Hi All,
I have a Galaxy Tab (purchased in Hong Kong) - i.e. not network locked on which I recently made the silly mistake of changing fonts which is now causing a reboot loop on the device.
Pretty much everything on the device is stock standard, except it's rooted. No recovery rom installed.
Is there any way I can install a recovery rom (without Rom Manager of course) at this point in time?
I would hate to format the device and start over
I installed the driver with Samsung Kies and I can see the device under "adb devices" if I boot into the stock recovery mode, but I cannot issue any other adb commands... just hangs.
Any help would be greatly appeciated!
thanks!!!

Howbdid you change fonts? I'm assuming you flashed a zip to cause a boot loop?
Sent from my GT-P1000
Nope, it was an app I installed from market... "Root System Font Installer"
Any way to get into any recovery rom other than stock if the device won't boot?
Sent from my A853 using XDA App
Maybe using heimdall?
Have you installed clockwork mod recovery? That's probablybyour easiest bet I think.

There are galaxy Kernels, such as the one from Modaco, that will install CWM.
In your case I'd switch off, switch on again while holding up the volume key in order to get into the "native" recovery mode and try to factory reset wipe, that will most probably help. Let me know if it did. good luck.
Edit: Alternatively you can switch on while holding down the volume key, use Odin 1.7 and flash the ROTO firmware that can be found in the developer section. So far always my last option, almost bricked my phone twice a day, having a Galaxy since 5 days lol

my lack of knowledge/terminology been sitting here for hours trying to root my phone with no luck. I know it is doable through ADB but I tried installing it and it didnt work. I tried the one click root method too but when it gets to the "repackage files" step, I just plain don't have the option on the menu, here are the options
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
format internal sd card
when I press the update.zip it says unverifiable whatever. ( not in the mood to reboot it just for this)
is there anything on here that actually is just straight up for a beginner?
I am completely confused past this point.
Try using Superoneclick v1.5.5
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You're on jl2 right?
Problem is: Recovery 3e is verifiing signature on update.zip file, you'll have to get on Recovery 2e in order to root from an unsigned update.zip.
you can probably use the search fonction to find the "how To" easely. It took me less than 10 minutes gettings mine rooted.
Personnaly, all I did is flash another kernel with Odin
http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html
K So I upgraded to the kernel you told me to and it booted up normally I have my market back and the superuser permissions but when I press superuser permissions it doesnt show anything other than settings which only have two trivial options.
what do I do from here.

That is fine if you have the superuser app show up, that means it's rooted. You won't see anything in there until an app needs superuser permission. Download titanium backup when you first boot it you well be prompted for superuser access click allow then next time you go into superuser app you will draw titanium backup in the list.

How do I start adding paid apps and stuff for free? possible at all? I downloaded that and busybox
Bump i really need help im not the smartest
bump ive been trying to do this for 5 days now
super one click is the easiest way of all
make sure it is in USB Debug Mode
and that it is connected to a computer that can see your phone in ADB mode
make sure the USB drivers are installed for the Kies and Android SDK
+1 for SuperOneClick
I'm on JL2 i9000m too and rooted with SuperOneClick.
Sup guys, I've got the Bell I9000M in Canada aswell, bought it less than a month ago, and I am not on JL2.
I, instead am on JK4.
What do I have to do to root my JK4 I9000M?
Any replies would be helpful. In the end, I would love to be able to get Darkys Rom on my phone, but no one responds in that thread nor does anyone really know what to do with my phone version.
If anyone could help me out, that would be great. Thanks
Help pls
OK so to start off i had this samsung galaxy s GT-I9000M from bell and i was trying to upgrade it so that my sister could use a newer version of android and not the boring v.2 . ANYWAYS I rooted it then reboot it and it was stuck at the splash screen so i thought it was stuck and i searched for a way to fix it which was to get the PDA PHONE CSC and PIT files and put them in odin and hope for the best. well that turned out horribly wrong. i ended up getting the phone stuck in some boot loop where it flashes a white screen and turns of and it does this constantly :crying::crying::crying: I can still get to download mode but not recovery mode for some reason...... PLS HALP
Ok guys now i have bricked Galaxy Tab.
Main problem is my customer wanted to install custom rom without rooting device. So there is no recovery mode. I flashed with odin and Heimdall but stuck at Galaxy Tab screen.
i found a solution. There is a recovery section in Heimdall. if someone tell me or send me recovery file i can test it and i will tell the last situation. If it works we will find a solution. if not ...
PS: if u have other solutions please offer me . i didnt find a suitable solution.
Thanks for reading
We would need to know what kind of tab.
it is euro tab
Can you get back into download mode (yellow android digging)? Or sometimes a phone-pc! picture? Then you can just reflash.
i can enter download mode but after re-flash system cant start. bec there is no recovery.
flashing has no relation with root... you can flash firmware on a not rooted device WITHOUT any problem.
recovery is inside the firmware you flash....I think you got some confused ideas...
i am reflashing device it reboots and stucks at galaxy tab screen.
i checked 3 - 4 firmwares same error.
i check
adb devices
Result :
xxxxxxxxx RECOVERY
adb shell
Result :
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -
Any ideas ?
try this it might work
hold the power off button for 10 second
to make sure it really powered off
hold down all 3 button together
see if it power up in recovery mode

You don't flash with adb. Flash with odin3 or heimdal.
man i am flashing with odin it reboots and stucks in Galaxy tab screen.
3 button combo stucks "Power Reset or Unknown Upload Mode " screen
Finally ;
Reflash with odin and heimdall :
Result Stuck at Galaxy Tab Screen. Adb result Device in Recovery.
Attempt a full flash with firmware that has recovery? MoDaCo is a good one. Doesn't sound bricked to me, sounds like your rom is not compatible with the firmware.
Are you flashing a ext4 firmware?
I got this tab stuck at the galaxy screen when I attempted a recovery to a non ext4 backup. Sounds similar.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
i cant flash ext4 bec it stucks at %100
i re-tried it it gots FAIL at %100
This is a gsm tab, correct?
Have you tried any other kernels or roms?
Which are you currently trying to flash? Did you unlock the bootloaders?
Sounds like a revert to stock and 2nd attempt are in order.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
i tried to flash PDA section it gave me error. i flash with PHONE section (via odin) it resets but still same error.
it is gsm euro tab. i tried original 5 firmwares
i tried Roto, JM6, Modaco, Overcome still stuck at same state...
i still think main problem is No Recovery partition in device.
If you can get it into download mode, then there is still hope...
Unfortunately, I don't have the answer...
When mine was stuck at galaxy screen, and wouldn't even go into recovery, I flashed a new kernel and all was well.
I also never used Odin, always Heimdel.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
as i read in modaco :
after kernel update enter recovery
but no recovery after kernel update any ideas
Likely because you haven't gotten a complete flash... At least that is how you make it sound.
Are you sure you have and are following the instructions correctly?
Unlocked bootloaders and proper use of odin are the two things I would check right off the bat...
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
i am not sure that if my bootloader is unlocked or not.
i flashed with odin that is fine what else ?
Last resort I have for u
If u are able to get in download mode
Go get roto jme V4 full version
Flash it with Odin
Please read instruction for installing roto jme v4 full version
***FLASH ONLY WITH ODIN***
FOR GSM TAB ONLY
Well, I have an ATT 8.9 LTE (SGH-i957) that I flashed with the rooted ROM using Odin.
All seemed OK..UNTiL the auto restart at which point the gTab powered down, showed the "Samsung" name/logo for about a second...and then just went a "glowing" black.
I can still get to download mode, and subsequently have reflashed with the ATT stock ROM from samfirmware.com. Same result. No obvious problems during flash...but no boot up after a brief presentation of the Samsung logo.
Any ideas??
Thanks....p
Get into recovery mode to delete cache and factory reset.
The "stock" ROM that's floating around is a "no-wipe" version.
I didn't know that was a no wipe version. Good to know.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I appreciate the advise.
However, unfortunately the tablet will only go into download mode....no recovery mode regardless of the combination of "power" and "volume up"...or "power" and "volume down"...or "power" and BOTH volume up AND down.
Any other way to clear cache/etc??
p
If you can get it into download mode, plug it into your PC and try using ADB (assuming you've installed the Android SDK).
Code:
ADB Reboot Recovery
Also, when you say you flashed "root ROM", what file did you use? The Da_G root for the i957, or something else?
Yes...the Da_G is the root file that I flashed.
Well, despite the fact that Odin "sees" the device...I get "device not found" with adb?!
Thanks for the continuing help!
have you ever had the device recognized in ADB before?
You can also flash the custom recovery via odin and see if they key combo works with that.
When you flash via odin, you are using the PDA slot, correct?
Hi....
I only had the tab about 10 minutes before I soft bricked it....so I had not tried with adb before.
Yes...flashed with file in PDA and all default Odin option per instructions.
I'm not sure about the "custom recovery" that you suggest I flash?! Can you point me to it?
Thanks much.
Oh...realize on there is no CWM for the 8.9 LTE.
Is that the "custom recovery" to which you referred??
Thanks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462770
That is the custom recovery for the LTE
I am still surprised you cant get into recovery through a key combo.
I am also surprised you are having this issue in the first place. Just flashing that root kernel shouldn't cause it not to boot.
I know...just lucky I guess
Well, I successfully flashed that recover....no changes.
Still can only boot into download mode.
When I try the key combo for recovery, I DO feel the tablet HD moving...but won't boot.
Very disappointing.
Do you know of any un-brick service that works with the 8.9???
Thanks...p
Adb is really your best bet here. Do you have an Android phone you can detect with adb?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Yes...I can detect my phone (with USB debug set, of course).
Given I can't SET the usb mode on the tablet....I am not optimistic about adb detecting it.
Woe is me, I'm afraid!
Try flashing this kernel in odin.
http://ponack.net/TPC/dagnarf/stock-kernel-odin-image-for-sgh-i957.tar
I'm trying to think of anything you can do. When you try volume up + power, keep holding the volume up, but let go of power as soon as you feel the device vibrate after being off.
Man...frustrating....
Same results.
eeeeeesh
I'll keep thinking
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Thanks.
I genuinely appreciate your help.
So....no "unbricker" come to mind to which I might have to resort?
p
You could try reflashing KJ7 again, and checking "Phone Bootloader Update" this time.
Interesting...
What is the "KJ7" to which you refer?
Thanks...p
Hi gals and guys, I bought a new galaxy ace s5830D (gingerbread) from Telus and decided to unlock it the following way:
1. root using Universal_GB_ROOT_v10.zip
2. installed SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse.zip on PC
3. installed Root Explorer (File Manager) v2.19.apk
4. used ADB shell on PC to read ST5L for unlock code
here is where the problem begins:
-- upon reboot phone goes in a bootloop (screen lights for a sec without Samsung logo)
-- I CANNOT put phone in recovery via home + power
--I CAN put phone in 'download' via power + home + vol dwn; or to RamDump with vol Up; or to Emergency Dload Mode by holding both up and dwn
I have tried the following:
-- flash stock telus rom S5830DTLKI4_S5830DTLSKI4_S5830DTLKI4_HOME.tar using ODIN. The flash goes successful but upon reboot goes back to bootloop? And still cannot enter 'recovery'
-- tried to flash cwm-recovery-ace.tar.md5 using ODIN. The flash is successful but on reboot goes to bootloop. Still no acess to 'recovery'
-- tried QtADB but cannot connect to phone
-- tried OneClickUnbrick but it will not recognize connection to phone either
-- tried AndroidSDK however cannot get to recognize device
So any ideas considering the main thing is I cannot get to 'recovery' and flashing with ODIN still results in bootloop.
Thanks for any advice

What ROM are you trying to flash with ODIN, because I couldn't find any on SamFirmware. Also in order to use ADB, you need the drivers, make sure you have them installed (they automatically install when you install Kies).

The stl5 method might damage the efs partition. It's a coinflip, with 3 outcomes:
-all goes well and you get an unlocked ace.
-your imei becomes 00000000000000 in which case you get aa working ace, but many carriers deny service to that imei, so no calls, no sms, no movile data.
-completely f****d up efs partition. You loose your imei. That's it, you're toast. No amount of flashing fixes this, it's not a hardbrick, but no rom will boot appropriately.
Try and flash a full package with odin. Make sure you use the correct odin version for your model and have the correct firmware. Then go into recovery and wipe everything, see if it boots. If it boots, open up your call app and dial *#06#* to see your imei (to make sure its still there).
If you have successfully flashed with odin before, and still won't boot or go into recovery, then maybe your efs partition got messed up.
Return the phone to telus, just don't tell them what you did.
thanks for the suggestions.. few more questions
-- any suggestions as to what to tell telus that is believable that happened? (phone is 3 days old and i bought it outright)
-- also re Efs partition damage, is there any way to repartition the phone and rewrite imei (isn't it on the stickers behind the battery)?
with ODIN i flashed (several times - all successfully) the stock rom made for the TELUS D version on the Ace. Its someone that build it from a stock Ace. Its available if u google it and many ppl have returned their Telus phones to stock telus\koodoo status via that rom with proprtietary carrier startup screen and all. The Model D of the Ace is not at all available on the SamFirmware site.
I also flashed only the CWM Recovery - sucessfully and still no access to 'recovery' menu.
ODIN i am using is the right version according to all i have read (4.42); and the .ops file is made, as I understand it, for partitions of the D version of the Ace. (odin + ops + rom was all one package that many ppl from telus have said to have used sucesfully to return their phones to stock.)
-- should i try to flash with odin a cyannogen mode 7.2.0; could that make a difference vs stock rom, or does the cyannogen just go on top of the stock rom; ie will not function without a proper stock rom? (i guess what i am asking is cyannogen a complete self contained os?)
--If the efs partition is damaged does it make sense then, that the ADB, oneclick unblock etc.., will not recognize the phone? Am i supposed to be able to even connect to ADB when phone is in 'download mode'? or its made to work only when phone is already booted up?
thanks guys again.. T

Hey again, changing IMEI is illegal in some countries:
Here is a link on how to change it though.
when I go to repair my phone, they normally don't ask why does this happen, they just ask what's the problem. ALso, you have to pretend you are really angry, because the phone broke just 3 days after buying it. That's all. Just be sure that the boot animation is from the stock ROM, as well as the currently installed ROM.
Good deal, had phone exchanged for a new one. That should serve as a lesson to those trying to screw with their efs/ that sometimes it may actually NOT work!!
Thanks guys Cheers!
I have a LG Thrill that is stock ICS. If I boot the phone and check all the buttons the buttons work, however when I try to boot into recovery the phone just boots or turns off. I hold the 3d and volume down button then push the power button until a vibration and lg logo then release the power button. I've tried to go thru adb to reboot into recovery but I cannot see the device in adb.
Have you actually installed cwm recovery?
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda app-developers app
No, I'd love to be able to install CMW or TWRP but the guides I have found all say that I need to be able to boot into recovery.
You can install CWM (or TWRP) by flashing it with Fastboot, but you will need to place a recovery image file named "cwm.img" in the CWM folder in the Fastboot pack. Some available packs (check the Optimus 3D dev section, same device, Euro flavor) have the image files already included, I think.
The method I have mostly used is to flash xbsall's rooted ICS with recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195753
His rooted ICS uses a type of recovery that is in system partition (not recovery partition). So if you want that, or you do not want to flash your device, use Fastboot (or one of the customized variants)
First, thanks for the help. I now have superuser available and couldn't be happier. The reason I decided to do this was that I couldn't get the wifi to switch on and even with the super user access it won't. Should I assume that this is a problem with the phone or is this something that would work if I were to roll back to gingerbread?
It's most likely a problem with the ROM/kernel you're using. I'd switch to another.
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda app-developers app
I can't say thanks enough for holding my hand so far. Is there a good guide that you would recommend for me to look at. Some of the ones I've viewed here have different information for each of them. Is the reason that thus phone is so different from what I'm used to due to the omap processor?
Sent from my SGH-I727 using Tapatalk
I had the wifi problem a while back; it was due to me installing a custom ROM without doing required wipes in recovery before installing it. Not sure how you got to ICS, but if you follow the guide I linked above it should solve your problem. You don't have to install the custom ROM if you don't want. Just stop after installing rooted ICS. Be advised that driver install for pc is fiddly, hence the detailed install instructions.
Can anyonne throw me a line here. When I install the omap drivers for the phone (step f4.1-4.5) the phone still keeps disappearing from the device drivers. Even disconnecting and reconnecting with the volume up button pressed isn't helping. Any ideas? I've tried uninstalling all of the drivers, using system restore to roll back, different cables. It used to work, now it doesn't any ideas?
If you mean the way it keeps blinking on and off, be ready with the mouse. Watch for when it appears and quickly right click on it, you kind of have to catch it. Then point it to the driver in the Fastboot folder (not the one in the omap4flash installer folder) as described. Once that is done you unplug phone, then replug, volume up, and let the two LG drivers install. All LG stuff on pc should be uninstalled and pc rebooted before beginning with all this. Also, some antivirus software can mistake the driver as being malicious and delete it when unraring the Fastboot folder, without it notifying you. And if you have a custom bootloader on your phone you may need to skip running omap4flash installer; they seem to not agree somehow.
