I have the xtralogic RDP app on my Xoom, and use it to dial into a spare Hyper-V box that I've built up and dedicated to just this task. The resolution and layout is set up for my Xoom specifically, and it's always running "over on the side". This setup works great with a few exceptions...
It puts a mouse on the screen, which allows me to drag my finger around anywhere on the screen itself to push this mouse cursor back and forth, and if I "click and hold" it brings up a right click menu. Generally this is a good thing, but I wish I could tweak it to act more like a Wacom tablet does... anywhere I push on the screen the cursor jumps to, so if I want to reach up and hit the X to close a window, I don't need to "scrub" over to that location with the cursor.
It's also a two step process (Menu > Android Keyboard) to bring up a keyboard.
Generally, it's really nice, and allows me to RDP into my box from anywhere on campus to check on things (I'm in IT). Does anyone have any idea how to emulate this kind of Wacom style touchpad functionality? As for the keyboard, I'm going to try enabling some tablet options (handwriting, and the onscreen keyboard below text entry fields), but without touch support it won't really work.

Can't agree more. +1
hmmm... I had thought it required a third party client be installed first, but i guess not. Shame I paid for xtralogic's client, meh...
after a bit of poking, it seems like the touch interface in wyse is what I'm after, but it's a shame I can't choose the resolution myself... it's either too big or too small. Xtralogic's I can manually specify 1280x750 (xoom screen minus the main bar at the bottom of the screen).
You can specify resolution, and pinch to zoom for the rest
I actually prefer xtralogic rdc to wyse. To each his own I guess. You can go into settings in xtralogic and turn off touchpad mode to get the behavior you want by the way.

Logmein...
Have you tried Logmein? I use it on my EVO 4G , Galaxy Tab and now my Xoom.
Edit xoom needs some work by dev.
Do any of the rdp clients allow for full screen mode? I haven't bought the paid version of xtralogic, the trial of wyse doesn't and I own Remote Rdp and I know that doesn't.

I have been happily using x2 client which is free. It has a mouse like you describe but you can make it jump to specific location and hide it.

Xtralogic allows you to set resolution manually, which is great for setting it to be 1280x750. This allows the windows desktop to take up "all of the screen above the xoom's own taskbar".

i think the main point with the xtralogic and wyse is that it doesn't require any forethought on your part... you can take over the native Windows remote desktop feature that's built into windows. VNC would require installing a client in advance.
This is probably fine if you're only taking over a single home machine, but there are likely to be about 20 servers in my list of bookmarks, and I don't want VNC installed on them.
Thanks for the advice. I just bought Xtralogic and so far it seems to be the best rdp client I've used. Much better then wyse and remote rdp.

It depends on the user as to which is better but I will list why I prefer xralogic:
1) the resolution of fit to screen works for me on xtralogic. On wyse it still pans a bit which annoys me.
2) I like to use the touch surface as a trackpad. It allows for more precise pointing in my opinion. I struggle on some apps to hit small targets with a touch to point interface.
3) xtralogic allows me to login to console. This is important since users seem to never remember to logoff rdc sessions.
4) finer control over security negotiation
5) ability to autotune based on connection type.
Other than that I have found xtralogic to be more performant and reliable than wyse but that is an anecdotal observation at best.
I go between wyse and android-vnc for my vnc needs but in all honesty am not fond of either for vnc. In fairness though I mostly use vnc to connect to console kvm instances and none of the vnc apps handle the lack of pointer well.

Does anyone know of an app that will use UK OS mapping ?
Ideally with a way to inject your current GPS position for accurate placement.
The OS do have an open map policy and there are a few iPhone apps that will access this... but cannot find any for Android so far.
ViewRanger on my 'old' Nokia N85 was very very good, but its currently not available for Android (fingers crossed though).
We do a lot of Geocaching and having access to an OS map helps with footpath placement and terrain... we hate to walk up very steep slopes if we don't have to nor over cliff edges
cheers
Thought i'd give this a bump as I would be interested in this also.
Imagine the 1:2500 1901 os maps on the thing too.You could overlay historical maps and stand at the door of your grandparents demolished house! Kewl!!
(I am such a geek)
Cool indeed
There are a few web based (for data) apps on the iPhone so I imagine its not tooo hard to build one, Multimap now have an OS layer so could be used to inject GPS location and pull up the correct map.
Andnav2 gives a choice of several map sources (diffent OS renderers, Google etc). Maps licensed with an AUP that permit caching can even be stored on the SD. TrekBuddy AtlasCreator can be used to create tilepacks for chosen areas.
Interesting app, but no Ordinance Survey support I'm afraid.
I also found RMaps which uses web based mapping from a variety of sources. Have commented on the Market that he look at the open source side of the Ordinance Survey for web based mapping apps...

Sorry that was me jumping the gun reading "OS" as OpenStreet
Anyhow, why not contact the developers of atlas creatorif you've got information about good free map-sources with an AUP that allows apps to store them locally.
edit: just noticed OS maps are far from free. Terms seem similar to many other national mapping agencies. I.e. only companies with deep pockets can afford the proper access to raw data required to make them useful.
Web based solutions can use the OpenSpace data <http://openspace.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/openspace/>
One would assume that an app could be built to look into this data ??
I'm building one at the moment that uses exactly this principle.
David... excellent
If you need a beta tester - let me know. OS mapping with GPS position would be very very cool.

The guy that does RMaps is also wanting to look into this. I emailed him and he mentioned it's on his list.
I'd happily pay for an app that gave access to OS maps....
I too would pay for an app that supported the GPS and compass in the Hero...
Kinda cool if it were like ViewRanger
Sneak Peak - OS Map Alpha 1
Well, I spent some time today getting to grips with Android development (trust me, C# for Win Mob is easier), and I've knocked together a working version of a GPS-linked Ordnance Survey app.

Right now all it does is show your position on an OS Map, and update it if you stray more than 30m from that location. It's more proof-of-concept than anything else. The biggest issue is that it's a resource hog, especially the Javascript, though I think that's cached. I'd like to have it installed locally, but the maps are tied to a domain name. ;-(
What are the things that you'd like to see in it? Compass support is coming soon!
Edit: Actually, it does seem to be caching fairly well, it's gone up to 3MB now.
Edit 2: Small update to use the whole window to shop the map, and to move the location.
YOU ARE A GOD !!
I never thought just asking a the question would lead to what I am seeing above. If thats where you live - nice area... and you may want to change the pic as it could be showing your home
Well... when you say caching, do you mean it caches the map tiles and then reuses them if you load up the app in the same location ? ie it does not re fetch the data ?
Features... well you asked
1. Compass (on its way you say)
2. Bookmarking - to allow easy return to an area you've saved.
3. POI's
4. Panning with the finger not just buttons (like Maps does)
5. Ability to load GPX's for geocaching - for location not necessarily for navigating to as GeoBeagle does this very well when combined with Radar.
6. Google Maps terrain overlay and satellite view overlay (with selectable opacity maybe)
7. Route tracing / breadcrumb laying for re-tracing your steps should you get lost in a forest, moor etc.
hmmm I seem to be suggesting all those things that ViewRanger has... that is a great app but buying map tiles for usually single use is expensive.
I would happily pay for an app though that does what you have so far.
Again... very happy to beta test
Cheers
that's marvellous David, thanks.
It looks great as is, but my one extra request would be to (optionally, perhaps) remove the cursor and zoom buttons, and be able to control it with swipe (to move) and pinch/spread to zoom.
thanks again
Looks great so far !
I looked at OS OPenSource and noticed that the api key you get is tied to one domain so wondered how you've got round this, if at all yet.
As for requests. Any way to tie in google/wikipedia searches to display their locations on this map. Handy for finding pubs/historical places on the map.
Keep up the good work.
Dylan
Wow - all I can say is "I WANT"!
Very nice looking - even better when you get compass sorted!
Whats the deal with Ordnance Survey anyways?

They are the best maps available of the UK.
Google Maps is great to a point, but only shows roads and the odd track.
OS maps show footpaths, field boundaries, historical points of interest and land marks, at some scales even the building outlines.
Take a look at how detailed they are

Recently some of the system dumps from the upcoming Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid hit the Developer community, and they have been trying to piece the puzzle together of what the Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid is all about. We got our hands on a new app which looks like it will be front and center when the device finally hits the shelves, Motorola Phone Portal.
Those that remember using the Motorola Phone Tools app to hack their Motorola’s back in the day (I’m getting all “Ahmad – Back in the Day” about my v600, v810, and RAZR) will instantly recognize this little gem, but it’s been updated for Android and provides some pretty cool functionality. Basically, Motorola Phone Tools (MPP) serves as an all-in-one phone manager that allows users to easily view, edit, create, delete, and play their contacts, ringtones, photos, wallpaper, and media. The key difference now is, the app is web-based and you log into your phone from directly from your browser! No installing “modems” and drivers on your Windows machine (painful), just fire up the app and press the “Connect with Wi-Fi button. When you press the button, the app prompts you to either turn on Wi-Fi, or connect over USB. For this experiment, I chose Wi-Fi.
MPP lets you add/edit/delete/browse your contacts, photos, bookmarks, browser history, and media in an easy-to-use interface. Playing media directly from the device in the browser worked very well, and the picture viewer/slideshow feature is pretty damn cool. So with MPP you’ll be able to play/show-off your media anywhere from any browser. If Moto adds a Social/Sharing aspect to this, they will have a winner on their hands.
So there you have it kids, a little taste of what’s to come with the Sholes/Tao/Droid. The original Moto Phone Tools was a pretty handy app (when it worked), and the new MPP looks to be just as functional, if not more so. I am sure it will help a lot of users manage their contacts/media/content when it gets released, and the ability to do slideshows and play media from your device directly from your browser is pretty slick. I hope Moto adds more features and functionality to it as time goes on, but this seems like a sign of good things to come. Grab the .apk file below and play away!

This is a cool little phone manager app that works really well with Hero and G1. It's an app that runs a webserver from your phone that you can access over Wifi from any browser on the same network.
It allows you to:
* view/add media on your phone
* view your call log
* read and send sms from the browser
* and more!
Works with any OS - anything with a browser should work. Only works over wifi with Hero, no USB connection is possible it seems.
I replaced as much Motorola branding as I could and replaced it with HTC stuff to make it a nicer experience for HTC fanboys
Download HTCportalv2:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/vpbxzo
Changelog
v2 - Changed more Moto references to HTC
Now if only this would let me control music playback.
Still, looks super, and nice to be able to manage over wi-fi instead of usb
You mean playback music on your pc from your phone? Hmm, I think it does allow that!
But I'm at work at the moment without wi-fi so can't confirm..
I think it lets you pull files, so you could listen on your pc, but I want to control my phone from my pc.
Basically, my stereo is the other side of my room from my desktop, and I'm lazy so if I could just play music from my pc, through the phone, into my amp, then I wouldn't have to get up
Also, I wonder if this means we can send files over wi-fi to web-enabled phones?
Have you tried it out yet? I can't give it another go until I'm home, but I thought that was possible. Look at the quote:
So with MPP you’ll be able to play/show-off your media anywhere from any browser.

You can certainly run a slideshow on your pc, from the photos on your phone. Pretty sure music is playable too. Give it a go
As for sending files, yes you can, but I think you might be restricted to media files.
How can I get it work with usb?
Not sure if that's possible, I was trying too. If you turn off wifi and try to connect it says it can connect over usb too, but I couldn't get it to connect. That might only work on a Motorola phone. Everything works over wifi though
That is awesome!!
This app is awesome!!!
Everyone should check it out!!!!
Nice work Pookie!
Cool, glad you like it!
I checked out the music thing, it lets you browse the music you have on your SD card, and you can click to play, but it plays the music on your phone instead of on the computer. That's what you wanted right Branwen?
Here's another screenshot:

I really can't think what could be causing it apart from some kind of issue with your network/ports/firewalls
For mine, at the initial setup it would not work at all when I clicked the start for wifi connection. It was only after I unplug my usb cable did it work...or I might had a huge lag.

im having the same issues in general with my hero: my laptop and the hero are connected to the same wifi network, both work fine, but they don't see each other. no ping, no ssh, no http no nothing. from my cable connected (to the wifi router) pc, everything works just splendid. i actually blame either my router (fritzbox, but some lowend version) or my laptop/ubuntu on my laptop for this behaviour, but i actually never investigated in that. whenever i want to connect from my laptop to my phone i hop via my pc, works fine.
It looks like quite a good contact manager also.
And yeah this is just what I wanted for music playback!

You can run Ubuntu on a rooted Galaxy Tab 10.1 and run a full Ubuntu desktop by connecting your bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
This is "chrooted" on top of your Android, meaning it runs like a virtual machine in the background, you can switch back and forth between Android and Ubuntu however you want.
When you turn your Tab 10.1 power off, you will have to restart Ubuntu though.
It's a bit laggy but not that much slower than my Atrix 4G webtop. I wouldn't use it for web browsing but the shell is very usable, you can install OpenSSH and other stuff you can play with.
Might be a fun mod for those of you running Ubuntu desktop already.
It runs pretty well on the Tegra I would say but the screen resolution is awesome!
My next goal is to put Wordpress blog running on the device, having trouble installing MySQL on the Ubuntu, if any Ubuntu experts out there, let me know if you figure out how to install MySQL, that's the only thing holding me back.
Can't wait until next year when 2Ghz dual-core tablets hit, then it will run really, really fast.
Here's a video preview:

I am gonna try to optimize it a bit over the next couple days and see if I can make it run faster/better.

It works, but do u know if there is a way to get the correct resolution so that the HC menu bar doesn't interrupt Ubuntu?
EDIT: Also, is there a way to shut it down other than rebooting the tablet?
I think if you set 1280x800 to something like 1280x760 that might fix it, the problem is that the Android status bar takes up 40-50 pixels at the bottom, I will try that and let you know.
I haven't tried this yet but video looks great and you were saying it runs on top of android so does android eat up some ram/cpu? if so think it would be possible just boot it as an os instead of like a vm for better performance? xbmc isnt based on ubuntu, originally it was an xbox app that transformed into something greater
i think ill try this out if you can get the latest verison of ubuntu to work on the tab. amazing work so far looks awesome
I loaded up my natty image and it seems to work. However, I'm having trouble with text entry. It defaults to LXDE so that might have something to do with it.. anyone know how I can change it back to gnome or unity? normally, you can choose which environment you want at the login screen but I can't log out so that's not going to work.
also, has anyone else noticed that, when rebooting the tablet, the startup sound plays 5-10 seconds later after installing ubuntu?
Ha, this is awesome. I do have an issue with it though, it doesn't seem to want to start a second time.
I rebooted the tablet/ubuntu to apply the keyboard fix at the end of the article, but now I can't connect with the VNC. I get the proper responses through ADB/command prompt, but my VNC viewer fails to connect, giving a connection refused error.
Edit:
Nevermind, we're all good. Something wasn't clearing properly on shutdown. It's taken care of.
How do I uninstall this? Do i just delete it from the Sdcard or is there another step that's required?
Hi all,
I'm going to start hacking on the ChromeCast... to boot or run a tiny Linux distro, and also to run homebrew apps without the necessity of the whitelisting process, etc. I'll be keeping a log of my work at chromecastdev.com. Collaboration is welcome.
The first thing I'm going to play with is trying to dump the bootloader (resides in the little NAND on the Marvell SOC?).

I wish you luck in your conquest!
Hopefully developers on this forum can do some cool stuff with Chromecast!
Port it to Raspberry Pi. *fingers crossed*
Wait, it's an enclosed system, how do you plan to snoop it?
Ethernet over HDMI or the USB port could provide a path. Also there is a header inside it looks like that isn't listed as a spec so it could be a serial/JTAG point. High hopes for this getting hacked and running an XBMC or Plex client, although I guess Plex web might be fine.

I don't know if you've already found it, but there are various source files available here. Bootloader sources are in the "sdk" repo. A cursory glance at them makes it seem like you can boot from a USB device by holding down the button on boot, but the image needs to be signed by Google.
any chance you can take some high-res photos of the pcb? The marvell chip isn't listed on the marvell website yet, would be great if we could find a block diagram.

Yeah, the source doesn't seem to be in a buildable state. I was thinking there might be something like an Android repo manifest.xml to bring all those git repos together into one source tree, but I couldn't find anything like that. Also, like you said, there are lots of missing files referenced in the build scripts.
I found the link to the source after downloading the Chromecast app (my device hasn't arrived yet) and letting it scan and fail to find anything. It directed me here, which has the Google Code link in the "What's Under the Hood?" entry.
The other interesting documentation I found is here, specifically the part about pressing "Apps" seven times to enable developer mode (very reminiscent of dev mode on new Android versions). It's unclear whether that just exposes additional info in the desktop app or actually sends a packet to the Chromecast to enable some sort of on-device dev mode.
Once I get mine, the first thing I want to do is get a full packet capture of the setup and update process, and some sample network traffic generated by normal use.

I will run more scans but I thought I would point out that it appears to be running a web server on two ports 8008 & 9080. One of which is listed as Mongoose.
I am too new to post links so I removed all outside URLs. Mongoose can be found on Google Code.

The only thing that works for me is starting a youtube video from the Android youtube app.
No controls yet, it is not implemented.
Tab casting from Chrome spawns an empty chrome window.
Other Chromecast apps (Play Music) do not detect leapcast yet, or more precisely detects it but do not show the cast button.

We may want to keep any eye on this project too.

Hi,
As an owner of NGT I've decided to start programming in java and android API. Let me introduce my first project.
As I rooted my device I was missing Library launcher, ralaunch was fine but I was looking for shelves supporting launcher, epub launcher was nice but limited. So, I decided to fill the gap. I was inspired by nook library, which I think was very well designed.
For now it's in alpha stage and for easier developing it's as application, in future I'll make it as a launcher.
So, here are the screen-shots of actual developing state:

I'm using Calibre and its meta attributes:
<meta content="shelf name" name="calibre:series"/>
<meta content="1" name="calibre:series_index"/>
calibre:series_index is treated as integer, not as a float so if you have it as float, let me know.
Please let me know what you think about it. Let me know which features or ideas you wished to have in this app.
If anybody could contribute pictograms icons which will fit better, let me know.
---- uploaded first pre-alpha version of app ---
v0.1 - limitations:
scanning of ebooks is limited only to whole /sdcard/, no internal memory is scanned,
file browser don't remember locations, always start from root,
file browser don't have a bookmarks yet,
epub file's attribute "calibre:series" is treated as integer value, so 1.5 is 2, 1.4 is 1. Anybody uses fractions on this attribute?
sorting is done on re-run of app or on refreshing library, to be fixed,
for now, only epub filetype is handled,
searching doesn't work,
no preferences yet
v0.2
fixed adding of shelves
fixed scanning of whole /sdcard/
v0.3
added working bookmarks
added root access in manifest (in future will be used in "my file" browser to get access to blocked paths)
some general fixes
Let me know what you think about it.
Cheers

Yes yes yes! THIS IS GOOD!
I've uploaded first version of my app. Hope that'll work for you.
Nice app, thanx!

Looks great - thanks! For future versions, I'd love to be able to do a dual-sort starting with genre tag so you could show shelves by tag then by series (so you could just see your SciFi series for example) or tag then by author etc. Thanks for the good work.
Hi,
New version uploaded, more info in first post.
Due to some manifest changes in code which fail to run I must upload again to have it working
Cheers.
I'm extremely impressed, especially considering that you said you have just started programming. Very good start sir!:beer:

Thanks, I've learned C/++ for years, so learning Java was quite easy. The biggest problem was Android API, which is complex, especially API 7 which lacks many features.
Good work! I like the way this library app opens AlReader by default and allows the standard Nook library to open the stock reader by default. I have one feature request. As many of the third party readers will open .mobi files as well as .epub, can this library be modified to use both? My practice is to have my non-DRM books in .mobi format to open with AlReader so that they do not even show up in the stock library app which I use for B&N content only. I find this a effective way to separate the two different forms of content.

Hi, I plan to add mobi/pdf/epub only the question is how to handle this, altogether or separate in tabs.
Beside I'll add scan paths. So, for mobi we could set one dir and exclude it from scanning.

Actually, for my purposes, there is no need to separate .epub and .mobi. Your app will not be able to read B/N DRMed epubs anyway. For me, if it just picked up .mobi files when it does a library scan and displayed then alongside DRM free epubs, that would be fine.
Again, thanks for the great work on this.

I really like the app, but it can't seem to get it to work properly. I only get three or four shelves to start and I can set the view to all to see all my ebook files. This view shows all of the books but without an authors name, shows null null. Hitting the refresh button the app rescans the device and shows all the authors on the books. Switching the view to shelves does not carry over, hitting the refresh button does not change the shelves shown. Going throughout the option menu to delete data and then rescan does nothing as well. Any ideas? Can post the debug if needed
Also for future dev adding the file types cbr/Cbz for comic books would be awesome. Showing them inline with other shelves or on a separate tab would be cool
Hi
I was oo for a while. Could you PM me debug, I'll look for it. Strenge, as ebook should be readed all the time the same way.
sorry about the two seperate pms but the first is what it normally looks like and the second is when i rescan files in the all files view.
Feature request. Sync with google play books or any other service that have upload and page sync. I want to be able to upload books on my phone and sync over to nook.
Hi, I'll look how that could be achieved. I had a plan to make my own build of reader with sources and add reading with last page shown in library app.

This app is exactly what I have been looking for. However, I installed it on my NST and have similar issues as above. Also when I try to assign books to a shelf it will add some but not all that I have selected and will add some random books as well.
I hope the developer keeps working on this app.
