Having trouble with dropped calls - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been having trouble with my phone dropping calls when it shows I have 2/3 bars. When I dial it takes a while to connect then it drops the call as soon as it connects...could this be my sim card? I have had the same card for at least three yrs. Currently I am running cog 4.1.1 with JJ4 modem. Thanks in advance...

I had this happen on my Sony Ericsson phone before... possible is your sim. ATT sells them for $5 on their site. BUT then agaion ATT is craptastic like that.

Should I have to party for one since they never upgrade me when I got my phone upgrade...they should just give me one...

Take it to an AT&T store, tell them you have bad reception and dropped calls. They will swap it for free.

Hold up, just before you do that.
nugget68, did you backup and restore everything when you went on to Cognition?
(i.e. you restored all your data via Titanium Backup when you first went on to Cognition).

i used TiB for my apps but did not restore system data or anything, i thought it would mess it up if i did...

Well, one quick thing I'll get you to try is...
Go into TiB and you should see 'Phone 1.0' in green text (if I remember properly, as a system file). Click into it, and press 'Wipe Data'.
It's worth a try, it helped me fix a similar issue for someone before.

I will try this and report back in a few days, thanks...

This didn't work, I contacted att and they are sending me a new sim card, hopefully that will help...

Anybody have experience returning a rooted captivate to at&t?

I am sure this has been asked before, but searching ia causing a FC for me. So I ask of you all, has anyone tried returning their rooted captivate? I have one that is build 1007 and I keep hearing that the gps works on build 1012 so I want to switch mine for one of those. So has anyone tried this? Does it work? Is there any risk in trying, like are they going to send me a new one, find out mine is rooted and charge me 500 for the new one? Obviously I would flash stock and if possible without rooting again, recover my imei and product code.
I don't need to hear "oh they can tell or oh just flash stock and it should be fine " I want to hear from people that have tried this or actually know something about it.

3 phones so far.
Restore to stock using ODIN 1 click, and give it back. Make sure u format ur internal SD before u restore to stock to remove any traces left on sd card.
I am 10.07 build now, and GPS works great! The refurbs u get in 10.07 too are working fine. Looks like Samsung corrected them.
Returned a phone that was previously rooted. Removed root, using olcf app. Factory reset, reformat internal sd. Had no issues

Sim card randomly removed

Everyday at one random point of the day it shows a message saying
"Sim card removed. Reboot the phone" I don't know why this is happening... I don't think it's a rom issue cause I had this in cognition and assonance(currently used)..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Most likely you just need a new sim card. Sometimes if they mishandled when taking them in or out it could damage the contacts.
I've seen a few cases where phones belonged to people who literally smoked and held the phone with the same hand at the same time had similar issues. There could be a great deal of tar on the card.
Other than that I would just check the internals and see if anything could be blocking a good.connection.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Can I buy a new similar card wihtout having to change my number? And I'm running the assonance rom and on the status bar it has h instead of 3g is that also caused by the sim card?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The sim card just let's you connect.to the network. Your phone number would be the same as your previous one.
If you ate still under warranty, flash back to stock before you take it uptown to the store and have them put a new sim in as they may notice you have a custom rom and may make note.of it.

I don't have a warranty.. so is this gonna cost a lot of money??

Just go to the AT&T store, tell them you lost your phone and need a new sim card to use on a spare phone. Most of the time it's free.
Ok thanks I'll try it out as quick as possible cause my phone is like not working now..

Did you flash a new rom on your phone with the SIM card installed in the phone?
Just tell them that you need your SIM replaced because this one is acting up. They shouldn't have a problem with that. I had mine replaced recently - there was no charge for it as well as there shouldn't be since they're a dime a dozen.

[Q] Can AT$T tell if you're running a custom rom?

I need to call 611 and gripe about some issues i'm having with my cappy. Does anyone know if at$t will run any sort of diagnostics remotely that will alert them that i'm running serendipity?

Nope. When they check up, it's usually just the IMEI. They ask what you're using (KB1, JH7...) but they assume most don't even know what that means or where to find that info.
I recently have called them from my phone and they didn't mention anything about it not being stock. When I look at my account online from my computer it still shows the captivate.

I'd be careful with Cyanogen though. When I flashed Cyanogen, I received an e-mail from Google saying "Welcome to Nexus S!". I didn't check, but I wouldn't be surprised as AT&T started listing my number online as a Nexus S or some other random Android phone that isn't the Captivate.
In fact, that same question occurred to me today, because I'm running Cyanogen on my HTC Inspire and I need to dial in so they can set up my Voicemail (for some reason, whenever I switch phones my voicemail gets screwed up).

Are you sure you got it on cyanogen, and not on supercurios port? Because the cm rom has correct model numbers, where as supercurios port is a direct rip from the Nexus S.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
The email you receive is not from at&t and is just because the rom uses nexus s market foot print.
Sent from my Captivate using XDA Premium App
The answer is almost certainly no. There is a capability using device management tools to report back ROM details but right now the care reps don't have any access to it or any procedures that use it. They don't even have access to your IMEI so don't worry about custom ROMs unless you are physically returning the device.

What's more, based on my experiences with the Customer Service reps, most of them wouldn't care. The Front Office might, if you had to send in your phone, but every CS rep I've ever talked to has been mighty laid-back about the "rules."

I realize that. But because of the fact that it uses the Nexus S market footprint, it would also (logically) use the same Nexus S footprint over the AT&T network. Otherwise, what you said makes no sense.

Oh gosh that is so far from wrong it's not funny. "Care reps", otherwise known as technicians who fix your problems have every right to access your IMEI number without your consent. Your phone's IMEI is stored by AT&T as a ref number, and can be accessed from the AT&T database at any given time, even by the technicians.

There is an IMEI record for the device you purchased NOT what you are actually using on the network. There is also a TAC reference collected by OTA whenever the SIM goes into a new device, but the care reps (industry standard term, btw) have no scripts using it as far as I know. For example, AT&T still reports me as having a Bold 9700 on my 1st line when it has actually been a Cappy since August. Bottom line, AT&T generally doesn't give a crap what device you use.

Happened to me....I never used supercurios...only CM7.
Fot the OP I doubt they can tell....even less they don't care. I used the sim from an old Sony dumb phone in my old unlocked Nokia N79...and used an unlimited data plan for $15 and tethered.
So yeah, don't worry.

No Sprint Service After Avatar ROM

So there it is, I was on CleanROM. did a wipe and rooted with Avatar rom and when I booted in, I set up wifi. installed some apps. then the sd card was messed up. it wouldn't find my pictures or music, so i copied those portions of the sd card and moved them, it asked if I wanted to overwrite and I said yes. I think this is where I screwed myself.
Cause now i have no sprint service at all. Anyone know how to get it back.
Ok so if this helps,I have reverted back to stock. Was on phone with Sprint and HTC and neither of them could fix it. Even tried taking out the SIM and put back in.

I don't know if Sprint had you try this or not, but you can try to reset of your data profile. I went through similar issues you describe a while back and finally was able to restore service by doing so. I documented my results in this thread.
If that doesn't work, you can try the more drastic ##786# reset, but this one will wipe your phone so proceed with caution.
Good luck!

[Q] Flash HTC One M8 to Boost Mobile?

Has anyone been able to successfully flash this to boost mobile yet? I'm thinking of buying one tomorrow and was wondering if it has already been done.

The only other HTC that I ever flashed was the m7 and its exactly like that. The only issue is I can't get sms to work - which is weird because I've never had a problem with that on any device. 3g and talk are good. Sms is hit or miss. Anyone have any possible solutions? Can anyone confirm sms is working?
I have also succesfully flashed an HTC One M8 to Boost but I wanted to experiment with an LTE donor phone to see if it would give me LTE on my One. To my surprise it did! I managed to get almost everything to work (Call, Text, SMS, MMS, 3G, partial 4G). I say partial 4G as I manage to receive an LTE signal (I can confirm) for about 10 minutes and then I get a notification saying "Invalid Sim Card." This message also popped up on my HTC M7 when I tried the same procedure on it. I was digging through the donor phone's settings and the M8's and I noticed that the IMEI's don't match. Could this be the reason for the drop in LTE signal? If our fellow flashers could help me sort this final issue out I will not hesitate to release the steps that I took to get an active LTE signal on a Boost Mobile flashed phone. Thanks!

What method did you use? I tried flashing the m8 awhile back and had issues with sms. I had talk and 3g, but for some reason I couldn't send or receive text messages. I used the open sesame door method, then replaced files 0 and 1943 with those that contain my info. Afterwards, I went into DFS and wrote mdn, min, and 3g settings.
When you went into QPST to find NV items 0 and 1943, you zeroed them out first right? I used the exact same method as the M7. Write NV items from the donor phone, zero out the ESN, write the ESN, and finally use QPST to write the profiles.

Actually I'm not sure. I have a file that contains my donor information for items 0 and 1943, so I'm pretty sure I just deleted them on the M8 and replaced them with donor info without actually zeroing them out first. After that, I went into DFS and immediately edited the mdn, min, and profile info.
I would say that you should try zeroing out the ESN first and then writting it cause I've never had an issue when doing this method.

Okay so I did what you said, but now I'm getting a wicked error 16 message. Normally I would just stay on with customer service and they would have me power down the phone then turn it back on in a few minutes and the error would go away. This time that hasn't happened at all. I loaded a boost prl into the phone manually but I still haven't had any luck. You have any suggestions?
