[Q] screen responsiveness could be better eh? - Nook Color General

Its always seeemed slow to me but after trying the droids and a some HTC phone I'm keenly aware if how slow it really is. Is this simply a hardware limitation ie cheap digitizer, or really a screen refresh issue, or something else entirely? Its not a dealbreaker, as I've learned to carefully plan my touch, but it definitely slows me down.
Thoughts?
BTW this is on OCed Froyo eMMc

Hmm from reading other forums it sounds like this is a pretty common complaint with android in general :-
Too bad can't be iPod smooth...

[Q] screen responsiveness (answererd)
If you are using the B&N GUI with 2.1, it is a bit slow. To you and I, it is a bit slow, but will be fine with the majority of the people. I am running "customized Nookie Froyo" with Android 2.2 off of the micro SD card (2GB class 4) and it is great. The touch screen response is similar to my itouch or Samsung Captivate.

Did you try recalibrating the NC screen? If you have adb installed you could try this: http://nookdevs.com/Recalibrate_the_NookColor_touch_screen

Nook Color vs Archos 70/101

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/24/archos-70-and-101-internet-tablet-review/
Just $49 more for cameras, kickstands, Android 2.2, less headache, and more.
What do you think? Which one is better?
Anyone used both? Or considering returning the NC for an Archos?
I was just talking about this subject with some friends.
Nook has a much better screen. A 1024x600 res IPS with great angles and crispness. The Archos 70 has a crappy 800x480 TN screen with really bad viewing angles. Screen quality in a tablet is probably most important to me. I want to be able to hold this thing any any direction at any angle and still see it, can't do that with the Archos.
The Nook feels solid... maybe a little too solid, as it is certainly heavier than the Archos 70. The Archos is reportedly very flimsy feeling. This could go either way depending on how much you value solid feeling versus weight.
The Nook has 512MB of RAM and it looks like 1GB or more of app storage space (unfortunately I didn't look at it before installing a few things). The Archos 70 has 256MB of RAM and only a measly 256MB of app storage space. Maybe the modders can fix that if they haven't yet, not sure. But that is a big downer for the Archos to me, I've already installed about 400MB of apps on my Nook in that app space.
Archos seems to have performance on it's side. It's CPU runs at the full 1GHz and it's running Android 2.2 already. My Nook feels sluggish with web browsing (using Dolphin HD), but I'm hoping the Nook update to 2.2 in January can help pep it up some. And maybe someday we'll get a 1GHz kernel.
Archos has a few extra hardware features like Bluetooth, HDMI out, better speakers, and cameras (though probably not a big loss if they are as bad as Engadget says they are).
For me the WAY better screen more than makes up for the slightly slower performance and other features the Nook doesn't have.
Connectivity. Vs. Screen quality... Pick your poison.

Just to clarify, RAM, flash storage space, and CPU are not things that can be fixed/improved with software. These are determined by the physical chips that are soldered on to the board.
There are apps to boost CPU speed a bit, but you will start to run into stability issues if you bump it up too much above what the chip was binned at. A nice 2.2 build might improve things a bit on the NC, but the archos will likely always have an edge. Not just because of its higher clock speed, but also because it has fewer pixels to render.

Don't you mean the nk will have the slightest edge once it gets 2.2?
that all depends on what soc graphics chip the archos 70 has because the ti omap proc at 800 can go blow for blow with alot of 1ghz chips
I think most important think is amount of RAM - 256MB is just to little to get going with highend apps like Flash or games.
The Archos 70 8GB model "feels" flimsy because there is a small gap on the inside center, so this flexes. This gap I believe is from the lack of a harddrive which is in the 250GB model. It only feels flimsy when you push on this gap, however it doesn't twist or anything (strong structure), where the 250 with the drive feels like a brick.
Im dying for the update in january. Let's pray for some decent video playback the hardware is there. cmon!!

I thought the Nook was using a 1GHz CPU that was underclocked to 800MHz. Maybe I'm mistaken?
Regarding the app space, that is a software issue though isn't it?. The Nook partitions what appears to be about 1GB of it's 8GB of flash space for apps. The Archos however only partitions 256MB for apps. Seems like a custom ROM on the Archos could change that up and give more space to apps, or so that is what they say on the archosfans.com forums.
Posted this reply in another thread ... worth repeating ...
While the NC supplier (B&N and it's mfg'er) have a limited track record, the record of Archos is pretty clear ... roll out products that target the 'latest trend' with software that is usually not ready and move on to the next latest thing within a very short time leaving a trail of unsupported devices. If you can live with buying a new thing from Archos every 9-12 mos and knowing support will be GONE after that then go for it.
As said the Nook may not turn out better, but it can't be worse. It has an reasonably up-to-date system now, larger memory, better viewing for it's primary mission. A70 just getting 2.2 and who know what bugs with it (seems to be bugs aplenty); A101 still not very available, what does THAT tell you?
If you want an android multimedia device then the Archos family may be a way to go, but evaluate it against multimedia devices since that is Archos' focus (assuming they have one), not reading and/or tablet functions.
Probably most people on this thread have reading as a primary, tablet second and entertainment third. The screen is really great, pdf reading is real good other than the swipe down instead of swipe sideways, with the Dolphin browser, root, su, multitouch what's not to like? ... did I mention the screen is great?

Lawl i bought the Nook just to Root. Ive got books on it an thats nice but since my phone died i needed a micro-mobile device so i wouldnt have to switch from tv to pc (1 button but im lazy) the Nook simply had the specs to get it done.
Only plus about archos is the BT for a phone but just the possibility of it for the Nook made it a done deal, Having the 60mb wing i know what Devs can do. The screens obviously the best part but double the ram as similar tablets is amazing, Ive loaded tons of 3D games an still have 200Mbs of ram, and the fact that you can drive to a B&N in most towns. (i hate shipping)
I think there both 7" form factor? but the sexy knock the Nooks got was also a winner
Archos is lacking ram an screen, but if a 1.3mp camera an knowing BT will work makes it up there you go.

Great points here and everyone else. The low amount of RAM is a shocker, and is a dealbreaker right there. That makes me glad I don't have an Archos.

Yup, same here, I bought the Nook Color with literally zero intention of reading anything. It's a pure 100% Android browsing/gaming tablet for me
-----
The only thing that gives me pause about my Nook Color purchase is the lack of Bluetooth and a front facing camera. One of my main uses for this device will be watching shows/movies while doing cardio at the gym. Using a wired heaset is dangerous as one wrong move of the arm and boom, your device goes to the floor. A Bluetooth headset and watching stuff on my phone was great (and safe).
And a front facing camera would be nice for video chat. I think all tablets will have this feature in the future and ones that don't will be knocked down a notch.
B&N have already stated that an update is happening "next year", informaton about it happening in January was not true, people seriously should stop repeating this.
In addition to everything written above Archos has a resistive touchscreen which is said to be really unresponsive.

The NC and the Archos Gen8s have the same cpu at different speeds. We've been able to run the NC stable up to about 1.15GHz. Froyo + JIT will go further than oc towards responsiveness.
As for bluetooth, the hardware is at least partially there. I'm still trying to figure it out, so if you know someone who's done ports to a platform with TI bluetooth send them my way.
Thanks for the information everyone, this cleared up my doubts and worries of purchasing the nc.

UPDATE: Looks like that confirmation wasn’t really a confirmation after all. There will be an update, but just probably not in January. Here’s the statement from a B&N PR rep:
B&N plans to update the OS sometime in 2011. Regarding applications, we are committed to the NOOKdeveloper program and on track to add apps to our store in early 2011, but do not have plans enable Android Marketplace at this time.

I bought the NC over other devices for many of the reasons already stated (basically THE SCREEN), also because it has very good wifi reception. I believe I read that Archos was having issues with that.

The nook color looks like an amazing little device.

I'm thinking about getting one and just using it as an android tablet.
I wouldn't be surprised if it ran honeycomb quickly with a 1ghz overclock

No problem. I used this http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting to root. And I use this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451. I'm using 1.1ghz eclair and this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145
I'm on the same boat as the OP. Can't decide between the Nook and the Viewsonic G tablet. How stable are the 2.2 roms on the Nook? I watch streaming live sports on my Streak and Nexus S a lot so flash is a must have for me.

Honestly it's pretty bad. Running it off of a SD card is dirt slow for me compared to my Incredible, and lots of people are bricking their nooks trying to run off the emmc.
Plus, we have no hardware video acceleration at all in Froyo. Youtube doesn't work either.
My hopes are hanging on Cyanogenmod 7. If it doesn't come out before my return period is up, I'm afraid I may be returning the nook.

on a class 6 sd card, i scored a 1560 quadrant on sd booted nookie. Thats not overclocked either. My best on stock rooted eclair with 1.1 ghz was just under 1200. Thats a big difference. Flash and youtube worked. Maybe you are trying to run it off a class 2.

Quadrant score has nothing whatsoever to do with the inherent latency or slow speeds of even a class 10 sd card compared to internal flash. Its flat out sluggish in comparison.
I haven't ran froyo on anything better than a class 4 sd card. I wound up back on 2.1 on internal memory. It was just a little too laggy. I'm currently working on getting it on emmc. I was shopping around in the $300 range right before christmas and the nook was the best option for an android toy. Prices may have changed on others since then, but the nook hardware is really nice besides lack of bluetooth. Price vs what you get I don't think it can be beat.

it really depends, it runs fast off the emmc (internal memory, if you didnt know) or a class 6 or class 10 micro sd, but if all you have is a class 2 or 4 its near impossible to use...
if you wait a couple of weeks the CM7 rom (android 2.3) should be completed... i cant wait!

a huge part of quadrant is the i/o of storage, so wouldnt a faster card result in a higher score (and therefore faster device?)

Yes, but the increase in score between a class 2 and class 10 card is miniscule compared to even overclocking just 100mhz. Try it yourself. The difference in speed from a class 2 card to a class 10 card is a few mb/s write speed. The difference in write speed between a class 10 card and the internal flash is likely an order of magnitude or so. Of course we can't know for sure until we can benchmark the emmc, but this would be consistent with the performance of other devices.
Regardless, froyo on a SD card is not as fast as I need it to be, period. I hate using a device when I "outrun" it - I don't like waiting around for softkeys to pop up, etc.
Back to Stock
Having a screen related issue with my NC, and I just wanted to confirm before shipping it back that all I have to do to return it to the stock 2.1 install + standard recovery is do the 6x interrupt.
Are there any steps I am missing?
I'm running the 1.0.1 NC interface, 1.1Ghz OC, and Zeam interface over it. It's very fast and feels native. I see no reason to boot from an SD card when I have the "android interface" essentially anyways.
However I cannot play any video other than H.264 SD. (and no hulu/netflix yet of course)
I have been running Nookie Froyo on the EMMC for a while now and have been getting Quadrant scores in the 1400-1500s every time. Just follow all the info on http://nookdevs.com/NookColor:_Nookie_Froyo_Tips and you will be fine.

You know in the last 24 hours I really focused on this, as opposed to doing the whole Froyo thing.
Wow. Now I really enjoy this thing. Lack of flash is a big issue, but honestly using button savior instead of softkeys and getting updated to 1.1 have made this a fantastic daily use tablet.
I'm running stock, 1.1.0, Zeam, Dolphin HD and loving it. No Flash, but that doesn't really bother me. Can handle movies, YouTube, Angry Birds, web browsing, every eReader format and service, and my favorite news reader - Pulse. Started using Calibre and Aldiko for a ton of additional news sources for train reading. Got a ton of other apps as well, and in my opinion there is no noticeable lag in anything I do on the Nook, but I mostly love it as a hugely capable reader. Great device!

Yeah, nice. I did have to go to Dolphin 4.2 to get pinch-zoom to work. The latest (4.3) doesn't work.
Today I tried that bootable honeycomb. It's slick looking.. but not fast yet. With 1.1Ghz and 1.0.1, I'm hitting about 1200 on the bench mark. Fine.. I just really wish we had video acceleration for video OTHER than h.264. I don't "read", but bought this to play with. If i'm out and about, i use my iphone to tether the NC.

Perf question: rooted stock ROM/launcher vs. Native android

Howdy. I have an android phone that is debloated and runs like a top. Use CWM regularly etc.
Intrigued by nookcolor, bought one. Using nook w rooted stock eclair Rom with preference to ADW launcher. It is pretty cool and overall does the job. But overall wish it was snappier. Not to mention miss the standard notification banner at top of screen etc
Before I blow away and see for myself, wondering how much performance I could gain if I were to blow away stock launcher/ROM and run a native (nook adapted) eclair or froyo ROM.
I tried the froyo build that runs from SD, granted a type 4 SD card, but it was very slow. Presumably running off internal storage would be better.
My only hesitation is that this is a shared device. If I go to a native ROM I will need to use nook apk instead of standard oem nook UI...just not as sexy.
if the speed improvement is substantial enough I will take the plunge. But having hard time w decision. advice?
Many thanks
Go for it, i love this thing it flys on hc with the 1.1 ghz kernal.

Have you looked into overclocking? General results are it seems "snappier".
The best thing about the nook to me is if I don't like the way one OS runs, it is so easy to return to stock. So I have tried them all. Really. Ended up on Honeycomb v4 on eMMc and don't think I'm going back. Least problems for me, so far. I like the nook app better than the native.
My wife's is running Autonootered 1.0.1 and she likes it better, since her's is primarily a reader with the occasional movie and angry birds game.
I don't read much so the tablet is better for me.
I guess my advice is RESEARCH x 3 and make your decisions based on what you primarily will use the device for.
I've been running 1.1ghz OCed nookie Froyo 6.7 for several weeks now. Getting quadrant scores of around 1800, which is about 600 more than I got with the stock rooted eclair rom. One sticking point, there is a touch input lag with going from screen to screen, but as far as I know it's a driver issue that will hopefuly be corrected. Other than that, every app/game I use runs better/faster on Froyo. Even Flash is working beautifully. You mentioned using the bootable Froyo SD card (I used a class 4 card aswell), and I can confim it's FAR slower than booting it off of the eMMC.
Good luck, hope you make the leap into Froyo.

Thinking of getting teh HD+ ..few questions to all you owners..

I have been looking at the HD+ for sometime and i might get one..i have had a few android tablets and i like the price of this one MUCH more.
few questions..
"The Verge" .com review was horrible..they showed Bad Bad lag, unlocking the screen, pulling the notifications shade down, swithing users etc..was this just a bad hardware issue or is this THAT laggy? did a software update fix it? what would all of you compare the smoothness to especually if you have owened more expensive tablets.
i know you can run CM10.1 but could i run nova launcher on top of the stock software? i read that the stock software gets better battery life?
talking about that..what are you all seeing for battery life and screen on time?
after reading all your comments i will make my decision. also the screen looks georgous and that is what i want..NO Pixels..haha
Thanks in advance!!

I've had my hd+ for a couple weeks, since 2.0.6, so I don't know about previous revs, but its not distractingly laggy or anything horrible like that. I've found it completely acceptable especially due the fact that it is well done in many other regards.
You can run any launcher you want now, even easier since they added google play store support built in, with 2.1.0.
Battery life is really fantastic, depending upon what your doing, etc.. your screen on time will go 6-9 hours easily. Sleeps well, with minimal battery loss as well.
I haven't bothered with cm because i'm quite happy with stock, so I can't comment much on that.
Your not gonna find a better value anywhere. The screen is amazing, 256 ppi and the color tuning they did is just gorgeous. toss in a 64gb sdcard like I have and you get 96gb super high res tablet with great battery life for far far less than anything else on the market.
I second everything andmer says. I'll add that I bought an HD+ right after they were released, and I never had any lag problems and loved the device from day 1. I only had responsiveness issues with the internet browsers I used(stock and maxthon), but the problems weren't that bad, really. Now with the new software update, everything is far smoother and faster than it ever was (for me, at least), and the Chrome browser has replaced the stock browser and is super-fast. I will reinstall Maxthon later tonight and see if that's any better now.
As for battery life, I've heard some people say on the B&N forums that they're getting some battery drainage since the update that they didn't have before, but i haven't had to charge my HD+ for 2 1/2 days and I've been using it a lot in that time--not constantly, but at least for 2-3 hours a night, including reading, installing apps, and lots of internet usage. I think certain apps (ones that are set to constantly update or sync) are to blame for the drain and not the operating system.
The screen is gorgeous--I've compared it in person to friends' tablets and even my wife's iPad mini, and it looks better than all of them. Again, no complaints and I would highly recommend it!
Great info guys...i may grab one today..i mean..how can you beat 179???

I feel the same, I had a tf101 and acer a500, have a nexus 7 and transformer infinity. The nook hd+ I got on monday is really nice...

I just got mine today, but so far i am VERY pleased with it.
You can definitely use Nova launcher, Ive got Nova, Apex, Go and Next 3D on mine right now (just playing around to see what i like the most on here, I use Nova and Next 3D on my HTC One). I was worried about the increase in screen size, but they scale perfectly.
I have no long term battery experience since i just got mine, but ive played on it all evening and the battery has been quite good. It also seems to charge pretty quickly.
Until about three weeks ago, i was a manager for an AT&T corporate store and got to demo a lot of Android tablets. I was honestly never impressed with any of them. I bought this Nook HD+ because i just started really getting into rooting and flashing custom ROMs, hoping to eventually work my way up to some light development. At the current price, i couldnt resist the Nook.
In all honesty i like it far more than other Android tablets ive used that are built with much higher specs. I cant quite explain why :silly:
Regardless, theres no buyers remorse here what so ever. Hope you pick one up, and enjoy it as much as i am mine :good:
I do not feel any serious lag with stock rom 2.10 and based on benchmark numbers it is actually quite good.
(Same scores to Nexus 7 in HTML5 benchmark, 44FPS in 1920x1280 with Epic Citadel 3D gaming benchmark. Nexus 7 has 55FPS)
I tried CM10 and CM10.1. I really liked CM10.1 but running it on SD card is just too slow mainly due to slow read/write by the SD card.
Once they have a stable build it may be possible to replace stock rom completely with CM10.1. That way there would be no I/O penalty from the SD card. At the moment though I would stay with stock rom 2.10 at least for some time.
well..i have to say..i returned the nook...apps like flipboard ran SO laggy, i mean bad..i was on stock 2.1 and tried nova also..no dice..in the end i could not handle some of the lag...
did i maybe have a bad nook?

Sorry about your bad experience. I don't use flipboard so I can't comment on that.
I tested dungeon hunter 4 in single player mode. It runs really smooth just like on the Nexus 7.
Also web browsing and playing online videos both work perfectly.
Maybe it doesn't work well with the apps that you use. If so it may not be a good fit to your needs.

[Q] Any apps or ROMs to help with HD+ overheating problems?

Total noob here, so please go gently on me. I've searched the Nook HD/HD+ General Forum and could not find any threads on this- forgive me if I missed them.
I'm on my second HD+. The first one would overheat and shut down. I've seen online that this is a common problem. The new (recertified) one also heats up in the lower left quadrant when using a browser, but it hasn't shut down (yet).
I've tried CM11 on SD just for fun, but it freezes several times an hour on me, which makes it hard for me to give Kitkat a fair trial. Honestly, I don't have any issues with the Nook stock ROM. I've put Holo Launcher on it, and it does everything I want to just fine (photo frame, reading, simple games, videos, etc.).
I would be willing to root and/or EMMC CM ROM if it would help with the overheating issue without sacrificing stability or battery life.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Heat issues
I had heat issues with stock and all CM11 roms. However....Pac Rom seems to have solved the issues.
Go here for how to : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2705381
I've tried many of these ROMs and am using this with ZERO problems. Don't forget to turn off location services and be chincy with apps you let run in the background. No CNN widgets.

I am using the latest TWRP .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/development/recovery-unofficial-twrp-2-7-1-0-t2828280
Not sure if this will flash with CM recovery...Think so..just not sure.
Either way...Pac Rom has been the best so far for my Nook HD+

They all get a little warm in the lower left the CPU is there and they don't have fans. It should not get so hot as to be uncomfortable though.

In my experience CM10.x and CM11 run noticeably cooler than stock ROM.
What brand & class of SD did you use? Generally class 4 is better than class 6 or 10 for running ROM off SD -- see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633 for discussion of comparative performance of different SD makes/models for the purpose of hosting ROM.
Thank you all for your help. I guess if it doesn't shut down, I can live with it warming up a bit.
Have any of you had any instability issues with the ROMs you're currently using? Any effect on battery life?
The SD card I'm using is a SanDisk 16GB class 4 micro SDHC. I played with it some more today, and it's no better- still freezes quite often.

I never liked running ROMs on any SD cards because the internal memory is usually much faster on these sort of devices. I'm not 100% sure (maybe someone who is can chime in), but I believe that you're not going to have TRIM support with a SD card so the system is going to slow down over time.
Thanks ryanl2299. I'm only running on SD as a trial. I realize that running it on EMMC would be faster and more stable. But I have seen in forums that some people still have problems running ROMs on EMMC.
If the overheating issue becomes more of a problem (i.e. random restarts/shutdowns), I just want to know if there are any apps or ROMs which would improve the overheating issue. If there are any ROMs which would help, I most certainly do an EMMC install (as long as I'm not trading one problem for another due to the ROM being unstable).
Thanks again for everyone's input!

Technically, the stock ROM is not much different than Pac-Roms or CM10 or CM11 or Vanir, Omni or Android box Wasser. Sure there are elements that differ from device. We all need to be able to freely change to custom ROMs for our device and go back and forth. It's like overclocking your pc. The stock B&N Rom can be backed up and restored. Always do a back up on good SD card. Perhaps even upload your backed up ROM to a cloud source.
I will probably die with my HD+ in my hand.
Vanilla Droid is always best.

How you use it will effect heat more than any rom will (think games vs reading).
Though, I'm wondering if down clocking the cpu would help or hurt.
Or how about art instead of dalvic. Chrome instead of firefox. low brightness vs. full brightness, in 90 degree weather vs indoors. Etc. Course all that could be included under how you use it as well and all of it can affect heat output.
I have never worried about overheating when used within reason - they should not overheat except for a factory defect or outside of reasonable conditions of which the latter should be covered under technical boundaries and common sense. If your in direct sun and it feels too hot then move the device into the shade. etc.
ART didn't work
Switched to ART on my Nook HD+ using pac_ovation 4.4.4 08252014. The tablet works amazingly well with Dalvik. ART seems fine....can't tell much difference in speed. Wish this tab had a quad core. Truly good stuff with Omniswitch and Slim Recents along with the app bar. Love it.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Do you feel PAC gives you better smoother performance. What score do you get with antutu 5?
Do you still get screen flashing if you don't disable hardware overlay?
I'm running cm11 and it's OK but always looking around [emoji1]
Thanks.
