Ok, so this has happened a few times now on various ROMs
I'll put my cappy on the charger for the night turned on with my alarm set. When I wake up (somehow on time luckily lol) it's turned off... I don't get it. What gives?

Yes please. Format the internal SD (optional, but I would prefer this), flash it to stock so all traces of messing with it are cleaned up.

I also security unlocked it. Do I need to take care of that or do they even check that?
Also, I have a zagg screen cover on it which I adore and I've only had this phone for a couple months now at the most, I would hate to get rid of it
Will they replace that?

By "security unlock" if u mean network unlock, once u flash back to stock it should get reset again.
I unlocked mine on stock, n then when I loaded stock back when changing roms, i found it got locked again. So shouldn't be an issue.
And well, nothing can be done abt the screen protector.
Believe, I've the 4th captivate after 3 replacements for sleep death issue.

Thanks Smith. When u get ur replacement I would recommend u wait for 3-4 days, confirm it does not have sleep death or charge death issues, and then apply screen protector.
Like the dood said - Flash back to stock.. but I would test to see if it keeps happening. If you have a Build 1008 phone - it seems to be more prevalent on that build then others.
Mine happens when the phone is fully charged especially. I would test that to see if you can get it to repeat or AT&T will just give you a replacement battery instead of a refurbed phone.
Will do, if I even get one this time around. We will see...
Thanks again!

I have a 1008 build phone and I'm hoping to exchange mine within the week. I flashed back to stock with Odin 1Click on Tuesday and I noticed it isn't entirely the same as when I bought the phone. There are some default apps missing, QuickOffice for one. Anyone have ideas?

You can download Quick Office from ATT Market. It's not needed for returning it back to AT&T. All of the base bloatware is returned to the phone after you Odin it.

Don't think too much. Format the internal SD, and revert to stock and return in. One click odin to stock gets it close to how AT&T gave u the phone. A couple optional apps missing shouldn't matter.

Great, thanks. That is all I needed to hear. Hopefully returning it today. Then as long as I can use the three-button mode to get into download and recovery, I think I'm going to try flashing my first ROM bundle.
So I exchanged my phone tonight. They gave me a 1007 build, however my IMEI ends in 0652. The guy at AT&T told me that Samsung had replaced the bad component causing the shutdown problem and was re-issuing old phones. They apparently don't change the IMEI. I'll see what happens. If it starts shutting down again, I'm back in the store for a new one.

Bad Kernel? Bad Radio? What?
I've used quite a few different ROMs. (Enom, Kang [CM], MIUI, and most recently, Rodriguezstyle's miui.)
But, the problem keeps happening, despite wiping between each ROM.
is it the radio? or the kernel? I think it might be, but I'm fairly certain I have the right kernel...and I upgraded my radio when I went to Froyo...
Gah.
I dunno about the kernel, but from what I've heard, if you have the wrong radio your n1 will be bricked. So I guess it's not the radio.
It's not a problem, I've been living with it. It's just rather annoying...
Maybe it's an app I have installed? Or things aren't...done right? Augh idk.
Change the Kernel and that will fix it, pershoot's worked the best for me.
Do you have to pull the battery when it reboots?

Not that I'm aware of. I don't even have setcpu installed anymore.
So unless the roms themselves overclock, then no. I upgraded my
kernel, but it has done a random shut off once since then. But it's
not that often. Not as often as it was at least.
Do you have more than one battery to try? My phone locked up or randomly rebooted several times a day when I was using Cyanogen 6rc1, but it only did it with one battery and ran fine with the other. The problem went away after I updated CM though.
My theory is that my "bad" battery is damaged slightly enough that it conflicted with something particular in that rom (also happened with 3-4 different kernels). I don't know anything about batteries, but if that's accurate, I don't see why a battery couldn't be damaged enough to conflict with all roms.
It doesn't sound like your problem exactly, but might be one of the simpler things to try, especially if you have a spare or could borrow one or something.
Try to extract the SD-card and Power ON the phone without it. If the phone works
well in that condition, problem solved.
Something like this happens to me one time, all I do was to format the entire SD-card
in my iMac with the Disk Utility, filling all the space with zeros (0) for be sure all the
data was erased correctly. Then I make the partitions again, flash a ROM and all
is fine now.
Good luck!
I had the same problem. Phone would reboot during many tasks. This would happen with any ROM even stock. I sent the phone to htc and they changed the motherboard under warranty. I noticed it first started to happen with robo defense and then other apps such as YouTube or browsing the net. I wasn't able to use the phone while it was charging or it would reboot.

This is my suggestion as well. A friend of mine had this problem. There was a corrupt video on his sd card that caused the entire issue.
I have a phone that is in the range of phones effected by the standby of death thing and i didn't want to return it but it started affecting my phone, or at least i think it is. I almost always have a custom rom on it so could that be it. And also if i need to return my phone what should i do, should i just return it to jh7 and then call them to make a return or what? My IMEI ends in 3918.

First of all, never expose ur IMEI like this.

standby death means - phone turning itself off when in standby mode, irrespective of battery level.
mine used to turn off whenever it wanted be it the battery was in 90s, or in 80s, or anything for that matter. Never could I predict when I would find it turned off.

Yes, they can exchange your phone, I had a nokia mural replaced so many times I called the presidents office of AT&T, long story short I got a captivate for $99 dollars from that and a 3 month extension to my contract.

Agreed.
Though I suggest you hold out for another week or two and have them replace it for the Inspire. I'm going to do that soon, and speak to their 'Android specialists' about it.
Two things I don't like about that phone are the size (it's huge) and the lcd screen. I don't think I could go to an lcd after using samoled.
Plus, how would that work. I have a 2 year commitment with this phone, how could I trade for that one. I'm well past my trial period.
did you buy phone insurance? u coulda always just drop the phone and bust the screen.
if not, flash back to stock and the n00bs in the store wont know the difference. however, if you are well past your trial period, att is gonna send you to samsung more than likely. at least that is what they tried to do with me. my first captivate shut down every time i got a text message.
If you're insisting on switching phones, contact warranty and they'll send you another one. After they've sent you two Captivates, you are within your rights to ask for a different make and model. If they don't comply just ask for the Resolutions team, and they'll help you out.
thank you all

It's not rooted and doesn't have anything on it. Pretty much stock. Sent a text msg this morning and checked my email from it. Came back to it abt 20 minutes later and it won't even turn on. Tried charging it. Won't turn on. Tried swapping with my regular battery (which was fully charged when I put it away. It could be dead by now.). Nothing. Tried removing the battery, waiting, replacing the battery. Nothing. I did briefly get the M Dual Core icon and then all went blank.

Thanks, all.. Hauled my cookies 30 minutes over to Verizon. The sales rep assumed I hadn't bothered to charge my phone. When he realized it wasn't the battery, he was extremely helpful and replaced the phone on the spot. He said he'd never seen that before and with a phone less than 1 month old, I shouldn't have those kinds of issues. Kudos to Verizon for a pleasant experience. I've had some bad experiences in the past, but this gentleman was helpful and didn't try to sell me any accessories! ;p (They always try to sell me something when I'm there.)

This is referencing what one would do if the software had an issue, if it does this will fix it but kinda sounds like hardware. I have returned my Bionic to stock twice its fairly easy, computer does almost everything. Here is this to get you going if you wanna do it.

One would need the ability to turn the phone on in the first place for this to be attempted. That's why no one was mentioning the FXZ.
The phone booted to the dual core M logo, which with myself that happens to be as far as mine would go when i successfully flashed my FXZ. The phone needs to boot to the fastboot screen which can be done on many occasions that the phone can get to the first logo, as long as there is battery left.
....
But congrats on the new replacement i just saw that after i posted

It hasn't happened to me but I have to pull the battery on my wifes Bionic at least once a week and twice in one day. It would just go away suddenly and act like it was dead. I may return it for a replacement.
if anyone has exchanged their Bionic for a replacement because of the BSOD defect, will you please provide feedback in this thread? thanks
hi all:
just bought a bionic off ebay for cheap ($20 + free ship) but it has problems
it was being sold as "battery with water damage but phone is not but wont power on"
he said one night he left it in his drawer and when he woke up it didn't work anymore he tried removing battery and all that.
to my understanding the battery was previously water damaged and he could still use it and then got the wont power on later on.
anyhow to my question
the phone comes today with just the phone, water damaged battery and wall charger.
should I cut the end off the charger and do the wires to the battery and insert battery into phone and plug usb cord from laptop to the phone?
isn't this the correct way for bsod and a non water damaged battery?
is there anyway to test the waterdamaged battery to see if it could still be good?
I have a multimeter
I never noticed this but couple days ago, my wife's note 3 started to lock up constantly throughout the day. I told her these things happen sometimes and to just take the battery out, and put it back in and let it restart. When she did this, I realized under the SAMSUNG on bootup, there was an unlocked padlock with the wording CUSTOM under it. I was shocked and confused how this can be...
I asked her about it, and she said it's been like that since we got the phones. She remembers at the AT&T store that the seal was broken off by the salesman, so there is no way it was a returned phone.
What gives? ATT is going to give her a refurb phone, but she's very mad because we've had the phone for 2 months and had no idea she had an unlocked phone, and she shouldn't be penalized for getting a 'used' phone.
They told her that it was the nova launcher that is causing the issues, becuase it's an unofficial app. these people....
I told her maybe she got lucky and got a dev phone (too bad dev phone keeps locking up lol)
any ideas on this?
try running the "root checker" app on it. Mine showed it after I first flashed it.

It still had all the seals on it!!!

She said after she took battery out etc, THAT phone ended up with the custom logo at bottom too. I have no idea what she's doing to these phones!!!!
I thought the custom only happened when you rooted it and placed safestrap or a recovery on them.

i would use the return to MJ5 stock thread and flash the odin MJ5, then the MI9 fix and then the proper Mj5 files again and see if that clears up the issue. something seems to be lingering in the system that gives it the "custom" status.

here is the link to the Back to MJ5 stock thread, in all honesty once you get the files downloaded it only takes about 20 min to have the phone booting back up to stock MJ5 "WithOut ROOT" i just did this about 2 weeks ago. it DID get rid of the "custom" status and recovered my brick at the same time.
def worth trying!!!
You can root with kingo and use triangle away to remove the custom status.
As far as the other issues, a factory reset might help but a restore will be more likely to get rid of everything causing problems

My first note 3 did that too, a few days before it went into bootloops. Something was wrong with it. Att swapped it as it was within the first 2 weeks.
Swap it out is my suggestion, If you still can. It may start going wrong one day.

WHat I might do is, go to the ATT store with BOTH phones, and show them how this one keeps locking up (well I can't show that probably as it's random) but I can show the custom thing.
then I can show the refurbished phone that I just received and how the screen fails to turn on.
hopefully the corp store can get the idea, and give me a new phone or something

OH CRAP NO!!!!
if they SEE the custom status, they will not even deal with you unless you get a really cool rep. They instantly think that you tried to ROOT the phone and that is why you have ANY ISSUE you are talking about. i would not bring that phone into the store looking like that bruh.
the custom status is a symbol for root/modded phones. just do the stock restore, and IF at that point you want to take it back go for it. at least you will not have the custom lock screen going against you.

The point is not how to get rid of the custom logo, the point is why OP's wife brand new Note 3 sealed in the box has the logo, ATT should exchange it with a new phone not an refurbished.

i feel that, but what you are saying is that you want ATT ( big brother so to speak ) to admit that sent him a modded phone? WONT HAPPEN!!!
they will accuse her/him of tinkering and that is what caused the custom logo. even IF it came that way. i dont see them eating that blame as im sure they have quality control and procedures in place that should catch that kind of slip. and if it did slip through....you expect them to say yep your right we screwed up.
things happen, but i dont see them being ok with that....lol
I did be real mad if I bought the phone contract or not only found out it's been tempered.

i would too, but being mad will not change there view of a custom phone. best you can do is either fix it yourself ( stock odin packages ).
Orrr go into the store and HOPE you get a rep that doesnt know what the CUSTOM logo means.
