Google's project butter is the best thing to ever happen to android in terms of visual polish but I was curious as to why it still was jittery despite all its freaking gpu/cpu cores.
Turns out full gpu acceleration is not on by default so I went into development in the settings and forced 2d gpu acceleration. Disabling the overlays does more harm than good it seems.
This thing is BUTTER. Try this in rom toolbox, before scrolling was jittery and after it was perfect. Same with tapatalk.
What it breaks:
Google movies
Moon reader+ fonts

Ah, that works much much better. Before it seemed only a little faster than my old Kindle Fire ICS Rom, but now it's flying.

Disabling this also fixed my stuttering problems on YouTube app and 720p movies stored internally. Don't really plan on using Google movies that much anyway.

Since it's so easy to change (no reboot even required) it shouldn't be a big problem for most people. Its a very dramatic change in fluidity and silkyness you wont forget to turn it back on.

Yes, there is no picture in the movie. I don't think overlays need to be turned off for speed, overlays should be supported in HW by the GPU as well. So if you force GPU 2D rendering, that is enough to really speed up the UI.
Or maybe I am wrong?

It seems like disabling he overlays goes more harm than good, forcing 2d acceleration seems to be the best route.

Funny seeing this tweak brought up here. We went through 6+ months on prime messing with that tweak. I believe it more so just enables older apps to use hardware acceleration. Most newer apps and jellybean rom in general already uses hardware acceleration in the coding by default. Regardless of what you see in developers settings. This was the case in ICS. Likely the same with jellybean also. Alot of developers chimed in on the subject that we might be seeing more of a placebo effect. It likely does work but for older coded apps n such. Most new apps should already use hardware acceleration by default(regardless of what developer setting is showing). Some apps will have issues with it though. Some apps not made to support hardware acceleration so just keep a tally of what apps act up and add them to the op. The new NVISION app for example. At first it messed up with that setting. Cut it off and the app works fine. They eventually updated the app so the setting wouldn't mess it up anymore.
It'll also raise your 2d scores in quadrant, I believe. This will drain battery faster though. I know on prime, it was hard to tell if this was really working or not. To me, it seemed to be working. But down the road I cut it off and things were just the same. So who knows..lol. I know Y nexus 7 doesn't need it. Give it a shot if you experiencing lag somewhere and see of it helps. There's a good chance though that its just a placebo effect. Thouroughly testing needs to be done with it off n on. Jellybean by default already has hardware acceleration for apps n other things. Regardless of what developers option show.

No placebo effect here, this genuinely works even in new apps especially tapatalk and rom toolbox, you should try those with the setting off and then on. Those two apps were bugging me the most. I'm sure it will drain the battery more but I already get three days of use out of this thing anyways.

lag?
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA Premium App
Mine is rooted, some applications frozen - I have noticed nothing i would call lag.
Well, I disagree with recent sentiment in this thread.
It does lag.
No terribly so but it's patently obvious that some processes don't use SMP and as a result lag is evident.
Whenever the package manager is accessed or a notification comes in the phone seems to go into serial processing mode and effectively hands processor priority to the system app.
In my opinion this is software related and is fixed in Honeycomb - these lags are not apparent on a Moto Xoom (2.3) but they are apparent on a Moto Atrix (2.2).
Examples:
Play a CPU intensive game and force a notification, watch it momentarily stall.
Queue a lot of Market downloads and wait till they start "installing" - try using your phone.

My homescreen is almost always laggy.
Weather animation lags to.
The phonecall quality is also bad.
Its not what i've expected from a dual core phone and
Im not 100% happy with this gadget.
laggy? I would say it got some certain hangtimes on occasions...
at 1st, there was no lags, now I had it for about 14 days, and its filled up with a lot off apps. I get hangtimes when installing a new app. That was not the situation in the beginnning. Also got some hangtimes when exiting some apps on occasion.
I found a workaround though.
I rooted, installed autokiller (not a usual task killer as you might think of) and Cache Cleaner NG.
Also, I installed Titanium backup, and "froze" or uninstalled unnessecary apps, stock apps etc. Now I got a lot more free ram, and a quicker ROM.
I use Zeam Launcher and I have frozen LG launcher.
But don't get to worried. When android 2.3 comes around, it will be much faster, as 2.2 doesn't support dual core + 2.3 is much more optimized.
Battery life + user experince will increase tenfold or more
The best phone till date in my oppinion.
looking forward to HTC Pyramid though, which I dont expect to be around the next 6 months, and by then, I'm able to get a new phone
The LG Launcher is not really that good, not laggy but not super responsive either. I user LauncherPro and haven't experienced any lag at all. I'm amazed at this phones speed.
i go a used D3 yesterday. a factory wipe was done, and it was already rooted for me. i rerooted it because i did not see superuser. i am running adw witch does run better then stock launcher but the phone over all is really laggy, kinda like my droidx on froyo was...
this is why i wish i had an SBF for 959, aside from a factory reset again, is there anything in i can do to try and make this run better? im wondering if it is slow because of something the previous user did? and the camera takes AT LEAST 6-7 seconds to load up EVERY time, and it takes for ever to get into focus sometimes...i hear great things about this phone, but so far im not inpressed at all..
thx all
The camera does open very slow. The phone shouldn't be lagging though. Only problem I ever had was with stock launcher. Don't know why this is happening to you.

Check your apps, might have a strange one.
Sounds like something is chewing up your CPU, restart phone and then do some tests and benchmarks, see if your getting average Droid 3 performance. This phone is faster then Tegra phones in most cases including games.
when we get some roms, kernel tweaks and cm7 then this thing will fly.

I ended up going through almost every app i had and checking the refresh intervals to make sure it was limited. also i would limit the accounts you have synced and if you can use the 3rd party apps so you can get better control over how it behaves vs. letting motorola settings take over.
I've had mine for about 24 hours and it doesnt lag processor wise, of course without 4G some of the higher quality data transfer will be slower.

The last one stable cm7 rom from the official site.
which ROM??which launcher are you using??
for me CM7 temasek 135.3 with symbiosis 1.3.1 kernel with guest toolchain fixed every lag...
when multitasking heavily i used to turn Zram ON (192mb).(also I used GO launcher EX....with every GO app and widget possible so my configuration was pretty high on memory consumption compared to other launchers)
give a try to windows 7 launcher as well..it is smooth as ****(you can also have widgets on that)
but be prepared to sacrifice a bit of functionality

Well at least that's what I noticed. You could try it out too. Try some applications without CF3D. After that install CF3D and run the same applications. Hey happy users of the LG Optimus 4X HD, just want to share you this emulator which runs perfectly on our device.
I only tried two games but they are heavy and run pretty smoothly on our device.
I tried : - Dragonball Z Shin Budokai (absolutely fluid)
- PES 2013 (lags sometimes)
There are also a lot of settings so that you can customise your controls.
You can also save and load state easily.
The app is still in beta stage but is being update frequently, the global performance are improved and the list of compatibility gets longer and longer.
Just a little tip : In the settings, Buffered Rendering is ticked by default however if you want get the real and great graphics, untick Buffered Rendering.

I feel like the device is much snappier. I heard battery is supposed to be better with it as well but I can't confirm. The xda app was never the best , now it is almost fluid o.o. or at least noticeably better. What do you have to say ?
i was told to add this:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1qbko3/art_broken_apps/
edit: I would like to add that the apps i notice this most is for instance, when i use hangouts and i'd right ALOOOOOOOT with someone and then scroll up at a fast rate, it would stutter. Now, this stutter is nearly gone.
XDA - xda app is one of the most noticeable, stutter has been reduced by such a large margin that you'd have to try it yourself to believe it.
G+ would have the occasional hickup when scrolling through news posts. Next stop would be the play store, it used to stutter a lot as well, now it's become a lot better. Just for the hell of it i compared it to my sister's note 2 and the difference is there.
I doubt this is a placebo effect, i'm even considering to make a video as proof with dalvik on and off for the hell of it.

Well, it's kind of obvious, if you want the best experience for now you're going to want to go with the official 4.4, since the developers need their time to work their magic.
I have no crashes, i'm using ART so far cause i could care less about what's app. I'll report in about battery life observations once i've at least had this thing running for a whole day.
Feels really smooth so far; don't use any apps that crash(thankfully) on ART. Hard to tell with the battery as I came off a custom kernel that was picked for low power usage. Like with any new firmware, it usually takes a few days of my phone running before I can really judge things. Got to give all the apps running a little time to muck things up to get a solid feel for real world performance; but I'm hopeful from what the past few hours performance/battery wise.
