Features:
-substantial, industrial materials

Required tools:
-utility knife/olfa
-screwdriver
-drill
-some kind of superglue
Materials:
-4.5" heavy-duty steel hinge ($1.50 like-new at Urban Ore)
-4.5" x 3" x 1/4" piece of Lexan or Plexiglass ($2 or less, TAP Plastics)
-2 rubber feet (~1in deep, ~1/2"diameter) ($1.50, OSH)
-2 small wood screws with finishing washers, a few tacks (cost negligible)
-(optional) 90-degree MicroUSB cord (Prices vary - I have one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AR4NC8/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title)
Loose DIY Guidelines (no guarantees, do your own measuring!)
1) Slice a 1/4" disk off the bottom of each rubber foot with the knife.
2) In one of the foot pieces, carve out a slot for the usb cable so the metal prong sits flush with the surface, secure with tacks and glue.
3) Drill holes in plexiglass and rubber disks slightly smaller than wood screws.
4) Line up and screw together as shown in picture, putting glue between the rubber pieces and the plexiglass. (Screw > Washer > Hinge > Rubber Disk > Plexiglass > Rubber foot) and you're done.

Aw c'mon, you guys can't be *that* lazy ... I'm not selling them, just sharing what I did in the hope I'd inspire some other people to do the same (or one-up me...)

Yes, yes I am *that* lazy.. I'm not good with my hands in building things, nor finding parts like that. I rather just pay somebody to do it.
Now, it was a computer, and programing a program in C# or in Java, then I'd do it.. lol

Let me know if you find the parts at home depot - the sources in the OP are too expensive if ordered through the mail, and I live in the middle of nowhere.
Especially let me know if they cut plexiglass!

Finally got around to making a couple of these for me and my wife. Each one cost about $15 (purchased all supplies except micro USB at local giant home store), with the plexiglass driving the price by far. If you have access to cheap plexiglass then you can make them for much cheaper. Or if you make a bunch of them the price goes down quickly (had to buy a large sheet of plexi).
The only modification that I made from the OP instructions is that the rubber foot without the USB cable mounted has a larger woodscrew in it and is not glued.

Keep in mind it helps to have a ROM that will rotate the screen, i.e. non-stock. Didn't realize this when I built my wife's, so hers mounts sideways. Oh well.

Its actually very nice. My only gripe with it is that it is very very light... So light then when I pull my phone out, the whole cradle wants to lift up.. So, I milled four holes (one into each foot) and added magnets... Now it stays put on my metal shelf.
What you have done though is fantastic. Its nice and simple but still has a great look about it. Nice job!

It took me some time to get all the parts (micro-usb cable was on backorder) but i think it came out pretty decent.

I've managed to get hold of a bunch of flip cases that "should" fit the Nexus 7.
Going to attempt to modify it by installing a magnet to re-create the "smart case" idea, but most likely add a few other features like a holder for a stylus, or a channel to run a USB OTG cable inside of the case. I'll post some pictures when I put one together.
Anyone else making their own?

I had no trouble making my own Smart-case. Luckily the way the case was designed I was able to make the magnet flush with the case. Here is a picture.

I tried making my own case but the problem I have is that once I find a magnet strong enough to activate the "Sleep/Wake" function on the front it is also strong enough to put it to sleep when I have the cover folded to the back. I have watched a bunch of video reviews of the numerous cases with the "Smart" function and they never fold the cover to the back to see if it activates the function while you're holding it in that manner.

I will send you a video tomorrow of it when flipped back. The answer is that it does not turn the screen off when folded back. However it does not fold flush due to the design of the case. kind of a quirk and slightly awkward to hold.

Upon further research I have found that the cases online probably use some sort of "shield" that deflects the magnetic field, such as iron, (shim)steel, or muMetal.
I'm curious, where did you acquire the magnet you're using? I have tried all kinds of magnets around the house and even bought some from a craft store with varying strengths. And it would either not be strong enough or too strong (when using with the case I have).

I cut it out of a stuffed animal fridge magnet. The poor moose didn't see that one coming. I also see these magnets in the magnetized clips you can hang things off the fridge. If you live near a craft store like michaels or jo ann fabrics you could bring yoru device and try all their magnets their :laugh: . But I also had trouble with most typical fridge magnets

Yeah, I tried that at the local Hobby Lobby with no such luck. It seems other people are reporting the problem with cases bought online here and here. I'm just going to see if I can find some steel or something to shield it. Thanks for the help.
Also, I wanted to thank you for that video on Youtube about the OTG cable and PS3 controller working "out of the box". I ordered the same cable as soon as I saw that. Can't wait to play Dead Trigger with a controller.

Try both sides the the magnet. Theoretically it shouldn't matter but I've had different results with different sides of a magnet.

Have a small Neodymium magnet barley strong enough to work through the front of the case, then mounted on the inside of the case in the cover. So with the case folded all the way back it is not strong enough to activate the sensor.

I really want to try to make something out of fabric and cardboard. I'm such a ***** when it comes to my devices. Even with cases I always sit them on napkins and coasters haha.
Plus I want something thin that just protects the back and has a thin flap. Nothing fancy just something that doesn't add 3x the thickness of the N7.
Maybe superglue a flap on haha. Stupid Apple and their awesome smartcase. I'm also concerned about a case hindering access to the buttons. They are already a pain to access when laying on a flat surface.

Has anyone else bought this? I'm a bit disapointed in it. XDA has turned off search so I couldn't search for similar threads.
On Amazon they picture the buckle fitting like this. Clearly reaching out and over the entire edge and holding on tight from under.

Mine, fits like this. It's as snug as a bug in the case and no more pressure or pushing is going to make it any better. The buckle just doesn't clasp correctly

I have that case, and it only happens for me when the lower corners are not fully seated (depressed) in their holders. I know you said it is snug as a bug, and if that is the case, yours is definitely made different as mine clasps as in the first photo.

I opened the case up and just put the N10 on it so there is 0% chance of anything keeping it from closing how it was intended.
It clearly is made wrong. There is no way that is clasping no matter what. Pisses me off. $15 product and they know most people won't go through the trouble of going somewhere to ship it back, paying for shipping (and then waiting for them to credit you back) and hope they get it right the second time.. It still holds, especially with the little elastic strap but I'd prefer that extra little security.. Oh well..
I have no luck with cases. My Moko case for the N7 had the magnet improperly placed and the smart cover feature never worked. (it did work though I tested it with a magnet)

Looks like that clasp isn't bent enough. The rigid material underneath is probably plastic whereas metal could perhaps be bent a little more to adjust the fit. Bummer.

I massaged down strip of foam that runs on that edge there and it's sliding over better. Not like in their photo but it's more than it originally was.. It's usable and think once the foam softens up a bit more it'll be even better.

I see the complaints you're talking about. I'd send a picture of mine, but it's at home. I have to sort of flex the cover down while pulling up a bit on the hook to get it closed. The fit is rather tight, so I am trying to lessen the wear of repeated use. When closed the lid dips down just slightly at the hook. It would be a hassle to return. Maybe they would acknowledge a quality control problem and send a free replacement under the 3-year warranty? You're certainly not alone as Amazon attests.

I'm sorry to hear that. Mine fits perfectly. Smart Cover works pretty well to although I'm not used to it yet. My only complain is that while playing with it, the device gets hotter than usual.
I remember that in the beginning the inner tabs were very tight so I bent them to be able to remove the device more easily. I know it's difficult with that tab particularly. You can try using a heater if it's in fact plastic.

Silly question, did you move the elastic band so it's on the outside when closing the case?

Just ordered my Nexus 10 this morning and seriously considering this case...Should I do it? How reliable is their warranty if the case starts peeling or something? Should I worrya bout the tablet getting scratched while putting it on or getting it in kickstand mode so I can type on it in class?

In my modest opinion, the case is awesome. I own mine for about two months now. To be honest, I don't care about the warranty for a 15$ thing except if you have to return it because it's clearly defective.
I like the case, but I found another one in Amazon that I might like better. If I find it again I'll tell you.

I'd say do it. I wasn't going to use a case at all, but I realized I needed one for travel. I really liked that this one didn't have a bezel. I thought I'd use it just for travel, but I've never taken it off.

I mean, I mainly use the nexus without it, especially for gaming. But exactly, I need it for carrying it in the backpack. And the stand functionality is awesome fit browsing. This is the third case I have of this type. I use another one with my note 2 and with the transformer before if this tablet.

Paying particular attention to the gamepad skin, would this be a good way to protect the pad from scratching itself? what do you think?
I just bought a new white xperia play and don't want the pad to get scratched again. I already have a Trident case to protect the outside of the phone so would probably throw the outer skin away. Oh and yes, I do have OCD

I had one before when I sold the Xperia Play last year, it protected the surface of the gamepad and is durable from light scratches and tears. Yesterday I have bought this exactly product again for the Xperia Play 4G that is coming later this week. The adhesive is sticky but not very sticky upon light touching and can be moved around until you desire the location, it will hold on to the pad but you can melt the adhesive if you wish with a hot blow dryer to insure maximum bonding to the gamepad. This is the only protection that I know that protects the gamepad from scratches made from the screen partition of the phone.

Im currently using the black version of this and ive gotta say, its pretty cool. The only problem is trying to stick it on perfectly at the start. It does protect the gamepad and the back for me(Im careful with my phone:silly , but it kind of makes the space inbetween the phone and gamepad smaller, so when you slide it out, it doesnt 'click'.

Oh really. Is it substantially harder or is there still enough space to make it a healthy fit? Thanks. To be honest, I always thought that the force the pad opened/closed with was unhealthy in itself, so the lack of this happening could be a good thing.
Oh and I just noticed, it covers part of the touchpad controls. Does this affect how they operate?

When I first had the sticker, I have not applied the hot air on the sticker, I should have done so before because the sticker did peel more frequently from the sliding and crinkles, (sticker latches to the screen part and sticks). I did prior modifications like shorten the edge but before I had a problem with flex cable replacement twice (not caused by the sticker) my phone efforts upkeep has made me upset and give up, I removed the sticker number of times and no sticky residue was left. When I get this sticker again, I will use the hot air to melt the adhesive more when it does hit my desired result. As for the backside, the corners will peel out unless you have the phone under a case, then it won't be problem. Again, I have not used the hot air the first time, my experience is varied on a non-hot air application.

No effect to touchpads and i like it cause it makes the gamepad part more "connected" to the phone part.

I got the carbon fiber stickers in the mail today. Here is what you get inside:

I have already applied the stickers but not the included screen protector as I used the screen protector that I got from the mixed case earlier in the month. I do not have pictures right now as it is late to show you the application of the stickers. On initial thought, the gamepad is a little bit tough to slide in and out, be careful when sliding as always. I already hot-aired my stickers and that should harden the adhesive to the surfaces, I'll make a review next month on how it fairs.

Well i have never been a fan of cases or so, i always normally used my phones naked, because i think im paying the design more than the inner stuff (nobody thinks of it hehehe), but this phone seems to be a bit more delicate than any other so i`ve been searching for cases or bumpers for this beauty and obviously keeping the design and elegance.
i own 3 cases and this, by far, the most that i liked. I´ll give you my opinion and a mini-review, also the link for anyone who is interested on buying it
First, as title says, its an aluminium bumper, but what a quality, its extremely well done and very esthetic.

It comes in two parts, and see the cutouts for the speaker grill, usb porting charge, and 3.5mm jack
and now, mounted on the phone, look the details
I picked up this color for a reason, as you can see my phone is the gold one so the bumper red, so i made a waaaaaay cheaper IRON MAN version
PROS:
-well done design made by high quality materials
-inner side has a protective layer to prevent of scratching the phone
-keeps the width phone and the thin edge line
-even i have no tested it yet, i think it will provide a bit of protection to the sides of the phone
CONS:
-to be very aesthetic, does not provide greater protection to the screen or the back, it comes flush
-maybe the headphone jack cut out won't fit all of you, it depends on each one (at least its not a problem to me)
In general, this is and excellent accessory for those how likes to brag the design and at the same time adding a bit of protection, buttons fells very straight, great assembly, nice painting, very sharp lines mimicking design`s phone this "effect" could be achieved even more picking up the same color as your phone, but the red one makes mine the Iron man hehe, but this is not for those how wants to extremely protect your phone

It is for me, although the sides seems sharp, they are not so, grip is a bit better due to a wider sides, maybe if you hold the phone by placing your pinky finger at the bottom you could feel discomfort only if it's on the headphone jack cutout

very nice bumper, but all of these aluminum bumpers seem to degrade signal. Wish they made one in ABS plastic.

ive had this case but immediately threw it out because i had to bend the left side to get it in and when its all put together its all warped because you have to bend it. and it scratched my phone as well. do not recommend this case at all.

What a pity. Someone recommended this case to me. When I applied this case on my phone. I followed the installation steps listed on their website.So I do not meet your issue.

I had similar experience. Even worse than the scratches, GPS signal is degraded, still functional...but takes longer to get a lock.
