Does anyone know if Google is planning on actually eventually using the GPU to accelerate the UI? Looking at Iphones, I get jealous of the super smooth scrolling and can't help but be annoyed by horrible flash scrolling. Thanks for the Flash Google, but please actually USE the hardware I paid so much for!
I'm using ADW Launcher and my scrolling is perfectly smooth.
Adequate launcher is really smooth

same here. adw is smoother then ever.
I hear what your saying. running cm 6 froyo, with flash, stable jit.... can't think of another mobile o.s. that I rather be running. ecspecially on my nexus

Well... If youre using the Stock-ROM with Stock-Launcher i believe thats not super-smooth.
Iam using CM6 with LauncherPro and just like the Guy above me wrote: I've never seen a phone which is faster and smoother like this. Just today a good friend of me with iP4 was impressed about this.
I think he's talking about all scrolling, with which I agree, something may be doable about it. Not sure where one would go about to do that though,
Smooth
Yeah I'm using Launcher Pro which works fine, but scrolling webpages...and sometimes pulling up menus and yes...even launcher pro sometimes doesn't scroll so smoothly with a live wallpaper. It just seems silly to have our main cpu doing all this work when the gpu is just sitting there. PS. if you think the nexus scrolling is smooth go look at the scrolling on an Iphone, it is a thing to behold.
dude i had an iphone... the sensitivity of the scrolling on there is not as smooth as adw launcher with scrolling settings jacked up and o'cd so ... stf ^ and go away ... u iphone n00b.

This is why nobody likes you. I've used iPhones, they scroll better
Anyway, launcherpro is very smooth. I thing android phones should be a lot smoother though in stock form. I understand relying on 3rd party development to a point. But scrolling should have been taken care of by android. But android puts stuff out fast then works on it, as long as they intend to improve it that's all I ask.
lol.. iphone hater.. personally i like both.. i prefer iphone games, music/video player, keyboard but i prefer the freedom of android..
i was thinking of galaxy S.. damm it is so much cheaper then when i got my Nexus one.. maybe i should swap for it..
I'm not just talking about home screen scrolling, I'm talking about ALL menus, web browsing, the app drawer, etc. You need to calm down and admit that having a gpu and not using it for rendering graphics is stupid. I love android and my nexus, that's why I have it INSTEAD of an Iphone, just looking for some asthetic improvments.
That's one thing Apple is good with for sure...Eye Candy.

Any updates? Is gingerbread supposed to implement a GPU accelerated UI?
And from all places, what makes you think that here you'll find an official answer, when there are no Gingerbread highlights available to the public yet?
Sometimes I'm amazed by the easiness with which people press the "Post" button, just to avoid actually doing something to find out the answer to their question.
What a clown
Do you really need to respond like that? Really? What does that accomplish? I did a quick google search for gingerbread updates and came up empty regarding this topic. PERHAPS it was mentioned in an OLDER gingerbread article somewhere that isn't so easily accessible. Geez...if you don't want to respond...don't, but don't a douche about it either. After all, this is a message board...ya know...where people talk about STUFF...even roomered stuff!

Try Opera Mobile (not mini) for smoother web scrolling. It's not hardware accelerated yet, but it zooms and scrolls an order of magnitude smoother than the stock browser. It will get hardware acceleration soon, as that is one of their key advertised features. The next beta of Firefox Mobile will have it as well.
There was a rumor a while back that 3.0 (which at the time was thought to be Gingerbread, before we found out 2.3 would be Gingerbread, that there would be a hardware accelerated UI. The basis of this rumor was that the next UX would be similar to that of the Gallery 3D appilcation.
The reason you came up empty is because there are no Gingerbread specs available, not even highlights. You know, it's Google behind the OS, if you run a search for specs and you see no official info - means there is none.
And perhaps the reason for reacting like that is that this thread is "only" no.23947659234 Gingerbread thread, while there is absolutely no real information available, and it gets really annoying that the forum is full of speculations and misinformation.

Stop being jerks guys.
Honestly, GPU Acceleration would be fantastic...although CM is doing a great job making the N1 very smooth (and probably other ROMs and kernels) it would still be nice to have such a feature...even just to show off to my iPhone 4 friends haha
Will spb work on the xoom?
That would be sweet!!

No, it says "device not supported" after it flashes the desktop for a second.
Looks good for that split second though.

Despite the missing options (which I'm sure will come eventually) I loved it on my thunder bolt. I had to uninstall though as it was raping my already fragile battery.
Looking forward to running it on my xoom though and hopefully my tbolt again if they can make it suck less juice.

Thanks, I will probably reconsider the purchase. Love the bolt but the battery could be better.
Did you guys not install it from the market, or did you just ignore the release notes? It states that tablets aren't supported.
Thats wierd. I see no changes in battery life with SPB launcher on my NexusS running CM7 rom.

I have SPB shell for my DroidX and I can verify that it does not install on my Xoom. I tried side loading and adb install and both times the installation failed. I think the 3D shell would look great on the Xoom but overall, I find the functionality pretty poor compared to the free launchers out there. I bought it on an impulse and I'll keep it in case a tablet version is released but once you start to configure it, it really is lacking in functionality.
It seems to be working on mine...
I didn't install from the market and I will send the apk if you want.
I loaded it on my N1 last night and it promptly quit working after it couldn't find a market purchase, so disable all data before installing the apk. Supposedly the app checks the market every hour until it can confirm a receipt, and I heard there is a command line you can send via adb to disable it from further checking, but I haven't seen it yet.
I heard that it is horrible. Lags and no scrollable widgets?
The widgets worked fine for me, but the graphics sucked ass. It just doesn't flow as smoothly as I wanted. Even SPB MS 3.5 on my Rhodium is smoother!
yeah I just tried the newer version on my zoom and it does work. Not very good though. Wallpaper is horribly pixelated as are the Widgets. Animations aren't smooth and no landscape amongst other issues. Hopefully they release a honeycomb version at some point.
Well let's see if their Tablet UI concept materializes in the not too distant future.
Now this is something I may pay for.

Damn that's awesome. The pinching home screen would be real slick!
It looked slick over a year ago for Android Phones (the one just released) as well and it does not seem to deliver. It is easy to make an animation of what you would like something to be. Not trying to be negative but I have already seen this before with the Android Phones version long ago. I used SPB Mobile shell on Windows Mobile and it was awesome. But I do not think they are getting it with Android.
Thread cleaned up. Please do not advocate or ask for warez, or it will result in an infraction or ban. Thank you,

did anybody got this working on they tablet, i going crazy to get it on my phone there is the tablet option.
SPB on Xoom
I purchased 1.5.1 for my HTC Desire, and, of course, attempted to install on my Xoom. No go. Install worked fine, but wouldn't home switch.
I had, however, previously installed a 1.2.?, and it worked great, until I had to hit home button again, in which case it wouldn't allow me to select SPB as my launcher. I have to say, the outlay was fantastic, along with the eye candy and the overall slickness of it. It was great.
I REALLY hope they mod this for the tablets!
I can't remember how I got this to work but it wasn't easy and it looked lame... has to be default launcher.. prepare for some soft bricks.

Yes, it works beautifully. To use it you have to have it on phone first, backup app in astro, and then put the apk on your Xoom. The latest version (1.5.1) works more smoothly than stock.

I have to say, my experience so far with getting my NC up and running with CM7 has been very positive so far. I'm running it from the SD and OC @ 1.1ghz. Just a great experience all around. I'm still considering a Xoom somewhere down the road but no rush now.
I wasn't going to buy it as I had a Kindle but I have to say, this really has so much more potential, I just couldn't say no.
Anyways, just wanted to pass along my positive experience and look forward to learning a bunch more from all the smart people around here.
I'm gonna add a question here as I don't want to make another thread.
One thing I'm slightly frustrated with, and really it's very minor, I have some difficulty with swiping through menus and accidentally selecting whatever happens to be at the location I start my swipe.
For example: When I'm scrolling through a web page, I'll press somewhere close to the bottom and drag up to scroll down the page. For some reason, this typically will launch a link if that happens to be around where my finger touches the screen initially. Or if I'm in 'Settings' and scrolling through the screen to go further down, this usually opens a misc option or checks/unchecks a box, etc. I don't know what else to do but is there a setting or something that will stall the OS from reacting so quickly?
If I click and hold, then drag, it seems to work ok. But this is something that's not really natural to me. I'll say now that I've used an iPhone and iPad and never had this type of quirky/touchy response. Is it just me?
Yea BN missed the boat. They could if given it full aosp android and probbley spent less software development money and charged more money.

Interesting... I never thought about that. If I may ask, where did you get it and how much was it? Does it take away much from the image quality?

I use the stock 1.2 without any type of modifications. I haven't found the need to do much to it as it runs pretty smooth. Although I maybe only run that mode 10% of the time, if that...

I picked up an anti-glare screen protector on Amazon.com, but I can't remember which one it was. I bought it mainly to just protect the screen from scratches, but it really cuts the glare and doesn't show fingerprints as easily as the bare screen.
It doesn't degrade image quality at all, although I bumped up the screen's brightness just a hair to compensate.

IDK, the stock interface is accessible for the computer-illiterate and the hardware configuration is equally accessible for all levels of power-users. I pretty much forgive all shortcomings in the stock OS because B&N made no effort to lock me into using it, aside from withholding the magazine and kids book functionality in their Android Market app.

I don't know about how everyone else feels, but I cannot use the swiping feature of Swype on the Aria. It's just too small for me to see what letter I'm covering up with my finger.
Also - when I use my left hand to "swype" and need to enter letters normally my right hand types, I slow down considerably.
In short - for me, Swype fails because of the way I typically type.
I can see this working better for larger screen devices or for people who have always used just one hand to type. But I find swyping very slow.
Just wondering how you all get around it (maybe use in landscape mode?)...
I have a Legend, (very, very, very similar in specs to the Aria), and I find Swyping in portrait works like a charm. Sure, it's a bit slow, but what can a little overclock not fix ;-)
I also find that Swyping in landscape is very inaccurate for me, probably because the prediction engines are adjusted for landscape use.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
I have gotten so used to swype that's all I can use now. Get the "real" swype's from their website, not the fake pirated ones.
I have seen people swype in landscape and that just seems odd to me. swype was made to be fast turning you phone over every time to type is not fast, and I know a guy that has an htc evo and swypes in landscape? the keys are in different spots in landscape, so if your used to portrait you will have a hard time swpying.
So I just downloaded the latest Swype and I have to say its fun, quick, and pretty accurate. I just wish it had more options like getting rid of voice and Swype help button to make the space bar bigger. also it would be cool if you had more customizing options. Other than that its definitely worth trying out.
Swype.....not skype. Duh
I stopped using Swype for smart keyboard pro a few months ago but went ahead and gave the new Swype a try and all I can say is WOW! It has improved so much. Its 100 times more accurate than the previous versions.
To Dan: it takes a little getting used to but after a while it becomes muscle memory with the
letter placement to where you don't need to see the letters your finger is blocking and your finger just knows where to go. Until you can Swype without thinking about where the next letter is it will never be as fast as the two thumb approach. Even then, using two thumbs might still be faster. But for 'one handed' typing you really can't beat Swyping once you're used to it. I also highly recommend the tutorials on their website. Might sound silly but after using the tutorials my Swyping speed improved very noticeably. There's a lot of neat little tricks you might not otherwise ever know existed on the Swype keyboard.

My favorite new feature is definitely the keyboard
S'ok
Like = Gesture Typing, new settings drop down - Epic!
Not Sure = WIDI - This could be cool as no MHL on my Nexus 7 but not tried yet and possibly expensive
Don't Like = New lockscreen - Just looks nasty and feels slow and pointless
Love it! It the best Android experience yet! IMO

If I don't go away this weekend I will have a chance to install it. I almost did it yesterday but was so tired. I definitely want to try it though. I know I'll miss AOKP.
The only thing I like is the gesture typing. My nexus 7 has seemed much slower since the update and I hate the dual drop down menus.

Swipe typing is really nice, animations on the app switcher look pretty cool. But does feel a touch sluggish on general use. Plus Bluetooth audio is screwed up, audio keeps stuttering really badly. Notifications seems half a step backward to me, but not something I'm overly bothered about
It's ok besides these issues that are really getting me frustrated. Can't get old pics to show in Gallery, even though they are there and are in the same file location that pics taken with 4.2 are. Pics taken on 4.2 show in Gallery show in Gallery...? Can't find the newest TWRP backup in file explorer, but it shows in TWRP. Total opposite for old backups.....they show in file explorer, but not in TWRP?
Oh...the USB-debugging hidden thing had me mad at first, but now think it was kinda funny.
It is a SMALL update, very small.
I don't care about the keyboard, since I don't use dictionary (not possible with slavic languages, and I use TWO).
I don;t particulary like new notifications/settings pulldown. It is ugly and extends over the edge f the screen, even if empty.
I don't like new lock screen. I prefer to have weather icon on it than stupid widgets which might provide private data before UNLOCK
I have a feeling it is slower, only slightly, though, than 4.1.2
Several apps don't work, including my favorite TSF Shell
"Blink to logon" is a good idea, but I have glasses and it doesn't work very well for me
So, all in all, a HUGE FAIL.
Thanx god it is a small update, who knows what Google would manage to f*ck up in MAJOR update....
My only issue is that the quick settings notification area aren't actual toggles as opposed to shortcuts to settings. But overall happy.

4.2 is just preparing us for 5.0 and you could tell in the new clock app.I think they are going to change the color scheme to red. The camera icon is also different and in 5.0 there will be more changes. For now we are basically beta testers of an early build of 5.0
4.2 is very smooth though
4.2 seems to work pretty well. Smooth and relatively trouble free so far.
Went all the way back to stock/unrooted/locked

Flashed 4.2
Unlocked/rooted applied 720p video patch
All is smooth
