[Q] My Captivate Needs Help Bad ! ! ! - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 2 month old AT&T Captivate and about a month ago I loaded the Andromeda v2.0 MOD and love it. Everything was working fine until about a week ago when my external speaker stopped working. I turned to the Andromeda programmers and one of them had me upgrade to v1.2 but that didn't help and they helped me downgrade back to stock so I can turn the phone back to AT&T.
But along the way something happened and now the AT&T white flash screen just flashes on and off every two seconds. I've tried every process on this web site including building a JIG to force the phone into download mode but that didn't work either.
Does anyone have any idea how to get this crippled Captivate back to stock?
Thank you.

So, when it started flashing was it running the stock ROM? If so call At$T and get a replacement shipped to you.

Does the phone go back in download mode?
Did you try the one click Odin or the manuel one?
If you have tried one of them try the other one and see if that works and also I believe you would get more responses if you post this in Captivate questions and answers rather then in development.

To fix the speaker problem, you need to take off the back cover, and press down on the bezel around the speaker (the speaker unit can pop out).
Not much help for your bootloop (which is what sounds like is happening- search for this phrase, perhaps you'll have some luck).
Good luck,
AoN

Do you mean take off the battery cover then spess down on the speaker or take off the battery cover then the back cover under the battery and the rest of the back of the phone?

There is an Odin 1-Click and an Odin full version that is not 1-click. Which one did you use? Can you get into download mode after a battery pull?

Hope that helped.

I use the One Click. When I pull the battery and put it back in it does nothting. I have to push the power button and it goes into bootloop.

1. Pull the battery out and put back in. DO NOT TURN PHONE BACK ON..
2. open odin.
3. Hold Down the volume up and volume down buttons at the same time while plugging in the USB Cable.
4. once you are in download mode click start in odin.
Have you tried this?

Yes this has happened to me before build yourself a jig or buy one from Mobile Tech Videos and use the link I have above to get back to stock.
You must be a build 1010 or higher because we (im a build 1011) cannot use the 1-click. Do not worry you didnt brick your phone you'll just need a jig and after that your smooth sailing if you follow the instructions in that post

Is the battery charged?

I had this exact problem. Don't worry though, the fact that your phone is in a bootloop is actually a really good sign, it means you're not permanently bricked.
The newer builds (1010 and up) can't use odin 1 click to get back to stock (can't remember the reason though). There's a post I'll look up for you that shows you how to use odin3 to get back to stock.
What you need to do is build yourself a jig (or buy a premade one) because our phones don't have the three key combo enabled (the volume up+ down & power key etc). I'm on my phone atm so I'll have to go find the link for the jig guide too.
Edit: the odin3 guide was already posted above, but here's the link again for the sake of redundancy:

And here's a guide for the jig:

I'm pretty sure the battery can be fully drained, the method you posted would put the device into download mode.

need alt ways to get into recovery other than adb and holding down the volume keys.
i bricked my captivate using the odin one click recovery going from the i900 rom to stock. odin had froze and i restarted trying again only to see the phone and computer screen.
sorry a bit frustrated ....ask all the questions u need

1) Remove the battery
2) Remove the SIM
3) Reinsert the battery
4) Run ODIN (Note: I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 so I ran ODIN in Administrator mode by right-clicking on the file in Explorer and choosing the 'Run As Administrator' option. I would suggest doing this to make sure you have no permissions issues with the program.)
5) Depress both the up and down volume buttons on the phone at the same time
6) While you are depressing both the up and down volume buttons, plug in the USB cable.
No need to depress the power button or do anything else. The phone should go right into Download mode with the little yellow construction guy.
Then ODIN will see the COM port you are connecting with and you can just click Start.

I'm not so sure that it's not brickable, I'm pretty sure I bricked mine...
I was trying to load the international galaxy s 2.2 rom using odin 3 and for some reason I got stuck in recovery mode and could do nothing (this was after it finished loading the rom). I couldn't make it go to the download mode. Anything I did just took me right back to recovery.
I'd really love to know what you guys would have done, I'm new to android the captivate is my first.
Thanks in advance for your input.
By the way, I was talking it through with a buddy and we came up with a possible cause. I was rooted when I tried loading the 2.2 rom. Would that have bricked it?

Yes, the buttons are different if you attempted to flash a Galaxy S rom, the typical button hold will not work.

Hey guys, if you are stuck on that phone+!+computer screen, do this to get into download mode!!
1. Take out your sim card, sd card, battery and open Odin3(you must open odin3 before you start or it won't flash. Do NOT put your sim or sd card back in).
2. Put the battery in.
3. Plug in USB. (the phone will power on to that screen)
4. Hold down both Volume keys, and then push power. Hold it and dont let go.
5. Wait for it to go black and return to that horrible screen.
6. When it goes black the 2nd time release power and keep holding the voldown and volup.
note: THE STUPID SCREEN IS NOW FIXED!!

I did have my phone plugged into power when I was trying the button push combos.
I didn't, however, try holding down just the volume button so I can't know for sure if that could have worked.

So I can't get any button combo to work, and all I get is White AT&T screen (if unplugged) and a frozen loading screen(if plugged into usb). Any ideas?
I think I have the same problem.
Used Odin one click to flash stock rom and then tried to flash JH7, but had some troubles with odin when trying flashing... tried to reboot the phone by pulling out the battery and now I can't turn it on, just have an image on the screen: Phone has troubles with connecting to PC and that's it...
oh yeah, that helped me:
1. Remove battery & usb
2. Open odin.
3. Plug in usb.
4. Hold vol down.
5. Put battery in.

ok so i was running a devil kernel on jellybean 4.2 and for some strange reason the rom started acting funny and gave me a message saying i had to type in a password ti decrpyt storage even though i have no passwords on my samsung I897. So i decided to flash back to stock and start all over again from scratch using odin one click but in the middle of downloading my phone was disconnected and it gave me the bricked screen shortly after. Now i am unable to do anything on this phone ive tried pushing the volume buttons and taking the battery and sim card out while running odin 3 again trying to force it back into download but so far no progress has been made. If any one can help me it is much apprecitated.

[Q] Another my phone is ... Broken

And here was me thinking I was shielded from a broken phone by a working 3 button recovery -
So some of this is my own fault, I basically flashed CODE_I9000XWJM8.tar without anything else due to a misreading of instructions the problem is my phone will not start at all now, nothing no lights no button combination working zilch the phone responds to nothing.
I've taken the battery out, sim out and memory card put it back in still nothing!
I've got it on charge at the moment and the back is getting warm but no battery sign on the screen etc anyone have any ideas?
What have you done?
Can you come to download mode?
Have you flashed pit 512, CSC and modem file?
Which version of ODIN 1.0 or 1.3?

Nope that doesn't work either -
If I had re-partition checked while only flashing CODE_I9000XWJM8.tar would that cause this? I suspect that is why im in the situation I am now because I had re-partition checked :O

I think you are lost. Maybe you can try to put the usb cable on the phone at switch it to your pc. You can also try to charge it for a while.
Thank you for your help Its not fixed, but I've called voda and they are sending me a new one, lesson learned lol..
Just in case anyone has the same problem and comes across this thread I solved the issue.
Basically the following steps -
Boot up Odin
Remove battery from phone
Plug phone into USB
While doing the key sequence for download mode push the battery back in
And I was now in download mode, it took awhile to sort out after that, I actually had to rip the battery while installing the PIT file as it just kept hanging at that point, eventually I seen the phone!pc sign and for some reason it allowed me to flash everything back using Odin.
(insurance claim cancelled with voda lol)

anyone help please!!
Hi Matt. I'm pretty sure you're not bricked, but you are at a point that might give you a little difficulty getting into download mode. Try the following:
Download Mode
You don't need to be at a "phone> ! <computer" screen to do this either, though you might need to try it a few times.
If you have the Android SDK installed you can type:
adb reboot download
To have it switch to download mode. If you don't have the Android SDK installed you can search the forums for directions or I'll post back later with how to install it.
Another option, of course, would be to create a jig or buying one pre-made. I don't believe you're at this point yet.
If those methods don't work...
Pull your Sim Card, Battery, and any External SDCard
Turn on Odin
Plug your Phone back into the USB Cable (battery out still)
While holding down the Volume +/- Button - put your battery back in.
It should go into DOWNLOAD MODE.
If you get the Gray Battery Charge screen - it didnt work. Rinse and Repeat until it goes into the DOWNLOAD MODE. Might take a few tries.

Ok - I have never seen that happen before. But... unfortunately I think your phone truly is bricked.
I mean it looks like it isn't getting past the "boot loader" (sorry not a dev so the technical term might be a little different.) to even allow you to get to a recovery mode.
So unless MikeyMike or some other dev has some way for you to re-write the sbl.bin file to allow your phone to boot - it's pooched

so not even a jig would fix this?!!
Doesn't appear so - It won't get past the AT&T screen... does your computer even recognize the phone when it's plugged in?
I don't think it is booting up enough for you to get to the recovery menus... so sounds like the sbl.bin is corrupted - which unfort is a true brick.
But you could try the Jig as it is pretty inexpensive. Post here to let us know if it worked or not.

lol thats just a residual electricity in the phone that is still being discharged after you unplug it... kinda like static electricity and a light bulb.
But.. I would still try the jig as a last ditch effort - it is possible that it would work...

[Q] In a LOT of trouble!

So a few days back i flashed the serendipity VII rom on to my previouly 2.2 Cappy, and it worked like a charm... a day later i was experimenting with a few ROMS all 2.3, and they worked, and to my luck I flashed a 2.2 ROM (Cognition 4) (by mistake i might add) and there it was a complete black screen brick!
since then Iv tried various methods to bring it back to life, the 3button thing, the taking the battery out holding down the 3 buttons connecting the usb and putting the battery back in, then releasing power only... Iv tried to even get it JTAGed, which was a disaster since the JTAG guy tried and cudnt get the thing to show connectivity... ANY HELP??
I fail to accept that this is the end... Please HELPP!!!!!
just keep trying to get into dl mode by using other usb ports, a jig, holding buttons while battery removed and install battery then plug in phone, happened to me plenty of times but was persistant that it finally got into dl mode.
Try making a jig and putting phone in download mode then flash stock through odin -- do a search for jig in the captivate forums. It saved me many times. You can even make one for about $1.
If you had gingerbread then you may need to use the i9000 version of entering download mode. The key combination is different. Search around on the forum as plenty have already mentioned what it is. I just don't remember off the top of my head.
if it will not power on at all....it doesnt look good.
try holding volume down and power...see if that brings up download mode. a jig is only $8 shipped to your home and will work.
i had a similar scenario and a jig brought my cappy back to life!! ive had the same phone since september, the jig has saved me from at least 8 new phones
I have seen a black screen for download mode. The only way I knew I was in download was when I saw the yellow band appear in Odin. Open Odin, and try different button combinations that will get you into download mode until you see Odin recognize your phone.
I'm sure you've tried, but these are 2 other key combos. I've had that happen to me in the past and it can be frustrating.
1. volume up + volume down
2. volume down + power
3. volume down + home (softkey) then power (this is the one that worked for me)
4. volume down + menu (softkey) then power
Hope everything works out for you. If all else fails, I'm sure a jig will work.
I learned this in the days of old, when we were flashing the baked Froyo's. Don't know if it applies or if you've tried it already, but what used to work for me was:
Open Odin
Pull the battery out, put it back in...don't turn it on.
Hold the volume down button
Plug in the usb
At no point in the process should you ever touch the power button. For your Odin version, I'd recommend using the Stock Odin, get factory and then try flashing your custom Rom again.
(Edit: I say volume down because that's the current button to enter download mode with Gingerbread. It used to be Volume Up and Down at the same time.)
ok first this does not belong in the dev section! belongs in Q&A so thing will get closed pretty soon. also other than a correct jtag u cant recover with jig, button combo or voodoo magic. u just mixed a i9000 GB bootloader along with a captivate froyo secondary boot which the Cog4 ROM has. use search and i think you can find someone who offers a jtag service
Well, I've seen a few mention it, but I think your going to need to make or puchase a jig. Hit radioshack and get 3 100kohm resistors, about $1. The directions are all over the forums here. I'd be willing to bet that will fix you up.
Also, once in a while it may still be alive even though the screen is black. Like someone else said, go ahead and start Odin, then plug your phone into USB. See if there is any response from Odin. It's worth a shot.
Either way, it's good to have a Jig handy.

you need dl mode to do that, he's not even getting power up. go to att store and say it wont turn on today gimme replacement.
How did someone with just 2 posts make a thread in here? I thought you had to have 10+ posts just to post in a thread.
just contact samsung the captivate should be in warraty untill oct2011.. i also bricked my phone while on serendipity VII see Q&A Soft brick or hard Brick.i had my phone stuck on the battery charge screen. was not able to get to download mode or recovery and my battery wouldnt charge . so i called samsung just gave them my imei number and they said it was under warranty until oct 2011. i did not tell them i bricked it while flashing roms. i just told them my phone wont charge or turn on. i sent my phone to the samsung repair center in dallas tx. my phone was fix at no charge even though i had it rooted and running a custom rom. samsung just fixed my looping battery screen and put there stock froyo erasing all my apps and data.it took about 2 weeks to get all this done. got my phone back this monday and everything is working great....
so just contact samsung and say the phone wont turn on dont say you rooted it or flashed a room. samsung wont check to see if its rooted all they care about is that you didnt drop the phone or something like that.

ok first this does not belong in the dev section!

Same exact thing happened to me on my last phone. Your phone is dead, dead, dead. Hard bricked. Nothing will bring it back. Take it to an AT&T store and tell them you were upgrading to 2.2 and the screen went black and now it wont come back on.
There is no jig or JTAG that will fix it, trust me, I tried

at&t might help, but you have to hassle alot.Just contact samsung they will help for sure.i just sent them my bricked phone and they fixed it in two weeks at no charge. samsung will do it for free, im living prof.
I dont really buy into the fact that its dead, no way... its just that the revisions on the boot.bin and sbl.bin are different... shouldn't JTAG work? and cant claim warranty cuz im not in the US!!! there must be a way people.... im faar too poor to just give up without a fight!!!

[Q] I messed up. Can get into download mode that's all..

I hope someone can help me here, I'm posting with the belief that this may be a simple enough problem (With the hope).
I tried to install a Custom Recovery on my Galaxy S using this tutorial - wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_galaxysmtd
I managed to get to step 6, and a blue bar appeared, but then i could not do step 7.
Now i cannot boot into recovery mode, nor will the phone boot past the Samsung Galaxy S logo.
I can still get into download mode, but Odin does not detect the phone.
. I have changed cable and tried different versions of Odin..
When i turn on the phone normally it shows the Samsung Galaxy S logo, blinks, and then reboots and does the same.
When i try to enter recovery, i get the same, unless i connect it to the PC. I then get an 8 pointed star, like the loading flash circle thing - the same as a flash video loading except it does not move.
I have also removed the battery and tried to enter recovery and download mode while inserting the battery.
I have removed the SIM and battery for a few minutes.
when i try to start Zadig, with the phone connected in Download mode, i get "Gadget Serial" as the device connected. I used to get "Samsung USB Composite Device"
I have tried many different things and read over the recommended threads on this forum. I think i need a bit more pointing in the right direction.
I really hope somebody can help me. I am very worried that i may have bricked it.
Thank you.
Try this:
This feature is great for people who
a) Have a bad KIES flash
b) Stuff up their phone somehow
c) Accidentally flash something dodgy via ODIN
d) Some other random occurence
To test this feature you just need to start with your phone turned off... Best way to be sure is to remove the battery.
Then
1. Put battery back in
2. Press and hold Volume Up + Home Key
3. Continue holding those buttons and then press and hold power button.
4. When you see the logo pop up release power button ONLY
5. Keep holding two buttons from step 2 until you enter recovery mode.
I hope this helps?
Also have you tried everything on this thread:

I hadn't seen that thread, but i have gone over tons of them Thanks for reply.
I eventually got Odin to detect it and I tried this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
It came up red and said failed.
I closed odin and disconnected the phone. Now i can't even turn it on.. Nothing. I am hoping the battery died, and it's a coincidence..
No response at all to any buttons... I haven't done anything else.
If i can get it to power up again, i'll try those tips.

Ok, Don't worry, Charge your phone battery to 100%, leave over night. ( keep charger connected to your phone overnight)
Best to have a fully charged battery in these situations!
Keep calm, and read and prepare what you want to do next.. Don't try everything in a frantic effort to get your phone started again.
I know it's difficult, but there are lots of threads on how to rectify most problems.
I wish you Good luck!!
sorry to ask some stupid question, but can u make sure what versiom ur fone is?
is it i9000?, or i9001 or i9003? or korean anycall? as far as i know, flashing i9000 ROM to i9003 will hardbrick da device.

This is a disaster. I tried to power it on to any mode there before i saw your post.
I needed to update the phone, because an app i needed for studying was only available on Android 4+.
Now no phone..
I saw a few threads, i hope after i leave it overnight i'll be able to power it.
If not, probably a JIG?
I don't fancy making one, but if i have to, i guess i'll give it a try. I don't think i could wait a week or more for a premade one to be delivered.
Anyway, for now, i'll keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks for help/tips and reply.
I'll post back tomorrow, hopefully with some better news.

Sorry to say, most likely you will need a USB JIg to fix the problem you have. :/
If you linked the correct page when you said you tried to do this- and if I opened the correct page, that takes you to an SII section. Those are SII firmwares, not for the S.
So as compacity said, please clarify what device you have... Whether its an I9000 (galaxysmtd is for the I9000) or an I9100 (the firmware page you linked). If you do have an I9000, then your brick comes from flashing a different device's rom onto the S, which would give this error in Odin beause its incompatible.
In this case, you'd probably need a USB Jig to come out of it.
Try what the others said and hopefully you'll be at least able to enter Download mode before resorting to a jig, but considering your situation, I have to say realistically a jig is your best bet :/

You need a usb jig. It will get you into download mode. Now you need to flash cf root, which will come with cwm recovery. Recovery mode should work now. If you get computer!phone, then re-flash cf root. Now you should be able to flash CyanogenMod via cwm recovery. Thank if I helped!

Both helped a lot, thanks.
I had to end up bringing the phone to a repair shop
Something i am not inclined to do if i can avoid it. Especially if i caused it, i would hope i could undo it. But because i need a jig, and i wouldn't have time to get one or make one before Monday, i had to bring it to someone else.
I am buying the materials for a jig, and maybe going to buy one also, for future.
@Soryuu - Yep, i linked to the page, so i must have flashed the wrong firmware.
I'm angry with myself because i read everything else carefully. I had been reading all day. I guess i was just tired and thought I had got to the final hurdle. I was careless.
@huskyT - Thanks, will know that for future reference. I have two old Android phones somewhere. One is a Galaxy Europa, and one is an LG (not sure what model). Both are borked in some way, but i could probably use them for practice. I think the Galaxy Europa is flashed badly. Not by me. (Thankfully).

Well....
I would have been quicker if i had ordered a jig and done it myself.. (Worth mentioning, i had told guy in phone shop what happened, and about the required "jig")
I collected my phone from the shop today, after a week, and i was told "Your phone is f*****d". To which i replied, "what? are you sure, i mean, i have only flashed it with SGS2 firmware, i'm under the impression it is very hard to break/brick, if i have a jig."
He told me, "Nope, it's beyond repair, it won't work. If you want, i can use the screen and other parts, i'll buy it off you for €40"
No thanks.
So now i am on the lookout for a premade jig. Does anybody know where i can buy one?
I meant to last week, but things happened, and without a phone i was running around a bit...
I'm going to check ebay, but if somebody could recommend somebody reliable, i'd prefer that. Thanks.
I bought it from ebay, no problem...but just saw a couple of minutes ago that also on amazon germany these jigs are offered now/in the meantime....

Thanks.
I bought a jig, and it arrived today. Have phone in charger.
Do i just plug the jig in?
Or do i also do the three button press?
The screen is completely black, and nothing appears on it.
only plug the jig in, thats all... phone will start in download mode of its own. :fingers-crossed: :fingers-crossed:

Thanks, going to leave it charging for a little longer, and try it.
If it doesn't work, would a motherboard for the Samsung Galaxy S be easy to replace? I have found one unlocked for €25.
EDIT
Found a tear down video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxPWsLd05F4
yes thats not so difficult...only thing a bit complicated is to open the back or middle cover...but there are a few movies on youtupe where you can see how it can be opened and dismounted....btw for the first try with the jig battery has not to be that full...only if it starts in download mode and you can flash it via odin I would recommend to charge it complete.

I am after removing it from the charger, and inserted the jig. It's in about 30 seconds now, and nothing is happening..
that sounds not good...ususaly it takes only a few seconds or perhaps a minute till it starts to download mode....sorry for no better news....

What seems to have happened, is i tried to flash it with SGS2 rom. So is it unbrickable?
I am not sure but I think that minimum the bootloader is damaged...there is one more possibility: to repair it via jtag...but for this you have to find someone, who ones one and can repair it....some of the guys don't take much money for such a repair, but with transport costs ets...perhaps it would be cheaper and faster if you take the new mainboard you mentioned.
