If you want Froyo then your only options are to flash back to stock and then use kies mini to get the update or flash a custom ROM based on the new release.

Can I flash back using one clicklag fix or Titanium Backup?
And, I download kies.
Titanium backup only backs up your apps and data.
One Click Lag Fix? -- is a.. lag fix.
Are you still on 2.1? Or are you on 2.2 right now?
one click had a button to unroot. 2.1. [How do I "flash back to stock"?]
This one [STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY if you have the three button recovery.
This one I897UCJH7 - OTA System, Kernel, Modem - Clockwork Flashable - Rooted if you want to use CWM.
This one {Stock Rom} Odin JF6 with 3 button fix if you need the three button fix.
I installed official 2.2 via Kies right over rooted 2.1 with no issues. After the install, TiBu was still there, but would not work until I rooted 2.2. What I am saying is that, in my experience, flashing back to stock before updating via Kies was not necessary and by skipping that step all of my aps, SMS, and call logs migrated over seamlessly.

Hi.. I want to keep the apps/data/msg etc on the phone, can I flash the official branded firmware through Odin without it wiping the phone?
I'm sick and tired of Kies f**king me over, it offers an update but FirmwareUpdate crashes whilst downloading the update (tried on Win7 and XP, multiple cables, reinstalls etc)
Kies is offering me the JVH update.. I'm on JP6 (2.2) and am rooted through SuperOneClick and have flashed the Speedmod Froyo kernel, undone lagfix
I'm guessing this should be possible as I have updated to JP5 and then JP6 through Kies in the past and all the data was preserved.

Every firmware will you flash via odin....everysingle one will wipe all your data... There are some cases when it won't but after flashing you'll get FC of all your apps...
If you're running a lagfix you must deactivate it when you want toinsstall a 1 file firmware If you want to flash a 3 file firmware you shouldn;t care about it
yes, the ROM wipes PERSONAL data, like messages, phone book and so on,,,but NOT the SD card, so basiccaly if you back up these data via Titanium back up, the back up folder will be stored on the SD and will remain.
Your data is wiped but sdcard isnt

Thanks guys for the replies, knew it was a good idea to ask before I found out the hard way!
Guess I'll just wait until Samsung fix that p.o.s. Kies
Might be a good time to come over to custom roms and f**k kies off for good!

There is titanium backup, but don't backup system apps. Use sms backup&restore app to backup messages, it works from 2.1-2.3.4

flashing firmware with odin will format only data. not sd card. do a nandroid backup before you flash.

Personally, if it were my phone I would have backed up the important stuff and update through Odin but it's my gf's phone and she doesn't want me messing up her homescreen/msgs/contacts/settings/apps etc..
I ended up emailing and *****ing to Samsung about Kies and they've suggested I take the phone down to one of their Service Centres and let them deal with it, might try that out.
hello my phone is on firmware 2.3.4, baseband i9000xxjvs, kernel 2.6.35.7-i9000xxjvr and build gingerbread.xxjvr.
i want to update to 2.3.5 completely but is this possible without losing all settings?
when the update is done through kies you don't lose anything so is this also possible with odin or is there another way of doing it?

No as far as i know, you could flash a no-wipe version of the rom via cwm, but i would not recommend it.
The other solution is to backup and restore with Titanium backup.
backup and restore with titanium backup is the best thing..
but as 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 differs not really you can search for a CWM-Version of 2.3.5 without wipe, than youre settings will stay. Via odin afaik its not possible to flash a non-wipe ROM..

I have done this without repartition JVQ->JVR, via Odin, and it worked.
Of course, it was: stock to stock, odexed to odexed, another combi may not work.
And, although I agree with you that titanium is the best, for some apps I experienced fc after restore, so I had to restore, uninstall, install and then make backup.
Hi everyone,
I used custom roms for a long time and after that i decided to upgrade original samsung rom via kies. so i downloaded turkish rom from samfirmware.com and now i connect to kies and it says this device is not official samsung device and doesnt upgrade my samsung in the past there was method called spoof kies however it doesnt work with latest kies?
so how can i upgrade the official rom?
Just download right firmware from samfirmware.com and flash it via Odin.
It is that simple. Kies is ****
Why are you using kies? I used kies once when I first got my SGS and it almost screwed my phone up. Its a known fact that kies is crap, stick to odin and CWM
Sent using TCP/IP
Just find out one of the previous ROMS that was officially available for your country or region. Flash that ROM via Odin. Then, you should be able to connect to Kies and update without any problems.

The newer versions of Kies are better now. Also, the advantage of using Kies to update is that your data isn't wiped.

You can always try Kies again and again, but I stongly recommend Odin method.
With Odin, I'm quite sure you won't get bad headache

Well, you can back everything up with apps like Titanium Backup, but certain apps won't work properly after restoration, especially games. Fruit Ninja, for example, will no longer be able to save new high scores after restoration, and gameloft games don't work at all after restoration. Upgrading by Kies avoids these problems. But I guess that if you don't play games that much, Odin is the better choice. However, restoring apps takes up some time, while using Kies is faster.
I apologize in advance if this has already been asked and answered, but I did search and couldn't find a definitive answer.
I have a "German" Note which came with 2.3.5 initially, I did one OTA update (to KK9) and it appears that luckily for me, I was still able to use the ZergRush exploit and root it and get the custom CWM, etc.
Now as I sit on KK9, I see that there is another OTA update available to me (KL7?) that clocks in at about 71MB.
With root, custom CWM, and CF-Root 5.0 at the moment, I don't want to lose that in an update.
So, is it safe to OTA or should I download something else and flash it via CWM? If so, what should I download and how should I flash it?
Thanks! Just don't want to brick or loose root.
-Rob
(From memory only
You can "safely" update: that is, some users have reported no problems but I've already read issues with backup managers not being able to unfreeze apps, boot loops, and keyboard/random apps crashing when you try to open them.
KL7 is a stunning update (my battery now lasts forever). I'm going to root later in the summer once everything becomes stable.

After update, you cant root it with zergrush exploit as previous. Better you download full rom, install mobile odin pro, n flash it with 'ever root' option. So will get root during flashing
Thank you!
How can I confirm that the update being offered via OTA from KK9 is indeed KL7? Is that the most appropriate and current update path to follow? I know there are many different builds for potentially different devices, and I just want to make sure I am on the right path, and am merely assuming at this point that KL7 is the next step for my Note.
Thanks again, your advice makes much sense, and with already being Root and having Mobile Odin Pro, this seems like a much more intelligent approach. I want my device to be rooted, but rock stock and absolutely stable otherwise.
Regards,
-Rob
I can only say 71MB is almost exactly what I remember the KL7 update being. Other than that, I don't know how you can check (alternatively, you could download the update from XDA, apply it, then check for OTAs to see whether or not it was KL7).

So, what if you have CWM installed? Can I use Mobile Odin still? Or will this get rid of my CMW recovery and/or screw something else up?
if you use cwm still u can flash it to kl7, but again same, u cant root it. So using mobile odin pro, u can root kl7 during flashing by selecting 'eve root' n again u can cf root n get cwm for kl7 as you did it b4
Edit : yes with installed cwm still can use mobile odin, n remember u need pro version of mobile odin

Got the pro version. Thanks!
So just to make sure, coming from Stock KK9, rooted + with CWM:
Flash KL7 w/ ever root option Odin Pro
Re-install KL7 version of CWM.
Should all be set?
This is non-wipe too right? So everything should remain in tact?
Exactly, and when v dont select re partition box, it shud remain intact.(here also v dont selecting) But always keep backup b4 these kind of stuff.
Edit: I was able to get my phone flashed and updated to KL8. The process I used I descibed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21153439#post21153439
Ok, I'm using Mobile Odin Pro to try to flash to KL7 from KK5. I have root + CWM in KK5, use Mobile Odin according to the instructions to flash KL7...but I always get stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy Note" boot screen. No matter how long I leave it, it will stay that way. To recover, I have to use Odin on PC to reflash KK5 and then reroot. Any suggestions on what else to try?
I couldn't get flashing with Mobile Odin to work correctly. I ended up getting the update to work by using CWM to flash the KL8 firmware, while pre-rooting. I then had to fix the keyboard issue by flashing the CSC, as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997.
Once I did that, I installed CMW Manager again using the method found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360. With the firmware updated and the radio working (phone wouldn't work in KL7) I just restored everything from a Titanium Backup file and it's all working.

I have the same problem, but with KK9. I too stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy Note" boot screen.

I did it like schaggo described in this thread
And it worked for me!!!
I have the captivate from rogers (canadian SGH-I896)
It is running KH2 (RWC) firm ware according to Kies.
I rooted the phone and was uninstalling some bloatware via titanium backup
when I musta removed something unholy.
As when I tried to close titanium backup I had no home screen at all. Upon reboot I still have no home screen. I still ahve the notification menu pull down.
When I receive a txt I can type and reply to it but I can do nothing that involves the homescreen it is completely blank.
I tried to factory reset the phone but it did not fix the issue. I tried searching and could not find anyone who had the same problem.
Any advice?
EDIT - I followed this link (Samsung Galaxy S APK List)with respect to uninstalling the bloatware:
But, as it was not rogers specific I removed all the rogers stuff (Account, ring back, etc) I also did remove Y! Finance clock which I have now read was also a bad idea.
There might be an easier way but I would try flashing a new rom. Or flashing back to stock using Odin or heimdall. Do you have a custom recovery?

I was using the stock ROM from kies. And I had no flash back up or anything to fix my phone (which in the future I will make sure I do!)
When I try to reflash my ROM using kies it says I already have the newest one. so I reckon I will have to download the stock rom from somewhere else and flash it my self?
Should I go back words to Eclair and then reflash using keis to gingerbread?
I wouldn't worry with kies. There is a heimdall one click that will take you back to stock froyo or gingerbread ( your choice) and will already be rooted and I'm pretty sure it removes bloat ware. Just download it to your computer. Put your phone into download mode hook it up and run the program.
