Hi!
I posted this afternoon because I wanted to get more from my sgs and i still had doubts.
I finally made it to put Darky's room 9.3 in my sgs with no problems. Fact is that... i don't know, maybe its me, but i think i'm experiencing little bit of lag. Last quadrant i did was around 1110.
Any idea if this is normal?
Thank you in advance
Quadrants don't mean anything. Some people get crazy numbers and still feel like they have lag. Don't rely on the numbers for determining if you have lag or not. If your apps are opening quickly, as in you don't just sit there looking at a black screen, then you have relatively no lag. If you still feel you have lag, then apply a lagfix
Personally speaking, darkyy's rom has almost no lag at all in opinion, but to each his own
I get loads of lag when I turn on lagfix in darky rom with the option: convert system

So i went into the at&t store to get a replacement for my captivate because of the wake lag and web browsing lag. They wouldnt give it to me because i bought it on ebay without any contract. So basically i have to work with the ebay seller so i can get my money back or if the seller can get me a replacment.
Anyways i was messing around the with display captivate they have there and it was having the exact same problems as my cappy. A little wake lag that took a second for the brightness to adjust and for the live wallpaper to move. And still was laggy when scrolling through full websites. I played with the iphone 4 next to it and web browsing was smooth like butter!
So before i rant on to the ebay seller about this. Has everyone with a captivate had this problem when they first got this phone with the stock rom JF6? Because if yes i tried every lag fix and flashing SRE both OC and not OC, flashing stock with odin in between. none of that helped me.
With SRE and tuyatamas lag fix using EXT4 it was smooth like butter opening and closing apps and scrolling through home screens. But i still have that annoying wake lag which takes a second for brightness to adjust and for the live wallpaper to start moving, and laggy scrolling with most full websites. i come from an iphone 3gs so i was expecting SMOOTHNESS everywhere.
So does this phone not have as smooth scrolling as the iphones? Im desperate for help here.
Check out the development section for the lag fix.
Basically there's no solution to your problem since judging by your post you tried unhelpful's kernel and that's the best xda has to offer for the captivate in terms of wake up lag.
An alternative to that would be to try the I9000 roms but i wouldn't recommend it as its even more tedious than the regular captivate stuff.
Flash the vibrant hybrid by eugene. No wake up lag and I am on jh3 with unhelpfuls kernel.
Sweet life
sorry for the noob questions but what do you guys mean by unhelpfuls kernel? And does it matter if im on JF6 or JH3? what are those differences? i know im still new to this stuff
scratch the first part of my last post out. i just educated myself about kernels now. im still a little confused about JF6 and JH3 ect. ect.
you can't compare the iphone to the captivate unless you level the playing field. Disable widgets and live wallpaper to start with - then test both. Also make sure no background apps are running on either device.
Although Android does very good memory management, it could be that you have a crap load of stuff running - this will effect the phone's responsiveness. The store phone most definitely has a bunch of stuff running - no one ever maintains them.
Has the time come to finally scrap all the lagfixes with the release of JPA/JPO?
Please, no Quadrant or similar synthetic arguments against. The "real-feel" of the phone is the only relevant benchmark.
So, in your experience in the operation of the new firmwares, comparing them in a native vs. lagfixed state, is it time to dispense with the lagfixes?
Don't think so....
But JPO is speedy when fresh.
Lag is still there, less noticable, but there, you can feel it especially during parallel download and installing apps or when you have a running background updating/sync process.
Voodoo is mature enough anyway, infact, I kinda do miss Voodoo's brightness and color fix on 2.2.
I'm on Jpa,don't feel the NEEd for lagfix...i gets' hung for a while on installation and other small slowdowns, but it's really good overall (noticeably better than cooked jpm/jp6,at least)
Nope, no reason to dump them yet...
Media scanning still takes a while in stock, while with a lagfix it's about 2 seconds. So the phone is in a fully usable state much sooner after booting or when adding/deleting media on the phone.
I also used DolphonHD browser as a test.
On a fresh boot on stock firmware, it takes about 6 seconds to start up.
With a lagfix (I used Advanced EXT4 with one of those custom kernels) it starts up within 2 seconds on fresh boot.
Samsung needs to dump this RFS crap, it's a horrible joke.
There is definitely still lag and random pauses in JPO, no question about that. Although it may be a slight improvement over previous Froyo betas, you still need an EXT4 lag-fix to eliminate the lag and pauses that exist in stock JPO.

No - user experience (especially with RSS reader) is still much better with OCLF (10 times faster).
Maybe, if I didn't use RSS reader which requires fast IO I'd live without OCLF...
Oops! I voted no, but wanted to vote yes!
I use JPO and I experienced lag without apps installed.. So clean it lagged. I didn't clear the sdcard before the lag (I think it's useless), but I did reset to factory defaults.
Just like all the Eclair releases, Froyo certainly seems to be getting better with every "release". As already mentioned a few posts earlier, JPA certainly zooms when fresh.
That said, it really is too soon to get rid of lagfixes. When Froyo matures to the level of, say JM9, then would be an appropriate time for such a thought. Till then, hello Voodoo....
The best test of lag would be NewsRob imo. Can someone with a non lagfixed JPO test it out? I can already confirm it flies on JPO + Voodoo.

I dont have any real lagging issues on my phone but I can see that moving around the inbox is definitly faster with a lagfix, the rest of the phone operations are pretty smooth woth Doc's JPO and the modded kernel.
Compared to ther lesser speced phone the SGS is pretty slow so yes it does need a lag fix at certain functions
heya fellas
question here is with all the lagfixes/kernals
is everybody happy with how fast/reliable the phone is ?
im mainly a tester and was happy since i wont keep a single setup for more than a few days, and since my latest setup,in my situation all it takes is a week and the lag is back ....
wether i was OC'd or not the lag is haunting my phone T_T
current setup is darkys v7 rom and SO 4_5_3 kernal with 1.4mhz set on boot
1 week of normal use with 80 apps installed and lag ranges from 1-8 secs wether it was moving between homescreens/app pages in menu/call log/msgs
last lagfix i was completly happy with was longback when i was on voodoo and OCLF on top of it. i remember the phone was seriously blazing fast like it had everything done before i asked for it, and that setup only lasted a month or so before froyo was out.
i sound like an old hag complaining but seriously who out there is very pleased with a certain setup? anything yall recommend?
I'm on Darky's 7.0 JPY (Have been on Darky's ROMs since 5.1) without a lagfix and the phone is snappy fast, as are all apps I use (about 4 pages of them). Haven't seen it lag in weeks.
Do you face a lag after you launch up multiple apps? Or generally from boot onwards itself?
from boot i know its the media scanner taking over 100% of the cpu
clearing ram clears most of the lag but i notice the crazy lag whenever i have any amount of available ram of 80mb and less
mainly ram jumps between 130mb and 60mb from what i see
got a few widgets to monitor ram/cpu/temp/battery/ and the control widget with 3g/wifi/bluetooth/data/gps/brightness/media scan/reboot and a black background
trying to maintain a small amount of widgets to keep free ram available, pretty much doing my best
I use Autokiller Memory Optimizer with an Aggressive preset, it helps keep multi-task going smooth (Usually have 130~ MB free with it running). Have you tried that application?

Likewise no lag at all .
jje
Most lag comes from bad app.
The only on i can't get lagfree is twlauncher. So i use golauncher instead. I don't se any lag.
I also use ext2 file system.
This with my kernel.
Im happy with this lagfix and i don't think it will be laggy over time.
**Using my own JPX kernel, z4mod, 345MB Ram and ext2 filesystem**
Whilst it never really bothered me in 2.2, in JPX/2.2.1, honestly, I'm not running any hacks. I seriously haven't seen any remotely long stalls anymore. Also, all OS's stall, it isn't only because of "bad apps"; it can also happen when swapping and such. We really don't know enough about the lag problem to say where most lag comes from.
Since JPX also introduces over the air updates (one major flaw with earlier firmwares), if the GPS turns out to perform like fitness-grade GPS (I still need to test that), I'll be extremely happy. But no longer entirely dissatisfied. Taking GPS out of the equation though, I am now happier than I've ever been. If Samsung frees up more RAM, I might even start overlook the GPS problems.
After I test GPS, I'll know for sure.
(PS, I don't use any lag optimisations, because I don't feel they solve the problem properly).
Did you read what this tread was.about?
I can also say with lagfix the phone is better then stock. The latest firmware did alot for the lag, but it still things to do.
**Using my own JPX kernel, z4mod, 345MB Ram and ext2 filesystem**
thanx for all the suggestions fellas
just reverted back to 2.2 (missing darkys already T_T)
will test it out n check how things go
first things first gps surely seems worse than darkys rom for some reason (could it be the modem file ?)
Hey
I just updated my Galaxy S to firmware 2.3.3, JVQ through kies
I was just wondering if there would be any dramatic performance advantage if i used a custom ROM or something?
Also another question, when i updated through kies i didnt do a factory reset, Should i do one now? would it make any difference to my phones poerformance?
Thanks for any help
If you are currently experiencing nothing out of the ordinary (errors, lag, etc.) then I don't feel doing a factory reset would help in any way.
Custom ROMs are made for plenty of different things. If you like what Samsung has to offer, keep at it. If you feel you'd enjoy more speed, power, etc., then try a custom one. That's literally why people make one—to improve on an area where they feel could use improving. Personally, I use CM7. If you're after power, that's the ROM for you.
Thanks for your reply, I do sometimes get a little bit of lag, sometimes apps freezing up...
What im really asking is how noticeable would the difference in performance be?

I use CM7 with Glitch's kernel, and I usually have my phone running at 1.2 GHz. I never, ever experience lag in the launcher—opening the app drawer, transitioning between homescreens (filled with widgets); for the most part, my phone doesn't lag when using/multi-tasking between apps (although some apps still take time to load, of course); I virtually never, ever have any lag whatsoever when browsing the web (I use Opera Mobile); and I rarely have any stuttering in games, although I simply bump my CPU up a bit more if I need the extra power (some games are fairly intensive).
For the most part, I don't experience lag. When I do, I feel like I haven't tweaked my phone quite right. I quickly jumped off the Samsung boat once I realized that there were different, more performance-oriented ROMs available—and I must say that I am extremely pleased with both the performance and elaborated settings menu of CM7, which leaves for a truly customizable experience. If you're at all interested in an experience like this, I'd start looking into custom ROMs. It takes a little bit to wrap your head around it all, but once you learn the basics and set your phone up just right, you'll have a much more enjoyable experience. I certainly have.
I found ram tweaks had the most effect, there's a thread in the dev section on optimizing your phone, or you can use the simplicity rom, I think it has those tweaks all pre done.
Hey everyone
Just a simple question; Is the following setup safe for my galaxy s i9000? What I mean is, will the phone face bootloops and other problems soon?? I am currently using it and the performance is....well lets just say unrealistic. Phone boots up and is ready go in less than 15 seconds. The reason why I am paranoid is because im coming from the stock 2.2 Froyo and the performance gain really is unbelievable.
Setup is:
- Stock XXJVT odex
- Dark Core kernel 4.1 for JVT (It has some lagfix activated or something)
- Adernaline Shot v13
- Current governor (through setCPU): Ondemand -> As recommended by Adernaline Shot thread.
I wouldn't worry to much. The performance gain from Froyo Stock to JVT is really impressive!
I had a pretty similar setup for some time at it was running very well. Some random reboots may occur as with all firmwares (Stock and cutom) I have tried before.
Also, I overclocked it to 1,3Ghz with no loss of stability.
Have fun.
Nice and clean setup. You should not face any problem.
Hello!
Just reporting back on this setup....
The performance really is amazing. Phone runs very fast, apps load and close instantly, no heating issues, browsing is incredible, and not to mention this voodoo sound thing that turned the speakers into boom boxes, and massively improved in-call sound and volume. I haven't had any random bootups yet.
However, the only grudge I have is, and hopefully u guys can help me out, that the GPS signal quality is very lame with Google Maps. Also, Google Maps is VERY laggy, sometimes impossible to use because I can't even scroll around or zoom-in/out because it goes down to like 3 fps. It is just shocking that heavy 3D games can be played for an hour without any stuttering or slowing down, yet Google's own application Google Maps barely runs.
I would really appreciate it if you guys can help me out

Lol ya after doing some searching I found that this is a pretty common problem. However, its not the GPS locking that is bothering me; The Google Maps app itself is VERY laggy, im currently on version 6.0.0 and it is unusable for me. Scrolling around and zooming in/out is like 2 frames per second. Do you know why that would be?
