Ok, so this has happened a few times now on various ROMs
I'll put my cappy on the charger for the night turned on with my alarm set. When I wake up (somehow on time luckily lol) it's turned off... I don't get it. What gives?

Maybe. To do that, all I have to do it flash back to stock right? Then return?

Yes please. Format the internal SD (optional, but I would prefer this), flash it to stock so all traces of messing with it are cleaned up.

I also security unlocked it. Do I need to take care of that or do they even check that?
Also, I have a zagg screen cover on it which I adore and I've only had this phone for a couple months now at the most, I would hate to get rid of it
Will they replace that?

By "security unlock" if u mean network unlock, once u flash back to stock it should get reset again.
I unlocked mine on stock, n then when I loaded stock back when changing roms, i found it got locked again. So shouldn't be an issue.
And well, nothing can be done abt the screen protector.
Believe, I've the 4th captivate after 3 replacements for sleep death issue.

Well, at that rate, a screen protector isn't even really important lol. We'll see if the problem persists :/

Thanks Smith. When u get ur replacement I would recommend u wait for 3-4 days, confirm it does not have sleep death or charge death issues, and then apply screen protector.
Like the dood said - Flash back to stock.. but I would test to see if it keeps happening. If you have a Build 1008 phone - it seems to be more prevalent on that build then others.
Mine happens when the phone is fully charged especially. I would test that to see if you can get it to repeat or AT&T will just give you a replacement battery instead of a refurbed phone.
Will do, if I even get one this time around. We will see...
Thanks again!

I have a 1008 build phone and I'm hoping to exchange mine within the week. I flashed back to stock with Odin 1Click on Tuesday and I noticed it isn't entirely the same as when I bought the phone. There are some default apps missing, QuickOffice for one. Anyone have ideas?

Hmm. How would I get it to repeat lol, charge it all the way and wait? And do you think they would really sit there and wait for the battery to charge to 100 to test or just swap?

You can download Quick Office from ATT Market. It's not needed for returning it back to AT&T. All of the base bloatware is returned to the phone after you Odin it.

Don't think too much. Format the internal SD, and revert to stock and return in. One click odin to stock gets it close to how AT&T gave u the phone. A couple optional apps missing shouldn't matter.

Great, thanks. That is all I needed to hear. Hopefully returning it today. Then as long as I can use the three-button mode to get into download and recovery, I think I'm going to try flashing my first ROM bundle.
So I exchanged my phone tonight. They gave me a 1007 build, however my IMEI ends in 0652. The guy at AT&T told me that Samsung had replaced the bad component causing the shutdown problem and was re-issuing old phones. They apparently don't change the IMEI. I'll see what happens. If it starts shutting down again, I'm back in the store for a new one.

Yes. AT&T person is right. After multiple exchanges, my 4th n current phone is a 10.07 build, been using for over 2 months now n its been good.
So I was on atomic fusion and tried to flash another gb rom. Somewhere during the odin process it seemed to be stuck and I stopped it and tried again to get a red screen of death. I tried everything to get to d/l mode but nothing. So I called att and I have about a week left in my warranty so I went that route. Am I gonna be charged 400 dollars when they find out I was rooted with roms not theirs? I'm really nervous, I should have never flashed to gb, its to freeking complicated for me to understand all the bootloading and kernal stuff. Any thoughts or experiences to help ease the pain? Thanks
Prolly shouldn't have flashed if you weren't confident. In yourself.

If your phone shows any signs of life they will most likely be able to tell that you are not stock.
Your fine, I did the same thing as you are doing. I just acted like a clueless idiot and they never suspected a thing, but it was with Rogers not AT&T.

For all the topics asking this question I'm yet to see anyone come back saying that they have been refused, or charged extra after a new one is already sent out. In all likely hood they don't even check because they don't really care. If it is a hardware issues they are gonna have to swap pieces or even the main/motherboard which will come with stock pre-loaded at factory. If it is software they will just use what ever method they designed into the phone to force rewrite over what was in there before.
Now if you were taking it to a service center, where they are going to take a look in hopes of getting that very phone back into a working condition then maybe... just maybe. But if the phone does not boot then they are just gonna add it to the rewrite pile and give you a referb (or new if you ask nicely enough). This is why they always say "you might lose all your data so make a backup before hand."
Thanks, that makes me feel better, now all I have to do is survive a couple days without it. I won't be making that mistake again. What did I do wrong? I had no problem going from phoenix ultimate to atomic fusion. I was gonna try to go to cog5, I thought I was doing it right. All I did was use the odin that it said to use and it seemed to be stuck. What do you do when it freezes up during the odin process? Are you screwed no matter what you do? Should I have used the odin that takes you to stock 2.1 first? I'm really trying to understand all this but there's just so many ways about everything.
My samsung captivate had never given me any problems(in the very short but good few months I've had it) until I tried to downgrade from Gingerbread(2.3.5) to Froyo about 4 days back.
While using Odin 1 click (and the phone was rooted) to accomplish what I just said, the process seemingly carried out perfectly, the "passed" message appeared in Odin and it looked like it was a success, but instead of rebooting as usual after flashing, my Cappy just went completely blank, and has stayed like that ever since. :crying:
I have tried every button combo there is, and since Jigs are for soft bricks, I guess there's no use.
The only remedy that I haven't gone for yet, is Jtag.
Can someone, anyone, PLEASE help me here!?
Hoping someone gets it working here..
Yep. If zero signs of life...even when wall charging, then sounds like hard brick.
Which Odin did u use to downgrade ??
Just curious...

Well I've used Odin 3 v 1.8.5 and even Odin3 v1.7 many, many times and it's all run perfectly, but this one was Odin 3 One Click v 1.00
I've never bricked a phone ever, and yeah this one's a badass hard brick for sure.
ANY help would be really appreciated, all!

As you can see, it's from here. That's the Odin I used, but I don't think there was anything wrong with the file(at least I hope not)
It completed the process, gave the "passed" message, and then the phone went blank, like immediately.
Any thoughts on how that may have happened? 'Cause I thought it may have been bricked due to Odin crashing, but it did go through till the end, seemingly successful.

^ ^ This jig, is it for a hard bricked captivate or a soft bricked one? 'Coz although I'm definitely not confident with tearing up a micro USB cable, I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow. Heading to Radioshack first thing in the morning. Last shot God dammit :/

Jig won't do anything for a "Hard" Brick...only J-tag and/or Unbrickable Mod.

Something had to go wrong when the jf6 bootloaders were flashed, obviously. If u did not close that Odin yet (unlikely, i know) u could scroll through the log and see what it says about the boot.bin and sbl.bin.

Well Odin was closed, as expected. So that's not an option obviously.
Is Jtag doable by users, like could I get instructions on how to go about it? Or would I have to send it in?
And any other ideas?
Regardless, i recommend mobiletechvideos.com for the fix.

Dude if nothing works and you have had the phone for less than 1 year call at&t tell him you had your phone plugged into your computer over night charging, you woke up and the phone won't turn on now. And yiur house lost power and regained and there must have been a power surge around your area. You don't know what happened but it won't respond to anything....also do you know if your tripped the flash counter at all? Or did you reset it? P.m. me if any help needed I just went through this with my note....if all else fails p.m. me I have another fix but it isn't free but its cheaper than buying a new phone outright...

Well I thought of that too, but then there's a problem. I actually bought this phone from a friend, a couple months ago, since I wasn't sure how good of a model this was and I didn't want to go get myself a new Cappy just to be let down and want another one, you know?
Still, spent 160$ on it.
Anyway, he doesn't have the receipt, there's no way I can get att to replace it like you suggested.
And just a side note, the phone was in mint condition, never even been rooted before it got to me, lol!
Btw nope, no flash counter.
Huh? Att will not ask for a receipt when doing a warranty exchange...I've never had an issue with people not having receipts for a manufacturer defect....you will be fine as long as the phone was purchase less than a year ago

I thought they'd need it as proof, but thanks!
I'll head over to ATT in a couple hours and see what they say.
I'll let you know.
FYI - the return may have a hiccup in it. Since you bought it from a friend and not from AT&T (or an authorized reseller), they don't have any proof of how long you've had it. There's no way for them to know whether you got it yesterday or 2 years ago, so they may put up a fight about honoring the warranty.
This is just speculation, but I just wanted to throw it out there that it may not go as smoothly as we would all like it to go for you.

Thanks for the heads up though!
Any suggestions on how I should go about it then? Should I even tell ATT that I got it from a friend? Instead I could say I got it from ATT but lost the receipt...maybe a loophole somewhere.
If the phone had been activated for less than a year and its not a refurbished unit, they should replace it.
I apologize if there is already a thread on this, but I have not found an actual solution to it yet.
My Captivate's screen is on sleep mode, and maybe 20 ish minutes later, when I press the unlock button, I find that the phone is off and I have to turn it on again. This happens every 20 minutes, and the only way for me to keep it on is to frequently unlock the phone to verify that it is still on.
This is not a very practical method of doing things though, because the phone turns off in while I'm sleeping and I'm not always able to check my phone every 20 minutes.
My firmware version is 2.3.3 and I'm running Gingerbread OS. It's a refurbished phone I received from Rogers a week ago, and I really don't want to factory reset or anything like that as I have very important information/app data on my phone I don't want to have wiped.
I've heard of flashing a custom rom to fix the problem but the thread i read was from 2011. Can anyone help me with this issue? Thanks.
If you received it as a refurbished from Rogers then I would go back to them and get them to send you a new one. There was a batch of Captivates that had this issue and a new motherboard was the only true fix.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
Is that really the only way to fix the problem? Aren't there any custom roms that might fix the problem?
They might help the issue but they will not fix it. It is a hardware defect. I had to send one back to At&t for the same issue.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
Dude send the phone back to Rogers. Call them or go to the Rogers Plus store and explain them the problem. Tell them that you did factory reset and you're still getting the problem.

So, I've been using this wonderful device for a while now, since early October. I've finally got it set up the way I like it and all. Now, I'm just flashing ROMs to see which I prefer. Just a few hours ago, I decided to revert to the T-Mobile ANK3 (or AN-whatever) stock ROM because on Lollipop 5.0.1+ the battery dies much quicker than I'd like it to. Yet, that ROM would constantly either:
A) Die whenever it wanted to
B) Freeze and just not respond
C) Require a battery pull
D) Send me to D/L mode with "mmc_read fail".
So I decided to revert back to stock 5.0.1 because I was tired of all the bugs I was encountering with 4.4.4.
Now, every hour or so, the phone dies and gets stuck on the splash screen (with the obvious SEAndroid not enforcing + Set Warranty Bit). Or if it isn't that, the phone just outright freezes when I'm using a light application (i.e. Kik Messenger).
I'm starting to think that my eMMC is dying, because the phone was not acting like this when I first got it in early October. Every once in a while D/L mode keeps repeating my fears. I cannot send it in to Samsung because I already voided my warranty, and I am a prepaid subscriber on T-Mobile. (So, no, T-Mobile will not help me, likely.)
Any ideas on what's happening, or what I should do?
First thing I would do Is flash a different kernel

Did that, ended up having the same problems. I said screw it, and am now using CM12.1...
Although I really don't like it (because TW is now a good thing as opposed as to how bad it was on the S3), I'll settle with it. It's not so bad.

I bought the phone second hand, and it is out of warranty. I can't fork over money right now, as seeing how replacing the eMMC chip is probably expensive. I'll probably find some hackjob way of finding a replacement, or just live with it. I also don't think reflashing the bootloader will help.
Each time I power on the phone, it seems that it keeps getting worse each time. I get the "ddi: mmc_read fail" message more often, and off a cold boot, the phone will not actually boot and I have to battery pull like 2 times before it actually boots. Gee, looks like I'm screwed.
Good news...since they know that the eMMC chip is bugging out, they'll do a free repair. Success! Now, time to go into the repair shop and hope they accept my reference ticket, since I'll be a walk in.
I can't call right now, seeing as my phone has difficulty doing ANYTHING now...
