Help Phone wont boot after trying to install Voodoo - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to install Voodoo on my phone, it got through the first couple of steps (phone talking to me) then it went back to the android system recovery screen. If i try to reboot it goes to the att splash screen a couple times then goes back to the recovery screen. try to reinstall package and it runs some yellow text in regards to voodoo and then does the same thing.
I had the new stock froyo 2.2 and clockwork mod for recovery but i had the replace the install.zip with the voodoo.
I have no idea what to do at this point

You will need the kernel that was made for the 2.2 update. Any vodoo will not work. Please search before opening a new thread.

Help with my phone need to resolve brick

OKAY soo...
I was trying to flash cyanogens new rom 4.2.1.1 or w/e... and i flashed the radio. didn't do home + back, then i flashed his rom.
It was stuck at g1 screen for a long while so i went to recovery then flashed the radio again.. but instead of back home i did menu+call+end [which restarst phone]
now, when I try togoto recovery it shows exclamation point with triangle
though, my phone will boot up to my recent dwang rom, but its stuck at android bootloop.
help appreciated!
You flashed the wrong recovery image. Meaning you need to re-root your phone. Thats the STOCK recovery image, not the update.zip style recovery from the website. Easy fix.
I wiped and yeah i had 4 columsn of icons =/. thanks

[Q] Replaced Amon-Ra with Clockwork recovery, now can't upgrade to CM6 stable :(

Hi
I had upgraded to CM6 RC1 a while back, did the whole dangerspl stuff, and radio updates with no problem, from then on, I kept upgrading manually till I got to the stable release and thought I'd try to do it with the mod manager that's included in cm6.
It required me to install clockwork recovery manager and so I did, replacing the amon-ra recovery I had installed before.
I downloaded the rom with the google apps and tried to upgrade.
It is not stuck in the screen showing "T mobile G1" with no indication of progress or anything, it didn't load the recovery image.
I can still boot into the phone by removing the battery and placing it back, but I can't go into recovery.
What can I do now?

If you flashed recovery from within CM6 it's known to failure. You should use fastboot to flash your recovery when using CM5/CM6. There are several threats dealing with this topic.

Can you please point me (and anyone else who will read this thread in the future) to any of them?
I just fixed this by reinstalling the amon-ra recovery image

Clockwork Recovery Mod not showing up

Hi all,
I have 2.2 running on a Rogers Samsung Captivate. Rooted with SuperOneClick and installed ROM manager. Been trying to get Cognition going, following every set of instructions to the letter multiple times, but the problem is that whenever I reboot in recovery mode I never see the CWM screen. I get a screen with blue and yellow characters, then I select 'reinstall' packages and it always aborts. How do I get to the CWM screen so I can actually apply update.zip and get to Cognition 3?
Thanks so much, any help is appreciated! I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong!
you should flash CWM recovery on the app, then reboot and then reinstall packages twice.
in the rom manager, make sure you click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" first.
another way is to copy the update.zip to your sdcard root dir, then go to the recovery and reinstall packages twice.

[Q] HELP!!! i9010 stuck in recovery loop

OK here is what has caused issue...
Running stock.
Rooted using SuperOneClick.
Installed ROM Manager.
Flashed CWM for Captivate - successful.
Backup ROM - boots into what looks like stock recovery (3e).
I click reboot... Android with Yellow Triangle. Requires pull. No way around this. Tried factory reset.
Used ODIN to flash firmware... successful.
On reboot... back into recovery... click reboot and Android with Yellow Triangle.
Any ideas please!!!!???
PS... before going into recovery everytime it does a Movi-check thing and says stuff about media update, application update etc then ends up in Android System Recovery (3e)
Here is where you went wrong. You used CWM for the CAPTIVATE. And your phone is not a captivate SGH-I897
Are you in download mode? If so remove the usb cable when you boot into recovery.
Edit: isn't the i9010 just the Armani captivate?

I was in download mode when I used ODIN but then it reset at the end and the Galaxy S i9010 splash screen came up...
Then into the recovery...
I just need a way to get out of this damn recovery!
And... the i9010 I believe is the Armani Captivate. This is UK one.
some people had trouble with the i9010 rom on the captivate, im not gonna pretend to know why but maybe you can pm the guys from team komin or design gears who have worked with that rom in making it compatable with the i897, they might know something about the differences and inner workings. you are the first person i know of to try anything on the armani model.
install the update.zip package twice in a row.
stop giving newb answers, 3e recovery wont run an update.zip. he needs to flash a kernel with cmw or 2e patched in or a modified 3e recovery before he can think about cwm recovery,
but now his problems run deeper than that.

I've not downloaded any update.zip
Is it already on the phone?? I have not used the stock recovery manager for many moons!!
Anyway, I have managed to exit the loop. When the triangle came up I just kept tapping the menu button and then it reset.
Interestingly though... despite a "successful" flash via ODIN, I have all the apps preinstalled prior to flashing.
Is that right?
yes that is normal, the apps are on a different partition,
the update.zip is installed to your internal sd card when you go into rom manager and select "flash clockwork mod recover" but you still need to run the update.zip twice before you get into cwm
problem is that 3e recovery wont allow it so you need to flash a kernel with a different recovery first, then you can get into cwm, then you might be able to flash back to a proper kernel and access cwm from rom manager
Thanks Dani.
So just to be clear about where I am and where I go from here...
Back into clean JL1 firmware. Had to reroot. ROM Manager says CWM Recovery is installed but I end up straight at 3e.
Is there a way of removing the CWM it thinks is there or a quick way to get into CWM?
Thanks. A lot harder than my Nexus S was...

I thought he was on 2e. my mistake. There is a thread here in this forum including a modified 3e recovery that does not require digitally signed packages. Check it out.

to be honest you are taking a risk because there are differences between this and a captivate.
normal proceedure is to root-install rom manager- reboot into recovery-"reinstall packages" -phone reboots into recovery again-"reinstall packages" then you are in clockwork mod
but with "3e" you have to root-install rom manager - flash alternate captivate kernel with clockwork mod patched in via oden/neldars kernel app.
the problem is that nobody knows for sure if you can run an i897 kernel or modified i9000 kernel on that phone permanantly. you are the Guinea pig, it might not boot, it might have random problems.
and if it doesn't work try flash to stock-root-install rom manager- flash captivate kernel with 2e/modified 3e recovery (look several pages back in the development section) - reinstall packages- phone reboots into recovery - reinstall packages- phone reboots into clockwork mod- flash proper kernel
big risk flashing kernels though, i'd talk to designgears about it first, he bricked a captivate with an armani rom if i remember right. and i mean hard bricked, no boot loop no download mode, no recovery mode! just black screen!

yeah i did that too. it was from the SBL.bin and boot.bin that was included with the rom from samsung.
it had nothing to do with kernel flashing.
Moved to Q&A as not android development

the kernel from the armani worked fine with my captivate, but lacked recovery 2e or voodoo, so chrisryn made a kernel FROM the armani source for us to use on andromeda....my guess is that it will work fine for you.

signature verification failed

I am trying to install the latest cognition onto my samsung captivate. I have installed the gingerbread things successfully, however, when I try to flash the cognition kernal via clockwork mod, I get a signature verification error.
Furthermore, when I try to flash other kernals with an older CWM or the cf-roots, my phone just loops the boot screen. To fix it, all I do is put kernalKF1 back into the pda spot and start odin.
Also, I noticed that with zImage-root, I get the looping boot screen, but with the red fish instead.
Is the red fish supposed to still be in the boot screen after I flash the kernalKF1?
I am not sure if something is wrong with my odin or what... bottom line is, I want to install the latest cognition and be done with it. I have spent 7 hours on this already. lol at having an evening of free time.

Flashing Cognition 5V2 is a little "tirickier" than most. DG posted an updated initial kernel. I would flash the ODIN version in step 2. That kernel supports EXT4 formatting tools for a "stock" kernel which normally would not support voodoo. I would start off making sure you don't have lagfix enabled for system or data, flash KF1 (without bootloaders if you have them already) and then start with step 2 - ODIN. Hopefully that helps.

This helped me out, thanks a bunch I used odin for the kernal instead of cwm and it worked fine. I have no idea why I didn't even try that. Sad thing is, I figured it was only going to take maybe a minute or two, if that, to get cognition installed, and it did... haha, hours wasted.
Again, thank you.
I have a couple more questions, this time, concerning Cognition itself:
1) In the feature list of cognition, it says it has a custom launcher layout. Where can I find this? I just see stock touchwiz.
2) Everything that I install/download goes into my external sd card, so whenever I take it out, none of my apps work. How can I set it back to install into the internal sd?
