[Q] rooting without sd - Nook Color General

I've looked around and can't seem to find anything. Is there a method to rooting without using an SD card? thanks.

Nope. You have to have an SDcard to root/load custom ROMs on the NC.
It loads off of the SDcard before loading the eMMC. That is why. You can pick them up Über cheap on Amazon.com or MicroCenter.com.

Switching SD Cards

Hello everyone,
I am new to the hero and just rooted my phone using kitchen. I wanted to get an 8GB card and wanted to know what the process was. I didn't want to mess anything up so how do I change micro sd cards. I did a search but was unable to find the answer.
Are you using apps 2 sd?
If yes there is a guide
If no, then copy your data to your pc.. unmount the card(or turn the phone off) .. insert new card, format... then copy stuff back.
cool, never used apps 2 sd. Thanks! Will wait to get a new rom after.
Just remember its a mounted filesystem, if you just took it out that would be like unhooking your computer's hard drive. Probably going corrupt some data.
So just make sure the phone is off before switching cards?
i just made that mistake last night, burnt up an 8gb card, make sure phone is off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't need to turn the phone off. Right in SD Card and Storage Settings, there's a button to unmount the SD card. Hit that button, eject the card, then put the new one in and copy all the data back on via USB.

You shouldn't have been able to burn a card doing that. Maybe confuse the filesystem on it. If worse comes to worst, reformat the sdcard.
What items on the SD card are necessary? I did the root and there are two recovery images on there. I haven't done anything else besides rooting the phone.
Sorry dumb question, rooting doesn't change when changing cards right?
Since there is an SDcard discussion. Every time I play music the songs glitch at the beginning of the track and sometimes mid song..but always at the start UNLESS the phone is awake, then it plays fine.
Could it be the class of the card or that the phone wakes up after the end of every track and glitches? I still have the stock 2 gig card and was looking to get a higher class / more capacity to swap if that is the case. if not I'll just stick to my ipod shuffle.. bleh.

Nothing on the SD card is strictly necessary. Rooting and applying ROMs does not affect the SD card.

Necessary? Nothing. The phone should run without the sdcard even installed. Some applications aren't going to like it not being there, like the camera.
New card partition question

No and no.
You only need to partition the card if you want it partitioned and partitioning it has zero to do with rooting or with applying a new ROM.

Why is the Nook Color so different?

I just ordered a Nook Color from eBay with the $50 off... happy yes I am!
I've been with Android since the G1, now I have a droid... how come flashing ROMS and SD cards are so different? You have to put it internally on the Nook instead of on the SD card? Flashing off SD card causes problems? CWR doesn't work? Can anyone explain? It seems much tougher than my droid, just putting the file on my sd card then going to recovery and hitting update, or same with the gTab or Adam.
Unlike most phones, flashing a majority of ROMs (not all) for the NC wipes the Recovery -- ie, wipes it off the device.
So you create a Recovery SD card (the NC auto-boots into it) and then flash ROMs just like you would for a phone. Then take out the SD card when done with Recovery.
It wipes only the recovery correct? Not anything on the sd card? Ill search up how to make partition for recovery sd. Thanks.

Yeah, it'll wipe everything on the NC only, and not touch the SD card.
Here's the thread for creating a 3.0.0.6 Recovery SD Card (needed for CM7 Gingerbread ROM):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959240
See post #19 for detailed instructions.
For FroYo I believe you need to use 3.0.0.5, found elsewhere.
just ordered my NC off ebay too. i'm reading up all i can as fast as i can. coming from an evo where wiping is too easy, this is going to be a bit more complicated, i can't wait!!!
More complicated, maybe, but also much safer since you basically cannot brick an NC... No matter how badly you screw up the internal flash, you can always boot from SD to fix things.
I bought 3 Nook Colors yesterday and rooted every one of them and installed HoneyComb on one, all in less that 2 hours start to finish including downloading images and making the SD card. I made one SD card with CWR with images for the stock ROM, CyanogenMod 7 and HC eMMC v4. It all works flawlessly. This thing really is simple to manipulate. I had more trouble making a gold card and rooting my HTC Inspire!
Well I want to chime in on this too now because I'm new to this as well. What are the advantages/disadvantages of nookie froyo on the sd card vs flashing a rom to the internal?

well sd cards are slow and internal memory(eemc) is fast
if you install froyo/cm7/HC on your eemc it will run much faster vs running from sd card, running from sd card is good though if you want to try out a rom without losing your current setup

brand new nook color root?

Hi guys, I just got a new color and want to root it. Ive read and it gets a little confusing and Im wondering where I can find full instructions or maybe even a video on how to fully root it. I have the new version 1.3.0. Also, what is the best rom to use right now? Thanks.
Do you want the the internal system or use a MicroSD card to accomplish it?
I have done 4 Nooks using the uSD card and it has worked very well.
I just did this last night, and there is a very simple tutorial here
(hope its ok to post this link)
http://icrontic.com/discussion/93234/how-to-root-a-nook-color-install-cyanogenmod-7-and-overclock-it
I did everything they said, and it went smoothly. Now I have an awesome "tablet"!
Thanks. I am writing the image file now. When all is said and done, do I have to worry about OTA updates from Barnes and Nobel and if so what can I do to prevent them???
I rooted my daughters nook tablet and had to go through the process of blocking updates from barnes and nobel because it was preventing her from installing apps other than from barnes and nobel. Just wondering if the color will be the same since this is a full root.

This guide says to use a Nook Color with 1.2. Will it work with one that is running 1.3?
Yes, I have 1.3 and used this method posted above and I am now running Cyanogenmod 7.2. Looks reat! Now I need to find out about updates........
32GB SD
So if I purchase a 32GB SD card can I use the left over storage on the SD card after rooting? Also, I thought I heard that a class 4 SD card is the best to get. Anything slower, may cause issues. Is that correct as well? My new nook is on tha way and I am getting ready to root it.
Thanks in advance.
You should use a class 4 Sandisk card.. even faster cards of other brands do not work as well.

1. Yes
2. Anything other than a Sandisk is going to cause issues.

One last newbie question. So if I have a 4GB SD card formatted to boot with WinDiskImager, can I use that to back up my original nook 1.3 image before I root it? Then copy the CM7 and google apps zip files to it and use that to root it? Once rooted place a blank 32GB SD card it in for storage use? Then I can keep my 4GB SD card as a backup and also us it for root updates? Am I on the right track.
Thanks in advance, this thread has been helpful!

Dual boot without SC card?

I recently updated my Nook with dual boot from the SD card but I find that it locks up a lot and it very slow. I figure it is probably the brand of SD card I am using but now I am wondering if I really want the original Nook software in it at all. Is it possible to dual boot without using a SD with two exact CM7 Roms, one with all my info and one with my wifes?

Yes, it's possible, but I don't recommend it. There are old threads that will tell you how to do it. I recommend against because to implement you must repartition emmc and that is risky. And you will have problems in the future if you want to update the ROM on the second system.
I recommend putting one system on emmc and another on a quality SD using the verygreen system. That's what I run and it works great.

OK thanks for the info. For now I have CM7 on the Nook and it runs 100 times better than when I had it on the SD card.

With a good SD card it should run just as well as it does on internal. San Disk class 4 tend to work the best as bootable SD cards.
I tried to post a link to the card that I want to buy but I dont have enough posts

Just get a San Disk and that will take care of any potential card issues. This is the best possible way to avoid any potential issues with running a bootable SD

[Q] A few questions on what is going on

So I purchased a nook hd+ on ebay, and I've been reading around am just look for some straight answers before I take a dive.
I want a little understanding of what it is going on.
Is what is being run aosp android, like cm10 or are people just running gapps in the stock b&n os?
Can whatever things are being run have no other choice but to run on an sd card, or can they run from the internal memory?

You currently have two choices, run CM10 or CM10.1 on SD or run stock on internal either virgin or modified for root or gapps or other mods. We cannot run another ROM on internal memory yet.

So I can't root or use CM10(.1) unit I get an SD card is what I'm understanding right?
And has anyone confirmed you can use a 64gb sandisk uhs-1 card for this?

You are understanding it right. SD is necessary to root and SD is necessary if you want CM10. Some have said those SDs are ok. To root it can be any card, even a 1GB card.

I waited for an SD card to come over the weekend and I was finally able to add GApps to stock.
I've been liking the experience so far, but I was wondering how multitasking works on stock.
The stock launcher doesn't seem recognize apps from the play store.
Is there a different way to switch and/or close apps?

The zeam launcher came with gapps (rev1) so that can be used to; launch the apps added with play store. And there are other apps that let you see recent apps. Like recents plus.
