[Q] What would you do with a new Nexus One? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, i'd like to know what upgrades/fix/changing you would do with a new (1 day life) Nexus One (with ROOT, but not with UNLOCK).
What are the best ROMs (and settings) to increase the autonomy?
Thanks.

I'd unlock it, and let it fly free... xD

I did do some investigating on that but the app needs to be opened from the phone once installed and then registered via a key to track it on a pc (website).
Unless i'm missing something?

Try PlanB. You install it via the web market and it does the rest without interaction on the phone end.

So where the hell is the early July update for Bell's Galaxy S?
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Hey man,
Great news, the update is out. In fact, it has been out since over a year.
Its called rooting your phone to install a polished, stable and overall superior rom.
2$ it'll be out tomorrow morning!
The SGS2 came out on july 14th and they probably didn't want to kill sales by upgrading the original SGS to GB first.
Now that it's available, I would expect the update anytime soon...
I live in Canada and bought my Galaxy s from bell also last year.
Whats wrong with you, root your phone.
Man, the experience is incomparable. Samsung takes an average 6month before dropping a new minor update that adds bugs of its own. Root your phone and you'll thank me later.
I mean i was planning to buy a sgs2 to resolve many of the major problems i had with sgs. At a point i thought it was hardware, since no matter how many times i exchange my phone at futureshop for free, or no matter how many application i installed, my battery would only last 3 hours. And when it reached 10% left, it would freeze, lag and become unresponsive. After installing a rom, my phone now last over a day from extensive use.
Non rooted users are dependent of samsung and their carrier. Rooted phone have unlimited possibilities and their request and want are usually answered rapidly by the community.

I'm pretty sure those were hardware or manufacturing defects, that were blatantly exposed by Froyo.
Complaints nose-dived in January and all but disappeared after they finally started getting properly repaired/built units out.

Actually it was a combo effect.
People that had the October and November Internal SD's, plus the original launch of Froyo were the main ones affected. Too many threads to post about this, but most are around here.
The Original Froyo FW was pulled for a reason.
All I know is that I had a "Perfect" and "Mint" November i9000m. Sadly the original Froyo upgrade didn't even 2 days with me. I had the *stutter vibrate* and then it was "Boot loop game over"...
i hope it out by friday. Knowing Bhell they will not release it till the end of the month or even later.
Hi, the sg2 will be available tomorrow with bell & virgin
So, for the room I agree, try a new rom. I had around 800 point in quadrant and now 1700 with a custom rom.

While that might be a nice program for beginners, I don't recommend it in the long run (unless you happen to know how to unlock and root manually already, which even then, you probably don't want to use a toolkit)
It works and most of my xda friends who are getting the new nexus are already rooted in their other devices. It works very well.
Besides, it's pretty difficult to brick a Nexus device.

That's not the point though. While it may work, most people that use toolkits have no idea what it actually does. If they ever do get in a situation where they have to manually root (or use another feature from the toolkit), they are probably going to be clueless...
But don't get me wrong, I too used to use the toolkit when I first got my Nexus 7. But I eventually learned how to do stuff without the toolkit, and I have to say it's pretty cool Knowledge is power
Google really seem to be getting a reaming on japanese blogs/2ch by people who are expecting FedEx to be as flexible as takyuubin companies regarding scheduled/night/weekend delivery.

Nope, I received mine in 34 hours, 6:30pm on the 26th.
As soon as it hit "at local depot" I rang up customers service and had them set to "hold at facility for pickup".
Japanese customers that have never had any prior experience with FedEx are going to expect to be able to ring up and say "deliver on saturday in the afternoon" like it was Kuroneko Yamato or Sagawa Express and Homey don't play dat.

Nexus 4 Israel Thread

Hi all,
This type of thread exists for other places so why not for here
Sure the Nexus 4 is not officially sold (by Google at least) in Israel but it is the type of phone that is sought after abroad because that type of thing happens with Nexus devices. So lets have random (but not too random) taking about using n4 in Israel etc.
How did anyone else get their n4?
Well I am not in Israel all the time but I got my Nexus bought by a friend in UK and shipped to me in Ireland. I use Golan telecom and signal had been great.

i've bought a nexus 4 yesterday really enjoying it im from israel too i got the 8GB for 1770 shekels
Just received my N4 yesterday, from a shop called Dor Mobile. It arrived a week after my order was placed, which included Saturday and Independence day, so I am very satisfied with my purchase.
The phone is 302K, the new type with the nubs on the bottom.
Nice to see some fellow Israelis around here! Shalom lecoolam!
I got mine in December, a friend brought it and a bumper over from the US. Switched from a GS3, and absolutely loving the N4, my setup is described in my signature.
Hi everyone, I got my Nexus 4 about a week ago from a store called Mobile Gadget located in Tel-Aviv. Loving it so far.

I got my N4 2 weeks ago through T-Mobile. My workplace boos bought it for me, after using a cricket Huawei Ascend for 2 years, he said I need an upgrade... I didn't complain about ... I've been using Android tablets since the Viewsonic Gtablet, Ace Iconia 500 and my last one was a Pantech Element. All rooted and modify by me.

For me, I got root when I installed cyanogenmod, but it does not necessarily need that. But as far as I can tell (I helped a friend root etc recently), you need custom recovery which needs an unlocked bootloader. That's fine really, but unlocking bootloader wipes the device - apparently a Google security measure to keep personal info safe but its a pain if you have used your phone for a bit.
But I can do a mini guide here later cause the process is pretty easy. But as summary it is:
1) Get Google sdk and use it to download platform tools and driver
2) Backup data
3) Unlock bootloader
4) Flash custom recovery
5) Download Super SU from play
6) Get Super SU to install root and busy box from recovery
Oh and I guess you could find a toolkit to automate it.
For the Hebrew, I have been using swift key. It's pretty good. Hebrew is a bit work in progress but improves. Occasionally have problems detecting ה- ל- ב- etc at the beginning of words but generally has good swipe typing (they call it flow typing, if you are looking to activate). You can always try out the trial for a few weeks. It's the full version but with a time limit of 30 days or something.
Edit: never tried it but I guess this might work http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688

Just bought a Nexus 7, worth rooting?

I just purchased a Nexus 7 and was wondering if it's really worth rooting and installing back custom ROM. I mean the tablet is already running the latest version of android, so would a custom ROM with a few extra settings and an overclocked kernel really be worth it?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I'd just root it using the exploit so you still have your warranty. The nexus 7 stock is good and stable. Just need rooting
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Root it now because you might not need to flash custom ROMs at the moment but you might want to in a month or 2 and then you will have a bit hard time backing up your data as unlocking bootloader wipes everything.
Worth rooting or worth instilling a custom ROM? I think rooting is a good idea, but haven't seen a compelling reason to install a custom ROM.

It's a Nexus device. Basically a developer's toy. Of course you should root and unlock this bad boy. You're missing all the fun. Have you seen the loads of roms and kernels for this thing?

What about unlocking the bootloader? I'm thinking of rooting mine for basic SU privileges such as blocking ads. I don't plan on running a custom rom as I think stock is just fine.
Mine is rooted and unlocked from the first day i'm buy it.
To me it's more than worth I can't live without ad-blocker, expanded desktop and pie.
And another reason is i'm spoiled by my nexus 4, the nexus 7 stock rom and kernel is not smooth enough for my liking I don't even able to scroll through facebook feed smoothly but with some good custom kernel and rom combined I can.

4.3 leaked/in testing Galaxy S4

Seems as Nexus owners we're not the first to get the update this time. It could turn out to be an elaborate fake but probably genuine as Google are an experimenting company and have released two flagship devices with a vanilla Android option (although they're not "nexus"). From what I've read there doesn't appear to be any big changes (if any actually visible) and more fixes/optimisations.

Cool, I'm another few months away from a handset upgrade and so it definitely makes these phones an even better proposition, having access to stock android goodness. Was impressed seeing how quickly someone had put a vanilla 4.2.2 ROM together for the HTC One, then seen this and was very surprised.
Its good to see really as it shows that Google and the handset makers are finally getting why people like android so much and that is the option of choice and customisation. It may not be the exact reason for doing so but they must be conscious of it. As the last I/O conference showed, it was very developer orientated

I switched back to TW ROM for now. I found the camera app of TW to be of better quality and also if I have the S4, might as well use the features included in it.
So basically 4.3 has very little changes?? Mostly stuff no one will ever see or notice. In other words a placebo update basically to keep flash happys content until key lime comes out! LOL
Yay!

Majority of what is updated won't be frontend. Just additions to the internal workings of android. Maybe some slimmed down code for some Google system apps and such.

Hahaha of course, its a new version of android. , also the pics I posted are a fake, just change your version number in build.prop and reboot. Even the easter egg reads the build.prop.

That picture had the JDQ39 build number. Fake. 4.2
Edit: just read last post lol. I didn't know the easter egg read the build.prop.

My guess is 4.3 is just bug releases and something to keep us occupied before key lime pie

Does not look like a whole lot of new stuff, wonder if battery and memory management will be any better

Oh yeah, battery life on 4.2.2 is soooooo terrible /sarcasm
I routinely get 8 to 10 hours of screen time depending on how much standby there is.
I never said it was bad i just said i wonder if it will be better, no need for a stupid comment
