Hey there all, first off, I have searched for the problem I'm having, and I couldn't find anything. So I figured the Q&A was the place to ask.
I recently received a new/refurb cappy to replace my original (It was pressing the home button repeatedly). The old one was a 1009 build and it worked fine with odin (both versions) and download and all that. The new one however, works with 3 button fix, but Odin wont see it. It shipped from att with the 2.2 already on it, along with 3e recovery. I have rooted the new one, but that's as far as I can get.
So my question is:
Can I switch the new phone back to 2.1 to be able to root/custom rom/etc?
(Also, when I have my battery in the original phone, it shows as normal [whatever its charged to], but when it is in the new phone, it shows as 5% and won't charge, no matter how long I leave it there. Any thoughts?)
sounds like a defective phone. battery wont charge? is it any battery or just the one from the old phone? also can you see the sdcard on the pc with the phone on? and are you using windows xp or windows 7?

Sorry if this is a stupid comment, but I really just have to ask...
Did you turn USB Debugging on?
If the answer is yes, then I have to agree with the above post. It's sounding a lot like a faulty phone.
The battery is my original one from my first captivate. The phone does show up on the computer when I plug it in, I can access the sd card. Using Win7 64 bit.
I called warranty about it, and they're sending a replacement battery, but really I'd rather stick with my old phone. The new one doesn't like being rooted/cwr'd

Firstly, may I apologise, I know this has been covered, I've trawled the internet for hours but just can't seem to get an answer.
I recently updated my UK, unlocked Galaxy S to Froyo via the registry hack, all was fine (ish). Because Froyo had been delayed in the UK and wasn't as great when it was running on my phone I thought it would be safer to revert back to 2.1 and wait until the official UK release came out (I know some will ask me why I did this, I just felt that Froyo was held back for a reason and I couldnt get an answer as to if I could update to the UK version if I already had the Scandinavian one). So I did the reg hack again and was offered 2.1. Everything seemed to go smoothly until the phone rebooted after downloading from Kies. Now the phone's animation starts then the flashing S symbol displays for an extended time. After that, the screen goes black. If I touch the two touchscreen buttons they stay on but do not go off. If I hold the power button the phone turns itself off and when the phone is powered off and I plug it into my PC with a USB, the battery charging sign comes on.
The phone was rooted and I did have the OCLF on but uninstalled that and un-rooted before changing the firmware so it was back to stock.
Before I get 20 people telling me to put the phone in download/recovery mode I must tell you that I can't. My phone has never been able to do it. I've tried every single way and button order suggested. I'm not the only one who's phone won't do it either so it's not just me. The only way I ever saw recovery mode on my phone was when I used the one click root on the PC.
I'm at a total loss. Debugging was turned off because Kies won't let you do anything with it turned on and so ADB recovery is out also.
Please help if you can.
Many thanks,
Ryan
Boot to download mode, do a repartition with Odin and 512 pit flash, remove battery and boot again to download mode and then do a odin firmware flash to which ever firmware you want.
thanks intratech but I can't boot the phone into recovery or download mode (sorry should have stated that). Believe me, I have tried every combination. I did a lot of research and discovered that there are quite a few people for whom that feature was disabled.
if the 3 button combo is not working on your phone, you should not do these risky stuff actually

thanks Noobproof. I remember coming across that thread last night. Although I consider myself ok with software, soldering and slicing just isn't my forte. I haven't got a clue about soldering, etc. I've just come back from the Carphone Warehouse (Samsung suggested I go there as they are the service centres listed on the Samsung UK website). The engineer had the phone for half hour and said that the "board was faulty". Haven't got a clue what he meant by that, unless he meant the internal SD which a few people have had go on them. Anywho, he told me to ring Samsung and send it in for a repair. I did that and need to send my phone special delivery to a company called regenersis in Scotland.
I knew rooting and flashing custom roms was a risk, that's why I never touched Odin, etc. I used Kies to upgrade to Froyo and Kies to downgrade back to Eclair. You would think that sticking to official Samsung software would be safe. I must admit, when it was going well I loved my Galaxy but more and more I'm starting to wish I'd opted for the Iphone. It just seems that there have been so many glitches and bugs, I mean, why should there ever be a need for lag fix in the first place? I often found myself keeping my fingers crossed when downloading simple apps as that was usually touch and go!
Feeling a bit deflated now. Was hoping some clever boffin had designed a software solution that would recognise the phone and force it into download/recovery mode.
Ah well, thanks for taking the time to respond anyway.
Best wishes,
Ryan
You know i was very happy when i for the phone for the first time and while i was doing a research (i live in turkey and there is no stock android market here) i came along this forum. And i have learned that i havent got the 3 button combo. I downloaded the 3 button fix abd took the phone to samsung centre.
They told me that they cannot flash it and i made a huge fight then they accepted and i have my 3 buttons. Never give up your phone. I dont think the internal sd is faulty it is just corruppted if you can access the recovery menu you could fix it. Any way you have to find a service centre that has an anyway jig box other a jtag box otherwise they will have to replace the motherboard. Good luck

I had the same problem all i did was use a different firmware .. didnt choose anything in pitfile and did not check on repartition but checked only F reset and Auto reboot and flashed my phone and voila it booted perfectly fine
Hope it helps others with black screen problem after booting
thanks

I had the same problem too. This method really works.

Hello,
I upgraded to Froyo last week, and hadn't had any problems until now. Yesterday when I had my bluetooth hooked up to the phone, it all of a sudden disconnected, which has happened many times before when the phones battery goes dead. So, last night I plugged into the wall to charge it, and this morning I wake up to the screen constantly flashing on and off (showing the black startup screen that says "Galaxy S I9000 Samsung".
I've tried plugging it into my computer, plugging it back into the wall charger, and booting into recovery mode, but all it does is show the battery charging screen momentarily (batteries shows to have no charge it whatsoever), and then switches back to flashing the startup screen.
Can someone please help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Cam
Hi Cam,
I have the same issue as you have and I'm trying to find the way to reload my device with the stock OS Android 2.1 Eclair that includes the bootloader that seems defective for some reason.
I was bounced by from Bell support to Samsung support, then to Best Buy where I got it and back to Bell.
I'll keep you in the loop if I find a solution.
Good luck

Hey Maxx,
I called Samsung this morning and they told me to take it to the Bell store where I purchased it from, and they may need to flash it or send it in for repairs.
Definitely keep me in the loop, it's much appreciated. This is extremely frustrating.
Thanks,

Hi Cam,
I will try the instruction found in the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870058 after work.
Let's hope this will do the trick.
Maxx
Hi Maxx,
Did you get a chance to try it out? If so, did you have any luck?
Thanks,
Cam
Hi Cam,
No success with any firmware combination I tried, I think the only thing left is to send it back for repair. There is many others that have the same issues. All seems to be related to an internal SD card that is defective.
Maxx
Thanks, dude. Unfortunately it looks like I'll be sending it back today. You know whether or not I should take the two SD cards out before sending it back? I presume I should at least take out the card that I purchased separately?
Very late reply but this happened for me today (i was trying to install cwm through program Heimdall). So i put phone to download mode and using odin i was able to push in android 2.3.6 and everything works fine (except root permision gone).
My Samsung Captivate was working fine a day ago when I was transferring video off of it to my PC. Now this comes up and I'm like WTH lol. I've never dropped my captivate or damaged it( to my knowledge).
I have read in other posts that the only way to fix this is to replace the mini usb port inside of the phone... If that is true could someone direct me to a site that sells it?
Or is It a battery issue? because It now has a problem with showing the charging battery symbol when its not charging now...
I also thought about going to At&T and letting them tell me what they think, only thing i'm afraid of is that without me being able to flash back to Official 2.1 Eclair they wont help me...
Any suggestions guys?
Bump T_T............
lol, make it totally bricked, att will not see if the phone cannot turn on.
Have you tried switching computers? My laptop stopped reading my phone, but my desktop picked it up just fine.
Try factory reseting and flashing to a new rom
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Well I would Flash it to stock, but how would I do that without the use of USB, because no computer can detect my phone as it is now.... the USB Port is damaged I believe.
As for Bricking it how can I do that because they told me I could replace it because I'm under warrenty, but they also told me that if its found out of warrenty that they may charge me upwards to 480 bucks for the replacement. The guy on the phone told me it only applied to cosmetic and liquid damage though, he didnt mention stuff like flashing the OS or modding.
This is strictly a Hardware Issue as it was working 2 days ago.
lol, you can easily brick your phone by doing the following:
1. download a rom;
2. go to recovery mode;
3. start flashing the rom and remove the battery during the process;
never help people like this ... i feel guilty ...
lol ikr? Never thought I'd ever ask that xD.
Can you plug your phone in to the wall charger and it charge. When you plug.it into.the PC are you getting a message about USB device not recognized. Are you using a.deshktop or a laptop what OS. If you are using a desktop are you using a port on the back preferrably the one closest to the motherboard. These are all things to take into account.
If when you plug it into the wall.or computer your phone will charge then most likely there is nothing wrong with your micro-usb on the phone. Instead its the computer. I had the same issue and had to fight with it for days but now it works everytime I plug [email protected]

I am using windows on my laptop and Fedora linux on my netbook and I have tried to connect all of them to it and it failed and they all had the latest drivers and my usb development and all that stuff is as it should be.
like i said in the OP it was working 2 days ago perfectly and I did nothing to change it or damaged it in any way ( to my knowledge) maybe the usb port got messed up when i tried to charge it but I can still get a charge but the battery keeps showing its charging even when it is off of the charger.

only way to really know is by flashing another rom... use your mobile browser not xda app, and go to xda, find a rom thread, and use the mobile browser to download the rom over 3g... reboot into recovery to install it, it will be in the download directory on your internal SD...
Well I would do that but Now I have another problem... it turned off and now it wont turn back on!!!! UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!!

Well I thought I should Follow up on my Question... Somehow I got my Samsung Captivate to magically connect to my PC and believe me it was very Wonky. And Soon as my PC detected it I hurried and Downloaded Odin for Stock 2.1 and Put my Captivate in download mode using Cognition's Download mode option in the hold button popup on screen.
Long story short I was finally able to get my captivate back to 2.1 and the reported problem still exists... I'm calling ATT right now for my replacement that should be here in 2 days ^_^
Thanks Again to all the people here at xda for your help, I deeply appreciate it!
place dg cf7 on sd card via another phone or use an alternate browser to download it also get clockwork mod rec.zip and boot into recovery install from there, thats how I got back to stock after same problem as you, warranty phone.
worked for me
Well guys I’ve been reading this forum front to back for over a week and was scared as hell to mess with my phone, but I really wanted ICS and some of the other nice software I’ve seen here.
Firmware: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9000DXJV9
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9000DXJV9-CL216763
[email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.DXJV9
I wanted to start simple with a CF root. I’ve read the flashing instruction so many times I thought I could do it in my sleep. So I backed everything up, turned the phone off and back on in DOWNLOAD, started Odin 1.82, loaded the CF root for JVQ (which is as close as I could find worked with my phone), then I attached the USB cable. The first time it started to flash, but it immediately hung while trying to start a connection. I unplugged and the phone was still fine. Started over and this time I saw the drivers install and thought now it should be OK.
Loaded the CF root JVQ in PDA, left everything as default (re-partition unchecked) and the other two checked. It flashed quickly and just as quickly it came up FAILED! Disconnected my phone and now I can’t even get DOWNLOAD. All I get is the silly icon of a phone with a caution triangle in the middle of a dashed line to an icon of a computer and even that won’t go away now. I remember seeing this symbol one time somewhere on this board, but don't remember where.
Looks like my worst fears have come true…a bricked phone on my first try. I never envisioned a situation where I could not get to DOWNLOAD mode and I do know where to buy a JIG, but I think it wouldn't help even in this case. Any help will certainly be appreciated.

JIG will most likely save your day, because you can have hardbricked phone only by messing with bootloaders AFAIK. And as CF-ROOT doesn't touch bootloaders, you'll be fine..just get jig and continue flashing
ps. I assume that you have tried taking battery off, inserting it while pressing 3-button combo etc. methods which you'll find around the forum..dunno even if they actually work..
Last time i got exactly the same situation when flashing CF root for 2.3.5 XXJVS..
Try connecting the phone to the comp with the phone, triangle, and comp icon on your phone screen, see if Odin detected your phone...
If yes, you can try flashing the whole stock firmware again, it should work...
i got into that situation twice and those steps always worked for me luckily.. (it works for me, saved my bricked phone)
wish you luck

Now your solution may be exactly what happened. I tried to connect using Kies, but my computer never even saw a device being plugged in so I never even thought to try Odin.
So I must apologize. I didn’t have the patience or perseverance to wait for an answer. I happen to live in a large city in a country that has a lot of clever tech people and phones are huge here in Thailand.
I was either going to buy a cheap phone so I could stay in basic contact until I worked through the problem with the help of this board or buy a new Galaxy S, instead I decided to see if someone here could actually get me back up and running in short order. Fortunately I found one shop that did. I watched him load up Odin, pick the PDA, PHONE, CSC and PIT files and re-partition, but I don’t know how he got a connection to Odin, because that’s where I was stuck.
I certainly could no longer get a connection via Kies or the drivers I had which were working just a short time ago. So the question I still have is how the heck did he get a connection to the phone?
Of course it would be too much to ask for him to load the original software so now Kies will not work with my phone, but that doesn’t bother me so much because I really don’t use it. He installed 2.3.2, Baseband XXJVE, Build Number XWJV1, which is a step backwards, but it works, although I’ve gotten one screen with tiny red letters in the top-left corner that said “panic kernel”, but after a reboot everything has been fine. BTW, the repair cost just under $15 USD.
Here's another question while I'm at it. What causes this to happen? I thought for sure I did everything I've read a 100 times on this board in the proper order.
Buy a Jig at eBay
Well, yes JIG will most likely save your day.
BUT
Try those meanwhile you wait for JIG:
1. take battery out and leave it few hours maybe and than try to boot download mode (increase times-hour, 2 hours, 4 hours,....)
2. press buttons for download mode (that phone and pc connected with dots and triangle will most likely appear), plug your phone to PC and try different USB ports and see if odin finds your phone, it happened to me once, however odin did
find my phone on that pic and i flashed (dunno why, maybe just luck)
3. take battery out, press buttons for download mode, and put battery back in, it can trigger download mode (found this by googleing sometime ago)
Or try google for more solutions, allthough I reccomend JIG
I know about the JIG and where to get one, but it ain't gonna happen soon and I'm sure this guy yesterday did not use one and he was confident he could restore the software and he did, so there is a way without the JIG.

This was a very useful reply and I thank you for it. Mail here is unreliable so I won't have a JIG until April when a friend brings one over, though Hong Kong sells most of them on eBay and some of them do deliver here free. I might try to get one from there.
Anyway, if this does happen again I have a couple of other things to try thanks to you.
I thought about Google (of course), I'm just not sure how to word the search with the phone+triangle+computer icon, but I'll give that a go also.
Kurre and asdsadas2010 also gave useful replies...Thanks.
I didn't think it would be that easy to find, but the first result in my search that popped up was this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751210 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/How_to_get_into_download_mode
Lots of variations on similar solutions. Really no need to add to this thread anymore.

Hi there,
I fear I hard bricked my G1 (after long years of good service as gps device thanks to a 2600mAh battery).
Since it was quite slow on CM7, I downgraded it to CM6.1. But this would'nt boot. (boot loop)
So I did a bit of reading and decided to downgrade the radio too. I downloaded a flashable zip and flashed it the usual way in the CWM recovery - which didn't finish (after a few minutes), so I removed the battery.
Since then my G1 wont start any more. On top of that, it want event charge. If I try to charge it the status led wont event light up. (I already tried it with two different batteries, both yield the same results.)
Funny thing though: If I don't charge it and let it sit for a few hours, the status LED very shortly lights up when pressing the power button. (But other than this nothing happens and if I press the power button again shortly after the LED stays dead.)
So ... I fear the problem is hardware and not software related.
Does anybody have an idea what could be broken (software or hardware) and if it's software based if there's a way to revive my phone?
(Before anybody asks ... yes, I have newer android phones, but I really live my G1 for nostalgic value so if there a way to get it running again I definitely would try.)
thx a lot,
Bapf
Sounds like you need JTAG, and don't take this the wrong way, but flashing firmware isn't the usual way, its the way you brick your phone. If possible always use fast boot to flash firmware or you are asking for a brick.
You can buy the JTAG equipment yourself and the software is free. Or you can see if you can find someone locally to do it. Unless you have a particular sentimental value to this phone it maybe cheaper to buy a new one.... Sorry for bad news

Bricked G1 - Try Again w/ SIM Card IN!
I had the exact symptoms mentioned in this post - tried nearly everything until I finally put back in the SIM card (even through I don't have T-Mobile anymore) - it booted again and registers the AC adapter and/or USB cable. Hope this helps some who are struggling at this level as I did!!

I don't know if this will work,as I've never encountered a situation such as this, but have you tried bootloader(power button+camera button)?
If you can get it into bootloader, then I have the original rc29 DREAIMG.NBH file(plus, rc29 is the best place to start if you want to root it or install a custom rom).If you get it working and just want stock 1.6, i have those updates as well.
(all said out of hope, I have a g1 and I love it,I'm really glad that someone else shares my enthusiasm!!)
If bootloader works, give me your email and i'll send you the files, good luck!:fingers-crossed:
Nope. It won't even start the bootloader.
