link though it brought me to the TMO page to sign up for prepaid service. So maybe even without data the google things like search and according to you maps.. work. I was kind of surprised when I was able to do a google search with no dataplan and wifi turned off. For a split second I thought I was getting free data! Until I tried clicking on one of the links.. ahhahaha
Sounds a bit like what I'd experienced on the Tab than , I think Google News did work though, albeit slowly. It was certainly convenient for GPS guidance.
Ok, so let's test this further. I'll run mine for a few hours with just the cell and background sync and see if gmail etc work *without* an active data plan...
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
Sounds good and I'll be able to join you as my Streak 7 has arrived!
So, I gave it a try and no go, unlike on the Tab where AT&T let some limited data go through with an unactivated SIM, T-Mobile block out all traffic, makes sense.

Confirmed, although having the cell radio on does affect what apps you see in the Market.

I got my Ds7, when I signed up it said 39.99 for 5 GB, when I logged into my account, it says unlimited DATA, gotta love it.
That's a good deal! I've found that the 2gb/$25 of m ipad subscription have always been enough though.
@WookieFan - It also seems that GPS doesn't work in plane mode, even if activated with the smartbar toggle, is there a way to just turn off just the cell phone to try to save on battery life ?

That's because it's probably like most TMO data plans. It's 5GB of fast 3G/4G broadband data until you go over 5GB then it's EDGE speeds after that. It's still unlimited but just slower. Selling it as a 5GB and showing up as unlimited probably irks fewer folks though. They have done the opposite in the past. It doesn't matter to me either way since the end result is the same IMO. I do like how TMO does it. Much better than being raped with overages or cut off.

Not that I have been able to find. But I dont root my devices until the warranty is up. I suspect if yiu have root, you can get an app or a widget that will shut down just the cell radio. I can confirm that no widgets found in the market will shut off my cell radio on a stock S7.

I turned on airplane mode and tunrend on wifi and gps, all seems to be working.
Keep an eye on GPS, it stopped working the other day when I was using the same setup...and also when I wasn't in airplane mode yesterday so there might be other issues at play.

I plan on buying a second hand G1 and rooting it and installing CyanogenMOD 4.0.1. I currently just have a HTC Juno (Shadow) with no data plan and I do not want to get one, is there a way I can disable data so I don't get charged? And do I have to change the APN to use MMS and or SMS with out a data plan? Thank you.
also, will T-mobile give me a unlock code if I didn't buy the G1 from them? (I am a subscriber for more than 90 days)
i have the same question.
thx 4 help.
Just disable the sync and your good to go. Also if u dont have data plan, they wont charge you because it will not work. Thats how Tmobile is anyways. FInally I dont think Tmobile will give you one, just go purchase off of the internet.

Ok, thanks. I didn't know if they would just start charging me per mb. And do you have to change the APN to get MMS with out data, cause I have unlimited messaging but I heard that MMS uses data on the G1?

Actually you have apps that go out and try to get updates and other info without you know, so just turning off sync won't work. There is an app on the market (can't remember the name) that stops all outgoing data.
Thx for the answers!
Could anyone tell us the name of this app?
If I remember right it's droid"something" or "something"droid, but of course without the "something"
And you will be charged if you don't have a data plan if you don't stop the data from going out.
here is the app!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=541380
its called " droid wall"
Yep that's it. I knew it was droid somthing.
First, T-mobile WILL give you an unlock code for a secondhand G1 if you're not delinquent and have been a customer for 90+ days. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. You have that "feature" every 90 days.
Second, T-mobile tracks G1s (and I'm sure MyTouch3Gs) by IMEI on their network, so they DO KNOW what phone you have. I think you can circumvent the need to buy a data plan, but more than likely you'll receive a "upgrade" message every time your phone tries to download some data. Could just be annoying, but if you're not using data, you might be able to get away with it.
That being said, why buy a smartphone if you're not going to use it as one? I can promise, you won't enjoy your phone to the fullest without data. Sorry.
Thank you everyone for your help.
I know it seems dumb to have a smart phone w/o data, but I don't really wanna pay t-mobile for it. And I can just use wi-fi most of the time.

Actually, I think that data is a waste of money. I survive and enjoy my android just fine without it. Most places that people visit and commute to everyday has access to WiFi(school, home, work, cafe, etc). There is no need to pay the double bill, unless the said places doesnt have wifi.
Hey all,
i recently hopped over to sprint and now use and EVO instead of my old G1.
After i transitioned, i lent my G1 to a friend on TMobile.
He turned the phone on, logged into his Google account and is now receiving an active 3G signal.
But here is the thing...
He has NO data plan active with TMobile!
More info:
Before i gave him the phone, i took the SIM card out.
I did a full wipe and bought it back to factory settings.
The phone is rooted and it is currently running the final 1.6 Cyanogen ROM (NOT the newer 2.1 build)
I checked my TMo account, which is still technically active since i plan on fully canceling and porting my number to the new EVO next week. I see that i have no activity on the phone for calls or data.
He checked his TMo account and verified with me that he currently has no active data plan.
So what's the deal with that? It seems like some kind of bug that could be working out VERY much in his favor. We are hesitant to call TMo and ask them about this, for fear of him losing his free 3G service.
Any idea how or why this happened? We're both jazzed about it, but are curious if there is something that we might be missing that could entail him winding up paying for it in the long run.
Thanks for your help, all.
geez, i have FREE sms/text messages on att!
i got no ATT sms/text plan!
wait, they charging me 20cents per texts! haha
yea, your friend has no data plan!
they going to charge him by the MB!
i think each mb is like 1$.
so you use 100mb, they going to charge him 100$ ! haha
really? even if he never registered any 3G data plan of any kind?
Once again, this isn't SMS data or the old school 'download' data.
This is straight up 3G Connectivity.
Also keep in mind that on his online account info, it is showing no information regarding 3G data usage.
I remember when i first got the phone, it wouldn't even let me register my google account on the G1 until i called and fully activated 3G service.

cool. thanks for the info.
we dug a little deeper and found that he HAS been monitored as using 0.15mb in the last 3 days. so it looks like TMo does have it on record.
It's very interesting that they have made it default to per-megabyte even if you don't choose to use it.
He'll just have to call and ask them to shut off data altogether.
I plugged my friends tmo sim into a g1 I had and the net worked.. Seems his old free wap web feature worked .. But supposedly tmo will notice and cut you off ..

You don't need a data plan to use data. He'll be getting charged for the data services he has used. The same applies to SMS - if you don't have a text message plan then you pay for incoming and outgoing SMS.
its pay per use data....ur getting charged for it
WOW you guys are lucky.
Here in Canada, the pay-per-use data rate is 5 cents /kB. That comes out to $51.20/MB
He will get caught using the data and either be charged for the data, or be charged with a data plan on his next bill.
I am in the same situation, where I don't use data, so I downloaded APNdroid from the Marketplace. This will deactivate all data (other than wifi). If he doesn't want to be charged, I strongly suggest he gets this program ASAP!
Apndroid doesn't work with 2.1 roms though, so another alternative is the apn widget by curvefish, it does the job too.

I'm running the latest Cyanogen on my G1 and APNdroid works fine.
I am not sure this is a big deal. I chose to go with what was called a flexpay account when I signed up for T-mobile two years ago because I was terrified of overages. When I lost my job, my phone bill was not on the top of my priority list. With flexpay, you can have your account suspended 45 days before it gets cancelled completely. The entire time it was suspended, I had 3G. Full internet use. Very awesome, because I use my Google voice number for about everything. I just was unable to make or receive voice calls or send and receive sms. They can't charge you for something you haven't signed up for.
I've tried various different ROMs but it seems since installing the latest releases of Froyo I can't seem to get any kind of consistent data speeds any more.
One minute I'm getting 2mb the next I'm getting 200 or no connection at all. I've tried going back to other roms even 2.1 (cyanogen) but still have the issue. I don't know if it's network related or something is messed up on my phone.
I'm going to go back to completely stock everything (including radio) and see if I still have problems but just wanted to post here to see if anyone else has seen issues.
Thanks
Before you resort to messing with your device you might want to call AT&T and ask them whats up with you area. I found that 16 out of 20 towers in my arean were down and that was the problem. I continued to question them about what they were doing about it and found that the answer was nothing. The towers are Verizon owned and they cant do anything about it. They gave me a $280.19 credit on my account which almost pays next months bill.
I saved myself from the trouble and got next months bill paid.
Now, thats killing 2 birds with 1 stone
Yeah I've been having absolutely terrible data all day. I got on here looking for a thread about this. I'm also on AT&T. It has pretty much stopped working completely for the last two hours.
I read there was a nationwide outtage and people thought it was T-Mo but they claimed it was HTC.
Not real sure what the issue is but it's getting annoying.

ya... I ended up calling them... they said not having my IMEI # on my account would cause strange things eventually when the system does it's scans or whatever... they added the # to my account and data seems fine now... well, fine within ATT standards lol
I have been having big issues with the data connection since froyo came out.
Data will get "stuck" on sending and no program (browser, sync, market, ...) will be able to send or receive data ... they all time out or give a network connection error.
The did do an IMEI scan. They shut off my data because I had an iPhone plan.
I just hulked out at the ATT store for half an hour.
I'm still using a GSM carrier because I want to switch phones whenever I please.
They put me on the smartphone data plan. What happens if I want to grab an iPhone 4 and switch back and fourth?
So Angry. Don't Tread on Me!
Well I feel like an asshole. SwitchPro Widget disabled my data connection.

If you look around, there's a broad array of AT&T data problems the last 2-3 days... So something is going on, and I highly doubt it has anything to do with any hardware, software, etc, except for specific examples of course.

Crock'o's###e (it's an Irish crock, so there's an "e" at the end). All they need is the SIM card #, or ICCID, to authenticate the user. The IMEI is irrelevant and if the network needs it, it's auto-pulled from the switch (GSM phones always broadcasts the IMEI when they connect, it's how they nab people for the data plans). What the rep is doing with the IMEI is just updating the billing system, not anything network related (again, since the network already has your info). Now...what happens is that whenever you change the SIM or IMEI in the billing system, it orders the network to push out an OTA SIM update. There is,however, an option to simply send the OTA without fudging with the numbers.
Oddly enough, I ran the "mark the spot" application and at the end, it asked me if I wanted to run a diagnostic test. I selected yes and then about 10 minutes later it sent me a free text message acknowledging that they received my issue.
Now i'm testing my speeds and everything seems back to normal!
I'm getting consistent 1.5 up and 1.5 down whereas I was getting < 100 each way a couple of hours ago.
I'm in MD btw.

Ya I've always been thinking the same thing but was rather desperate to get better results after a week of poor performance and, surprisingly, after updating the IMEI # I was getting full speeds again. It could be purely coincidental but I guess there's absolutely nothing wrong with having the correct IMEI on file.
ATT has been sucking lately. I don't know if it's the froyo radio or what but I have been experience a lot of lag when the phone has been off for a bit then trying to initiate a data connection. ATT's data network can be absolutely awesome or absolutely SUCK, depending on the time of day and network utilization. I think I'm ready to jump ship to sprint (apparently they've really cleaned up their network problems in central ohio) or verizon but the Nexus has me stuck to ATT until something significantly better comes a long to switch into.
Too bad all newer phones on other networks all have those craptastic sudo layers like sense and blur... that crap and the "personal touch" of the carrier to android releases always ends up in it being a small eternity before you actually get the latest android. This is why the Nexus stays in my hand... I sure hope someone else releases a vanilla android phone that's support as widely as the Nexus.

but yea i hope it has nothing to do with hardware. i was just fine with my nexus one using 3G up until a few days ago. i hope this is AT&T's way of fixing their 3G. this better get cleared up soon cuz im sooo ready to jump onto Verizon's Droid X or jump on T-Mobile's Galaxy S (while still being able to use my sim card on my nexus). i always had issues with AT&T and i just tried to ignore it while i was on the iPhone 3Gs/Nexus One but now this is ridiculous. i have had a few nights were i would get no data service at all. i was scared as sh*t thinking i messed something up while i was flashing (i happened to have flashed something the night i had no data) but when i woke up the next morning, i had data again. im almost fed up with AT&T. im paying $175 a month for two lines and this is the crap i get?

what does that do? does it help AT&T find the spotty service areas?
So I've done plenty of searching, enough so that I was able to unlock my phone without the data working, rooted my phone, flashed and modded it, successfully running newest Biffmod.
That being said, i'm 100000% sure I have a working data plan, my plan is unlimited everything.
Works fine in any of my other phones, Dash 3G, HTC HD2, Unlocked Samsung blackjack i607.. The difference, those are all windows mobile phones?
But the HTC HD2 Dual boots android 2.2 froyo and data works there.
Yup, same sim I'm talking about, same plan, just different phones.
Any Idea why my data plan is not working with the G1? Am I doing something wrong? It worked when i FIRST got this phone (ordered it off ebay not that long ago to play with).. After factory reset/wipe before modding is when it all went sour.
Was stuck on log in screen so I had to do the work around to get into the phone, obviously not with Biffmod I can skip.. But I cant use market place, check e-mail, ANYTHING data related. Yet my Icon says 4 bars, 3G and I even see the "up" and "down" data xfer arrows giving me activity.
It's as if it's "there" just not working.
Any help would be great appreciated, I plan to go to T-mobile and hopefully one of the people there will actually have some tech savvy.. Wishful thinking.
Long story short, I just want my data to work. Please, and thank you.
Do a search on here for the correct APN setings for your provider.
edit: here's the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475564
Read the thread, it's for ATT users trying to use a T-Mobile phone.
The issue is that I actually have T-mobile.
I'm fairly sure I saw the apn settings for t-mo in there too. That's probably what you should be checking first.
Sent from my G1 using XDA App
Just google Tmobile's US apn settings or grab them from another of your devices, then it will work.
Perfect, I'll give that a shot when I get home from work today, thanks for all the help so far.
Nexus 6 not multitasking?
I just purchased a Nexus 6 that I'm using on Verizon. The phone is completely stock(5.1.1). I've noticed that when I'm on a phone call, I'm unable to use Google maps or anything else that involves data. I was also listening to Sirius radio via the ap. When I tried reading a text, the Sirius player would stop playing. It's as if I'm unable to mulitask at all with the Nexus. Is this the case with this particular phone? I never had an issue with my Note 3? Thanks for any input...
Do you have advanced calling on your account? If so then it should work as it will use 3G data when your using VoLTE.
It's free, so if that's not already on the account add it and then it will work.

Because not every phone has this ability - so why would they offer it or implement it on devices that can't use it? Then they would expect it to work, but since the device can't, it doesnt work - then the customer is all pissed. I agree that it's kind of dumb that you have to add it to the account prior to it working on the phone - I feel like if the phone can do it, and it's free anyway, why wouldn't it just add it from the git-go? That's kinda stupid.
They don't do it any weird or unusual way. The devices that CAN use it, have the option to use it, those that dont...dont.

they could do it the way GSM carriers do - if you have a device that supports that capability, it works. If not, it doesn't work. User doesn't have to go change any settings, or call carrier to change something on account etc.

every phone does have the ability, just not on verizon. my first smartphone i bought in 2003, and have been using data on voice calls with tmobile since then. the problem is that verizon isnt a gsm carrier but a cdma carrier. sprint has the same issue with vouce and data(at least verizon offers Volte), but not as much as verizon. att and tmobile never had the issue. many phones dont have this issue on verizon anymore because now they add two different radios to verizon phones, to catch a voice signal, and a data signal. on tmobile and sprint, they have one radio, because you can have voice and data on a gsm provider.
I was just speaking on a per-verizon service situation - since that's what the OP has. I know it has worked for a long time on other carriers.
