[Q] CM7 Wifi issues - Nook Color General

I'm running Cm7 nightly 19 and my wifi is acting funny. Its stays connected but after a while I don't get internet and the only way to solve it is to turn it wifi off and on again.
Did anyone face this? How do you work around it?

Have you tried turning the WIFI sleep policy to never sleep?
WIFI Settings>Advanced>WIFI Sleep Policy>Never

Ya but it didn't help!

i was having issues but builds 17+ have been much much better.
no fix that i'm aware of. you could try switching your security settings on the router.

I have seen this and have determined that it could be related to router type and or brand.
See this post.

I was having connection issues with 802.1x at one point - it would show it was connecting then just drop. I fixed it by replacing the wifi folder in /etc/.
Steps:
download the the wifi folder from dl.dropbox.com/u/3220557/wifi.zip
Unzip and Place it on your SD card.
Using Root Explorer, navigate to /etc/, select "mount R/W' and rename the current 'wifi' file 'wifiOLD or whatever you like.
Next, copy the new 'wifi' folder off your sd card and paste in /etc/.
Reboot the nook.
Hope this helps.

what exactly are you replacing with that new wifi folder? did this help others?

I've had problems with a friends nook and my router (mine, same CM7 build, works fine). I'd recommend trying what mndev12 said first, and if that doesn't work try turning off all encryption/security on your router and see if it still happens. From what I can gather here on the forums is that some people are having problems with different security configs.

This might help.
I had the same issue with my NC using a D-Link DIR-615 wireless router. I solved this issue by turning Wireless N off. I set mine to BG only. Works flawlessly. Hope this helps.

Another suggestion to folks with Wifi and router issues. Make sure your router has current/updated firmware running on it. I know we all get in the habbit of setting them up and just leaving them but the mfgs do in fact push out firmware updates from time to time that can and do make a world of difference in cases like these, specially on older routers

Did you get this issue resolved? If so, I am curious as to how... having similar issues myself. Have played with security settings on router and have tried disabling 'n'... but still seemed to have the connection issues... going to borrow and try a different router altogether tonight or tomorrow.

Good suggestion will2live. I haven't updated mine since I set it up. However I think it is a driver issue with the TI chip we have, not a router issue.

so are youll trying to say that this isnt the issue of cm7?i dont think so...i never had such problems with the stock rom..

Im seeing the same thing - running the encore version and my wifi is all open - drops a bit or takes a while to connect? anyone else?

I loaded the most recent version of CM7 and am having issues with the Nook not finding any WiFi. It worked fine for about 12 hours, but now won't find any access points. I have tried turning off WiFi and back on several times as well as rebooting.
Any ideas on how to get the WiFi to see access points?

Try a clean install? My wifi works pretty well ( I sometimes have to turn off and let it shill for 30 sec) on Phiremod 6.1 (cm7.0.2)

I have had serious wifi headaches myself (with both 7.0.0 and 7.0.2). I have tried each about a dozen times, wiping, different versions of CWM recovery, tried nightlies and always the same. Wifi will connect, I'll start downloading something, and then it will disconnect at some point (may be a minute, may be 3 or 4). Turning wifi on and off brings it back to life but only momentarily. Have no issues with Nookie Froyo or stock. I did try connecting to WEP (other than my usual WPA2) but could only do this by tethering to my phone. It seemed to have fewer disconnects but I did still have issues there. Plus, resorting to tethering or a less secure network is also obviously not really a solution. Really hoping a pattern can be discovered to diagnose this issue because its becoming a deal breaker for me. This issue aside, LOVE the ROM.

Wifi really slow?

Anyone else's nook have really slow/sporadic wifi? Mine seems to burst, then come to a crawl and sometimes not do anything at all. The dropbox app is basically useless as it fails to download 99% of the time. The browsers are all slow too. I have wireless N and a 16Mbit connection at home so it's not my internet. My Evo downloads and runs 100x faster than my nook, on 3G.
I'm not having any issues.
None of those issues here on home wifi or tether to Evo. Dropbox is one of my newest fav programs and hasnt stopped an in progress DL once..
I am not seeing any sort of weird "slowness", but I will say that Opera Mobile is, **by far**, the best browser for this device in terms of performance.
yeah it does the same for me. reboot it. it works well on that for while, and sometimes turning wifi off, then back on will help.

Yes this happens to me, more often I would like and there are times when it just seems to stop but the wifi is at full bars (what ever they are called). I have noticed that when I check the wifi in the Nook settings the wifi will say "connected-testing", this means it is not connecting, it "sees" the signal but no data is being transfered, turning it on and off usually does the trick. When it says "connected to the internet", data is being transfered.
I too have ridiculously slow network connections. It is almost useless in some apps. But browser seems to be okay.
Can you guys that are having this issue post your Wifi settings and Router models perhaps there is a commonality on this,
Personally I have had no trouble out of mine, Using Wireless N, WPA2, off a Netgear WNDR 3400
I have been experiencing the slow wifi also. Downloading apps from Market is like 1KB/sec.
Running Nookie 0.6.7 from SD card (class 4). Using WPA2 AES.
I'm having slow wifi problems on a new Class 10 (supposedly) froyo install as well.
Not just wifi, too. It seems to go off to lala-land for a few seconds when I try to do much of anything. Scrolling and things like that still respond, but the apps themselves freeze.
Ok, so that is Two people using Froyo having the wifi problem? what rom are you other guys using?
I have not had this problem and I'm Running Rooted 1.1
Perhaps this is a issue with the Froyo build?
My nook was rooted on 1.0 and I'm running stock 2.1 android and I'm having the same problems
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
My nook's connection is unbearably slow on my home connection, which is wireless b/g with WPA PSK. If connect anywhere else (except for a Border yesterday) it does not have this problem.
Also have the "connection testing" problem. I am returning mine to Best Buy - will advise.
ROM 1.0.1 problem not as bad
ROM 1.1.0 problem unacceptable...
Both rooted...
Yes, it's definitely only a froyo issue with me. My rooted 1.1 stock rom is zip-zip-zippy.
I've tried froyo installs four times (both the std and mod versions) on a Class 4 and a Class 10 card. All had wifi issues and general sluggishness. And yet I see people saying froyo is quick. Hmmm....

This is a hardware problem. I had the identical symptom - tried all sorts of apps (softlocker, etc...)
Just returned by exchanging my NC at Best Buy and the problems are gone. I am at 1.1 with Monster Pack 0.7.
The offending NC serial no is 2010 110 0650xxxx
The good NC serial no is 2010 110 1509xxxx
So make sure the SN of the replacement unit is higher!
I've had this problem since the day I bought my nook.
A couple of things I've found...
1) The problem is with how the nook handles wifi. My college wifi is a piece of crap, and everything has problems connecting. Nook won't/can't establish a reliable connection.
2) I have no problems with wifi using DeeperBlue's HoneyComb. Hell, HC can get a better signal than my notebook. If I can get that to install market, I'll just run that off the sdcard. Battery life seems better there too.
3) If you get internet at B&N, then it's not a hardware problem. Every Nook of any kind has the same problems that i'm having.(on this network)
a couple of solutions I found.
1) Connectify. Nook doesn't really like it, but it works better than no intertubes.
2) Reboot the wifi. It works sometimes.
3) pray?
I've been having odd wifi problems with my NC, and I'm at my end with this.
My NC is stock, unrooted v.1.1. I can boot from one of two Nookie Froyo SD cards (one with an OC kernel, another vanilla).
Quite simply, the Android side will no longer connect to the internet, Marketplace, etc. The B&N stock side does just fine.
The Android side worked briefly -- out-of-the-box, I connected it to an open network and got on the Marketplace, whereupon it locked up on me. I put it away, and didn't pick it up until yesterday, at which time I found that no matter which SD card I used, there's nothing doing on wireless networking. While Android finds and connects to open or secured networks, I can't bring up a webpage, go to email, check the Market, you name it.
I don't think this is a hardware issue given that the Stock side can get online (albeit slowly at times). What the eff is going on with my Android side? Should I start over and build up *yet another* card? What can I do to diagnose and solve this?
I'm willing to return this NC, but I don't see the point if I'm somehow doing something to "break" the wireless connectivity in installing apps and pushing files and customizing the install (and whatever else) in creating my Nookie Froyo cards.
Any tips or suggested resources are greatly appreciated!
I had the same problem with Stock, Rooted with Autonooter, and Froyo boot from sd card. I changed the settings on my router to WEP security from AES and now have no problems with it.

CM7 RC4 Wifi crashing

Ok so on the RC4 CM7 build my wifi is very unstable, whenever I attempt to download files it will randomly crash resulting in any files being downloaded without a restart bookmark being lost as I have to leave the program I'm in turn off Wifi turn it back on and then finallly i'm able to reconnect to the internet. Is anyone else having this problem? If you did, do you know how to fix it? I'm at my wits end here as there are programs I've had to try to download for over 2 hours because of these wifi crashes....
Thanks,

I've had the exact same issue, and I'm not 100% sure yet, but mine completely went away when I uninstalled Setting Profiles Lite. I was using it to turn off Wifi every time it went into suspend mode (same settings I used on Eclair) but since I did that, wifi hasn't burped once. Like you I could barely download anything before it would stop and I had to turn off and back on wifi to make it work again for a while.
this seems to happen to me every morning between 5 and 7am.. most other times it works great.. i cant figure it out either
not using that program.....
Well I checked just to make sure and I am not using the program you mentioned so I am at a loss as to why the wifi will crap out randomly and have to be turned off then on... Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Adan
I'm having the same issue. No idea what's going on, but it's driving me crazy.
I don't seem to have the same trouble just surfing the web, but if I try to download anything or stream video, it craps out about every 5 minutes.

Yeah, mine is still crapping out tonight too.. stock wifi works perfect. I am using CM7 on SD, anyone else?
yep yep yep
Exactly the same setup man. Using my CM7 on my SD card and WIFI runs just fine on my reg Nook software, Nookie Froyo, and HC sds i have run....

This may be silly, but are you all setting your wifi to 'never sleep's on advanced settings under wifi settings? If you are not familiar with Cm roms, I can see how you might miss this essential setting. Just press the menu key after going into wifi settings, and a secondary menu will come up..with scan, and advanced...under advanced, set wifi sleep policy to never. Hope this helps, but if it's something you all already know, then please disregard.

So this isn't specific to the Nook Color, it's a CM7 bug overall that Wifi falls out?
What's interesting is my wifi will stay connected, idle, for 8+ hours (while I slept) but I then download 2M of files while eating breakfast and it dies and I have to restart wifi to make it work again...
This is definitely going to make me wait until it's fixed to put CM7 on emmc, this is really aggravating. Which I hate, because I'm really digging CM7. It's perkier, runs smoother, and no B&N shortcut thingy popping up by accident all of the time.
So anyone NOT on SD seeing this problem on the Nook Color? Sounds like this might be a generic CM7 issue but I've also been told that heavy IO on the SD could cause IO problems in other areas, including wifi.
I'm not on SD and having the same problems.
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=3314
Can you guys go there and Star that issue and add your configuration and experience?
And please, if anyone figures out anything, be a hero and tell us I'm thinking about wiping fresh and not installing any apps and seeing if the behavior continues.
Popped out my CM7 SD card and booted to Eclair and just spent 45 minutes updating my apps I hadn't done in 4 days, read Engadget, read some news in Pulse, played a youtube video, downloaded some other data.
Not one hiccup.
CM7 is sooooo nice, hopefully this gets figured out. What's bad is that a lot of people say they don't have the problem, so something is going on.
BUMP

Don't want this forgotten until it is fixed
I have been dealing with thisfora while and I seem to have come across a work around. I switched the security settings of my router and made it a compley open network. Since then, I've had zero issues. My wireless network is unsecure now, but I live out in the woods, so I'm not too concerned.
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
Several people have reported this, specifically with the Nook Color. I personally haven't had wifi crashes or refusal to wake up, but I have noticed that websites take significantly longer to load on my Nook Color than they do on either my wifes or my Droid X. Obviously there are a ton of factors that could be responsible for this though.
Okay, so I tried everything I could think of.. Imaged back to totally clean CM7 RC4, not even gapps.. Fiddled with all sorts of CM Perf settings (vm heap, JIT, etc)
Considering I've also had the wifi dropouts on my phone, work, and home router I was convinced it could not be anything router specific, but I have an old Linksys B router that I keep up for my daughters computer which I have an ancient Prism wireless card in so I didn't have to run cables to her room.
It works. I used it about hour last night, off and on for a few hours today. No wifi hangs.
So my next step is to figure out if it's the router or the encryption... My B router has no encryption on it, just MAC filtering to keep out the neighbors. The G router running DD-WRT has WPA Encryption. So I'm going to disable Encryption on the G router and turn on MAC filtering and see what happens. If it works there, it must be related to encryption. If it still fails, it must be something related to the router or router FW.
Okay, first thing I did was change from TKIP+AES to only TKIP on my G router and so far so good. I found some other evidence that AES might be an issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11598765&postcount=187
Anyone else, please try TKIP only if your router has AES available?
nopers
Sorry man I don't have AES as a option, so I'm not sure that is the problem...

[FIX] WiFi connectivity issues with phiremod/CM7

This continued 'dropping and reconnecting' to my WPA/2 has been driving me nuts and I found the holy grail for my problem to share.
During the course of troubleshooting I:
1. updated router firmware
2. changed security from wep to wpa to wpa2
3. hard coded the nook mac address to enabled, even though there was no block setup.....
4. YadaYada.... pullin my frickin hair out then the moment of calrity
When I observed 'connected devices to my wireless I noticed that all other devices in da house had typical host names like laptop1, server1 whatever and the host name for the nook when attempting to connect was, and I quote
'android-873iurhfier98734598'
or in other words a dash with a huge random number/letter sequence that showed up as funky 'alien' ascii characters to the router.
So the fix was:
goto settings
goto applications
goto development
goto device hostname
dropdown to edit and backspace(erase) the dash-----bull****
I ended up with a host name of android
went back to wifi settings, forgot and reconnected and BAM
Done deal.
Hope this helps some of you who are having wifi problems.......
I believe this is related to certain wireless routers being unable to translate the characters into something other then gibberish ascii characters it believes its seeing????
whatever I dont care anymore....

Hmmmm,
I have a belkin N1 wireless router and did update to the latest firmware. I did change several settings during the course of getting my issue resolved as follows:
Radio = 11g
Bandwidth = 20Mhz+40Mhz-auto
QOS = OFF
Authentication = WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK
Encryption = TKIP+AES
obscure PSK = OFF
hopefully these will help..............

I had issues with cm7.0.2/3 stables and phiremod 6.2, .29 kernels until I stumbled on my fix. However this also works well for me with the 2.6.32, beta 3.1.
FYI, I have been running all of these off SD, my emmc is 1.01 rooted and very stable.
Dude, you are a lifesaver. I've been running into this problem frequently and it's sort of a kiss of death for WiFi when it happens and I have to re-do the whole CM7 SD Card. It's working perfectly now though after I just had a card fixed pretty much perfectly.
Thanks for posting this...
I didn't have any connection-disconnection type WiFi problems, but I went ahead and shortened the name to just android. What it fixed for me is the YouTube on Phiremod 6.3. Previously, any clip would stop with an error message. The progress bar of loading the clip ahead of the video playback was moving slowly at the beginning, but then jumping to the very end, and when the playback was at the "jumping point", it was giving me an error. Now, after this "fix", the bar moves along slowly all the way to the end, and video never stops with an error. Even if the playback catches up with the bar, it just pauses and waits for more to be loaded (mainly for HQ clips, occasionally).
Thanks again for this "unexpected" YouTube fix
FYI, I'm no longer able to get WiFi on the 108 Nightly. I tried this sequence again and haven't had any luck. Looks like a full wipe/install again.
EDIT: Just turned off the "Network Notification" and it's working fine again. Strange, but it keeps me from having to wipe AND my WiFi is working again. I hope that helps someone else.
Well since everyone is posting what worked for them, I figure I might as well too
I started getting this problem yesterday, never had it in the week up till then.
Problem started when I changed did a factory reset on my Belkin router (yes I know Belkin sucks) and changed the security to WEP (I know, I know, WEP sucks too) so that we could connect to XBox Live with an ancient xbox receiver thing (xbox was hardwired in our old apartment, and I'm not buying a new xbox just for freaking built in wifi it should have had in the first place lol).
Enough in the way of background. Suffice to say, I was having the wifi drop issue on my nook, but the xbox, wii, and two laptops were fine.
Last night I tried flashing back to stable CM7, n108, n106, and n85. No go. Also tried the honeycomb port from SDK 11. No go.
I changed the device name in applications -> development to "android" and turned off notifications when there was an available wifi hotspot. Still no go.
Changed about every wifi my POS Belkin had, still didn't work.
I flashed back to stock 1.2 with no root and no CWM, and wifi was still turning on and off.
I did two things since then and one of two things fixed it; not 100% sure which.
1. This morning I downloaded the software for my router from Belkin and reloaded it. Before I could test it, I had to rush off to work.
2. At work I rerooted, reinstalled CWM, and loaded n110, and when I got home IT WORKED!
Seems most likely to me that reloading the router software is what did it, although it may be n110 that did it.
So anyway, for everyone who is as desperate as I was last night, here's two more things to try.
Here was my fix to my issues

I'm not sure if this has been meantioned or not.......I have NO problems when tethering from my phone. Its only when connected to my router. Also I ran a couple of shows from Netflix to see if it would hold a connection from the router. Both shows ran perfect. But as soon as I tried searching on the browser it stopped working. I can then at that point wait it out or disconnect and reconnect. But again it works flawlessly tethering from my tbolt using wireless tether.

I can say this forum helped tremendously. Editing the Nook hostname fixed my WIFI issues. I have a Linksys WRT610N V1 with WPA2-Personal TKIP/ASIP with no issues now. All I did was make this change... Excellent connectivity now.
This is THE most frustrating issue that remains (for me) using the NC . I've tried most everything here at home to get a stable continuous connection, and end up failing.
Took it into work yesterday & sniffed out an open wifi WAP there, showed only one bar, yet it connected & played Netflix,Pandora, etc flawlessly.
well, just now reset my router (TP-Link wr1043N) & upgraded it's FW, and it is now allowing Netflix streaming. Holding breath, fingers crossed, etc

agreed. NC is charging now, but hoping that this issue is over for good. Thanks for the idea to look at the FW as a solution
Strange. I was using build 120 with my router with no issues, then after a few days it stopped working and would not reconnect even after a reboot. Forgetting the connection and recreating it didn't work either. However making the connection not use AES worked.

Motorola Milestone issues

Hello,
I'm a newbie regarding Android, I just got a Milestone with MIUI 1.9.9. and I have some problems. First my RAM memory is 0.00 bytes and I don't know why because I'm using only email right now. Second I a have problem with WIFI, I changed the slep policy, and when I activate Wifi it's starting scanning for nothing, no wifi Network appears and when I can connect, after a whie it's disconnecting itself and doesn't reconnect.
I've read that CM7 is the best to install but I don't know how, maybe someone will help me with a turorial, I want to keep MIUI but I have these problems with it.

Try installing the app Script Manager from the Market and running Zeppelinrox's supercharging. A simple search will give you the thread.
What kind of wireless router do you have? What is the encryption?
As for CM7 (and any other ROM), you need wipe your data and both caches.
To do so, you will need to reboot into recovery, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache partition and then wipe data. Then, you flash CM7, wipe both caches, flash the google apps addon, wipe both caches again, change baseband and reboot.
I tried CM7,and now downgrade to CM6 and still no Wifi connection, it's scanning but doesn't show anything. I use a D-Link router, it's open connection. I've read somewhere that on 2.2 or 2.3 based Android versions wifi it's not working. Does anybody know a solution to this issue?...
I really need my WIFI connection.
P.S. The hardware it's ok, I went to a mobile service and they told me it must be software problem.
I'm trying to update to Eclait Teluslite but I have problems in openrecovery with and I get verifying md5 then all failed and E: Failed verifying checksums. Someome told me that with eclair solved the wifi problem
The only wifi problem we have is with the sleep policy
Try to reboot your router.
If it doesn't work try to see if you can get a connection with another one.

It's like this, I installed again MIUI, I like the interface, sometime(rarely) or only one time I can connect to my router, all working, but in a while it disconnects and after that the phone is scanning but it doesn't show me any network, just not in range. And it's doing like this in any MOD. Sleep policy is never, 13 channels, proxy on/off...nothing seems to work to find again the wifi and connect.
Check my signature, and post a kernel log, when it does that.

ok, I hope I got it right and this is the log. Wifi is activated, scanning but my network doesn't show up. I have a N900 that is working just fine with my wifi router.
Accidental call hold (upper-left corner touch issue)
Hi,
I find calls are often put accidentally on hold, as my ear touches the "hold" button on the upper left corner of the touch screen.
The functionality supposed to prevent this (the promixity/light sensor near the center of the upper border) does work when I test it manually, but apparently I tend to keep the phone at the left ear in such a position the ear doesn't cover the sensor all the time.
This has been a recurring issue on the Milestone, both the original firmware and now with cyanogenmod 7.
I remember others commenting on this when the Milestone was new. Anything in Cyanogenmod to resolve the issue? If not, a couple of alternatives come to mind
* switch the phone program to something other than the Motorola original
* if source is available, modify the phone program to have the hold button in a different place, recompile & install the modified phone program
* other suggestions?
UPDATE: Solved the issue: there's an option to hide the Hold button in cyanogenmod 7:
From general settings menu: settings --> call settings --> Hide Hold button

I have now
[ROM] HO!NO! mod CM7.1.0-RC15-11.09.14 and doesn't reach to scan wifi because it's turning on/off over and over.
Update: back to MIUI...HO!NO! moving to slow, lag...still the same wifi problem
Kernel log looks ok .. other then
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): tiwlan0: link is not ready
sorry for late reply. i had problems.
but if it starting to do that by itself "on and off" it's already been discussed as hardware related
does your wireless router has ipv6 enabled ?
try one more time this (without kernel):
logcat -f /sdcard/KernelLog.txt

[HOW-TO] Get 4g Hot Spot (Infrastructure) to work after MOD'ng

Ok,
So, I, along with a few others, pay for the Unlimited Mobile HotSpot and want this app to work as other (root) tethering apps only allow Ad-Hoc.
Here's what I did to get it to work on my Windows 7 x64 Computer as of just a few moments ago and I do plan to work on this issue to get this figured out.
I've discovered that the /data/misc/dhcp/udhcpd.conf file is what controls the DHCP addressing for the 4gMobileHotSpot App. Within this app, I discovered (in the Modded ROM (as of now, I have Gingervolt1.1)), that the "Option DNS" addresses were completely wrong. This was apparent from the get go as they were internal IP address starting with 192.168.x.x.
The steps to get this app working on Windows is:
0 - Be Rooted (Sorry, just had to point the obvious out in Step 0)
1 - Use the market and download/install the Text Edit (Paul Mach) App
2 - (TESTed and Working), Use AntTek (root) Explorer and navigate to:
/data/misc
3 - Long Press the udhcpd.conf file and select to open with the Text Edit App
4 - Change the 'option dns' from 192.168.x.x to 66.174.92.14 69.78.96.14 and save/exit
5* - In Windows, set the IPV4 Properties to:
Use Following Address:
IP Address: 192.168.1.5 (or anything in between start and end range in text file)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Use Following DNS server addresses:
Preferred DNS Server: 66.174.92.14
Alternate DNS Server: 69.78.96.14
6 - Start 4gHotSpot App
7 - Tell Windows to Connect and you should be connected.
NOTE: It is late and I know that this will become clearer as time goes on and since I have to work in the morning, this is the best I came up with in a few minutes after figuring out that the hang up was with this file, in which I knew it's been a DHCP issue all along. Why this file is changed with the Modded ROMs is beyond me and I doubt MT changed this, so likely it is something to do with the DE-odex or some other modification of this app and it's initialization. Just deleting the CONFIG file will only cause it to write a new one with the wrong values again.
For those who do use this app, it is known to stop responding at times and I am going to look into that. I'm thinking this is a DNS issue and will try some other DNS Servers (8.8.8.8 I believe is a Google public DNS)..
In the meantime, this is a start for anyone to add to this that has more DHCP/DNS/Network experience. I don't have another android device handy to test the connectivity, so will have to get that figured out.
Key point here is, is that the 4gHotSpot App gets corrupted with the Custom ROMs and for some reason sets up wrong DNS servers in the Config file.
Hope to see some thoughts, additions, fixes, to this problem with this being pointed out, from others. I will continue to work on it throughout this next week after work.
Last Note: The DNS server numbers came from the original Config prior to rooting/modding. Also, I do know that is it redundant to have them in the config file AND the Windows Properties. It's just that setting Windows to 192.168.1.1 (option router in the Config file) didn't work. Again, will work on cleaning this method up and simplifying.

Thought I would give this a try today after re-rooting. I had no luck getting connected with the 4g hotspot app.
On my phone the file was in /data/misc/dhcp/ and the values were already correct in the file.
I tried changing the dns to a public one and back - neither worked.
I tried moving the file to /data/misc and it didn't work.
My ipad seems to connect ok but hangs trying to lease an ip address. Reloaded v6 tot and upgraded to non-rooted gingerbread and the app works again.
Is it possible you changed something else?
I'm glad it's working for you. Wish I could get it working as this is the only thing keeping me stuck on a non-rooted phone.

Ok, so here's what I did after reading your post:
1 - Corrected the path (Sorry, it was late and I missed that /dhcp portion of the path).
2 - Deleted "option router 192.168.1.1" from udhcpd.conf file
3 - Deleted "option dns x.x.x.x x.x.x.x" from udhcpd.conf file
Set Windows up with the Following:
Static IP : 192.168.1.2
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers : 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
That worked.
So, what I am seeing if I try to use DHCP on Windows is that the 4gHotSpot gives the computer 192.168.16.x addressing even though the config file is set to give out 192.168.1.x addresses (x=2 through 254). It also gives Windows 3 DNS servers that are local IP addresses and will never go anywhere.
What to do now? Figure out what is being changed with the Custom ROMs that is causing the app to act like that. In fact, it will act like that when I restore back to Stock GB Rooted via restore from backup in CWM, but I have yet to test deleting the config file and restarting 4gHotSpot to test. I will do that over the weekend as I don't have a lot of time I can have my phone down during week. But I do plan to up to the GingerVolt1.3 tonight.
As of right now, I am using my windows machine connected to the 4gHotSpot App to write this post. Also, I don't know about the iPhone/iPad and possible settings. If you can Force (Set a Static IP) then follow what I did up above, but you will also need to set the DNS servers and not sure you can do that on an Iphone/iPad.
The DNS Servers I listed are found on a public list and are also said to be Verizon DNS servers...
The other problem I found and is an issue with the app, is using auto b/g/n will cause the hotspot to lose connectivity. When in that mode, I connect at 65Mbps, but it drops down to 6Mbps and stalls and fluctuates. I set it to 'g' only and get a SOLID 54Mbps connection just like the tether apps.
SPEED TEST Results: 18.35 Mbps Down, 10.66 Mbps Up without a glitch.
Obviously this app works with DHCP addressing as STOCK. So, I will begin my Android Development with figuring out one of two things. Either get this app to work as it's supposed to, or create a root app with 'Infrastructure' based on whatever I can find in the coding for this app if I can figure out a way to decode it.
I personally hate the idea that you can't connect other android devices to AdHoc and also annoys me to have to manually connect Windows since it doesn't seem to have the ability to automatically connect to AdHoc Networks. Linux does perfectly fine with auto connect AdHoc, go figure. Android is Linux Based, yet can't AdHoc, but provides an AdHoc as an access point for other devices. weird, lol.
Let me know if any of this helps, but do know I am going to continue to figure this out. I'm sure de-odexing the app had something to do with it as I'm sure Verizon did their best to keep this app from being hacked for free HotSpot service.
-Cybie
Thanks for the detailed response.
I'm going to try again. I won't be able to try until tonight or tomorrow morning when I have time to play with it and roll back if necessary.
I'll let you know if it works or I find out anything else.
Before you install a ROM and have the app working, try connecting your computer and get the values (ip, dns, gateway, etc.) That the app dhcp assigns and post that. Rooting the phone alone shouldn't break the app either. By getting those values posted, would help and also save me from downgrading just for that purpose. Knowing that it works with without a mod is one thing,. So my focus is working on getting it to function with a modded ROM.
It's strange that i can get the app to work if i force the connecting device to values (static settings), but this doesn't help with certain devices and needs to connect via dhcp.

These number are from your connected device? What device are you connecting that give you such numbers? I'm not familiar with the iPad and how it displays connection details. Is that what that is from?
I'm still able to connect after updating to GingerVolt1.2 and manually installed 4gHotSpot app. I just got home with little time to work on this project for the night, so I will update what I can if any changes in getting things to work.

those numbers were from an ipad connected via dhcp.
I'll see if I can use a laptop at work today to see the values I get connecting from a laptop. Should be the same I would imagine.
I will retry rooting the stock rom tonight and see what happens.

Sounds good. Those numbers will help.
I will add, though, that someone posted a way to get the wifi tether to work with the Revolution, here in the forum. The problem, though, is that it's connection via 'n' mode, which would be great, except it drops out. If you try to download something that's fast (or going to speedtest sites), you will find that that happens and what everyone is complaining about the HotSpot app not working. All that needs to be done is changing it to 'g' only mode and a solid connection.
Anyhow, I will see if I can figure out how to get that app working on 'g' only mode also, and if I do, then I will just use that app instead. Otherwise, I plan to continue to figure out the 4gHotSpot App

Cybie,
Glad to see someone's tackling this...I don't suppose your work here could be applied in a way that would make this app work for those who don't pay for the mobile hotspot?
I am waiting on a replacement Revo to arrive in the mail, should be here tomorrow or Saturday. Any values I can pull that might be of use to you before I get happy with flashing roms, rooting, etc?
I find that the OpenDNS nameservers tend to work pretty well everywhere I use them, if you wanted to give them a try:
Primary: 208.67.222.222
Secondary: 208.67.220.220

Sorry for the delay. Been working extra hours at work and haven't had the energy to do much with this past couple days.
Anyhow, no, I don't intend to try to get it working for those who do not pay. Why? There are apps out there for this and the only reason I was trying to get this to work properly was for the fact that it would be nice to have the proper connection for those who do pay. I say that because the HotSpot app actually has a faster wifi connection (using n mode) than the tether (root) apps out there, with the exception of the one posted at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339150
Unfortunately I am having the same issue with the HotSpot and that app (using infrastructure mode) when connecting. They both to link up at 65Mbps. In fact, I got 72Mbps with the wifi Tether app from the link, but like the HotSpot app, I have issues with the connection dropping out using 'n' mode.
The HotSpot app will allow you to set it to 'g' only mode, though only get a 54Mbps link speed, but sustains a solid connection with no drop outs. Others say they don't have that issue, so it may just be my wifi adapter??? I am going to test it on my laptop, but if I remember, I did have that same issue with the laptop, so maybe it's just my phone??
Either way, I am going to be doing what I can to get 4gHotSpot to work correctly with rooted/modded ROMs. Strange thing is, rooted, it still works fine. After installed modded ROM, it fails to work. And if I restore back to factory rooted via CWM, it still doesn't work. You actually have to restored/flash back to total stock. After that, you can root with it working, but not after installing a ROM.
-Cybie
Any luck with the fix?
OK, so I read that your hotspot worked fine after rooting, but stopped with the ROM was changed.
I rooted my phone yesterday, using the one button method. I have not modified the phone beyond this change. As far as I can tell the only functionality problem I have is with the hotspot.
The tether method continues to work (as I am using it right now). The hotspot does make a wifi connection to my devices but there never is any received data from the network.
Please help, any ideas on what I should look at or change?
Thanks ahead of time.

I've noticed something very strange with the HotSpot and Rooting.
If you root, the HotSpot continues to work. But, if you reboot after rooting, that's when the failures begin. So, I am thinking that the files are being overwritten. I've been able to test with clean root, root with tether app, and restore without root.
Without root, the HotSpot continues to work fine as I have been using it for the past two weeks as I need it for my new WiFi Tablet. There is the WiFi app the allows for Infrastructure, but that also allows devices to connect via N-Mode, where I have issues of the data dropping out. Forcing b/g only on my HotSpot app, I have very reliable service.
I am planning (after my trip) to root my phone, copy some DHCP files before ANYthing can be changed and before rebooting. Comparing these files and seeing if anything changes there. If so, that will allow me to create a simple app to restore these files back to stock, either automatically, or through 'starting' of the app.
I haven't forgotten about this issue and It's something that I am needing to figure out. The problem is time right now. For the past few months, I had to work a job in order to keep bills paid. That job took a lot of my hours I used to have to figure things out. I am going to be having limited time available, but do plan to work on it some more in the next few weeks, especially since i want my Tablet to work flawlessly with my phone, as that is my ONLY source of internet and I DO pay for the HotSpot service.
-Cybie
Thanks for the update.
Like you I also pay for the 4g hotspot. I jumped on it when they offered the unlimited for $30.
Now that I've tried the gingervolt rom and the supercharger script I don't think I can go back. It just feels like a totally different phone.
I haven't had as much need for it recently so I haven't tried one of the other tethering apps.
Thanks for plugging along on this.
Yes, thanks for looking at this.
Here is some more observations:
Using your set ip and other setting I can get the hotspot to work. Two of my devices are not able to set a fix address without rooting them. So they do connect but only my PC will download a web page.
Here is the address my Revo is setting on the other two devices: 192.168.16.30 and .31.
Ok, so here's an update to this issue.
I have tracked the problem down to a failure to write to the udhcpd.leases file within the /data/misc/dhcp folder.
So, I did some searches on the net about a few things, but there's not much information regarding the "paid" HotSpot feature vs the (Root) Tether Apps.
What I did comes across, though, is there seems to be some sort of issue with certain versions of busybox relating to the udhcpd.conf. I also found the file that gives the 192.168.16.x addresses. But, by the time I found it, the phone already goofed up the HotSpot app settings and things weren't working. So, next round of factory restoring via LGNPST/Tot, I will seek into that and see what I can find out.
It's weird that the 4g HotSpot app will work flawlessly on the initial boot (Rooted, ROM'd, and even OC'd). But, after a reboot of the phone (once or twice), it becomes corrupted and non-working. It's going to be related to some sort of permissions issue and some file that is able to be corrupted/changed with the root/superuser access. I had similar results with fresh restore and JUST root, so the ROM's have nothing to do with it as far as I am concerned at this point.
In case you might ask. I Refreshed phone to total stock, rooted, and then, all at one shot, installed Gingervolt 1.3, OC, and Hotspot before rooting phone. HotSpot worked fine until the next reboot, where it did work for a few minutes then Kaboom! Nodda.
If someone can access (pull) the /system/var/lib/misc/udhcpd.leases file from a fresh stock phone, or even first-time booted, rooted phone, I would appreciate that as this file may be something in question, but my file was already changed by the time I found it.
-Cybie
I love to help but mine isn't working either. Can you get me started on returning the phone back to stock? I did install a backup util, and ran it first thing after rooting. But I am guessing that wasn't soon enough.
I will take a look at the file I have, I will try the two viewers I have, not sure if they will work.
I did run a restore, and the hotspot did work afterwards. My signal is very weak -110 dBm right now so if you can tell me how to copy/view the file I can get it for you (I did check my tools and could find the file but could not view it, I tried to email it to myself but the encoder couldn't handle it).
By the way, are you aware of a bug in the hotspot, tethering. When you turn off the hot spot and start tethering the hotspot comes back on and tethering will not start. It take a phone power turn to fix it.

EDIT: When you copy these files, Don't view them until you zip up a copy first. They could potentially get corrupted. not likely, but with the way it's going with this 'project', who knows.
adb pull /data/misc/dhcp datadhcp (This will copy files from phone to a created directory called datadhcp)
Also, and more importantly, this is what I am really wanting:
adb pull /system/var/lib/misc varmisc (copies to created varmisc folder)
AND
adb pull system/etc/dhcpcd dhcpcd (copied to dhcpcd folder)
The created folders and files will be in the same 'dos' directory you have adb in. You can use the folder in which the all in one root is from MT if you are wondering where to get that by any chance.
Those would be a big help in getting thing figured out. At least, if those are the culprits.
NOTE: In order to have non-corrupted files, these have to be pulled from a fresh restore via LGNPST / Tot method. A restore via nandroid backup will not work. those files, once corrupted, seem to remain so, even after a restore for some odd reason, unless you were lucky enough to not have them corrupted prior to backing up, which would likely mean you rooted, rebooted into recovery and backed up before rebooting into your phone.
By the way, are you aware of a bug in the hotspot, tethering. When you turn off the hot spot and start tethering the hotspot comes back on and tethering will not start. It take a phone power turn to fix it.

Please clarify on this. Are you referring to starting the 4gHotSpot, shutting it down, and then starting a (root) Tether App??? If so, I haven't really had that issue because once I have to use the root apps to tether with, that usually means my HotSpot won't work at that point. I will say, however, I have had an issue where the HotSpot didn't want to shut down. I just go into Services/App Management and force a shutdown instead of a reboot. A bit quicker....
-Cybie
I will take a run at copying this stuff later today.
On the hotspot bug. Even before rooting, or upgrading to GB there was this bug, and it is still there after GB.
Once the hotspot has been started and then the user shuts it down it appears to shut down. Then the tethering (the application that came with the phone) is initiated it looks like it is tethering but the hotspot icon comes on after the phone has finished tethering and indeed it is running that way too.
I tried this five time last night: Restored the hotspot both application and data (titanium app), installation part of the application would fail but T said it was complete. Launched the application and two of the five times the PC had the correct IP address, the other three times it had the corrupted ones. Also when the PC did come up correctly the second device's IP address was corrupted. So I may need to fiddle a bit to fine the uncorrupted files after restore.
Perhaps someone else could help with copies the files too?
