I rooted my phone (I think) using I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe (I think). Looking at the phone with SUPER MANAGER the ENABLE ROOT function is NOT checked off. Does that mean my phone is not rooted? Is there another way of telling if my phone is rooted? I read somewhere that you need an unrooted phone in order to get the AT&T froyo 2.2 which hopefully will be released any day now. If I need the phone unrooted to get the update is there an easy way to unroot it that will not wipe out my programs and data?
Thanks for any help.

OK. I probably did not run that program. But how can I tell if a phone is rooted or not? And is it true that your phone has to be unrooted in order to update to 2.2? thanks

Ummmmm did you or didn't you run that program while in download mode? If you are unsure about that then I suggest you stop trying to mod your phone for a while and do some reading.
As far as being unrooted, no one knows. But I can tell you I plain don't care about an official release from att. I will continue to use roms that are developed by folks around here. they are better than anything that att can put out.

Pirate, I have been a member here for a long time, & been doing a lot of reading since I got this phone. I have never seen so many people get bricked and that scares me. I tried to root the phone just in order to make backups....I am a backup freek and for good reason. My last phone was the DASH 3G (still have it). I got the HTC Windows phone but only kept it a couple of weeks before realizing how far it has to go. The Captivate is definitely a lot better than anything i have ever had and it does not seem necessary to flash it in order to get all the nice apps running. I will be happy with the AT&T update if it ever appears. I have spent the past few weeks customizing the Captivate and will post my homescreen and a list of apps I am using.

Do you have the SuperUser App in your APP drawer? If so you are rooted.
super user
I have SUPERUSER PERMISSIONS.....some of the apps listed inside it are:
titanium backup
rom manager

So do I need to UNROOT in order to get the AT&T update to 2.2?
Just odin one click and master clear.. then hook up to kies...

Is there a way to unroot that will not erase all of my work?
How did you know its coming any day now.
first of all, 2.2 is not coming soon....
second of all, you ARE rooted
third of all, doesn't matter if you "unroot" (although you dont really seem to be a candidate for rooting anyway)...because once you're rooted or once you change the existing software (which you did with the program you listed in the first post between the "i thinks"), you negate the ability to recieve over-the-air updates from at&t
not that ANY of this matters, because the second those firmwares hit at&t phones it will be here and available to flash
not to mention we already have 2.2 available unrooted (the leaked version (might be different))
if you want me to send you the one-click ODIN file to flash stock 2.2 let me know
So it's a confirmed fact that rooted phones can't get the OTA updates?
nope only that some people have reports that they have not been able to update after they try and use atts update....

Thanks for your offer! I would love 2.2. Someone on this board said he works for AT&T said the update was coming on the 19th....guess not ))
I need to ask a few questions about applying the update:
1. Does my home screen get reset?
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
4. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?
thanks whitesox....I'll be keeping a eye on this thread.
Sorry Whitesox - I'm REALLY REALLY BORED at work today - hence all the forum spamming today
I need to ask a few questions about applying the update:
1. Does my home screen get reset?
Yes
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
Unless you had them backed up somehow (say using Titanium Backup) - then yes.
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
Possibly - but if your using a Custom ROM? I've found that only those I have purchased show up under the Market and I had to hunt them all down again.
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
Not necessarily true - for Apps/Data you should be fine restoring. But I wouldn't recommend restoring any type of System Data as it would conflict with the update.
5. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?
As in? Froyo specs means you will have additional functionality - the biggest one is Flash for websites. That and you will be able to run more applications from the Market vs. your current Eclair 2.1 ROM.

Thanks for the response. I have titanium backup, as well as SUPER MANAGER which also does backups. Also have ROm MANAGER but I am sure that will not apply....As for my installed apps & widgets I have a list of everything installed. Looking forward to 2.2 and FLASH 10 WHITESOX!
The official Froyo update has been coming "any day now" since September.
Just personal preference to run Titanium Backup - I know it works and I can use the free version to do everything I want or need.
Yea - I had forecasted we would see the Froyo OTA update from ATT with Source before Christmas - It does appear we won't see this update until sometime in 2011 - like um never?
At this point your stuck with either the OTA JH7 Update 2.1 Eclair - or you can get the Leaked Froyo (not recommended stock) or your plethora of Custom ROM's in the Dev forum.
I swear I think the Captivate has more custom roms then a room full of bunnies. I look at the other Galaxy S line and I see a few - but not as many to choose from here. This is the one major plus of owning a Captivate I guess
which one to get?
OK you and whitesox seem to know what you are doing. What is the best & most stable version to get?

Pretty new to modding. Right now i've got a Canadian Telus Milestone on US AT&T and i guess i just need some clarification on a few things. I've flashed my phone with the G.O.T 2.2.1 SBF file. I'm also rooted. i also understand that you can apply different themes to whatever SBF your running.
But heres where i get a bit confused. is G.O.T 2.2.1 the only Froyo SBF we can flash to our milestones? if not what makes one better than the other? if so then what are Cyanogen 6.1/froyomod/ and motofrenzy? are these custom Roms people install on top of G.O.T? and for someone like myself who just wants to run plain old Android 2.2 with no fancy themes do i even need to install a "mod" to my G.O.T 2.2.1 flash? sorry if my questions are all over the place, just trying to learn as much as i can. Thanks

Ok...So lets clarify things up:
GOT has leaked the kernel for froyo for our milestone along with the buggy release of motorola froyo
basically GOT = new buggy kernel + new buggy motorolla froyo...
Here is where the magic starts:
Guys like kabaldan(very special thanks to him for bringing CM6 to us), dexter, feeyo, ho-no, and others have taken that GOT leak and started to work to remove almost all the bugs and bring to us their beautiful roms...
For example if you come from 2.1 to latest CM6 version you dont need to flash the buggy leak from got and then apply CM6
You can just apply CM6 from Open Recovery because CM6 contains the kernel too and it is very optimized as far as I know...
I recommend you CM6 because this is the one that I'm using...but the other 2.2 ROMS are great too... It's your choice
Hope I answered your questions!
do i need to remove G.O.T first? or do i install CM6 over it using open recovery? also is CM6 an SBF file?

You dont need to remove GOT
You should (not necessarily, but I recommend) wipe data, cache, dalvik cache from Open Recovery and then:
1. Download CM6 http://cyanogenmod4milestone.google...-0.04-10.12.08b-cm-6.1.0-Milestone-signed.zip
That is the one I'm using
2. Copy it to Open Recovery's folder in updates
3. Also download google apps as you need to install that too
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version#Google_Apps
4. Copy this too to Open Recovery's folder in updates
5. I recommend doing a nandroid backup first
6. Dont forget about wipe data, cache, dalvik
6. Go to Open Recovery and apply CM6 update first then apply google apps update
7. You should be good to go now.
Hope this helps!
Great thanks! will give it a shot when i get home from work. last question i swear! since i'm on US At&T i thought i read somewhere that i'll need to replace some files to keep my 3G. was that pertaining to this or something else?

I'm not quite sure...I never had this issue....
You should check to see if it works without replacing anything
If it doesnt...Then I think you should install "radio files" for your region...Check for more details the CM6 thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784750
"Non European radio files can be installed from menu in Androidiani OR."
It clearly specifies that radio files can be installed in Open Recovery...
Check the thread...I'm 100% sure you will find your answer there, only if it doesnt work without installing anything...
I must go to sleep now...but I'll check back with this thread tomorrow to see how is your progress...
Let me know if anything...I will gladly help if I have the time!
Hi. Like you I am running a Trousers Milestone on Art. You don't have to flash anything 3G related. You do need to change some GPS settings. Change them from Remus to Googles GPS, otherwise your gps lock takes forever. Here are the directions I used to resolve my GPS lock issue, if you happen to have a similar problem. Look on page 2.

I have removed the file links from the OP to stop any confusion in the future. All files can be found in the other thread where it will be maintained and updated (if necessary) in the future.
Thanks for reading.
UPDATE: 27/11/11
Andrew_Low has provided a copy of his stock FROYO backup, which I tested on my tab and confirm that it is working. The kernel is rooted, other than that it is a clean ROGERS rom.
He was also able to capture the GINGERBREAD update, (which I have not tested as of yet, any testers please post your results) this is the stock update available from KIES.
Many thanks to him for this, if it helps you, hit his thank you button[/URL]. If you find this thread helpful as well, hit my thank you button.
Instructions on flashing are not provided. If you need these files it means you know how to flash your device, have flashed a custom ROM previously, and require this to return to a stock state.

Not an easy ROM to find is it?
Anybody ?
Any fresh ROGERS tabs out there???
I just picked up a used Galaxy Tab that has this firmware on it. I'm not new to hacking Android devices, but the Tab is new to me.
I haven't installed Kies yet, but will in a couple of days and can make a backup.
That would be just great, thank you very much, and I assure you that you will be glad that you made a backup for yourself as well in the future (hopefully not though, I don't expect you to have problems or anything like that but you know what I mean).
If possible, can you make the backup before you root the device, otherwise it seems to be a bit of a headache trying to get it un-rooted after the fact.
Many thanks.
EDIT: I guess i'm thinking more of a temp root than a perm root before backup
Sigh, I'm in noobville here with Kies.
Cross booted to Windows XP (I normally use Linux as my desktop) - installed Kies and sorted out USB connectivity.
I don't see where in Kies I can do a firmware backup. The backup just grabs the user data from the device.
It detects my firmware version and offers me the chance to update (which I assume would be a bad idea). Quickly looking on the net, you can 'capture' the firmware files during an update - but that doesn't help grab the version I'm running. Seems there may be a registry hack that lets you install older versions in Kies? If that's true, why can't anyone with a Rogers tab just get the old firmware easily?
Looking for a bit of hand holding.
Oh yeah, and device is bone stock. I'll likely root, unlock and install CyanogenMod - but I'm in no rush. Happy to try to help capture the stock ROM. It may help me out in the future, you never know.
Search for Roto-backup, it is a way to back it up bit by bit. It's a thread by Rotohammer, using his technique members were able to provide UN-ROOTED firmware, which are posted in the dev section. Have a little read see what you think.
The Roto-backup link was helpful, but that requires rooting.
Here's what I've done. Starting with a bone stock, factory reset device. I rooted the device using SuperOneClick 2.2. Sadly I had to run this under Windows to get it to work, mono + Ubuntu didn't seem to work out
I used the default "auto" method of rooting with SuperOneClick, and I did install busybox. In theory - if you really wanted to have an un-rooted stock, you could use the Unroot option of SuperOneClick.
Then I used the roto-backup script. This seems to have worked and I've got a 250MB zip file that I believe contains the stock firmware.
Are you brave enough to test it?
Files were zipped into a single file then split into chunks using RAR to get around upload limits. Grab them from skydrive.
Nice. I have a backup I came across but it's screwy and can't be un-rooted. The root method you used was temporary or perm?, the difference would be one disappears after a reboot.
When I originaly did my backup I used a temp root and came up with a file that I'm pretty sure was about the same size.
Brave you ask? I'm downloading the 3 RARs right now and will check it out.
Many thanks, will flash and tell you how it goes.
Well, Andrew_Low, it worked like a charm. The flash went smooth I will attempt to un-root shortly, and tell you how it went.
Glad it worked. Let me know if unroot via SuperOnClick 2.2 goes ok.
Why do you want non root? Warranty claim?
Slightly off topic, what ROM would you recommend? Seems any AT&T compatible ROM should play ok on the Rogers tab. I'm partial to CM being that's what is on my phone.

It is for warranty reasons, I have two tabs one was acting up. I did re stock it and sent it back but I wasn't able to un-root so I'll see if it goes through with samsung.
I HAD my stock rom that I somehow deleted (or just misplaced, cause I can't find it anywhere) Then I figured that I am not the only one who may need this, and since it is harder to find, I thought that I would try and help out the P1000R folks by getting a stock rogers rom for those who would like to revert. I was going to wait until I receive my tab back and see what they did to it and maybe have a fresh rogers rom on it to backup. I plan on posting it for members to have.
Our Rogers tabs are great for flashing anything on it really (p1000 related of course). Currently I have BOCA on mine, I had HC RC1 on it previously for a good little bit, and was going to put the ICS alpha build on it, but now since I'm left with one I use it for business purposes and require full functionality out of it. The tab that I sent back had OVERCOME KRATOS on it. Funny enough, this tab is the one that i'm always flashing different roms on and overclocking and plain old abusing it yet it was the other one that crapped out.
I recommend the OVERCOME rom as it is very stable, fast and reliable with almost no bugs. Combined with the bell modem it could also be used for phone calls if necessary. But experiment with any one you want until you find one that suits your needs, I found both my tabs hard to brick so I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. I can't wait for an ICS beta rom to stick on this one.
Cool. I'm interested in a clean stock ROM if one shows up, please post to this thread. I'll try the unroot and see if that works for me.
Open to pointers on how to soft root and capture ROM. Seems feasible, but I didn't find a way to soft root and give me enough to roto backup.

Can't folk use the 2.3 firmware from kies? I haven't tried, but if you flash the rooted UXJJ6 from this thread then use Kies to upgrade to 2.3 you'd be in an unrooted stock state.

Hmm, very interesting. I ran the unroot on my device and it did manage to remove the superuser apk, but beyond that the device appears to still be rooted - busybox is still installed, and when I shell in over adb I get the # indicating root access.
I suspect just removing the superuser app is enough to make it appear 'as stock' - but any expert digging into the device and it's easy to see things are not stock.
If I were to try again - seems zergRush may be the local root you want to use, then from there figure out how to backup the ROM.
[edit] Ooh... reboot and adb has lost the # - I still see busybox installed in /system/xbin/busybox - I suspect this is pretty close to 'stock' if I punt the /system/xbin stuff entirely.
I'm not sure I'm that motivated to chase this further - I can't guarantee it is 100% stock, and it's the same as dl'ing the files I previously uploaded and running SuperOneClick 2.2 unroot + removing the busybox stuff as I specified above. The only mystery here is really what causes adb to have root privs when rooted.
Sweet - appears I was able to grab the ROM from Kies during the 2.3 upgrade - so I've got a copy of the clean/stock Rogers GINGERBREAD.UXKG1 firmware.
Will upload and link here in the next couple of days.
Very sweet, I will post it in the OP for reference.

+1 to theREDlegion for cleaning this stuff up and making the thread useful.
so i have been hearing some great things on the bionic data fixes with the .901 update i have read the original op but honestly i am a bit confused hoping someone can help me out here... someone says it does not void warrenty by going to that one how is that possible if root is required to do this??? so how would i go about getting this updated .. i previously came from a charge and before that a epic so odin was my best friend and everything was very simple as far as rooting flashing roms and if i messed it up odin was there to help me out so hoping someone will help me in the right directinon and i am up to date on the most recent update the "data fix" if that is what you want to call it!!!
.901 was pushed as an OTA to a limited number of people. Someone copied it and uploaded it to the board. Meaning Big Red and Moto have to support it since it was pushed out, even though it was an accident. I'm not sure if you have to be rooted to sideload it or not. I was already rooted. Turned my phone into everything it was originally supposed to be. No data drops, and a constant 4G signal for me. It almost doubled my battery since it doesn't waste power searching for 4G.
OK cool I wish I could find a way to get it without root don't want to root yet

So I got fed up with the phone as it was and updated it to the info above. I have never done this before and just did it following the info instructions on droidhive. Didnt do anything more than back up contacts and downloaded the ICS leak and installed it with out bootstrap this or bootloader that or anything. Probably did more than I should have as I dont undertand anything about rooting or ROMS or anything else.
Now my understanding from reading here is when and if Verizon does a OTA upgrade I will not either 1) recieve notification nor 2) be able to download it is that correct? I also cannot go back to my old build since I didnt , insert magic special thing I should have downloaded or installed prior to me updating, is that correct also? Can I do further upgrades that I have been reading about on this forum as written and in theory if I follow the instructions should be ok? or do I need to go back to the old build (if possible) then work my way back up?
I probably should have left well enough alone but I was getting so pissed with my phone and I tell you since I upgraded to that leak it runs very nice with a few hiccups when I try and run different apps. Figure if I screw it up too bad I can always get the Samsung Siii...and not mess with it...thanks for entertaining this newb!!
Take a look at this thread. It shows how to get back to .905, or to go to newer versions without losing your data. As of right now, I suggest going with the .232 leak, which is the latest you can go to while still being able to return your phone to gingerbread.

I agree.. if you are running 223 right now.. i would stick with it till the ota. You might not recieve notification but either way, you will be able to dl the image and load it the same was as you did with 223. seeing as how it will be signed it shouldn't be a problem. I have been running 223 for a few days now and overall i'm very happy with it. i just wish that i could turn the 4g off sometimes because it's a beast on the battery in my area..
I'm Loving the .223 update. It has made my Bionic into the phone Verizon should have provided me from day one!!! It isn't perfect, but it is darn good, miles, yards, acres, even years ahead of Gingerbread.

Guys still running above on the phone but have read of some upgrade/ROMs that I'd like to do, but it says I need to be rooted and I never rooted even when I did the upgrade shown above. Everything Im reading on how to root is assuming Im on the stock GB does it matter that Im not on GB and I still can do it on ICS the same way? Please advise on steps to root it now so I can continue upgrading and installing ROMS...thanks!
