Battery Problem

Hey,
I thought updated firmware fixed the stock messaging battery issue?
My phone had a full charge and 2 hours later, 15 texts sent/received, im down to 87% Just unlocking my screen now, i went from 89% to 87%!!
What is going on!! I have SMS popup.

I was just looking up stuff because my phone lately has been draining fast and I really have not been using it. I am at 65% and I have barely been using it today.It came off the charge at 10 and it's 12:30 now. Something is up. I can't seem to find an app that tells me which apps are using data in the background cause I think that might be my problem. Also, I checked Spare Parts and it said Facebook was Partially Awake for over 30 mins with only 14 hours up time. Hmm. I don't even have Facebook set to auto sync.

Post your up and awake times.

I've had this issue since I had this phone. I go to school with 100% charge at 8:30 and by the time I get out 12:30 it's usually around 55-65% with very limited usage. I've had fresh rom, modaco, and all the available aosp roms and it's the same issue no matter what so I just learned that if I want this phone it's has to live on the charger when I don't use it.

How many bars do you get in the classroom? Poor phone signal will drain a phone very fast. There's a couple conference rooms here where I work in the basement where phones get no signal and I see the battery on my phone drain much faster. This happened on all my previous phones as well (HTC Mogul, Diamond, etc.).

In school.....
how does it perform outside of school.. when you are at home on weekends or other places????
I am only guessing here..
but at big university, the buildings are very big.. and sometimes in hard to get receptions areas...
so, the phone might be looking for the phone network, and that will drain the battery very fast...

sorry, where can I find up and awake times? Total newbie I know...

I also noticed that my battery is at 73% now for SysTray Monitor but the HTC battery icon is nowhere near 1/4th gone. Looks like 1/10th is gone.

another thing to consider is that if the school has wifi available and your's is turned on on the phone, it may be connecting or attempting to connect, to the school's wifi. just a thought. i tend to turn mine off, as well as my bluetooth headset, when i go to work. seems to help, but i also have a battery drain problem. this doesn't solve it, but, like i said, it helps. i also turn my screen off manually, rather than just setting it down and letting the screen turn off automatically. every bit of energy saved helps, but it will only get about 25-50 percent better. doesn't completely solve the battery drain problem. if anyone finds a sure-fire way to solve this problem, please post and post and post. i've seen this problem arise all over the place on XDA as well as other sites. may even start a new thread with the solution so it will pop up in the search.

I guess this isn't something I have not really looked at but now it does make sense, b/c in some rooms it is hit or miss so i'll just throw it into airplane mode when i'm indoors and see how that goes. Thanks

i am also experiencing a situation where when i plug my phone in to charge, it will charge regularly through about 80%, then it seems to fly through the last 20% within a matter of minutes. it was at 82% last night when i checked it (it was already on the charger for about an hour). then i put a bowl of soup in the microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. when my soup was done i just happened to look at my phone, and it was already up to 96%! that just can't be accurate. something is causing it to either charge improperly or the battery charge reading is somehow inaccurate. anyone else experiencing this strangeness when charging that also has the battery drain problem? as many times as i've seen these problems posted together, they have got to be related to each other.

There is an option to wipe the battery in Recovery.
Charge the phone fully, and then Wipe the battery while it is still 100% charged. This will help the battery reflect a more accurate percentage.

I did that, it worked for a few days...then I started to have issues. I think it was when I switched back to the stock messaging app. I was using Handcent before.

Awake time- 0:32
Seems reasonable. I was on the phone for a while

well, are you guys using modaco's custom ROM or kernel? there's an issue with the power management that HTC didn't include when the released the kernel... but i'm not completely sure what causes it.

Need Help w/ Battery (Yes, I've done my research as best I could)

Ok, so ever since I upgraded to CM6 (which I LOVE) I've had serious battery issues and I've tried to fix it by installing Pershoot's kernel and I have SetCPU to underclock in depending on what battery life it's at. Also, I've wiped my battery stats and I've calibrated my battery already.
Today my battery was at 64% after only 3hr and 26min. I don't have GPS on, auto backlight is on, 3g/2g and sync are on. If it makes any difference I have the Korean radio installed (which btw improved my reception a lot! ). After about 9hrs and half, my nexus one died. As per usage, I wouldn't say it's much at all because I'm in class most of the time and I've only talked on the phone for about 1 min, browsed a few websites, and sent only a few texts.
I keep reading on the forums about how people are getting 1-2% lower per hour while on standby but the % I reported earlier, my battery's draining at over 9%/hr!
I really just want to be one of those people that can say that "I still have 50% left after 12 hours!" lol
So, is there anything else I can to increase battery life? Is my battery just crap? Any recommended setCPU profiles?
If you're one of the users that get really good battery life from your Nexus One, please tell me what you did to get it that high! Thanks!

Don't use setCPU to manage battery life, only to overclock. It overrides the kernel's settings. Sounds like you need to wipe and flash the rom again. Then gradually add applications you want, something is sucking battery life.
Last, buy a new battery.

CM6 has less than stellar battery life. If you check the "help with my battery life" type threads, you will see most of the OP's have CM6 as their ROM. Try another ROM, you will get better results.

Are you using a battery you purchased on ebay? Or are you using the stock battery? ebay batteries last me about 9-12 hours and die. The stock battery is amazing

Just a viewpoint on what I'm facing. For the past week I've gone to bed with 100% battery and woken up ~7 hours later on 75%. I've tried WCDMA and GSM auto settings and neither male a difference.

I'm using the stock battery so I don't know what the problem. I just ordered another official stock battery though yesterday and I'm going to see if there are any differences.

Thanks, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I thought I was being an idiot by doing something wrong...
I've calibrated my battery several times already while trying to fix this issue. Could that have killed my battery life?

1) Discharging the battery below 10-15% is bad for the battery, doing it many time will destroy the battery, making it last just about nothing.
2) Check CPU usage - download System Monitor or some other app like that, and check the running frequency of the phone. When you just run the program and don't touch the phone, it should float around 300 MHz. If you have it locked on 998MHz - you have an app that got your CPU stuck in a loop.
3) Download some app that stores battery stats, and check your discharge current and battery capacity - that way you'll know if it's your battery dead or your apps drawing the juice.

crap, all the guides that i've read regarding calibration told me to discharge it completely.
My CPU usage seemed normal. It was stable at around 245 and would jump up to 998 from time to time that doesn't last for more than half a second though.
My battery seems to be in good condition as it's labeled as "healthy" by my battery apps and the voltage seemed normal....

Do a nandroid back-up of CM6, and then try out the above ROM. You can always go right back to CM at any time.

For calibration, complete discharge is necessary. Doing it once is not too harmful. As long as the battery is reported "healthy" - you're ok.
There are apps that will show you the approximate capacity of your battery in numbers. Try to find one like that.
Please check discharge current and voltage over time. It doesn't make sense that a phone on 245 MHz in sleep mode will draw the current required to discharge 10%/hour.

Awesome, if you find a fix let me know please.

I haven't been able to do any of the suggestions yet but (when it comes to flashing) but I do have an update that might shine more light on this issue.
Today in class I noticed that my N1 was warm when it was in my pocket but nothing was running and gps and bluetooth was off. I checked the temp of my battery it was at 36.1C while it's usually at 30-31C when I'm not doing anything.
Also, I checked spare parts this morning and found that, while I was asleep, my N1 was not asleep for half that time but my screen on for only 4% of that time (probably from my messing with it before and a little bit after sleep).
I've checked to see if anything is running in the background that might lead to this but so far none of my apps should drain my battery that much while I was asleep.
Is this normal? Shouldn't my phone be mostly in sleep mode when I'm asleep since I'm not doing anything to it? As for the battery heating up, do y'all think it's a faulty battery or the fault of the OS?

I checked and mine is at 75-78F while in class. My n1 is also in a case, so for it to be that low is good. Just thought to throw that in as a comparison.
Also i've switched ROMs to help with battery, no luck there. Still experience 7-8% drop per hour.
I've been keeping my phone off now at school, which has helped, though I still lose nearly 15% while it's off.

I understand if my battery was at 71-78F but my battery was at almost 97F just sitting in my pocket...
Hmm, I think it's weird that the battery still drops 15% when the phone is off...

i was using the cyanogen mod 6.0 for my nexus one and had a major battery iss i would wake up for work fully charged 100 percent goes on stand by with my set cpu to the lowest possible and the task manager running... note its on standy by with the screen low powered no gps or wifi running? so its 100 percent charged and then i leave to work arrive at 6 or 6:30 and its down 10 percent or more??? please if anyone knows a good kernel or rom to use please let us know my battery is in good health and from stock.....

im checking the cpu usage but i really dont know where and which app specificly i use but i took a few pics and will try to post them up as soon as possible....battery stats i will post that up too...please help anyone...i was using cyanogen mod now leofroyo2.1

[Q] Captivate Battery and Serendipity

Hi folks.
Sorry if this is a redundant question or thread, I have used the search feature and am not getting the results I want. Furthermore I have a 2 year old and 9 month old hanging on my legs here and just need an answer so again apologies if this is redundant.
I have had my Captivate for about 5 days now. I rooted it and installed Serendipity 5.3 ROM. Today I noticed my battery went from 100% to 5% in 4 hours. Is this normal?
I got home and updated Serendipity to 5.4 and then 5.5 but not sure if that will fix the battery issue. The day before I ran the battery all day 10 hours and I was at 35% which to me was normal as my iPhone 4 had the same performance. But 100-5% in 4 hours seems a bit strange.
Any help would be appreciated sorry for the long post I need to get back to my kids.

4 hours for almost 100% battery usage is not normal.
check your wifi setting, gps setting first.

Sounds to me like your battery needs a calibration. It's generally a good idea to re-calibrate your battery after flashing. I generally get 20hrs on my Captivate with Serendipity 5.2 with average usage.

Now that one kid is asleep and the other on her way....what is the optimal wi-fi setting for best battery life and the same for gps?
Also, I looked at that thread and I am in process of trying it out integrasaurus.
This is my first time with an Android phone, I came from an iPhone 4 jailbroken so I am an Android virgin and 5 days old.
I also want to say I am sorry about starting a thread if this topic was hit on already. I have been around forums a long time and I know how frustrating it is when noobs do these things so I thought I'd offer my sincerest apologies for doing what I would get mad at too.

usually after you flash a new rom, the gps is set to on. turn it off if you are not using it;
go to settings->wireless and network->wi-fi settings, then click menu to bring up the advanced->in the wi-fi sleep policy->make sure select "when screen turns off";
go to settings->applications->samsung apps->make sure it is "off"

I got the wi-fi taken care of though thanks for that.

It was strange today though, I plugged the phone in to wall ac and it took forever (5hours) to charge from 5% to 40% and then drained in less than an hour back to 5%.
Its charging now and has been on my usb port for 2 hours and its up to 72% from 4%.
That was also a confusing mystery.

Hey guys, just want to say thanks again. I'm still working on calibrating batt but I after reading some more in the forums (kids finally both in bed and OUT) I discovered that I had 2 task killers installed and that these apps are battery killers (at least in some opinions).
I uninstalled them and charging seems to be moving faster than before. I will let you know how things go.

I am running Serendipity 5.5 and my battery typically lasts between 26-30 hours with normal use. I don't use any task killers, but if you have your task killers set to be too aggressive I'm sure that would drain the battery pretty fast. I'd suggest just ditching them completely though, as I get over a day's battery without trying to manage all of that.

Also, check if ur gallery has the sensor bug. U can find this out under battery usage using the SPARE PARTS app.

It says Gallery 2 177872ms...what am I looking for to see if there is a bug?

yup, I deleted them already. I believe that was the cause of the sudden change in life, as I didnt have many problems before them.
After my battery cal I have been running the phone on and off normal use for over an hour. Battery is now at 95%, started at 100%.
I see improvements already, but will hold off saying its fixed completely until I can give it a day or two of testing.

sometimes the thumnails get corrupt which eats battery while trying to load and need to be "refreshed" a simple way to do this is in the app SGS TOOLS run the script "clean_thumb_db.txt" this should fix gallery issues.

Thanks for this info. This will be something I will keep an eye on for sure. Phone is still above 90% after over 2 hours. Hoping the calibration and deletion of task killers did the trick.

Charge battery 100% then some... Power off phone and let charge longer... Boot into Clockwork and reset battery stats.... Run the phone a few charges and you should be gold.... Under normal/light use I can get 1.5 days out of my battery...

Also check your wireless settings. Try setting them to turn off wireless when the screen is off. That was a huge battery drain for me.

So last night I
1. Got rid of task killers
2. Updated Serendipity from 5.3 to 5.5
3. Adjusted wireless settings
4. Calibrated battery
I finished all this at 8:15pm CST and the phone has been unplugged since then, with moderate use between 8:15 and 10:15pm. It is now 7am CST and the phone is at 63% power which is a huge improvement from yesterday.
I am convinced it was the task killers that had the most drain on the battery.
I will give it one or two more days and see how performance is then and let you know.

Back on Serendipity 4.3, while OC/UVing I could get about 25-28 hours with normal use, texting throughout the day, occasional calls.
Now that I'm on 5.5, I am getting about 28-32 hours, still OC/UVing.
Also, I use advanced task manager, and it doesn't kill my battery at all. Any more than other apps at least.

so I went 22 hours on one charge, now that's the initial charge of calibration. It's plugged in now we will see how it fares going forward.

battery issues

Im sure we had posts like this before. But Im stuck and need help. I was on cm7 nightly 87 with oc kernel. 5/23 and all was well. The this Saturday after playing pvz before going to sleep I put my nook to sleep with approximately 40-50% on battery and in the AM it was dead. I tought maybe I was wrong with the battery charged it to 100% flashed to 93 updated the kernel to 5-23 and played around with nook a bit, battery recolabration app, screen reco etc... Went to sleep approximately 70-80% woke up in the AM 44% just now typing this on nook went from 44 to 39% battery use shows android os 49%
I do play with new apps and maybe installed something bad but I can't figure it out. Please help

Thanks have to research that. Why would this just start ? It was working very good before. Thank you very much for the very fast response.

The latest nightlies (91, 93, and 94A) have an experimental fix that seems to improve things.

Yes I installed the latest nightly and left the nook over night. I left it at approximately 11pm with around 75%-80% this morning at 7am it drop down to 57%.
What I dont understand is that I didnt have this issue for a about a week that I had the nook and had the 87 nightly on it. The battery was amazing. It just kind of happen. I will start posting in the PMD thread this is very strange. Just seems that around 30% of battery disappears if nook is a sleep for a while.

No Drain - No Pain
I'm running version 88 and have virtually no drain whatsoever. I use an app killer and shut off the wifi before shutting down each night but can have less than 1-2% drop by morning. I can go a week without recharging.

Log battery stats
CurrentWidget, available in the market, is capable to log battery voltage, percent, current, and running applications list, to a file. It is also a home screen widget. Select widget type=clear text. Edit widget and change presentation to 2 column style. With these two changes all information is shown clearly. Wow thanks have to try this. Also will try shutting off the wifi before sleep. The issues is that I had no problems prior to Saturday, it was working flawless I would get no battery drain I would go to sleep with WiFi on no killing apps and get approximately same battery as when I went to sleep it was great. I dont get what happened.
Also like I said before in about tablet > battery use the "Android OS" now shows 41% when the battery gets drained. So some thing happens. I guess I can wipe /system /data and start over. I flashed the latest nightly this morning while the battery was on 55% (this is drain over night, as before sleep it was 77%). Lets see how it goes. And I was so happy how this thing performed !!!!!!

It was when you flash from n87 to n93 is the reason your battery is showing such different charges. the reason your are battery is draining so fast is because your nook is not deep sleeping. you can check to see if your cpu is deep sleeping or not with a free app named "cpu spy" Im also suffering from SOD and no DS.
There are 3 battery issues right now with the nook.

I was still on 87 when the issue first occurred. Now I understand everything you posted and will be more then happy to fill it out and etc.. what I dont understand is how come this worked before with out any issues, with no modifications

Also I never got Sleep of Death, I just got home and I`m about down to 21% from this morning 57% which is approximately 10 hours, there was some use today. I installed the cpuspy and current widget.
Cpu spy does show deep sleep 20%. I just put it on the charger and will take it of today. I did put all levers down in Nook Tweaks.
Lets see what happens. Now will report in the AM.

When I look at the battery usage, it showed
Phone Idle used 29%
Display 28%
Cell Standby 22%
Data enabled was turned on in Mobile network Settings. I turned that off and will check again. What would be using that if there is no hardware?

I had those turned off as soon as I installed CM7 few weeks ago

I've heard it explained thusly:
Phone idle = device idle
Cell standby = radio standby
Disabling those functions does nothing to increase battery life, as reported by kernel devs, though many users report otherwise anecdotally.

Had you by any chance just rebooted the NC before looking at those stats? The only time I've seen stats that high for those processes is right after powering the NC on. At that point, you're only seeing usage statistics for the last thirty seconds, and like any statistic, the smaller the sample size, the less meaningful the data.

I was in a reboot cycle where the unit would not power on without being on the charger.
I just checked again after installing build 95 and at the top of the screen it says 15 hours 50 minutes on battery. The percentages are still the same as before.

Ok here is my report from this AM. Took it of the charger last night at around 10:45pm with 100%, rebooted in to recovery to clear battery stats, rebooted to CM7 went to wireless enabled the wifi, deleted 1 wifi network (more on that below), made sure it was connected to my home network. Pretty much it. Battery showed 99%. Woke up just now 7am, battery shows 98%. Great.
So here are my thoughts and I think I have to experiment a bit more before conclusions.
1. Nook Tweaks with DAC boost could be causing an issue, maybe a better idea to do on demand rather then set on boot (still have to experiment.)
2. (this is most likely one) I live in Long Island and we have free wifi from Optimum (cablevision) from my house there is a week signal for that SSID and some times Nook did get on it instead of the home SSID. I suspect that it was jumping between SSID and thus draining the battery, this is why I deleted that network before going to sleep.
3. N95 fixed everything that was wrong.
4. I changed wifi to sleep after screen is off, that could of helped as well.
More testing will be done in coming days.
I do have a question regarding the OC kernel and governance. I do remember having 4 options, but now I just have to 2, performance and conservative. First question which one to use ? Second question where are the 4 governance ? Why arent they showing up ?

I'm on n98 with the 5/23 OC kernel (I believe). I always make sure minimal apps are running, I only have the wifi/sound/bluetooth toggle widgets. Screen brightness kept to minimum needed for visibility.
I charged up to 100% at about 6pm. Put it right to sleep (no wifi or anything running) and within 10 minutes it was down to 98%. I read for about 30 minutes using Aldiko before I went to sleep and for 20 minutes on the train to work. I pulled out the Nook on my lunch break to read some more and it was down to 59%, and that is just sleeping and reading (on low brightness) for about an hour.
I always have ample opportunity to charge wherever I am, but I'm just paranoid about battery life not lasting at all even when I'm barely using the thing.
I was set to OC @ 1100Mhz on Conservative but I knocked it down to 800. I don't know if that makes a difference.
Should I go back to an older version? Go to stock ROM? I'm really only going to use the Nook to read and watch Netflix on the train, or browse some websites on my lunch break. Nothing too heavy.

Hello guys I'm a newbie here so please do explain to me some of the stuff if you need to
so recently (about 2 weeks ago) I used this guide to root my Incredible S and did everything except the Blackrose part
and since then
I've noticed that my phone has drained its battery a lot quicker than usual
I lost 11% of battery when I woke up, fully charging it the night before
I usually do not use it much, only a call every 2 days or so, and I do not have internet connection
so I cannot understand how I have to charge it every day now, when it used to last 4 days (on Sense)

with steep drops in battery whenever there is "Mobile network signal"
and next to no drop whatsoever when there isn't

Battery drain has already been discussed much in the CM10.1 thread. Its been discussed in practically every AOSP thread really.

I know and I've tried to look around for answers for quite a few days
but for most people
it's either the same as Sense or something else (too many apps, not charging fully...)
and for those with similar conditions
I can't find solutions for
and the problem got worse today
in the 7 hours I slept yesterday
the battery drained from more than 50% to nothing
so the alarm didn't ring because it shut itself off

The standard charging time isnt what it says on the box or anything. It should be roughly 6 hours from 0% to 100% and thats providing you plug it into an AC outlet. I would suggest trying an app called Greenify. It hibernates certain apps/ services that may not be in use thus saving battery. I would also regularly check the Running Apps in settings and clear out anything unecessary.

I already installed that when I looked over the battery saving guide (which didn't help)
I literally have 5 apps in the Running Apps section
the part I don't get is
why does Cyanogenmod 10.1 use battery so much quicker than Sense
when I have 1/4 the apps I originally did?
it's the "No Data Connection" and "No or Unknown Signal" part really bothers me.

Hmm then this battery drainage is strange. Try making a full backup in recovery. Then clean flash the ROM again. If the problem still persists, then I have absolutely no idea whats wrong lol

I tried that...
on Sunday afternoon I reflashed it
my exact steps:
1. ClockworkMod backup
2. Install from zip
3. Advanced restore - data (I restored the whole thing too once before that, but thought that just restoring the data might actually change something)
and that's when it went from 50% to 0 overnight
not looking too good -.-

Drained 56% of my battery while I was asleep yesterday (for about 7 hours)
only 6% in the time I was at school, because of Airplane mode (I even listened to music and played a little Doodle Jump)
but I obviously want a phone to CALL PEOPLE
so I'm reverting to stock Rom

Ensure to charge your mobile fully and after a NORMAL usage (calls, WiFi, Mobile Data on).
Just share the dump file from betterbatterystats. It would help to analyse better.
Edit:
Could notice you are using some widgets in the home screen. Usually widgets with high refresh rate drains your battery.
2. Facebook app is causing the partial wakelock. Even when the screen is off, the app is using your CPU. Try to disable autosync if it's enabled
3. Audio_out3 wakelock is due to phone vibrator is enabled. May be during call or keyboard haptic feature.
Power manager service wakelock is common and its in good level.
Try to check your CPU freq n governor.
And adjust accordingly. One more, Li-on battery should not be charged fully. Just charge till 85-90%. The battery will drain little lower compared to fully charged device. And you need to charge your device only when battery is low. Frequent charging n discharging will affect the battery life. Consistent Charge and discharge cycle is encouraged.
Try to share your fresh dump here or in batter battery status thread. There are many folks to help you with.

My widgets (aka weather & tasks) only refresh manually, and nothing is on Autosync (in the auto sync menu, anyways)
originally had only vibration for calls, turned that off too now
and what is "CPU freq n governor"?
didn't know that about the batteries
I'll do that next time
and I just reinstalled betterbatterystats, so I'll post the Dump File after a few hours

I mean CPU frequency steps and CPU governor. It's a kernel thing. Just search xda, you will lot of info regarding that.
