[Q] (200$) worth it? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a deal for the galaxy tab (bell) (3G/Wifi) - used for 200$ including the box and every thing. I've never used android before but I've been looking to buy an android phone not the tablet. I was thinking of getting Nexus s or galaxy 2 as my first android phone but when i got this deal i was confused. I don't know if the apps on tablet are different than that on phones. Also, if i can connect this with Hdmi without using the media dock or DLNA. is it the same experience as the phone, i mean same apps and so on. And is there any honeycomb for this tablet?

Tab is my first android device, I love it. Same experience as a phone if not better. No HDMI without dock , $200 is a Bargin, if you don't buy it I will lol

thanks for replaying that fast
no body could hack the hdmi thing!
how about the apps and games? I heard it's not like the phone's
and one more thing since i saw your post about the Honeycomb theme, is there any lag issues with these themes? I'm afraid of the 512 RAM and is there any problem regarding the ram?

$200 is a STEAL!!!! Get it no matter the Carrier.

To b honest the tab is pretty crap out the box, once you flash a new ron you'll be having fun, the themes don't affect the tab like it would a windows system, as the themes replace the graphics rather than run on top.
Ram isn't really an issue I usually have 200-260mb free. The prettiest of games only use around 100-150mb
And so far every app I have tried from the market has worked perfectly

Crap out of the box? That must depend on what you're using the tab for, or the carrier - CDMA vs GSM - they're different hardware and not just the radio.
I have a GSM tab, and I use mine to surf, stream video and music from me media center, read ebooks, and video chat with my daughter. I don't play any games -- maybe that's why yours needed a rom. Mine didn't. I haven't had a single issue with mine in the 2 weeks I've had it. No reboots, no issues whatsoever. Rooted, ran OCLF, installed about 100 apps. No problems. No reboots. No FC's.

i forgot to mention something
the tab comes with an extra 2 years warranty, if i do roms and kernels or any kind of hacking what will happen to the warranty?

As soon as you root....there GOES your warrenty.
However if you unroot....what they do not know will not hurt them.

I'd keep in mind that if the person selling it for $200 got it from a CDMA carrier (Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, etc) and isn't going to honor the contract, you'll essentially have a wifi only tablet, as the ESN will be blacklisted and you'll never be able to activate on any carrier. No warranty either.
It's still a steal at $200 even if it's wifi only.

I have a euro GSM tab. So it's kitted with everything working, I'd say the tab would be fine for a average user but I like tinkering with things, after the custom rom I'd say the tab 3x times faster than a standard one

I wouldn't say crap out of the box myself, but when I got mine the stock browser was shockingly laggy. This was fixed in later Samsung development builds.

Dave

200 is deals, i wouldve snatched that up asap

Thanks for all of those replays guys, really appreciate the help.
got it today, and kinda laggy when using firefox and another app. BUT DEFIANTLY HAPPY WITH IT.
I'll try to back up first then ROMs.
does anybody knows bell's galaxy tab would be fine with ROMs because i'm assuming there's no problems like the CDMA versions

It is crap out of the box however you won't know that until you try out a custom rom like overcome and see the performance improvements compared to stock. Overcome rom is a significant improvement in performance and stability. Give it a shot and you'll see. But if you're afraid about the warranty then stick to stock.

Samsung Galaxy S?????

What are your thoughts on Samsung Galaxy S or the Vibrant as it is called any body going to jump from the N1 to the Galaxy S?
I have seen some of the specs although quite impressive I still have a hard time a camera with no flash and Samsungs lack of care for their customers!
What are your thoughts??
Nah, I'm still very happy with my N1, I do have another line which has made me consider getting it for that...but I think my next android phone will have a physical keyboard, front facing camera and dual processor, plus I'm a hardcore HTC fan haha.
I am with TMobile, and I've been Rockin the G1 since it was 1st availible in 08...
I am SUPER excited about purchasing the vibrant the second its availible. (July 21)
I don't mind not having a flash bc I don't have one now. I am however excited to have a zoom on the camera.
If I'm not mistaken, sprints version will have a front facing camera, as well as a sliding keyboard. Now that's Cool. But not having those won't deter me from getting it. This whole time I was waiting till sept so I can get a full discount on the nexus, but F it...I'm glad to Jump on this Vibrant!
But I wonder... I've become so used to flashing ROMs and customizing my rooted G1, are all androids Rootable? Like, eventually will I be flashing ROMS on the vibrant?

i am loving my N1 and I have to say that this is the BEST android phone that I have dealt with! I have an upgrade available as well and I am thinking of getting it but I know that my N1 will be my "daily".
What makes me angry with Tmo is that they always seem to be the last to jump on the BEST phones available as if Tmo is not campaigning for the cool phones like the EVO, or the Droid X. It is alomost like an after thought that we get the "hand-me-downs".
That is why I think the N1 is for now the best android device available for T-mo.
I agree 100% with you. I wish Tmo was wayyy more aggressive in their pursuit of phones. However they did have the 1st android phone. But still...TMo has always been good to me and their customer srervice is outstanding...but Jeeeezus MAAN! Let's get a decent line up of phones!.
After posting my 1st comment about the vibrant, I started looking around...seems like ppl are having uisssues with gps and lag? Great! .... for real?

Having seen what happened with the Samsung Galaxy and Behold 2, i wouldnt ever touch a samsung android phone again!
I know alot of android phones get deserted by the manufacturer and there's tons of complaints about people stuck on 1.5 or 1.6, but what samsung did with those two phones is horrible.
For the behold 2 they didnt publish complete source code, and abandoned major updates very quickly. They said the behold 2 cant handle 2.1, when the Hero - the same hardware (MSM720x) and with less ram has just had a 2.1 update.
The Galaxy was advertised with many features it never actually had (android/software based), and it got so bad that O2 germany allowed anyone who purchased a galaxy on contract to send it back for a full refund, and this was 6 to 9 months after it was released on their network lol.
This isnt the usual 'why didnt HTC update my G1 to froyo' type of rant. Samsung abandoned these two phones within about 6 months of launch and purposly released just enough source code to cover their asses. Not impressed at all
Galaxy s is good. But I'm waiting for something that will leap frog it.
In particular, I want a screen with higher resolution. I'm not used to apple having something better than me =)

The new screen on the Galaxy S is actually the same resolution as the new iPhone...
The only reason I have considered getting the vibrant is that I am hoping it will get rid of my edge/3g issues. Sometimes I get so pissed at my nexus, it randomly switches to edge, then pandora stops, then I have to lock it on WCDMA only, but sometimes that doesnt work lol.
I'll be getting one for the Wife who is using a MT3G
Me I'm happy with my N1, but will play around with it once she gets it

^ excellent real world experience there...
i won't buy another n1 because of the antennae issues, same with the iphone 4. it's a stupid, stupid design problem, just like the n1 has a really stupid problem with connectivity.
OFF CONTRACT- get whatever you want. i really don't understand people waiting for an 'upgrade' on contract, you can vote with your money or just play along with the rest of the sheeple.
the next android device i'll buy will be:
1 another g1, it's hard to beat for the craigslist prices now
2 whatever full querty, physical keyboard, dual processor, 1gb of ram, dual flash, OFF CONTRACT GSM phone comes out from htc.
i'll lean towards #1 since #2 might take another year or so.

I don't know enough about developing roms to know for certain, but if this thing gets released on all the major carriers in the US....couldn't we just flash roms onto any of the devices and flash our service providers radios? If thats the case (which it may or may not be, not sure how the Sprint version may differ because of the hardware keyboard and I think Verizon's version may have an LED flash) then I am going to buy one for sure. There may be a lot of support for these if they really take off and sell well. Either way I am upset with my N1's touchscreen issues and 3G issues as well, and will be replacing it as soon as a supported worthy device comes along. Its a shame too cus I love my N1 and what it stands for, its gonna suck to go back to an old school carrier locked down device.

CDMA and GSM are different technologies, and all carriers use different bands. Short answer is no.
He is saying take the ATT galaxy and flash that radio to the ATT nexus.
Still the answer is no cause a radio has to be made specifically for the nexus to work.
No what I actually meant was if it was possible to just make a sort of generic rom that could be flashed to any of the 3 similar devices...Captivate, Fascinate, and Vibrant...and then flash a specific radio image for your own carrier. Like if I flashed the rom then flashed an AT&T radio to go with it. But after having my Captivate and reading about other users flashing Vibrant roms.....my idea is a bust, there are too many physical and software differences between devices. But we have a ClockworkMod recovery now and the Cyanogen team has a Captivate and they have started work already so its looking like we'll have some new eye candy and functionality soon.

[Q] Nook Color or Samsung Tab

So my original Nook went to the great gadget drawer in the sky. I was able use my SquareTrade warranty and they sent me a check for replacement. I am now debating between a NC and rooting it for an inexpensive tablet or going for a Samsung Tab. A NC is $249, while I can find a gently used Samsung Tab for around $400.
When the difference between the 2 was $300, the choice was a easier. Now that the difference is closer to $150, it is a bit more difficult. I currently have a MT4G rooted with CM7 RC1, but would like something a bit larger for reading, web access and watching movies. From my research, the NC is a good tablet, but seems it lacks a cohesive experience. The Samsung Tab is a better tablet obviously since it is meant to be a tablet. I am concerned about a Samsung product since they don't have the best record for updates, etc. What say you fellow XDA'ers, a NC or a Samsung Tab? How is the ereading experience on a Samsung tab? Thanks and kudos for everyone's help!
it all depends, if you have a tmobile? you could get a galaxy tab on sprint for 300 and 30/month and have service ware your phone doesnt.( that's alot of places since sprint has a much better coverage area) now, honestly if you dont care abotu the device having it's own connectivity? than go for the NC also keep in mind you get to text and do video calling on your galaxy tab. if all you're doing is reading? you'll be fine with the NC rooted, it has pretty good wifi range and the screen while not QUITE as nice as the galaxy tab, is still nice.
basicly, if you want the camera/connectivity, go with the galaxy tab, they are really nice.
if you dont need those things the NC if fine for you.
Can you watch movies on the NC? What about the Samsung Tab? I was looking to add some of movies that I have ripped.

T-Mobile has pretty good coverage in my area, thankfully. I have been a T-Mobile customer for many years and love their customer service.
I am really torn on this purchase. I wish I knew how well the Samsung Tab handled ebooks.
I work for sprint, so i have some bias. I play with the tab daily and saw the nook and knew i wanted it. You can get a "overdrive" that does 3G/4G and duct tape it to the nook and you'd be saving money with more options. The tab does brick, but i haven't seen one person on here that says they bricked a nook. It might be that the nook doesn't have the camera, mic and gps to bring up any issues but i don't use those parts so why pay for them. Just a thought from my peanut gallery.

Why are you wanting to sell the NC?
I have a rooted NC running CM7 and love it. Best 250 i've spent in a long time.
I think GT is much better, at least it has 3G, Bluetooth, 4-button and the Amodled mon. It is a trade-off between price and function.
NC is the highest C/P ratio device!
I have both the NC and the Viewsonic G Tablet. I use both. When size is important, I take the NC (7") . When size is not an issue or I need flash, I take the Viewsonic G Tablet (10").
In terms of performance, the Viewsonic G is by far the best. For more info check out the Viewsonic G Tablet forum.

WIFI - Galaxy Tab - Some Questions

OK, probably gonna have the oppurtunity to get a 7" soon.
Was looking at the WIFI version. I did read here it does have GPS module which is good.
Can I put 3.0 on this? (Sorry been really busy and since I hadn't bought one yet, I hadn't kept up on everything going on with Android).
I know that there are some cool GSM firmwares I had been looking at, why I was gonna pick up an AT&T model. Can I use these on the WIFI only?
Anything else I should know?
The 8.9 in version is coming out early summer (any day.) You can't wait? It has the Tegra 2.

You can't put honeycomb on this as yet, but have it under very good authority from excellent dev that this will be starting soon, keep an eye in the Android Dev section and it will be released there, the tag will more than likely be wifi only or GT-p10101 honeycomb Alpha which hopefully be shortly >:¬}
Hi,
I got the P1010 "Wifi-only", and although it is a quite good tablet, I can't advise you to buy it. If you like this model, you should purchase the original 3G version. Why ? Because Samsung has lowered the technical specs on the wifi version (less powerful CPU and GPU).
The user interface feels a bit more sluggish, and some games compatible with the former 3G tablet simply won't work in the WiFi edition. In addition, the custom roms designed for 3G version are not compatible either. However you can still root your device (i've done it).

Cool. Are there any custom firmwares for the WIFI only yet? (I can start browsing tomorrow). And does the GPS fix for the other 3g tabs work for the WIFI only version?
The graphics card are not as god but i don't notice much of a difference to be honest i still prefer the wifi only and did not see the extra money worth it when i can teather rhetorically device.
And still no Rom yet. Regarding the gps fix not too sure as have not browsed the gsm threads too much.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The Wifi model uses an OMAP3 SoC vs the original 3G that uses the Hummingbird. The difference between the 2 gpus (PowerVR SGX 530 vs 540) is very apparent if you plan to use the tab for media or games. As posted earlier, there is a slight sluggishness to the base UI animation and transitions, many newer/more graphically intensive games will be very laggy or not run at all, and media will need to be encoded to be a bit lower quality for it to run smoothly. If you don't need the tab to be a media/game powerhouse then the wifi version should be good enough.
don't use it for games so did not notice anything.. downloaded a few games on the device but did not play them (they were free with the sammy). regarding the movies, encoded all on 720 automatically for the size and never had an issue in playing them

720p?
And maybe if it was my money I'd take the 3g, but it's a gift. So it was that or something else I had no interest in.
Hopefully a rom can help with some of that sluggishness.
Didn't know they used a lesser GPU in the wifi only, that blows.
Also is there an official ROM for the 2.2.1 or .2/.3? Anything? Or do I just gotta wait and hope there are dev's working on the wifi model?

I would recommend u to buy the original tab.
The hardware is better and it has 3g.
Also its not a lot more expenisve than the wifi only model.
I got mine for 300€ from eBay
Also its the only tablet with phone functionality.
I don't know what the point of the wifi only tab is. if it had better hardware or at least the same as the original version just without 3g it would be okay for a significantly lower price..
But it doesn't.

Again a gift. Not my money. And here in the states anyways, new 3g phone is like 500-600, and not buying a data plan, so 337 is decent. I guess i could ask them to go to ebay, but eh it's their money and want to buy new. I mean really i'm not gonna kick a gift horse in the mouth.

What u can try is what my friend did. He bought a 3G version from ATT for $250. Then he called them after he received it and got transferred to customer relations. He told them the tablet plan is no commitment and wanted to cancel because wifi is enough right now and he's no longer traveling for work. They canceled his plan and now he has a brand new $250 3G version. He only did this maybe 2-3 weeks ago.

VZW and Gingerbread?

I just fired off two emails, one to Samsung and one to VZW, about the Gingerbread update for the VZW Tab. Anyone else doing the same? I told VZW that it's almost enough to make a person want to switch to Sprint.
Good question! Why has vzw not said anything? I mean they sell it and tell you when you buy it that it will be getting updated shortly to GB. Then you hear nothing else.

for ONCe i can say, i'm glad i bought the sprint tab... although i think i should've stuck with t-mobile, because sprint 3g is slow as t-mobile edge.
While midly irritating that vzw is so slow to update, the one update they did enabled bluetooth and I purchased this for what it was at the time, not what it might be inn the future.
My nexus one has gb and I can't really tell the difference from when it had froyo.
WITNESS THE xoom: never buy technology for what may or may not work in the future out you will be dissappointed
When the 8.9 comes out, or the 10.1 comes down in price, I might upgrade...but only for what those devices can do, not because vzw promises it will make my bed in the morning in a few months.

Good point. I've been running GB on my Sprint Tab for about a day. The only improvement I've noticed is that the browser is more responsive as far as scrolling and zooming. People running Tabs on 2.2 aren't missing out on a whole lot and have the luxury of root access.

Really, being able to watch Netflix with 2.3 on my tab is the only thing I'm looking forward to.

to buy or not to buy?? DS7

ok so i am going to check out a DS7 for sale tomorrow. its a t-mob BNIB and was just wondering if i should get the 4G or wifi only? i am using it for my car, as a music/internet/gps devise. i have just found out it is recalled from t-mob and not being sold in stores any longer. i have also heard that there are some problems connecting via wifi, i have an iphone and connect my ipad with now issues. i need some advise on whether or not to buy this DS7. thanks for your advise in advance
For your purposes, I'd get the wifi. Why spend extra on the T-mobile 4g version? + plan?
Also, with the release of new tablets coming, you can
1. get something better
2. get the DS7 for about $200 by Christmas (just an educated guess) when its price falls + coupon. I'm sure Staples will not move these without a discount. People don't like the resolution and viewing angle of the DS7 for $300.

Well thing is, I'm not going to be using it like other people. I am using it only as a controller for my car. I can get this 4G t-mob for less than a wifi only version. My question is, will it affect my usage ability by getting a t-mob vs wifi only? Based on the fact I am only using it via wifi.
I have the wifi only and know that it would work perfect for what you are planning to do. The only thing you have to do is root it and remove the phone apk and telephony apk so that it will not use up your battery.
I don't have the 4g so I cannot give you a comparison.

Hmm well if I can get this 4g one cheaper and I can't get it to work I can always sell it and buy a wifi only version I suppose. I'll go take a look at it and see how I feel. I was thinking if I do get the -mob version I could always just hook it up and use it as intended. But I really would like to learn about rooting and all that stuff. I've been an iPhone guy for so long, this is all so new to me. Lol

If you get the 4G model and remove phone.apk and telephonyprovider.apk, it'll work just like a WiFi with those removed. If it's cheaper, go for the T-Mobile one. Actually, just get whichever model is cheaper. Since you'll turn the cell radio off in any case, everything else is identical.

Yeah since I missed the staples sale, I can get the t-mob version for less than a standard wifi now. I'm going to go by a staples and see if I can get the deal. If not I'll buy the t-mob one.

Hi I have just got hold a a DS7 4g.
Question. I am used to routing, have a SGS1 running Darky's Rom and it fly's. This unit out of the box doesnt and the screens not great.
Q Does DJ steves rom make such a difference, and is it stable?
I'm also considering the Sam Galaxy Tab.
Thoughts anyone.
Thanks

Galaxy Tab 7 has a better screen and battery life, and is inferior in every other way (hardware wise). Software wise, the Sammy comes with more bloat (due to TouchWiz), but has far more root/ROM options.
Install a new launcher (I prefer Zeam) to really see how the S7 performs. It's pretty darned quick; it handily outpaces the Galaxy Tab in every way imaginable. I know; I have both. If you can live with the battery life and screen on the Streak 7, I can't imagine why the slightly better modding community on the Galaxy Tab would sway you. After all, the Streak 7 ships with Vanilla Android (just a custom homescreen, Stage UI, on top; not a whole skin like on the GTab).
If you're talking about the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Streak 7's only advantages are the screen size and the price (and 4G, but the Verizon GTab 10.1 will have LTE). The GTab 10.1 is better in every other way.
Hi, thanks for the reply. I must say I like the form factor and the build quality is superb, the standard UI isn'ttoo bad. I guess I'm just spoilt with sammy's amoled screen on my SGS1. Would you say Zeam works better than launcher pro on this device, also have you routed your DS7.

I haven't used LP in a while, so I can't say for sure. If LP lets you set the rows/columns, that's a plus; not sure about speed, though (Zeam is super quick, free, and I've never had a redraw). My S7 is rooted because I couldn't hold out more than a week before rooting my device Just use Gingerbreak if you want to root; easy-peasy.
Ok so I bought the DS7 but it won't see my iPhone that is jail broken and running mywi to use as hot spot. Any words of wisdom? Should I just root it and be done with it? I'd like to install a mobile front end and use it as my all around car system. Thanks guys
