Hi everyone,
I know this will make me sound like a complete noob but it doesnt matter. Any help or any pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I have a stock motorola milestone 2.2.1. I hate it and have read how stable some of the roms are and I would love to experiment with them. However, never having a windows phone or an HTC before I have no idea how to do this with minimizing the risk.
So I have rooted my phone with universalandroot and have installed rom manager and titanium backup. Unfortunately, I read that rom manager wont work with the Milestone.
All of the threads on boot recovery and other methods seem to differentiate from one another. Is there a safeR method. I know no method is safe. What programs do I need to install on my computer and or my phone for this to work?
I know this a lot and I truly appreciate any help and support from this forum.
Thanks

First of all, ROM Manager does not work with the milestone. So please remove it and dont ever install Clockworkmod recovery on the milestone.
Second, What ROM do you want to install?
You need Androidiani Openrecovery for all your flashing needs of customs ROMS. You will need rsdlite to flash sbf files and offcourse the Moto usb drivers. Check the sticky threads in the development section. There are many tutorials.
This is easily one of the best ways to get everything done in the way of flashing a custom ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983516
Depending on which ROM you want to install, it will determine what you need to download.
After rooting the phone, you will want to flash a vulnerable recovery sbf via RSD Lite, as shown in that thread the VR you should use will depend on your bootloader version. If you are running 90.78, then you can flash this VR: http://android.doshaska.net/rootable
After that happens, you can create a backup of all of your apps using TitaniumBackup.
Once you do that you want to place OpenRecovery(AOR) on your SD Card. Follow the steps from the first link I posted to get that on. You will want to place the custom ROM that you want into OpenRecovery/updates. If you are planning on using CM7, you will also need to download google apps from the CM7 thread here.
Once that is on, you will want to boot into recovery(power+x, see the Moto M logo, then release and push camera button+volume up), apply update.zip.
From there you want to select the Nandroid menu with the d-pad. Create a nandroid backup of what you want.
Now is the crucial step. You need to wipe the caches and ALL data. Choose wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache partition and wipe data/factory reset.
Now is time to apply your custom ROM!
It is recommended to create a nandroid backup everytime you flash a custom ROM, in case of anything going wrong.
Navigate to apply update in AOR, select the ROM that you want, select yes. Once it is done installing, wipe the caches and data AGAIN.
If you are installing the google apps, you will want to wipe the caches, flash the google apps, then wipe the caches again.
You will probably have to apply the baseband for your carrier, so you will need to navigate to change baseband, and apply the baseband for your carrier.
If you followed those steps, you should have a brand spanking new custom ROM on your phone.
Hope this helps.

I just really want to thank you so much for helping me with that. Your tips and the link to the guide explained step by step what I had to do.
Right now I am running miui gingerbread on my phone and it runs and looks great. Thanks.

First off, if you are using CW Mod 3.+, go back to a pre 3. version or get Amon_Ra
If you go back to a pre 3. CW-- Wipe system 3X and all data/caches 5X, then retry
Did you reformat your sd card outside of phone with something like sdformatter and repartition 1gb 0 swap--back up card first and Nandroid
You may have jumped into this too quick, with only having phone 2 days
You need to flash Cyanogen rom then gapps then DT
I would study the CM7 thread, from OP page on--
Ken
First of all, THANK YOU VERY MUSH FOR THE KIND REPLY.

3x and 5x does it mean 3 times and 5 times ?
When the system was getting the Infinite Looping.
I restored the recovery rom. And while the recovery process was hapenning it freezed at "LOST+FOUND" Had to remove the battery.
Today i was trying to backup the ROM again and again it freezed at "LOST+FOUND" . Had to remove the battery.
Is it normal ??
I read some HOW TO stuff but seemed very complicated. so Then i went for the YOUTUBE EASY steps videos. So I rooted with the APP i specified above. And went for the ROM MANAGER.

Well all my friends have the LATEST versions. Even my brother had 2.3 on his Nexus S.
Only i seem to be stuck here .
Would there be any hardware faults for all these errors i get ?
The nexus s shipped with 2.3
This is why I and others will always tell you people to read the wiki.
Flashing roms and partitioning the SD card with a ext partition while not even know a nandroid backup is....:-(
1. Boot the phone into recovery. Not sure if its still cwm since I don't know wtf you meant by recovery rom but eh.
2. In recovery factory reset/wipe clear data etc. Basically clean everything you can a option to clean/wipe/format EXCEPT SD card.
3. Flash a rom. . Flash gapps if its cm7.
4. Read wiki.
5. Read wiki.
6. Read wiki.
Basically get the phone running. Stop ****ing with **** until you have a clue what you're doing. Then have fun.
Well after using the same file many times. i finally got the CM7 running
Thank you all for helping me out . . .
Sorry for being so noob
glad you got it
you want 0 swap not 32
also, don't recommend, as mentioned, using CWMod 3.+
Definitely read wiki and scour threads from OP pages on to learn
I have 14 pages of bookmarks going back over a year from studying
Do regular backups of phone and sdcard
Good Luck

Hi Forum
I'm still a newbie in all this android business, I try to read as many threads as possible before asking questions, however I just read A LOT about this MIUI, and people said there was released one for Optimus 2X? I just can't find it anywhere on the MIUI site.
Also if I do want this, how do I go about installing it? Can something go bad? I just don't want to brick my phone as I was close to doing so when I was playing around with flashing my SE phones
Help would be greatly appreciated
Kind Regards
~Neefy
Hi, you might wanna start and flash CyanogenMod first, also that is the best path to MIUI since the whole structure of MIUI for O2X is CM7. So go ahead to the CM7 thread and follow the guide there (I believe there is one).
I can't however tell you that not everything will go OK, since I don't know what knowledge do you have, but just be careful and everything will go great.
As for the MIUI installation it is somewhere in the only miui Thread at the moment in the development section.

miui germany .de celebration HD beta version ^^
i think they removed the link
I found the link, but what is the process? I understand I have to install RomManager, then clockworkrecovery, place the miui .zip on my SD card (only got internal, is that ok?), boot into recovery, "install from zip"
Is that all? Anything I need to do before?
i am also interested in this
Anyone with time and generosity who wants to help us newbies ?
External is needed if I'm right someone may be able to back me up with that but basically use rom manager to flash clockwork mod recovery (cwm). Use volume buttons to move up and down Recovery menu and power button to select, it's recommended to make a nandroid backup before flashing so you always have an go back to how it was if anything goes wrong. Next step after backup is to factory reset, wipe cache partition, go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache and battery stats. Now go to install zip from sd card and then choose zip from sd card and select your rom and flash and reboot. I'm new to this also so hope this helps.

but where does one get the zip image
The zip file is no problem, are you sure about the external SD thing tho? I don't have one
if you wqnt to flash roms you should get one. i got a 16gb one for about 14 euros from amazon
Could you link me to that ?

Wrong ! There are 2 versions of CWM. One for external and one for internal.
Go to dev section and search
As others have said, start with cyanogen to "cut you teeth" and then you can move to the MIUI ROM
MIUIUIUIUIUI is *dogshite* awful, but the installation process still remains the same. Flash zip. You do not need an external SD, you just need to read a bit more on recovery mounts.
Personally, CYANOGENMOD ALL THE WAY.
But what is the point installing cynagenmod and then installing MIUI right after?
the current MIUI for o2x is based off CM7.
But wouldn't it be the same as installing it from Stock in comparison to installing it from CM, won't I have to wipe and factory everything anyway?
Please clarify As said, I'm still very new to all of this!
if you are concern about bricking i suggest u make a nandroid backup or have another working rom on your sdcard. other than that process is the same.
Is there any way to do this without internet connection on my phone? My carrier stopped my internet connection because I forgot a bill I can't get rom manager due to not being able to get to market, any .apk or such?
Hi guys.
I want to get into rom flashing, but to be honest I find it rather confusing to say the least.
It would appear that ROM manager seems to be the easiest way to flash my phone correct?
Am I right in saying that all I need to do is download whichever rom I wish to install, rename it to "install .zip", put this file on the internal SD (not quite sure where exactly), then use ROM manager to flash, then it's done?
Is this the safest way of doing a flash?
Sorry for the noob questions.

I thought ROM manager took all that out of it. All you need to do is make sure your on latest CWM (which is does for you before you can download, i believe) and then you pick your download. Once it finishes it asks you whether you want to install and it does it all for you...
There is no "safe" way to flash. Something can always go wrong. I advise you follow the directions on the threads of your chosen rom. That way you can learn of the current bugs, the best way to flash based on your current situation (GB, Stock, another ICS etc) and what you may need to do before hand e.g. wipe/factory reset
If you have any questions on a particular installation method search the forum and the thread. If you cant find it then ask within the thread of your chosen rom.
Usually if its another rom i believe the best thing to do is wipe/factory reset from recovery menu and then choose zip from sd card. (But you still shoud read the first 2 pages and last 3 pages of the thread)

What is the CWM, and why do I need that?
CWM = colockworkmod. Its basically the a new recovery menu that gives you more freedom to what you can do whilst in the menu. You have it on non-rooted devices (stock firmware/samsung firmware) but as i said it provides more freedom. I believe almost every rom uses a version of it, either adapted or not.
Im not sure you will be able to use ROM manager on a device that is not yet rooted (rooted means you have administrative privileges like in windows). You will need root access as you will be changing the system files which if done incorrectly will cause something to go wrong. Which is why you wish to use ROM manager. TBH is very hard to do something wrong with the SGS and not be able to come back from it to have a fully capable phone again.
Don't rush into anything though. Don't root or flash anything without knowing the risks and what could happen, and in-turn what needs to be done to correct it. If you know this then usually you will understand what went wrong and how to fix it.
Sorry for leaving all these long messages, just trying to be clear
Hello guys, it's me (nay, not Mario :laugh again. Another question.
Got a new battery which seems to hold charge well so I thought I might flash something in the likes of CM9 or CM10(.1).
I'm starting this thread because I would like to be totally sure what should I do (although I know I will never be 100% sure I'm doing it right). The reason I'm starting this thread is fear from bricking my phone (now troll me).
A little background (might be TLTR so freely skip it):
A year or so ago, I had a LG GT540 in my possession. Spoiled by the painlessness (is this a word?) of flashing Huaweis I fearlessly dared to flash fastboot on it in order to flash custom ROMs and stuff. The installation instructions seemed dead simple. Battery was full. Followed the procedure from letter to letter. Despite the fact that I followed the whole tutorial, in the end I got a hard brick. One hour later I thought it ought to be either finished or terminated due to an error of some kind. But no. It just stuck. Unplugged it and tried to turn it on. Fail, bootloop. Tried to reflash it, in all the modes I knew of. There were two or so modes: emergency and some über-emergency mode thingy. Fail. Then I tried with the official LG update tool. Final fail. That was the worst idea one could ever get, it got hard bricked, with no signs of life at all. RIP.
Back to the question.
As a proof that I used that damned search feature (at least tried to) here goes the procedure as I've understood it (while searching):
do a Nandroid and TB backup (optional, but you might really regret it if you don't do so)
back up your EFS folder
wipe data/factory reset
flash the ROM thru recovery
reboot
if it bootloops, reboot to recovery manually
flash the ROM again to finalize the procedure
eventually flash GApps
So,
did I leave out something?
what's the most reliable procedure/app to backup EFS?
is there a way to verify if EFS is properly backed up?
what's the proper, ahem, primer ROM to flash first and make stuff glue together nicely?
Semaphore's recovery tends to blink when browsing through using the capacitive menu button instead of volume buttons, is that a problem?
is Semaphore's recovery itself, regardless of the before mentioned issue, appropriate for flashing ICS/JB (or should I flash some other kernel/recovery before flashing)?
will I survive on XDA with that much questions at once?
It's SIM unlocked (don't know how, second hand phone, most likely with Helroz's unlock application), other details are in the signature.
Thanks in advance!

Please, I know my English ain't perfect, but try to skim through my post. At least the second half of it.
your english is fine i read your post all of it i was just giving you a bit of direction incase you soft bricked your sgs,and as for what the best rom is they are all good roms the devs spend alot of time developing them its just a matter of what set up you like so try them all till you find one you like darkyrom v11 ,is pretty smooth its ics and stable cm 9 is good also ,remics jb 4.2.2 is good also .sgs i9000 is almost impossible to brick just read or watch the info two or three times just to be sure goodluck

In fact I wanted to know (along with the doubts from post #1) what do I need to flash prior to playing with ICS and/or JB because I thought that there are some ROMs (e.g. CM9) that do the necessary repartition process(es) as there are some partition layout differences between stock Gingerbread and the newer ICS and JB ROMs... and that failing to do so might lead to soft/hard bricks.
I know that asking questions like "What's the best ROM for my phone?" might lead to subjective and conflicting answers as some prefer lightweightness over functionality and vice versa, thus I don't prefer to do so, neither I did so in my first post. Sorry if you understood me otherwise.
Hope that I made some things more understandable now.
Okay, solved this doubt:

Help me!
I finally dared to flash CM10.1! Everything went silky smooth. Here are my conclusions for further reference (maybe someone can find them useful). These might be inaccurate, but I didn't brick my phone. After all, don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong.
How I flashed CM10.1:
do a Nandroid and TB backup (optional, but you might really regret it if you don't do so)
back up your EFS folder
wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, advanced > wipe dalvik cache
flash the ROM through recovery (install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard)
now it will reboot and finalize the flashing if everything is OK
eventually flash GApps
Questions from the first post and ...answers:
Q: Did I leave out something?
A: Most likely, not.
Q: What's the most reliable procedure/app to backup EFS?
A: Type the following stuff in Terminal Emulator or adb shell (root privileges necessary):
Code:
su
tar zcvf /sdcard/efs-backup.tar.gz /efs
# some users suggest that backing this up can also help if IMEI goes belly up
cat /dev/block/stl3 > /sdcard/efs_dev-block-stl3.img
Q: Is there a way to verify if EFS is properly backed up?
A: Dual File Manager is quite useful for testing archive integrity.
Q: What's the proper, ahem, primer ROM to flash first and make stuff glue together nicely?
A: CM10.1, I guess.
Q: Semaphore's recovery tends to blink when browsing through using the capacitive menu button instead of volume buttons, does that mean it will cause ROM installation to fail?
A: I don't know, maybe, so flash CM10.1 with CF-Root kernel installed instead.
Q: Is Semaphore's recovery itself, regardless of the before mentioned
issue, appropriate for flashing ICS/JB (or should I flash some other kernel/recovery before flashing)?
A: See previous answer.
