i was wondering if our o2x is really doing multitasking.
because when im playing youtube then switch to facebook, when i go back to youtube, it was paused then will be doing the buffering again.
same on browser, when i am watching video on it, when i switch to different app, when i go back to browser, it stopped playing.
is it just me?

Are you on stock or using a custom rom like cm7?
Sent from my Optimus 2X using XDA App
Blame this on the optimus 2x's lack of ram.
Android does allow multitasking, but when there are too many apps running, and free memory gets low, it automatically kills off apps that are minimised.
I find that the original rom is rather inefficient in ram. I am running CM7 KANG by Temasek, and find that apps close in the background much less frequently. On original ROM, just opening one other app would easily close the previous one, while on CM7, I could open a couple of games and still see my web browser/youtube app running.

Flash a custom rom on your phone with an additional ramhack (see my signature Vadonkas KANG kernel) this will give you some extra RAM.
YouTube always pauses the video when you close the app. Same goes for the browser. Has nothing to do with the device. I run MIUI and 32mb ram hack and it still happens..

True. It has more to do with how the app is coded. And in this case, the Youtube app is designed to pause and clear the memory to not waste too much ram by accident.
Another example with the same behavior is Opera Mobile. Using Opera Mini however, you'll notice that it saves your state from wherever you left the app.
thanks guys! i think this is not rom problem. im on cm7 latest temasek kang with vadonka based version kernel. i believe our o2x is really not multitasking. on browser and on youtube app, o2x fail.. im starting to hate this phone. (sigh)

In that case, no phone is really "multitasking", it's litterally a memory management issue.
You can try tidying up your phone and clearing it's cache.
I have tried the galaxy 2 and it's very similar to the o2x, only the camera and the browser are more higher than the dual. I haven't tried the galaxy nexus but I think that this a problem of every smartphone

Run a ram script. Such as v6superscharger. Or if you look through the android developement threads their might be a customized one for our o2x. The scripts change the values so each app is less likely to be killed and ram management is amazingly bretter.

A few posts up I said it has nothing to do with neither the devices' ram nor android memory management. But still everybody gives advice on how to improve this management.
It's the YT app pausing the video and not Android! If Android had something to do with it, it would have closed the app instead of simply pausing the video.
I wonder if some here are incapable of reading..

The OP mentioned that the youtube app buffers again, which shouldn't be the case. The OP should have expected the video to remained paused at that same point and the buffer to not disappear. But the app reloads itself when it gets killed, buffering again.

Just for the record and remind some f you, O2X doesnt do **** for multitasking, ITS THE OS, please keep that in mind (yes we know O2X comes with really crappy software, but if youre here on XDA you probably flashed... I mean fixed that )
Now its true, stock kill apps almost immediately even freaking docs then browser then back to docks... feels like an ithing (even now it doesnt do much multitasking, what it does it saves a preview and when you re-open it shows you the preview instantly but it loads a while, not immetiately responsive), but a custom rom, oh thats a whole new story, best one is CM7/MIUI and even better a custom CM7 kang the best imho
My advice try not multitask with more than 2 app which require heavy ram, like Nova 2 & opera browser, just remember this u won't get any problem.

Mine is rooted, some applications frozen - I have noticed nothing i would call lag.
Well, I disagree with recent sentiment in this thread.
It does lag.
No terribly so but it's patently obvious that some processes don't use SMP and as a result lag is evident.
Whenever the package manager is accessed or a notification comes in the phone seems to go into serial processing mode and effectively hands processor priority to the system app.
In my opinion this is software related and is fixed in Honeycomb - these lags are not apparent on a Moto Xoom (2.3) but they are apparent on a Moto Atrix (2.2).
Examples:
Play a CPU intensive game and force a notification, watch it momentarily stall.
Queue a lot of Market downloads and wait till they start "installing" - try using your phone.

My homescreen is almost always laggy.
Weather animation lags to.
The phonecall quality is also bad.
Its not what i've expected from a dual core phone and
Im not 100% happy with this gadget.
laggy? I would say it got some certain hangtimes on occasions...
at 1st, there was no lags, now I had it for about 14 days, and its filled up with a lot off apps. I get hangtimes when installing a new app. That was not the situation in the beginnning. Also got some hangtimes when exiting some apps on occasion.
I found a workaround though.
I rooted, installed autokiller (not a usual task killer as you might think of) and Cache Cleaner NG.
Also, I installed Titanium backup, and "froze" or uninstalled unnessecary apps, stock apps etc. Now I got a lot more free ram, and a quicker ROM.
I use Zeam Launcher and I have frozen LG launcher.
But don't get to worried. When android 2.3 comes around, it will be much faster, as 2.2 doesn't support dual core + 2.3 is much more optimized.
Battery life + user experince will increase tenfold or more
The best phone till date in my oppinion.
looking forward to HTC Pyramid though, which I dont expect to be around the next 6 months, and by then, I'm able to get a new phone
The LG Launcher is not really that good, not laggy but not super responsive either. I user LauncherPro and haven't experienced any lag at all. I'm amazed at this phones speed.
Hi guys, my GTA III is giving much lag, even when I'm riding a car, he starts to give travadinhas as if loading the map. I have the rom Modaco with the original kernel of the rom.
I wonder if anyone has this same problem and if you have any solution?
GTA III is a high performance game requiring high end graphics. Maybe the settings pre-installed in your game in the sd-card are that of max performance. You see O2X lacks sufficient RAM to run games like GTA III. Try changing the settings of graphic parameters. Also, Background apps are bound to make it slower...

Which kernel should i choose ??
i use DjangoManouche 1.5 now
i have a total of 330mb ram only
any good idea i can do
I believe you have 330 mb because the rest up to 512 mb is reserved for system apps. So you can use root explorer and go to /system/app and remove some system apps you don't use and reboot the phone. Just be careful not to touch stuff that is required for the phone to boot. And no, I don't know exactly which these apps are. But here is a tip: I always remove gallery, news and weather, all google apps, music player, stock email, navigation software if there is any, live wallpappers, file explorer (not before getting another though) and everything that's about visualization in general. These things are safe to remove.
And btw the amount of free ram is pretty much irrelevant to the phone's work because the kernel tries to utilize as much ram as possible and then it gives it away to ram requiring apps for the moment. I am just trying to say that you need not worry about free ram if the phone is working correctly. And if it's not it is most likely not because of used ram but some app is not behaving as it should and is using the CPU too much.
You should consider using a kernel that has OTF settings or a RAMhack. I recommend Etana but for some reason I love Temasek's Kernel. They both have the RAMhack option. It basically takes some of the RAM that is reserved for your GPU and makes it available for your device so you'll have more RAM for running applications etc. You shouldn't set the RAMhack too high though, 32mb/48mb should be fine. Additionally you could freeze some system apps that you don't need and use an autostart-manager in association with a task killer to kill applications and not allow them to restart themselves.

What did I just read?
Don't do what was posted, you'll most likely break everything.
System apps uses system storage not ram. Deleting those apps will not give you more ram. But more system storage maybe.
Ram is used to save the current state of opened applications. Though the reason you only have 330mb left, is cause the gpu uses it as shared memory.
A ram hack is an option, as it reduces the amount of ram that goes to the gpu. But the use of a ram hack over 48mbs will break lots of things, such as recorder, camera and instability in games.
In all honesty, there is no use for a ram hack 330mb of ram is enough.
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda app-developers app
If you use DjangoManouche you have ram profiles, another option are to use swap, the benefits, i'm not sure there are
Like a previous post said.....android are coded to use all ram except the amount needed for system to run smooth, apps you open will then be stored in ram which are the fastest "sd card lol". Next time you open its from ram. If you use many apps its useful with much ram. After reboot you start all over again. If there's a memory leak you can get issues like lagging Best solution are to choose a profile with much ram for apps and not much more than nessesary for system
Our device gets better each day thanks to our amazing devs
Use guestekrnl 1.8.1 and enable ZRam, works a charm. See my recent post in the flix123 v20s thread as well.

To have more free RAM means it has to take some from the normally non accessible system dedicated RAM. This way your device has less RAM for things like graphics which can worsen video playback and record performance.
Sent from my Optimus 2X using xda app-developers app
The opinion free ram is wasted ram is wrong. you should realize it from daily use. its because when you have for example 70MB free and you open browser with some tabs, some game, etc. it closes other apps you dont want or it closes some of the tabs in browser and you have to load them every time you switch them. you need enough free ram to open what you want without system automatic closing other and under 100MB really isnt enough

****. I'm concerned about this because my old nexus 10 would do the same thing. I wonder if 2GB is just not enough memory for these high resolution displays. A good chunk of it goes towards video memory, leaving less for the OS to work with.
My stupid n10 would constantly dump tabs on chrome, no matter the type of rom I used (stock, aosp-based CM and AOKP, or just random aosp builds)
Thing is, it's retarded because there's always plenty memory available

@greengoldmello
There's no such thing as "dumped on RAM" as all active apps are running on RAM. Once they are flushed/removed from RAM that's the time your apps refresh when opened again.

Hey happy users of the LG Optimus 4X HD, just want to share you this emulator which runs perfectly on our device.
I only tried two games but they are heavy and run pretty smoothly on our device.
I tried : - Dragonball Z Shin Budokai (absolutely fluid)
- PES 2013 (lags sometimes)
There are also a lot of settings so that you can customise your controls.
You can also save and load state easily.
The app is still in beta stage but is being update frequently, the global performance are improved and the list of compatibility gets longer and longer.
Just a little tip : In the settings, Buffered Rendering is ticked by default however if you want get the real and great graphics, untick Buffered Rendering.
