I've just tested the WiiMote, and I can tell you - no, they don't work. Damn manufacturers modifying their BT stacks to left and right... :-(
Will probably root my phone and test that other WiiMote app that requires root. I'm hopeful for it working. Our phones is the perfect "gaming console" for retro gaming if so ;-)
Oh, what is the Root-requiring app? I've not come accross it...
*off to Google to find out*
EDIT: Ah, found it, still doesn't offer HTC/Samsung support. Shame.
Correction: Lg‘s screwed their bt stack so hard that third party software can‘t use it. its barely usable with sony ericsson liveview

so... when (im in no doubt) we get say Cm or modaco rom could we use a wii mote or bt keyboard or will it still be " locked down"??
It'll work with CM, but I don't think Paul's Modaco ROMS usually change the BT stack, so I wouldn't expect it to work there.
Call lg support regarding this they said that they hadnt heard of the issue yet. The more of us that alert them of this ****ty nonstandard bluetooth the more likely they are too fix it. When i told them how other phones with the same broadcom chip had been "fixed" with third party roms they escalated my ticket. Also please remind them that the hardware is capable of usb on the go and software that supports it is an edge in the market in theese hd days.

I've sent them an email regarding this problem. I'll call them tomorrow too...
We need proper BT drivers!
both bluez ime and gamepro in combination with a zeemote bluetooth controller work fine.
so it's not entirely impossible to work with the optimus 2x bluetooth.
The problem is that the drivers deny low level access to the hw
Btw nice to know other people keep telling lg to fix this

a newb question I guess but I havent got an Android phone yet, this phone will be in my ownage in a couple of weeks :happypanda:
wont this work with this rom? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1014929
@hobs0n: No, won't work
After talking to LG it doesn't really sound they care...
Ah shabby So the only ones that can change the BT stack/drivers are the manufacturer for the phone? like LG, HTC and so on? Does the WII controllers work for other Android phones??
Does anyone have a BGP100-gamepad and knows if that works on our Optimus 2x? As Wiimotes don't work, maybe that gamepad would be usefull... at least with a SNES-gamepad mod it would be perfect for the SNES emu.
Not the BGP-100, but the Zeemote BT Gamepad.
Both are running only with GamePro driver.
The driver freezed while trying to connect with the gamepad.
Even my BT mini keyboard doesn‘t work.
Both were running fine with the Galaxy S.
So at this time there is no way to connect gaming hardware.
And if anyone is thinking about PS3 controller. No it doesn‘t work.
The new GamePro driver is working fine with Zeemote JS1
And has support for further Gamepads:
- iControlPad
- Act Labs Gamepad
The iControlPad is to expensive, but does anyone know the Act Lab Gamepad ?
This is just sad.. !
So there is now way we can hack in a proper USB driver? or do we have to w8 for LG to release one?
I really doubt that LG will release it. After talking to them it doesn't seem they care about the problem at all...
Is this something that might be different on the more stock G2x?

OK, granted I don't know much but maybe this thread can group peoples Ideas on a suitable controller for the captivate.
I know the WII Controller app currently doesn't work for us, but we do see that the controller hardware does offer the opportunity to pair with the phone over bluetooth.
I guess the first step is to successfully get the pairing, is this possible somehow? would a successful password hack make it happen?
I guess second would be to have it recognize buttons in a keyboard fashion to work with most emulators.
I know the developer of the existing wii controller app has said we probably get his app working, and I don't blame hime for not trying to get every phone to work, but i feel there is enough talent here to maybe get our own solution?
Or, if anyone actually has a better solution to the hope for an external controller, please help us all!
Wait the WII app does not work for us? I was about to hit BB :-(
Unfortunately the test app didn't work for me, and the developer has the captivate on the list of phones that currently are not compatible and most likely will not be compatible in the future with his software.
Ouch :-(
Not good news but better than me buying the wiimote for nothing.
I am assume is a matter of time before someone comes up with one anyway
Has anybody tried pairing a Playstation 3 controller with the phone? PS3 + HDMI via USB cable would make a great portable gaming console for when out of town at family, etc.
I'd definately contribute cash towards getting a working driver if needed.
EDIT: Also, MSI has a bluetooth gamepad that works with the phone. Google MSI BGP100. My biggest complaint/concern is that the controller doesn't seem to be designed to accommodate a phone in landscape mode, so that's a bit of a drawn back for playing games on the go (as opposed to hooking it up to a TV or monitor, where it wouldn't be an issue).
I actually emailed the dev about future compatibility for our phones, he said it's samsungs proprietary bluetooth drivers that are incompatible with the wiimote.
If we were to flash a vanilla android rom or something, it would work just fine.

EDIT:
"Hello,
thank you for your question.
You're right about the frequency of these kind of requests. Newer Samsung phones unfortunately use proprietary bluetooth stacks (developed by Samsung) instead of the default that is in Android, named Bluez. That proprietary stack doesn't support the type of connection that wiimotes need to connect.
So, the only way currently for you to have this app working is if you get rid of that bluetooth stack. If you want to, you can root and flash your phone with a custom ROM. "Vanilla" ROMs have had success with other non-compatible phones in the past. Vanilla just means a type of ROM that is made from code that originates directly from Google, not from Samsung. One known creator of good quality vanilla ROM is cyanogen from xda-developers.com, but I don't believe his ROMs can run on the Galaxy (yet).
A friendly word of caution: rooting and flashing probably voids your phone's warranty and you also loose all the data (like contacts, app settings, etc) so MAKE BACKUPS before doing anything.
Best regards,
Piki"

So has anybody confirmed if this works or not with the Captivate?
I'm thinking since the wiimote wont work via bluetooth, no bluetooth gamepad will work.
Has anyone ever tried interfacing a standard controller through the microUSB port? Or custom building such a device?

It depends on the drivers otherwise no bluetooth device will be able to connect...at least that is how I see it.
no that the psx emulator is out and resedent evil 3 works perfectly, i would like to see some kind of gamepad, sucks theres no way to use a controller.. , is there even anyone working on getting this done???
Just wondering if any updates have been made on any controllers working on the captivate? Still no WiiMote connectivity, havent tried to connect anything through the micro usb. If anybody knows of a way to control emulators for the Samsung Captivate, Let us all know!

vibrant roms work with a few known and easily fixed issues with button logic. there may be other issues i cant remember but it is doable. as long as the vibrant is getting attention it should be enough.
Actually, hold your breath...
The Cog Rom has been using the original bluez stack protocol needed, and I am hopeful of compatibility soon...
Nothing seems to work still yet for the wii controller apps yet, but I haven't tried again in the last couple versions.
At least it seems we are headed in the right direction!

Wouldn't be too sure about that since he removed bluez after version 5 saying it caused more trouble than it was worth. It would seem the only hope we have now is for gdanko's aosp froyo. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815420&page=18
Indeed it seems aosp is a gamer's only hope for our beloved captivate... we need the non samsung proprietary Bluetooth stack.

Never. Samsung used a proprietary bluetooth stack, not sure if it even has the right bluetooth profile to be used with a gamepad.
If you want to use a wii-mote you can try one of Designgears' "Roms" In some of them I think he has stripped out the samsung bluetooth stack and inserted a generic one called Bluez. I have not tried this yet, but am interested if his rom will work with the app in the market called "wiimote controller". I dont have a wiimote and dont feel like spending $35 just to see if it does indeed work.
But to answer your question in general, as long as you are running a stock Samsung Rom, wiimote will never work.

ME <------ = Sad Panda
So with all the advances in ROMs and overclocking etc, is there really no hope to ever get a controller to work with the Captivate?
I really dont understand. I can sync up my bluetooth keyboard just fine, so why can i not get a wiimote to work???
Please forgive my ignorance, I'm completely new to the Android world. Has anyone been able to root a tab to allow Wii controller access?
Searched multiple forums but could not find a definitive answer.
Thanks!
I've rooted mine, and actually thought about trying the wiimote app again. (I used it on my Nexus 1)
I'll give it a shot...
It doesn't work. I'm guessing for the same reason the Galaxy S phones won't work with it either, the bluetooth isn't compatible.
I confirm also that it doesn't work. I've tried 2 different wii controller apps. And my galaxy is rooted. It just won't sync.
Yeah I tried em both also. I'm sure the BT hardware is the same on the Tab and the SGS phones, and they don't work either. I was very disapointed when I couldn't use this after switching from my N1 to my Captivate.
10-4 thanks for giving it a shot.
One of the developers of one of the apps says it's to do with TouchWiz. Sounds more likely to be a software issue than a hardware blutooth issue, which means it could be fixed or hacked Hope!
similar issues on my T-Mobile tablet; I tried to connect a Wii controller to my tab and the wiimote app keeps telling me to enable bluetooth.
i can confirm it works well on archos 101 but not on tmo gtab
im hoping they patch this im looking forward to using it for gaming

Me to, with a hdmi out cable and a couple of wii controllers. The tab could be a neat little mini mobile gaming system. Hopefully with 2.3 or 3.0 we'll get that support. But then again I don't even know if the hardware can support a wiimote.

Anyone know of any other controller for android?
I also still waiting on some news.
Having brought Snes,Nes,Gba, psx emulators on my tab I dieing for some news.
I thought is was do to with the bluetooth stack used by Sammy?
Yes, I believe you are right about the bluetooth stack. I think our most likely option right now is to wait for the cyanogen roms to be completed for our tabs.

Would like this to happen also.
I poked around with the Wiimote and the Tab last night and it looks like L2CAP support is needed in the kernel before this will work. I haven't built a kernel for an android device yet, so I'll leave it to the chefs to build it in.

Yes Please do!
I hope we can alter what ever needs to be altered in order to uses a WiiMote with the Samsung Tab.
Seeing that the Dell streak 7 doesn't have Hdmi out, this tablet still really is my only chance of having real Gaming emulation on the go without adding much bulk!
So, I was curious about gamepads being connected to the Nexus 7.
I did a little research and found the sixaxis app, as well as usb/bt joystick center 6.
What I'm seeing is that there is a lot of commotion about not being able to use USB devices after the 4.2 update (which I'm on, but rooted and unlocked). Apparently the USB host is locked up tight in 4.2, for whatever reason.
Do any apps still work for using a controller as they did before? Is there a community made kernel or OS update that fixes this for the Nexus 7?
There's a ton of random complaining on the internet, about different devices not being able to use some of these apps recently, but I couldn't find any real info about what the real scoop is.
I'd mostly just like to connect a generic logitech game pad, or a pocket sized bluetooth keyboard, and use it for old NES emulated games, or some such. I don't really need anything fancy going on, but I've no idea if they work at all anymore, or what kind of app will do it after 4.2.

I think most of this is the cause from Google swapping Bluetooth stacks to a better one by it broke compatibility with apps that were wrote with the old stack in mind.
I'm not sure what the status is on this but it is just growing pains. Google isn't blocking or specifically dropping support. Just a newer stack and updates weren't as quick as people had hoped.
USB Host mode is built in to the latest Paranoid Android beta and he said it was pretty easy to get working.

I can't speak for the logitech game pad or the keyboard but sixaxis app (the one by Dancing Pixels) was updated recently and it works perfectly for me, as far as gamepads you can't go wrong with a standard PS3 controller.

Excellent news.
Thank you for summing it up!
It seems like a lot of people on the net are in the dark on this, so I'm glad to hear it's because Android moves at a (sometimes overly) fast pace and not because of a complete lock-down of sorts. I'll check out that ROM.

Is 360's wired pad only usb-gamepad which work with N7?
I finally got otg-cable and tried my two Logitech pc-pad(digital, and another with PS3-style sticks) but neither
one work in games. I can move in homescreen, but in games only "move"-work(digital/stick), but none of the
buttons work, they just doesn't do anything.
It is possible the games only detect the 360 controller. The only game I found that supported it natively was Sonic 4 Episode 2. I think it is the game that has to be able to detect/support it. I think there are some apps out there to assist with getting gamepads to work though.
i was thinking about the nyko game pad. ive seen some reviews of it . its pretty neat because it uses a bluetooth connection. im still not sure if nyko solves the riddle about this game pad stuff. can't help spending $30++ to bluetooth game pad that wont work as it was advertised..
Has anyone heard anything about HTC having the ability to have bluetooth HID connectivity with the newer version of 4.2 ?
I know it's not out just yet too.
It's something which has always been missing from sense phones and something i've always missed.
Even when an AOSP rom comes out which has the connectivity there, i always seem to miss sense and then cut my losses and gone back.
Any info would be great, rumours, official responses, anything.
Cheers.
EDIT: So sorry, posted in the wrong section, meh.
Please move mod, sorry
In theory they should do! If I can connect a wired controller via OTG cable, then why can't I with Bluetooth controllers? What if we use Bluetooth adapters?

Wired yea, but unfortunately not the same thing as bluetooth, and a fair point about the dongle, although you would need the relevant drivers and seeing as though it was difficult to get some BT dongles working on windows vista even when those dongle were made for windows (including XP) i see little hope for drivers being discovered let alone created for android.
The point is, HTC have always blocked the bluetooth HID part of their bluetooth stack and thus we cannot connect to things like the ps3 controller for six axis support,, just try wiimote or six axis and you'll see what i mean.
I find it ridiculous that the likes of the asus prime and the s3 can have this and we can't, just doesn't make sense, or maybe they've struck a deal not to?? i have no idea.
Another thing (which is off topic) the CRT animation has apparently been removed, just like it was on the One X.
Another thing i find confusing.
If anyone else has anything else to offer, i'd love to hear it.
Cheers.
