[Q] Trying to flash Serendipity 6.3...

I've never flashed a rom before. I currently have stock froyo with the paragon kernel i flashed using the app sgs kernel flasher. I have clockwork mod rom manager, I created a backup of my current rom. So then I tried installing the serendipity rom from the sd card but i get an error message. I read on the sticky on how to flash a custom ROM you need to use ODIN and flash back to stock 2.1 then do a master wipe and re root it and stuff.
Their link to download ODIN is broken so I don't know how to get it. And is there really no other way to flash it besides doing a master wipe and using ODIN?

flash to stock and master clear is not needed. what IS needed are specifics on WHAT error message you get when trying to flash the rom you want

The error message is
"E: failed to verify whole-file signature"
"E: signature verification failed"
"Installation aborted"
Then it brings be to the blue menu so i just select reboot system now

May be completely off, but it doesn't sound like you're actually in clockwork mod recovery, but rather stock recovery.
But here's the post with the one click odin with mirrors and I personally would suggest useing it since I generally like to stick to as clean a flash as I can:

Second, I don't know if you've ever seen MobileTechVids tutorial on how to flash custom roms, but I suggest you watch the full series first if you haven't already.

I watch the series and try and stick as close to the tut as I can when I'm unsure (or the one provided by the Rom maker as they know what's best for their rom)...
One suggestion, when flashing Serendipity disconnect your phone from cable right before the actual flashing (gave me a glitch in which I couldn't mount storage via usb). Other than that, read read read. I feel it's all I do when it comes to this stuff, but proper research is indispensible.

Is the text on Recovery mode blue or green? If its blue, you're on stock recovery.

Ok I got the stock rom flashed back and rooted it using one click. Now for some reason I can't reboot into clockwork recovery mode. I flashed it successfully. So i click on reboot into recovery and nothing happens. I try clicking on install room from sd card and that doesnt work either

Power off, hold 3 buttons att screen will come on. Keep holding. Screen will go off. Keep holding. Screen comes on again let off the power button but keep the volumes held, this will boot you into stock recovery, since you said you flashed cwm already I'm assuming you mean with rom manager, so the update.zip should be on your sdcard, so just reinstall packages twice and you should boot into cwm.

AIO tools work well and make flashing roms for new people easy and painless

On serendipities main "download" page they have instructions to install. In those instructions is a link to a file you can download. Place that file along with the serendipity 6.3.zip file in the root of your sd card. Use the " 3 button" technique or Rom managers "reboot to recovery" option to get into stock recovery. Hit "reinstall packages" once/possibly twice. That will put you into clockwork mod recovery. Select install zip from sd card, find the serendipity6.3.zip and click power to flash. Confirm. And after it does some stuff it will ask you to reboot. Upon reboot it will as if you want to enable lagfix. Hit plain "Yes". Watch it do its thing and viola...
You have the "dirty" way of how to flash serendipity... But first I please ask you to spend atleast a day reading this forum or others and understanding these instructions and the reasons behind them.

followed instructions off the website and still doesn't work
I was running 2.2 and have done a lot of reading a video watching (thanks Mobile Tech videos) and finally conjured the guts to flash serendipity.
I flashed stock using odin...that went great. Copied the update.zip to sd card. Installed zip twice in 2e recovery. Copied Serendipity.zip file to sd card. started in recovery mode, selected "install from sdcard" selected serendipity.zip file and it seemed to go through that process rather quickly. Then I selected reboot and then everything just started FCing all over the place. Can't even load the stock that I had on there. I don't know what to do. Help please. I can get it back into recovery mode. Tried doing the wipe data/factory reset. That did help either. Help please. I really want to try serendipity. Thanks again in advanced.

Did you run a restore using TiBu at all? Or was it just a straight flash from stock to Serendipity?
Plus, were you running a phone that came with 2.2 out of the box? Or did you upgrade to stock Froyo yourself?

I did run TB and I had originally flashed up to froyo (took me all night one night) and then went through the process I explained and hit the dead end. I finally was able to get odin to read the phone and flash back to stock. It was a learning process. I realized that I needed not only the Serendipity_6.3.zip file but ALSO the kitchen file to included with it. That wasn't in the directions I don't think. Finally got it all on there. I love it now. I appreciate everyone's help. Any word on a how-to for Bluedipity?

Hey guys, so I had MIUI since it came out and kept updating it every friday like I'm sure everyone else does that has it, but today I wanted to try out a Gingerbread ROM other than MIUI or CM7 so I went and tried to install Mosaic IV. I followed the tutorial on MobileTechVideos for installing it and when I got to the part where I had to install the zip from the sd card I did it and it got stuck at formatting partitions. So I waited a while, about ten minutes, then took out the battery and tried starting over from stock again. Then I realized that I was supposed to use a different kernel for Mosaic IV then the one Josh used in the video. So I downloaded that kernel and used that one instead of the one he used in the tutorial. And I couldn't get into recovery mode with it. So I flashed to stock again and redid the whole thing, this time I got into recovery and flashed it but it still got stuck at formatting partitions. So at this point I was like crap I have to get a different ROM. So I tried flashing Serendipity and that wouldn't install either. Then I tried MIUI again to at least get back to what I had earlier today, and I got an error while flashing the captivate-efsbackup zip in recovery. I have no idea what to do, all I want is to just get off of the stock firmware which im stuck with for now since I have to go to work in a little bit. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I had a similar problem, and the ultimate fix for me was this:
Flash back to eclair stock (which you did)
Master Clear (aka format internal sd - make sure to back up your stuff first!)
Install CWM (may have to go manually - renaming to update.zip and reinstalling packages)
Wipe dalvik cache and cache partition, as well as user data
Install a stable Froyo ROM (take your pick, preferably a full-wipe with no bootloaders)
Reboot to CWM and do a second dalvik/cache/user data cleaning
(If you're going GB)
reboot to download mode
flash stock GB (WATCH OUT FOR BOOTLOADERS!)
boot it up, let it settle, reboot to CWM
flash your GB rom.
(If not)
Go where you would go from a stable Froyo Rom.
That's how I got back from a messed up phone with GB bootloaders to a working Mosaic installation. I can't say it will definitely work for you, but it may give you some ideas.

+1 get clockwork recovery...you need to make sure the rom you are flashing is compatible with the version of CWR you are using.
For example a rom that needs to be installed with CWR3 you will need to install the zip presumably from CWR2. Pull the battery and reboot back to recovery - you should now be in the updated version of CWR. Then for safety sake - re install your zip.
Reboot and you should be all set.
I had lots of trouble going from 2.2 to 2.3. Flashing between 2.3 roms is very easy comparatively

so your saying that you went to a gingerbread rom straight from MIUI? if that's true it failed because you didn't have the gingerbread bootloaders before you installed the rom

I did have the bootloaders, I went back to stock before I did anything just to be safe. I'm gonna try what the other guys said though right now, wish me luck haha

Alright so I have Andromeda 2.1 which is a froyo rom. Which method should I use to get to stock GB?

I flashed the gingerbread stock rom and have it rooted with xcal's kernel, but when i flashed mosaic IV it got stuck at formatting partitions and i pulled the battery after about 15 minutes and then restarted my phone to find it stuck in a bootloop. So i had to start from stock again and now im back to gingerbread stock with root. I'm kinda scared to try again because it takes me like 30 minutes to get back to gingerbread stock with root. I think ill just stick with stock for a little bit

[Q] Rooting confusion

My brother rooted his Captivate 6 months ago or more. He kept the stock ROM, and now would like to try a custom ROM. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember much about what he did. He said he downloaded a program, plugged in his phone, and it rooted him.
I assumed that I should be able to boot into recovery and flash a ROM from there. I looked up how to boot into recovery, and tried the 'hold down vol/up and power on' approach. Instead of a recovery menu, it goes directly to some kind of update screen with this text:
movi-check start..!!
... <lines removed>
install default apk files please wait
I've searched for these lines, and cannot find why this is coming up. I did find that this should have ended with a message that the install finished, but after leaving it for 10 minutes, it seemed to just reboot. Perhaps the message did come up, and then it immediately rebooted.
Does anyone know why the phone is in this state where there is no recovery menu? If I install ROM Manager and flash ClockworkMod is that likely to work and not cause harm?

Need a little more info... is it stock 2.1 or 2.2? If it's Froyo 2.2 then the stock recovery is tricky to get around if you're new to flashing or modding.

Thanks. It is stock 2.2.
I am not new to flashing, and I'm comfortable with adb and other tools. I'm just not familiar with the Samsung Captivate.
Is the screen that comes up with 'movi_check' the stock recovery? it appears to be automatically trying to update something.

Probably just be easier to use Odin to flash stock 2.1 and root and get recovery on it. Then you can flash any (2.2) ROM you want on it, or you could use Odin or Heimdall to flash Gingerbread onto it (recommended). There are tutorials all in the development section.

If its a newer build it wont like 2.1 (alot of newer builds bootloop with 2.1). If your captivate is one of the newer builds and has the 3e recovery here is a guide to get past it.
As to flashing Gb you will need GB bootloaders wich carries risk. Please READ on how too and risk that may happen. Its a small risk but you can hard brick the phone if you mess up bootloaders or if the booloader fails to flash.
Another option is flashing KB1 2.2 froyo and using Desing Gear's Cog 4.x.x kernel. You will have clock work mod. There's a ton of ways to do it most of wich are in the forums already so search and if you have doubts ask

It crossed my mind that newer builds wouldn't like 2.1, but I wasn't 100%, that's why I recommended going to GB. Just reading the instructions a few times and being prepared the risk is very low to hard brick. Just make sure to know exactly what you're doing when you choose which files for the primary and secondary boot loaders.

But said person is asking info on something as simple as rooting, Hence there are easier less evasive ways to get past 3e.

Just to clarify, I'm not asking about rooting, but about flashing and the recovery console. I'm an EVO user, and I just don't know the idiosyncrasies of the Captivate.
Am I correct that the messages I get when trying to go to recovery (starting with movi_check start) are normal, and that after those messages I should get the recovery console? If so, it seems to be stuck on the "install default apk files please wait" step, as this doesn't seem to complete.
I do see the steps on how to flash, and can follow them carefully, but since I am not getting the recovery console, I am not sure what might be wrong.

You can't flash a rom with stock recovery. You need clockwork mod wich can be achieve by using rom manager (needs root) or flashign with Odin a kernel that has it built in

Thanks for your help. I do understand I can't flash with stock recovery.
Both the 'Read BEFORE flashing' and the 'How to Install a custom ROM' guides instruct to install clockwork mod. I am aware that installing a new recovery needs to be done before flashing on probably any device.
I guess my primary confusion was whether the 'movi_check start' verbage is normal to see when I am trying to go to Recovery before installing Clockwork. Another google search finally found a hit that says it is normal to see this. I'm still not clear whether I should be concerned that it hangs on the "install default apk files" step.
Since it hangs, I don't ever get any kind of recovery menu, so it wasn't obvious to me that I was actually in the stock recovery.
Assuming this doesn't indicate any issues, I'll proceed with the instructions and all should be well.

Clockwork Issue

I used SuperOneClick to root my phone, and now I'm looking through the Captivate Guide to see what else I can do with an unrooted phone. I started with Rom Manager.
So I clicked "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery," and it was fine. I select my phone (Galaxy S - Captivate, not the Captivate MTD). I pressed "Backup Current ROM," but when I press "Okay," it restarts my phone to the blue menu. So I press "reset phone now," and I try to start from the beginning again. According to the guide, it says to restart it until it works. It's rebooting each time instead with no change. When I go to manage and restore backups, nothing is listed.
When I load up Rom Manager, under "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery," it just says
"Current recovery: Clockwork mod 2.5.1.2
Latest Recovery: Clockwork mod 2.5.1.2"
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm using stock 2.2 Froyo and GO Launcher with Cartoon Theme (if that matters).

Do I need SGS Kernel Flasher? If so, what kernel do I need?

Why not just flash a KB1 kernel with cwm in it? I know Desing Gears cog 4.x.x kernels works, and probably eXistZ's kb1 kernel as well. They have cwm cooked in the + few other things like Voodoo, etc.
Also I believe your supposed to click install package as well. I could be wrong since its been a long while since I've used that method.

I'm much too amateur with phones to do that.
The only reason I decided to finally root my phone was because my warranty is up, and because I found TheUnlocker's youtube account + Captivate guide. I figured with step-by-step instructions, there's no way I could screw up. Boy, was I wrong.

I plan to use Cyanogenmod 7 eventually. The reason I haven't flashed a ROM is because I'm not 100% sure how yet. That's why I'm taking lots of small steps.
A lot of these ROMs also mention Odin, which I didn't use. I used SuperOneClick.

Okay, so even though I followed all of his steps, I get to the part where I'm supposed to find the MIUI file in my SD card, and it doesn't exist... even though I transferred it over. How come my phone doesn't recognize it? Phone is barely functional at the moment after I flashed it back to 2.1, and I'm encountering a lot of lag/bugs. If I plug in my phone to my computer without Debugging on, it fails to download drivers.
Does anyone know the best fix out of this situation?

[Q] Samsung Captivate, froyo KB1, recovery 3e, can't flash recovery?

I've successfully rooted my phone thanks to SuperOneClick, but am not able to figure out how to flash the recovery so that I can use ROM Manager.
I have a stock KB1 image, on an I897 Captivate from AT&T. I'm trying to get the recovery image (currently 3e) set so that I can bypass the signature check, which is what I keep running into.
I installed ROM Manager (the free one, at least until pay day) and tried to use that to flash CWM recovery. Every time I boot into recovery, I run into the confounded signature check.
I have a Superuser app installed from the Market, version 3.0.6(40) and su binary ver 2.3.1-ef.
I'm not typically a dunce, since I've been able to install and run a Linux server at home more than once. But this has got me stumped.
Please let me know what additional information I might need to provide to target guidance.

On a personal note, don't waste time on Rom Manager. Its trash for SGS line.

I hadn't seen that list previously. I spent 4 hours last night and three hours today reading stickies and stumbling through search results. That guide for fixing recovery might just be the answer I was looking for.
Is there a different "ROM manager" app that you recommend, or just bare-backing it (which I'm not afraid to do, either)?

Don't bother with it. IMO if you like stock froyo, I recommend just flashing Cognition 4.x.x. Based on KB2 stock looking, but tweaked for speed. CWM is easiest achieved by flashing a kernel with it baked in it.

to skip the recovery crap and rooting and everything else....
take phone out of box. (done)
download and run odin3 flashing util 1.8x Odin3v1.85.zip
boot phone into download mode
flash ginberbread bootloaders http://www.multiupload.com/QQ3LFSRBMD
reboot into download mode
flash custom kernel with CWM built-in pick one in dev section. ANY NOT miui/cm7 kernel in dev section.
reboot into recovery (cwm now!!)
mounts / usb/ copy rom to phone (if not on sdcard already can be done any time before)
cwm flash rom.
** cwm2 kernel for eclair/froyo roms & cwm3/4/5 kernel for gingerbread up

If you goal is to flash a new rom then TRusselo is right. Easier to just flash a kernel with CWM.

Rooted via super 1click and was unable to get clockwork recovery to load said it flashed but would only boot default recovery, soft bricked it 3 times then straight busted it getting the forced upload key press thing had to use USB jig to get download then used Odin to repair firmware some how 3g got switched off. Anyone got any ideas on how to switch back on my guess is key pad access but don't know the code amorphous smart apn from market but don't have the phone yet to try it my friend is gonna bring it this weekend just wanted to find out the best way to switch it back on before I get it back because grs gonna be there this time and I don't want to make him nervous or have him think I'm gonba mess up his phone

Stop flashing and read the stickies. If you tried using rom manager or update.zip it wont work unless you fix the 3e recovery issue. Its easier to flash a kernel with CWM baked in to it. For example if you are on froyo Cognition 4.x.x (search for it) kernel should work just fine.
