[Q] computer wont recognize phone anymore - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone- I think I broke my phone, but any suggestions would be appreciated. I had cog3 and wanted to upgrade to cog4. I started by disabling voodoo lagfix, but it hung up there for about an hour. I powdered down and now nothing works. I see a screen with a phone and computer and an exclamation poit. I am able to get to d/l mode, but odin doesn't recognize it. Tried reinstalling usb drivers, but windows thin ks im plugging in a gadget serial, whatever that is. Not sure where to go from here. Thanks again for any help

usb debugging
I can't turn the phone on to do that. I can't believe I forgot to turn usb debugging on before I started! Is there a way to turn it on without being able to turn the phone on?

Might want to try a couple of other USB ports on the computer. I know that it does not see my phone unless I plug it into a port on the back of the computer.

Tried different usb ports, even different computers, no luck. I failed to mention that I used an i9000 kernel. Do I need the i9000usb drivers?

Just an update : had to uninstall mini kies, reinstall, load the drivers per the ofgicial froyo upgrade instructions, then odin finally saw the phone and I was able to flash back to stock.

Big problem. Suddenly my phone will not turn on. Sits at the white Galaxy S GT-I9000 screen and does not boot. When I put it into download mode and plug it into computer, its suddenly saying "USB Device Not Recognized".
What do I do? PC won't recognize it, it wont boot. can't flash it.....I'm freaking out here...
Did you flash anything to it or root it?

Hi Rick. Try to re-install samsung usb drivers. during this time, take out the battery from the phone. once finished installing the drivers, put back the battery into the phone. Go into downloading mode. Fire up odin, put in the necessary firmwares + pit files. Once done, then CONNECT your phone to the usb port of your computer.
Hope it's okay.
Edit: Let's hope that it is the computer usb drivers are corrupted. Alterntively, if you still can't do it, try it on another pc.
Nope. I was rebooting it to flash XXJPC to it, but couldnt do so because it was saying that USB message and wouldnt detect it. So I went into recovery, did a factory reset, and now it wont boot.
Another computer does the same thing *tears*
*BUMP*
Lets try a different route. I will pay a generous sum of money to anyone who offers to and does manage to fix this for me?
rick, looking at this, if your usb is not recognised, it is either the pc or the phone usb port might be damaged.
if it is a hardware issue, then use the bounty to get it fix.
I was at that same point with my vibrant. After failed attempts of getting into download mode using buttons, here's what I did.
Download and install samsung usb drivers and android sdk.
Plug into the computer and use adb to get into download mode (adb reboot download).
Then flash with odin.
Doing that worked for me when nothing else would. Try it ?

I can get into download mode just fine.....my pc just doesnt recognize the usb device. tried 3 differente pc's, 2 running win7 and one running xp.
Did you install usb drivers on each of the machines?

I installed the samsung USB driver executable. and I also tried to use those drivers that it installs to manually update the "unknown USB device" in device manager, but they won't take.
Try uninstalling all drivers, then stick a MicroSD in your phone before plugging it into the usb.
Assuming you have Samsung Kies in your PC, try to upgrade it at 1.5.1.10074_45.
How long do you wait the boot?? The first boot after flash is very long, wait at least 5 minutes with flashing "S".
I did not just flash anything. My phone got really hot and laggy (as I was using it while charging it via USB port) and so I rebooted phone in an attempt to resolve the lag. when I did, it would not go past the WHITE Samsung Galaxy S I9000 screen, does not get to the flashing S screen.

if i understood you correctly, you have two separate problems:
a) your phone does not boot up
b) your phone is not recognized by any computer when plugged in
could be a coincidence, but probably is not. i'm guessing your bootloader got screwed up somehow. if it is a coincidence, it could be that your usb port on the phone is effed, or your usb cable is dead. try first using a different cable and see if your phone can be recognized by any computer. perhaps then you can go into download mode and reflash.
also, have a look at this post, might help you (although, if your usb is effed, there's not much point in trying any solution that involves your phone being connected to a computer): http://androidforums.com/780720-post3.html
EDIT: also, have your tried the obvious stuff, like pulling battery?
I ve seen many threads with the white screen problem ... it has in most cases been the drivers ... you desinstall all drivers from pc using Kies option for resinstall the drivers ... then you pull the battery off few sec (give it a min or two) then you get to download mode and you flash the beast ... dont connect your phone before launching odin or else it will not be recognized ...
for the few other people who didn't manage to fix it ... it was a hardware failure
That post you linked, is worth a try. But its for a motorola.....Where do I get my SGS bootloader to use instead?
ohh you were implying to try to use the motorola usb drivers?

I never said anything about a white screen. and I am not uneducated on flashing SGS, or using Odin. Far from it. My phone was first showing USB symbol when it wasnt plugged into USB port, then phone started running really hot while charging and got really bloated like it was overheating. So I rebooted and its now force closing at the first boot animation. I can get into download mode and recovery, but will not recognize in any of the 3 computers all running different versions of windows on them, with either of my USB cables that I tried.

[Q] Windows No Longer Recognizes Captivate

Hello all, I am turning to the Forums since I have spent 5 hours trying to resolve my problem.
Earlier today I installed Kies Mini on my computer in anticipation of the official AT&T Froyo. However, now my computer no longer recognizes my phone at all. It does not show up in the Device Manager, or anywhere.
I tried Uninstalling Kies Mini, Uninstalling the Drivers, Rebooting my phone. etc, etc. But Windows still will not recognize the phone as attached. It worked in the past and I would like for it to work again.
I am currently running Windows 7 64 bit. My Captivate is running Cog 3.4.
Try this:
Uninstall Kies Mini and all Drivers
Reinstall Kies Mini
Once installed turn on USB debugging on your phone and then plug it in, let it install all of the drivers.
Unplug your phone and shut it down
Once shut down activate download mode (hold up and down volume and plug in the USB) again it will install more drivers.
Once this is done unplug your phone, remove the battery and turn it back on, then restart your computer.
Uninstalled Kies Mini, and Samsung Drivers. Reboot
Installed Kies Mini.
Attached Phone to Computer. Nothing.
Also, Tried to Just boot my phone into Recovery Mode. But only boots into Clockwork Recovery. Can't Log into Stock Recovery
Update: Tried hooking up the phone to my XP machine. No Joy. XP did not recognize the device or try to install drivers.
Did you enable debugging?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes, I placed it in Debug mode. When I plug in my Phone my Title Bar Shows the USB Debugging Android indicating that USB Debugging connected, the USB icon that says Copy files to From Computer. If I click on USB, it gives me the Green Connect Android, then the Orange One. But none of my computers recognize a USB device as connected.
I have tried it with Three different cables. I'm thinking that somehow the phone is not sending some message to Windows saying "Hey, I'm connected"
Did you use the correct drivers for the phone? Can't recall of the top of my head if I can use the standard captivate drivers for windows if your on cognition..

Not in device manager
I have what appears to be a soft brick. I was running the i9000 drivers. I was trying to install the i897. At first Odin recognized my phone and I began to download. The Odin bootloader flash failed. No my computer (Win 7 64 bit) does not even see my phone. Nothing in device manager, not even an unrecognized device.
I can get my phone into download mode. Does anyone have an idea how I can get windows to see me again?
From my experience as long as you are in download mode and have odin opened up it when you connect it, odin should find the phone no problem for you to be able to flash something new to it.

Have you rebooted the PC? Try to reinstall the drivers again. I had to reinstall the nexus s drivers but I have read some need to reinstall kies to get the drivers to work. Just keep at it. Try other USB ports. My phone wouldn't be recognized for about two weeks with trying everything. I tried new USB cables, drivers and all. Then finally it kind of worked and I went from download mode with a jig to phone!PC and then it took another reboot of the laptop and phone was able to get flashed again via the phone!PC screen. Just keep trying is all I can say.

[Q] SGS doesn't recognizing by USB

3 days ago i flashed my sgs with Ultibread v1.3
Today i decided to flash back 2.2.1 firmware, but all of my 3 computers (10 usb ports) couldn't recognize my phone.
Try to search any solve of this problem, but no one tutorial has not helped.
What did i do?
uninstall all of samsung usb drivers
clean register of all garbage with "samsung"
reboot my computer 3 times
download latest samsung usb drivers v1.3.2000.0 (25.jan.2011)
get out battery for 15 minutes
try plug in other usb port
take computer, wich never connected my phone, install latest drivers (see previous step) and connect sgs to him...
In all cases, the result is one: Unknown USB Device.
System can load and "debug mode" switched on.
Please, help me...
My PC forgets my SGS on a regular basis. When I plug the USB into my phone it is usually a good 50/50 if it recognizes it.
I have found the best way to deal with it is to reboot the phone while it is still connected by USB to the PC. When the phone comes back up with the USB connected, the PC always discovers it right away.
Also avoid connected through a USB hub if possible, that always gives me trouble.
Omg! Solved.
Ultibread v1.3 and, maybe, 1.4 got issue with check in debug usb mode.
And without this check - windows can't recognize phone.
Solution:
turn on debug usb mode in settings, then put out battery when phone is ON.
Then you can get in download mode.
Case closed

I want to update via Kies, but can not connect

I have a Bell SGS. I updated it once from 2.1 to 2.2...now I'd like to update to 2.3.
My computer/Kies will NOT see my phone. I've done some searching, but I literally have no idea what I'm doing. I've done a factory reset on my phone hoping that would help...it didn't. I've re-installed Kies...no dice. Tried re-installing the drivers via Kies...nothing.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Someone willing to help me step by step via e-mail would be even better.
60+ views and not a single suggestion?
I don't understand why my PC can't see my phone AT ALL.
Honestly, your best bet is to use Odin and flash the Bell UGKG3 (2.3.3) build.
You can download Odin and the Bell UGKG3 build here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881&page=1
Search for i9000m (that's what the Bell SGS is) and you'll find the UGKG3 download.
Instructions for using Odin are also on that same page.
Last time my phone was not recognized it was a broken USB cable
If your update from 2.1 to 2.2 was an unofficial update, keis will not see the phone again, unless you flash back to the official 2.1.
Once you have done that, Keis should then recognise your phone and offer you the latest Bell update.
Hope that this helps.

Okay, I downloaded Odin 1.85. I found and downloaded the KG3 files, then extracted them. I got Odin all setup, put my phone in to download mode, connected it to the PC...Odin never detects the device.

After doing the above, I tried a different USB cable in a different port.
Any other suggestions guys?
First, test to make sure the usb cable works, ie, see if you can connect in mass storage mode.
Secondly, reinstall kies so that the usb drivers are installed properly.

As per my first post, I can NOT get my PC to see my phone.
I just tried plugging it in to another computer here at work. I'm using TW launcher, USB Setting = Ask on Connection...no dice. When I plugged in the cable, I chose mass storage, and the MTP starts...it says that it's connected to the computer...but the computer doesn't see it. Both computers are running XP.
first make sure that you have USB DEBUGING in settings/applications/development
if this will not help
-unplug phone from usb
-uninstall kies, reboot pc
-REDOWNLOAD kies and install it
-once again now make sure you do not have USB DEBUGING ticked in settings/applications/development
-make sure you have your pc setup to download drivers if neded from windows update servers
-connect phone to pc and let it install all divers it will ask for
-make sure your phone is setup to have "Samsung Kies" in settings/comunication/usb settings
-disconnect phone
-open kies and let it update (sometimes downloaded from www version of kies aint latest)
-you can and maybe should download usb drivers for samsung phones from this thread and install them
[Driver] [31.10.2011] SAMSUNG USB Drivers for Mobile Phones +LATEST UPDATED VERSION+
when everything is setted up, instlled, up to date and kies is loaded
connect your phone
and now saay what is exaactly happening after you followed those points exaact and you connect phone

I've done most of this a few times. The bolded section I'm not sure how to check. I've downloaded the drivers a couple times too...but am not sure I'm installing them 100% correctly.
is there any sound from PHONE when connecting usb?
No, but I have my phone set to silent...ALWAYS. It DOES vibrate though to indicate it is plugged in.
is there any sound from PC when connecting usb?
No.
what is happening on statusbat when you connect usb?
I assume you mean the battery status indicator in the notification bar? It shows that the battery is charging.
what is happening at kies window when you connect the phone?
Nothing...literally.
what is happening at phone display when you connect the phone?
Because I have "USB Setting" set to "Ask On Connection," a menu pops up with three options: Samsung Kies; Media Player; Mass Storage. None of the options seem to do anything. Even with USB set to "Samsung Kies," nothing happens.

Sometimes my computer also fails to recognize the phone. What i do is restart the computer/restart the phone/try again later.
Make sure your Kies is updated.
Try on another computer.
Last option: Give it to Samsung Service Center. They will mostly do it for free or for a very minimal fee.
do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379650
just ignore the portions for ICS
Thanks for the suggestion. I've downloaded all the files. I've also done a factory reset as well as formatted the internal memory card. As far as I can tell, my phone is as close to stock as it possible could be.
I can NOT connect my phone to ANY computer. I've tried four different computers now. Tried installing the USB drivers on one of them...nothing.
I'm starting to think that I have a hardware issue. The phone recognizes that it's connected to a PC though...so I'm not 100% convinced.
Okay...so there has been a new development.
I grabbed another phone (Samsung I997R), and tried it using the same cable and same USB port, and it recognized the phone instantly. Was able to enable Mass Storage and see everything on the phone.
So, that being said, does anyone know why my I9000M won't be seen?
You have already tried everything you could, so new just goto the Samsung Service Center and ask them what the problem is.

Yeah, I'll have to do that I think.
I tried plugging it in to a laptop running Linux last night...still no dice. My buddies SGS2 was recognized immediately.
I toured over to the Bell store last night for ****s and giggles, and the Samsung rep happened to be there. Dude didn't really know anything though...said he's only been on the job for a couple months. Plugged it in to the PC at the store...same deal.
I assume your phone charges OK when using the wall wart or plugged into a PC?
Yup...charges perfectly fine. The phone even recognizes when it's hooked to a computer (launches whichever USB mode is selected). It's just NOT being seen by any computer I plug it in to...but other phones are recognized using the exact same equipment (i.e. USB cable, computer, port, etc. are all the same).
Is it rooted? A guy i work with said kies wouldn't recognize it after rooting his.

newbie to GT-i9000M - can't connect to Kies

Hi to everybody!
I got used i9000M (Canadian) for my daughter (I have LG 3D so not really newbie to Android). It's in factory default state with 2.2 Android.
I tried to update system using Kies but have problem connecting my phone to PC. If I just boot phone up my Win 7 can see it (but not kies). I enable USB debug and Kies says something like "mode is not compatable". Should I untick USB debug and enabler KIES mode under Wireless?
But once I unplug it and plug back I get error 43:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I read and read and read... I'm ready to try odin but I don't know what exact ROM fits my SG... Also lots of stuff is connected to megaupload...
Thanks for any links in advance!
There is an option on Kies to reinstall drivers. I would suggest trying that. But above all, I would advise on rooting the phone and installing a custom ICS rom, like SlimICS. It will add tons of features and make your phone faster while conserving battery life. If you want to transfer files, just plug your phone in, and enable USB Mass Storage mode and you can just drag and drop files like you do with normal flash drives.

Thanks for reply! But here is the strange thing :
If I set USB debugging mode on the phone, my PC sees it with no problem and I see two devices in Device Manager under Portable (and they are identified as Samsung ...) But in this mode Kies doesn't connect - I get message like "unable to connect, switch phone to Kies mode ".
But once I turn debugging off, turn Kies mode on and connect the phone, my PC sees only one device and it's in USB group (in Device Manager). And now I get error 43...
So I think it's not the physical connector (otherwise I would not be able to connect at all) but rather old system - 2.2
I'll try to update it with Odin and let you guys know the result.

You should instal SAMSUNG USB Drivers for Mobile Phones from here
Also try different usb port or computer. Make sure to kill all Kies processes when you using Odin.
Thanks for help - still no luck
Guys, thanks for help! I really appreciate it!
I installed SlimICS - phone running nice. But my both computers (XP and Win7) give me errors...
Funny part is - Odin works perfectly and I can see my phone in Device Manager with no problem!
Anyway, it's not REALLY big problem, rather inconvenience.
I don't know if it matters, but I also noticed that my AC charger for LG doesn't charge i9000. Weird? Do they have different pinout?
Thanks again.
It's me again
Just for fun connected the phone to old Toshiba laptop at work with win XP, without installing any Samsung drivers and ... And Toshiba recognized phone and showed me two drives - internal and SD!!!
My home computers still giving me grief... Both systems (xp and wib7) stubbornly don't want to install drivers! They put some Microsoft driver from 2007...
I'll keep fighting (installed Kies several times, just drivers - couple versions...)
