This might be a silly question, but whats the best way to upgrade the CM7 nightly's? do I have to download the new ROM and re flash every time with CWR3.0.0.6?
TIA

from one version of darkys to another a wipe isn't necessary,
when changing from one ROM to another ROM a wipe would be necessary to remove any unwanted files, apps, scripts whatever, which may cause problems, for an unsupported ROM
Right - only if you switch to a very different ROM or maybe new major version you need to wipe!
thanks guys, its time to shift to 9.4 then
I would recommend a wipe. Even more so I would recommend waiting till this weekend for 9.4.1 as some people have had issues with 9.4.
Before flashing any rom you should read through that rom's thread. Darky's thread is unbelievably huge but just read the first page and skip to the end, read back a few pages and you should find most of the answers you need.
Good luck and enjoy one of the best roms for our galaxy s.
Ps. For 9.4 you might want to use a kernel other than dark voodoo. It is a little buggy atm. Maybe try hardcore or DamianGTO's.

ok...great , i would wait for the new stable one then....
hi,
whats up?
ok so i have darkys rom v9.4 and i want to try a new rom called pilotx because im not really happy with the battery life and speed, and i got a little bored
so anyway, im kindda new to this flashing thing and i dont want my phone to become unusable for the next days so i wanted to know how to change roms the quickies and painless way possible.
do i just copy the files to the sd card, wipe and then install with recovery?
thanx
yes that is what you do BUT !!!
also remove the lagfix (if applied) before flashing the new ROM
Ok thanx.
So when do I need to use Odin?
And is miui a good rom for the sgs? Do you recommend it?
i use MIUI now and its awesome !!!
it has a few bugs still but is more than stable for day to day use.
biggest issue is battery life - its about 1 full day with heavy use. 2 days with normal use.
you MUST follow the instructions perfectly, it can be a little tricky but will definately be worth it.
I realise this has probably been asked 1000's of times but I would prefer to have an answer tailored specifically for me and my phone as I don't want to try something have it not work and brick my phone.
Basically I want to change my boot animation and from what I've read I understand I need to flash a kernal that will allow this, I've always wanted to try flashing roms/kernals but honestly im too scared too.
I guess my question is what rom/kernal would you suggest I flash? (that allows bootanimation changes)
My phone info is as follows: (Edit- flashed from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5..proud of myself )
model- GT-I9000
firmware- 2.3.5
Baseband version- I9000XXJVS
Kernal- 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVS-CL565837 [email protected] #2
build- Gingerbread-XXJVS
I've probably given too much but as you can tell I'm a noob when it comes to my phone.
Any advice is apprecited
You can have a look at this tutorial: link
Alrighty I will take a look!

I'm still after more advice, That link didn't really help me understand how to flash a rom.
I would go for Cyanogenmod 7 I'm already on CM9 now en this is pretty good!! Even when it's stil in Alpha
I was contemplating Cyanogenmod or MIUI
Would you say Cyanogenmod over MIUI?
If so how would I go about getting that onto my phone?
sorry for spamming, But I just flashed MIUI so this thread is not really needed anymore!
Pretty happy I figured out how to flash a rom safety
Hello fellow earthlings!
My friend has a SGS, and it is still running the stock froyo 2.2.1. It is not rooted nor has any history of hacking. She asked me to update her phone to CM10. Can anybody tell me where to start and what to do? Any links? Or are CM10 roms stable already?
I would be grateful for anyone willing to help me.
Are you sure that's a good idea? Despite what everyone might tell you CM10 isn't exactly stable yet. If you update it for her she might have to rely on you to fix her problems all the time since she didn't learn how to update it herself.

Well, this might be a reason to do the upgrade
My experience:
I had a 2.3.6 stock GB. It was very good but sometimes I noticed problems (lagging, app force closes, etc.). Not much, but I got annoyed and secondly I wanted to know what is all the hype around the CM. So I flashed CM9. Very nice, smooth, same battery life, but missing some of the applications, TouchWiz and got some errors as well (see this). I do not have much time (and experience either) to flash every day and I want a stable system, so I will not go for CM10 for some time.
Was it a good idea after all? Yes and no. I had to reinstall everything (CM9 uses different file system, some apps do not remember its settings, etc.), had to look for a new launcher (a word I did not know existed ) had to sort out birth illnesses. On the other hand I received a new system, a new experience and I know that if I would perform a system change it will be an upgrade to CM10, not a downgrade. Possibly I might do even a sidegrade - switching to a different developer. But obviously I will stick with the most known brands (AOKP, MIUI).
Hope I helped you.

you should and must update it to the latest firmware for your phone , which is gingerbread 2.3.6
so you have two options....
1) use KIES and let it do the job for you
2) use Odin3 and flash the latest Gingerbread ROM for your region from here or here
you must have this for any upgrade...so do this first and and see, how it suits you or her
I've got my Verizon SCH-1800 that I wanted to start using again.
Looking at it now, I'm on CM 9-20120511-NIGHTLY-p1c, which is 4.0.4
The kernel is 2.6.35.7-g8f42093, [email protected]#1
I've been reading around about new ROMs, etc but if I'm not mistaken, back when I rooted this processes were very particular about how to root this tablet and all I'm seeing is a lot of older threads. I guess I'm hoping someone can answer two simple questions for me:
- Is there a method of rooting that is the definitive way for this tablet?
- After so much time, is there a version of Android that is most stable for this aging tablet? ICS, JB?
Thank you if anyone can help, I appreciate it.
If you have CM9, then you have root access. As to stable or good rom's, you just have to read up on the different ones to see what sounds good to you. Then flash it. Don't like it? Try another.

Ok, so from now on it's just a question of installing zips via recovery? I never have to go back to stock again like you once used to?
Something more must be needed because I can't even flash this CM ROM without problems: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032726
Recovery says it's a bad ZIP. But I got it from that link.
