[Q] moving from darky - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
whats up?
ok so i have darkys rom v9.4 and i want to try a new rom called pilotx because im not really happy with the battery life and speed, and i got a little bored
so anyway, im kindda new to this flashing thing and i dont want my phone to become unusable for the next days so i wanted to know how to change roms the quickies and painless way possible.
do i just copy the files to the sd card, wipe and then install with recovery?
thanx

yes that is what you do BUT !!!
also remove the lagfix (if applied) before flashing the new ROM

Ok thanx.
So when do I need to use Odin?
And is miui a good rom for the sgs? Do you recommend it?

i use MIUI now and its awesome !!!
it has a few bugs still but is more than stable for day to day use.
biggest issue is battery life - its about 1 full day with heavy use. 2 days with normal use.
you MUST follow the instructions perfectly, it can be a little tricky but will definately be worth it.

[Q] Hesitating to upgrade to 2.3.3... for a reason?

Hello there,
Here's my situation: I'm still on Froyo JPY stock (unrooted) and have been reading extensively in this forums for quite a long time now.
I have various issues with my current configuration, the most prominent being fast battery drain (my phone has never lasted more than approx. 18hours), slow gps fix, occasional crashes and sometimes slow responses. Apart from that I dig the idea of a different lock-screen, VoodooSound for better audio recording quality while shooting videos at concerts, nice themes etc. etc.
Now I've looked into Virnik0's step-by-step guide and this sounds all very understandable and should give me a rooted 2.3.3 stock with SuperCurio's VoodooKernel (thank you in advance for such a clear guide).
However I'm still hesitating to upgrade for various reasons, and I hope someone can clear up some of these for me and might give me their general opinion.
1. Going from Froyo to Gingerbread, I feel like a full wipe would be necessary (or nicer and cleaner), am I right? How would I go about that before the update? (If I wait until the Kies Update, will this wipe my phone automatically?)
2. With the update, will I get the SamsungApps again with 2.3.3 that came with my phone on Froyo?
3. What's up with the issues in the 2.3.3 version, can they be fixed without too much understanding of mounting and rootexplorer etc.? (You read so much about issues like Swype, GoogleMaps, Battery Drain etc. It's hard to decide whether the new version will meet my needs or make things worse)
Now as an alternative, do you guys think flashing a custom Kernel like Voodoo (Froyo Versions) togehter with a less battery draining modem would already solve some, or all of my issues?
I am just quite confused with all the options and new information everyday and I don't want to mess up anything. This being said, I can easily access both Recovery and Download Mode with the 3-button combos (kind of an intermediate newbie here, i guess )
Well all opinions and answers are very much appreciated.
Kind regards.
Point one gingerbread is BETA .
Point two using the unofficial methods may brick your phone and will certainly void warranty .
Point three using unofficial roms means kies no longer updates .
Point four the Samsung apps you get are in the main the same .
Point four the majority of reported bugs are either bad flash or idiot using the phone .
Your choice to proceed .
Personal route would be to follow Virnik0's step-by-step guide. But stop before Installing Darky rom .
Instead go to Rom Kitchen and build a rom .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
Stock with WIPE Kernel Chainfires .and all other apps available .
when thats done install CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS
Followed by if required XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock
jje
Thanks for your swift reply, it is much appreciated.
Just for my understanding: The procedure you recommend sounds a little "double" to me:
If I follow Virnik0's guide until step 20 (right before Darky ROM), my phone has already been flashed with stock firmware including bootloaders + CFRoot Kernel + VoodooKernel (supercurio).
After that you mean go to ROM Kitchen (the new Beta I suppose?) and stock again this time with WIPE and Chainfire's Kernel. After that again with CFRoot Kernel?
I am confused. What is the purpose of this. Besides that, can you point me to the XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock file?
Not if its already flashed you dont need them just pick what you want .
I probably stopped as soon as i had 2.3 installed and then went rom kitchen etc .
Just stop before the post that says install Darky rom and you should be fine .
XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock file?
You will have to search i have deleted all my SGS 1 links .

I think the point he was trying to make was that you can build a rom to suit your needs in the kitchen. If u want sammy apps you can include them, if u don't you don't have to.there are many custom roms out there too. alot off which strip out the crap from samsung. I personally use debusrom but this does not have samsung apps. it does however have the aosp lockscreens. Its all down to what you want. Which is why the kitchen may be a better option for you, right down to the modem you wish to use.

oh man ur always here to answer people's quesion u got thanks from me
now commenting on the original post, the only reason for me stay away from the gb roms is the call recording function which is unavailable yet in gb roms (apart from miui which is awesome but unstable according my experience )
MIUI is not unstable, it just has a few minor bugs, biggest one being battery drain. everything works as it should do, ive been using it since rc3 and i aint going back..... ever lol

[Q] Looking for a recommended rom

hi
a question for the experts:
im looking for a recommended rom, as fast as possible, including lagfix if needed. Especially when having lots fo apps.
It just that i got this annoying lags on my current Rom, and sometimes i got an annoying delay when hitting an app buttons, up to 3-4 sec.
There are so many roms so i'm a bit lost, and will appreciate if you could help me get the best rom that i'm looking for.
And one more thing if possible: I prefer a detailed HowTo installation guide as possible...
Thanks
if you want to stay close to the base rom... try a deodexed base rom with a kernel supporting lagfix like darkcore..
or try this link (a list of custom roms)
alchemistar.blogspot.com/2010/10/samsung-galaxy-s-custom-roms-list-1014.html
Personally i tried (and adopted) GingerReal :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025348
Already fast with just this rom. and after activating the voodoo lagfix with cwm it's really fast.
I have a very goo user experience with this rom. (looking forward to V7 (JVQ) that should go out tonight)
Go out to dev and explore, matter of taste/how you use your phone/your preferences......and each rom will have detailed install instructions....if not then pick the dev up on it. You will get as many answers as there are roms with this kind of question, and if your answer is......i haven't got time.....then stay with stock as you won't have time to sort any subsequent problems!
Insanity cm017/glitch v10c
MIUI Galnet V3...give it a try, you won't be disappointed...
i have 2 options for you
1- i tried many roms and i realized that Darky rom is awesome in performance and the team is really cooperating , wait for Darky v.10.2 i expect it come out soon , it will be perfect rom
2- different and fast rom Galnet " make you own iphone look on android galaxy " bring all what you wish , but stil have few defects but they make weekly developing , and v3 will come out tonight
Or CM7 - fastest ROM beside MIUI.

From my point of view, MIUI is really great in comparison to the original SGS mod. I'm using it and updating it every two weeks because of the updates it's providing us.
Well im usin F1 galaxy s2 rom it makes you feel like u are usin galaxy s2 and its fast without lagfix enabled.
My + its for Juwe's Smart Edition > v5.0 XXJVP .... Semaphore Kernel its in Rom and you can flash new v. with cwm ....
Rom its very stable , fast and very nice .... in my case - all works fine

I definitely recommend the Super Galaxy rom by socialsp!

[Q] Looking for a stable custom ROM. What should i choose?

I promised a friend of mine that I will help him get a more stable ROM for his OB because he doesn't know anything about flashing or anything root related really and the stability of the stock ROM is, well, pathetic. I haven't seen any android phone until now which gives random crashes and freezes with a stock ROM.
So, I really need your opinions on the stability of the various custom ROMs that have been developed for the p970. Doesn't matter if they're based on CM.
there is Marvel rom, Zeus rom and many stable ones
but i would advice you go zeus
it's more helpful to tell him why you advice zeus..
i went almost immediately to a custom rom with my OB so i can't realy compare with the stock rom.
Zeus is my favorite, for my daily use it's is very stable.. i haven't got any problems but the only things i use is wifi, 3g, some browsing, sms, calling.. just the usual stuff. i'm not a very active user.
The things i like the most about zeus is the fact he realy improves the phone's ability. without giving in on stability.
With zeus you get great performance increase and stabilty.
I tried CM one time and it gave me nothing but problems.. instability like i had never seen before.. sudden reboots within a few hours.
maybe it's better now but why change something that's realy good, so i will stick to Zeus.
I can't tell you much about other roms because i haven't tried them very long.
if like you said its for your friend who is not really experimental well i would actually advice to flash marvel since its basically stock, but slightly modded, or if you really want to try zeus but want it to be almost foolproof you can try with the v3, i personally used the v3n (had probs with v4 & v5 and went back to v3) for the longest of time w/o any or with the least issues, prada/ supressed rom is also good but bluetooth is an issue (i think) delphin ive not tried...miui i havent tired it for very long so cant say much... there was gabwerkz echelon but for now its been TD, sapphire have not tired it long enough to comment much, wont recommend cm for now as i believe it would require quite abit of tinkering around....
or if you dont mind using froyo.... then nova is prolly the best best for most stable
but then again this is just my opinion.....
Or cook one on your own, or just flash the software available for you, then root it, take titanium backup, uninstall all the crap you dont need, maybe add a cust kernel of sergey, make/take a custom theme, another launcher, add another lockscreen and you already have your own custom ROM.
Have fun

prada/ supressed rom is also good but bluetooth is an issue (i think)

SUPRESSED is a fully functional 100% working 135 MB ROM. no Bluetooth or any problems. very close to stock albeit without the bloatware.
and of the PRADA ROM port, i have fixed the BLUETOOTH to make it fully functional.
just need sometime to upload the ROM.
and SAPPHIRE ROM is also 100% problem free.
however, my PERSONAL fav is Zeus. it's a great one.
Hee sorry abt that bro.....

I would personally suggest you go with Zeus over Marvel, Both are great ROMs ofcourse ,however i had more available ram which could give us an edge when trying to play games..and the thing tat i liked abt Marvel is that it is totally custamizable
Thanks a lot for your feedback guys!
hiHIhi
There's a lot of ROM for you to choose... i guess all of the replied above made you some choice, for me i recommend you the Zeus if u want OC, gaming and better performance, I personally choose Marvel is because a lot of customization to be made, include various boot animation, launchers and widget to decide which to install =)
For stability choose zeus
Wanna do a lot of mod choose psycho36's selfkang8 + huexxx 4.1 kernel
I did use CM7.2 date 4.21 for a day and it seem it work better at night, when I don't use it for call but whenever a call is coming through it will just restart itself.
Well I ve been trying every rom, and i have decided that marvel and zeus are the best ones, i d recomend you to try both

[Q] Installing clean HTC version

Hello guys!
So I bought my One two days ago and I'm pretty satafied with it , but the Rom that came along the device is the vodafone one , which means I have some unnecessary pre-installed apps..
So my question is how can I install a clean stock Rom ?
In addition , I experienced some things I didn't really like such as pretty bad battery life (losing about 1% after using whatsapp for a minute or even less - pretty much the same battery life I had while using my previous 3 year old sgs1) , and a little stutter while using apps like fb,youtube, play music or the camera .. Do you think that changing the Rom can fix those problems ?
Thanks in advance !

Yes, a custom rom and/or kernel can fix those issues. You need to unlock (I think via HTC Dev is the only way at the moment), flash a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP, I use TWRP and recommend it), root, and flash a custom rom (some Roms come per-rooted so you may be able to skip rooting yourself). There are toolkits available in the Development forum, as well as guides to help you out. Read, read, read, and choose the method you're comfortable with. Roms close to stock, but that allow removing the bloat are Maximus and ARHD (both close to stock). I use ViperOne, a Sense rom with an insane amount of customization! Custom kernels can give you some added features that can help battery life and reduce lag. I use ElementalX and really like it. It's all here in the forums, just read, make backups, and read some more. Hoped this helps...

There is nothing stable for our device. Even the original Gingerbread keeps rebooting with games or ram consumption apps... samsung take out this phone from their as*es. You can try CM10.1 but it has some problems because of low RAM and battery goes down faster...
