[Q] Is the Optimus 2X laggy? - LG Optimus 2x

Hello,
I want to ask optimus 2X owners something,
I read a review on engadget
And they say that the optimus 2X's software is laggy and that the memory is not enough
Is that true? or can I buy my optimus 2X without any doubt?
Thank you

No, retail software 2.2.2 is stable and not laggy.

i have installed a lot of apps and still everything is very fast.

No lag here lol lightning fast..

It was very fast until the new rom update that sprint put out. Now everything just crawls. Used to have root as well. Now just looking to maybe get a different rom loaded

No certainly not laggy! very responsive!

No lags.

lag?
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA Premium App

Mine is rooted, some applications frozen - I have noticed nothing i would call lag.

Well, I disagree with recent sentiment in this thread.
It does lag.
No terribly so but it's patently obvious that some processes don't use SMP and as a result lag is evident.
Whenever the package manager is accessed or a notification comes in the phone seems to go into serial processing mode and effectively hands processor priority to the system app.
In my opinion this is software related and is fixed in Honeycomb - these lags are not apparent on a Moto Xoom (2.3) but they are apparent on a Moto Atrix (2.2).
Examples:
Play a CPU intensive game and force a notification, watch it momentarily stall.
Queue a lot of Market downloads and wait till they start "installing" - try using your phone.

Yes you are correct. Seen my mistake after posting

My homescreen is almost always laggy.
Weather animation lags to.
The phonecall quality is also bad.
Its not what i've expected from a dual core phone and
Im not 100% happy with this gadget.

laggy? I would say it got some certain hangtimes on occasions...
at 1st, there was no lags, now I had it for about 14 days, and its filled up with a lot off apps. I get hangtimes when installing a new app. That was not the situation in the beginnning. Also got some hangtimes when exiting some apps on occasion.
I found a workaround though.
I rooted, installed autokiller (not a usual task killer as you might think of) and Cache Cleaner NG.
Also, I installed Titanium backup, and "froze" or uninstalled unnessecary apps, stock apps etc. Now I got a lot more free ram, and a quicker ROM.
I use Zeam Launcher and I have frozen LG launcher.
But don't get to worried. When android 2.3 comes around, it will be much faster, as 2.2 doesn't support dual core + 2.3 is much more optimized.
Battery life + user experince will increase tenfold or more
The best phone till date in my oppinion.
looking forward to HTC Pyramid though, which I dont expect to be around the next 6 months, and by then, I'm able to get a new phone

The LG Launcher is not really that good, not laggy but not super responsive either. I user LauncherPro and haven't experienced any lag at all. I'm amazed at this phones speed.

o2x.. is it real multitasking?

i was wondering if our o2x is really doing multitasking.
because when im playing youtube then switch to facebook, when i go back to youtube, it was paused then will be doing the buffering again.
same on browser, when i am watching video on it, when i switch to different app, when i go back to browser, it stopped playing.
is it just me?

Are you on stock or using a custom rom like cm7?
Sent from my Optimus 2X using XDA App
Blame this on the optimus 2x's lack of ram.
Android does allow multitasking, but when there are too many apps running, and free memory gets low, it automatically kills off apps that are minimised.
I find that the original rom is rather inefficient in ram. I am running CM7 KANG by Temasek, and find that apps close in the background much less frequently. On original ROM, just opening one other app would easily close the previous one, while on CM7, I could open a couple of games and still see my web browser/youtube app running.

Flash a custom rom on your phone with an additional ramhack (see my signature Vadonkas KANG kernel) this will give you some extra RAM.
YouTube always pauses the video when you close the app. Same goes for the browser. Has nothing to do with the device. I run MIUI and 32mb ram hack and it still happens..

True. It has more to do with how the app is coded. And in this case, the Youtube app is designed to pause and clear the memory to not waste too much ram by accident.
Another example with the same behavior is Opera Mobile. Using Opera Mini however, you'll notice that it saves your state from wherever you left the app.
thanks guys! i think this is not rom problem. im on cm7 latest temasek kang with vadonka based version kernel. i believe our o2x is really not multitasking. on browser and on youtube app, o2x fail.. im starting to hate this phone. (sigh)

In that case, no phone is really "multitasking", it's litterally a memory management issue.
You can try tidying up your phone and clearing it's cache.
I have tried the galaxy 2 and it's very similar to the o2x, only the camera and the browser are more higher than the dual. I haven't tried the galaxy nexus but I think that this a problem of every smartphone

Run a ram script. Such as v6superscharger. Or if you look through the android developement threads their might be a customized one for our o2x. The scripts change the values so each app is less likely to be killed and ram management is amazingly bretter.

A few posts up I said it has nothing to do with neither the devices' ram nor android memory management. But still everybody gives advice on how to improve this management.
It's the YT app pausing the video and not Android! If Android had something to do with it, it would have closed the app instead of simply pausing the video.
I wonder if some here are incapable of reading..

The OP mentioned that the youtube app buffers again, which shouldn't be the case. The OP should have expected the video to remained paused at that same point and the buffer to not disappear. But the app reloads itself when it gets killed, buffering again.

Just for the record and remind some f you, O2X doesnt do **** for multitasking, ITS THE OS, please keep that in mind (yes we know O2X comes with really crappy software, but if youre here on XDA you probably flashed... I mean fixed that )
Now its true, stock kill apps almost immediately even freaking docs then browser then back to docks... feels like an ithing (even now it doesnt do much multitasking, what it does it saves a preview and when you re-open it shows you the preview instantly but it loads a while, not immetiately responsive), but a custom rom, oh thats a whole new story, best one is CM7/MIUI and even better a custom CM7 kang the best imho
My advice try not multitask with more than 2 app which require heavy ram, like Nova 2 & opera browser, just remember this u won't get any problem.

How to eliminate ALL scrolling lag and YouTube/HD video stuttering

Google's project butter is the best thing to ever happen to android in terms of visual polish but I was curious as to why it still was jittery despite all its freaking gpu/cpu cores.
Turns out full gpu acceleration is not on by default so I went into development in the settings and forced 2d gpu acceleration. Disabling the overlays does more harm than good it seems.
This thing is BUTTER. Try this in rom toolbox, before scrolling was jittery and after it was perfect. Same with tapatalk.
What it breaks:
Google movies
Moon reader+ fonts

Should work out for the most part, but some apps out there may not function properly with HW acceleration.
Ah, that works much much better. Before it seemed only a little faster than my old Kindle Fire ICS Rom, but now it's flying.

Disabling this also fixed my stuttering problems on YouTube app and 720p movies stored internally. Don't really plan on using Google movies that much anyway.

Since it's so easy to change (no reboot even required) it shouldn't be a big problem for most people. Its a very dramatic change in fluidity and silkyness you wont forget to turn it back on.

Yes, there is no picture in the movie. I don't think overlays need to be turned off for speed, overlays should be supported in HW by the GPU as well. So if you force GPU 2D rendering, that is enough to really speed up the UI.
Or maybe I am wrong?

Funny seeing this tweak brought up here. We went through 6+ months on prime messing with that tweak. I believe it more so just enables older apps to use hardware acceleration. Most newer apps and jellybean rom in general already uses hardware acceleration in the coding by default. Regardless of what you see in developers settings. This was the case in ICS. Likely the same with jellybean also. Alot of developers chimed in on the subject that we might be seeing more of a placebo effect. It likely does work but for older coded apps n such. Most new apps should already use hardware acceleration by default(regardless of what developer setting is showing). Some apps will have issues with it though. Some apps not made to support hardware acceleration so just keep a tally of what apps act up and add them to the op. The new NVISION app for example. At first it messed up with that setting. Cut it off and the app works fine. They eventually updated the app so the setting wouldn't mess it up anymore.
It'll also raise your 2d scores in quadrant, I believe. This will drain battery faster though. I know on prime, it was hard to tell if this was really working or not. To me, it seemed to be working. But down the road I cut it off and things were just the same. So who knows..lol. I know Y nexus 7 doesn't need it. Give it a shot if you experiencing lag somewhere and see of it helps. There's a good chance though that its just a placebo effect. Thouroughly testing needs to be done with it off n on. Jellybean by default already has hardware acceleration for apps n other things. Regardless of what developers option show.

No placebo effect here, this genuinely works even in new apps especially tapatalk and rom toolbox, you should try those with the setting off and then on. Those two apps were bugging me the most. I'm sure it will drain the battery more but I already get three days of use out of this thing anyways.

You have the white 4x? I have the black one and you don't notice that black space. Also the latest software improves camera focus quite a lot. Still bad on close up shots but the app cameramx is fixing that close up focus issue quite nicely. Also latest update improves battery. That's the major improvements I can think off. Yes screen is nice. I think it beats the s3 screen and is closely to the hox screen.

I honestly always thought that lg makes good phones. Even the 2x speed was a great piece of hardware the software was bad. LG made everything better on the 4x and the optimus g is great and also the nexus 4. Those are all lg and since lg has a bad reputation that makes their products cheaper but not less impressive. I didn't keep my s3 or hox. And sold them and got the 4x. The screen is better then the s3 and has not the burnin issue. And the hox has a way worse battery. The only thing is still no software update and no fully root. LG is not good in updating phones.

no doubt. The 4x is my first LG smartphone. i had many phones, ut this phone is so amazingly quick. i can do everything without to mutch lag. i have som problems in games? i dont know why. but i have some small lags. i tried gta3 for the first time on this phone today, and it frozed in the first mission. weard. but i hope we get unlocked bootloader soon, cause this phone with jellybean would be amazing. i remeber my galaxy s2 with jellybean rom was very fast, so i imagin this will bee too. not that it is slow now, but it never gets good enough i guess i contacted lg the other day, and they only said that the jelly bean is on its way. nothing about when or so.

Check the game on screen resolution again, makes a BIG difference

In all honesty...

This phone sucks at multitasking. Galaxy S2 has a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor as well, but it multitasked with ease. This phone feels like an old person that's gonna croak over and die whenever I multitask things. Ex: I'd be downloading an app and go to my messages to read a new message. The phone lags like hell before it opens the message.
The only reason I haven't traded it or sold it is because the only phone I'd consider purchasing right now is an iPhone 4s. I agree android is a bit better but I got bored of it.
But the multitasking problem is the main reason why I dislike this phone (aside from locked BL and and 3 giant buttons taking up the screen.)

I've had this issue on stock, joker and batakang.
I haven't noticed at all...
Personally, the ENTIRE time I've had my Atrix, I never noticed any multitasking lag...
Then again, it all depends on how you use the phone in the first place...
I mainly download, tweet, listen to music and (attempt to) clear the MGS VR missions on mine and I can switch back and forth rather smoothly...
the phone lags when trying to do more than one thing at a time, on any rom.

Oh and what's your usual CPU usage? (What's your hourly average... guestimate if you have to...)
I used pimp my rom and set the oom values to medium and used greenify to hibernate apps and my phone is running great.

Then we do most of the same. If I download an app (let's say Firefox mobile.) I'd go back to twitter, but it'd take a while for twitter to come back up. Even if I don't clear my recent apps, it will still lag when I'm on there.

I usually keep 5~7 apps recent and clear away the apps I don't need to keep "recent"
Oh and you could use greenify too while you're at it...

I never said I used all that
I just use Greenify and switch between a static and live wallpaper all the time... (I'm very indecisive...)
All I did was mention various tactics to to help... Oh and to mention that task killers are bad... Just the usual stuff...
I've tried using greenify and can't get much out of it because you cant do anything with system apps.
That's why you pair it with other battery saving apps like juice defender...
IMO I used JD's Extreme Settings, and just go with that and greenify.
I haven't charged from yesterday, leaving about 53% (I had 55% at midnight, left wi-fi on...)
I've watched Skyfall (in glorious HD) with wi-fi on in the background, and I'm about to start the last Ninja VR Mission for MGS with 32% left.
No Lag, No Issues. If people still insist on complaining about the phone, so be it. This phone is a diamond in the rough, you have to be the one to make it what is.

[Q] Is there any solution for the lag in 4.1 ?

Laggy how ? In games ? Menu ? Apps ? Maybe is some games after playing them for a while since it starting to heat up and LG lowered CPU temp and then phone will start laggin during game.I never expiriance any lagg in Stock LG rom while using it for non gaming.

I've been reading user opinions in GSMarena.com
and all the people over there are complaining of laggy interface, system, app lunch and many apps causing FC
and they also say the battery is draining like crazy !!
Never had random restart or FC more than once every couple of days and only in some messed up apps like Facebook. What's app, chrome, opera, viber,Skype, xda app, instagram never had fc. Battery life isn't great.I can't tell you if you should or shouldn't buy this device I did and I am happy but again we are different persons.

Well, I installed vanir rom recently and I am very happy with everything. If custom roms are taboo for you, dont get this phone, it will be a dissapointment, especially because of battery life.
Big drains in battery life are LG MLT?(IDK how its called),Logging service, Google Transport Services. If you dont root, you will get horible battery life.
You need at least root to disable this things.
Personally i had no lags on any of the stock roms but i switched to custom roms because of the horrible statusbar color. I'm currently using Cyanogenmod 10.2 nightly and i have no lags.
I'm sure there are fast, stock based roms out there if you for some reason do experience lag on the stock rom.
