I'm just starting to get into the depths of my PDA2K and this site is GREAT!!!!!!! Since I'm just one step up from "The Village Idiot", I have a couple questions for all you pros.
After reading about using the extended ROM, and unlocking it and seeing what's in there, I think I've figured it out. Whatever CABs are listed in the config file will be installed upon a hard reset....correct? If true, and since I have only 3.5MB left in Ex ROM, can I put the other CABs I wanted installed in say /storage/CABs, list them in the config file and upon a hard reset they will be installed? Is there any reason to put them into Extended ROM rather than Storage? Is it alright to put CABs in from like games, Resco Explorer, WebIS Mail, etc.? Lastly is there a way to set the programs up where I don't have to go back and enter all the registration numbers again?
Thanks a ton for your help!!!
Tom
In extended rom they are not taking up your precious storage space on the device.

is it possible then to keep the installation cabs on storage card,
and also, can that path be set in the config file in ext rom?
what happens if a particular cab is not found after hard reset?
is the installation stuck or it just gives a warning and keeps on going to the next cab listed in the list.
Have a read of this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=83119#83119
It might be a bit to deep but should help you along the way.
1) You can keep a cab anywere you want
2) make sure your cab is read only as it can delete itsself after install.
3) to run a auto install from a differnet storage place you need to hack the reg (see thread).
In all if you have a sd card you could leave your EXt rom empty.
Hack the reg to the new postion and run the Autorun from there.
Have fun
Thanks for all the infor everyone! From what I've read in other threads I need to make sure that TPdisabled is set to off so that when programs like WebIS Mail and SplashID get installed I can touch the screen to make sure they install into the right place and other things. Correct? If this is correct, should I just remove TPdisabled all together?
Thanks again,
Tom
TPdisabled can't be set off, its either run or not run. So dump it and you wont have a problem
MDAIIIUser - Thanks for the link! I looked at it and you're right, it's pretty indepth and I'll have to read it more closely at a later time....like at work.
Question1: leochan2005 had a follow-up saying "why not use backup"? While I agree this would be easier, I'm assuming that by using your method one would get a much "cleaner" install than backing up all the crap that was on the system prior to the hard reset...correct?
Question2: It took me a long time to get my TMo settings setup on my PDA2K and I don't want to go thru that again. Is there a way to backup those settings so that they can be auto-configured at a later time? I read about making a personalsettings.CAB but haven't done it yet.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks! I take it it should be at the beginning of the config file so that I can access it. Correct?
q1)
Well the short of "why not use backup" is you can if you feel that:
1) Restoring Regedit values from a lower rom version
2) Restoring system applications form a lower rom version such as BT
are called for, wanted or even needed.
I fail to see that point as a upgrade is an upgrade and a backup is a backup. Now you could do a restore of your system data also (which you could also sync and that would be clean
Q2)
Most fo those settings are part of T-mobile.cabs found in Extrom, the rest would have been reg entries that you are going to have to hunt for and copy.
So sorry no way around reading the other thread (personalsettings.CAB)
MDAIIIUser - Maybe I should state what I'm trying to accomplish and you could give me a clue as to how to do it. A couple days ago I upgraded by BT on my PDA2K (generic from Expansys) to 1.0.0.3900 (or what ever the latest is) and I'm currently looking at upgrading my radio to 1.12, but that would require a hard reset. I'm not in the mood to go thru all the program installs and SMS/MMS tweaking again, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get all my programs and configurations back after the hard reset. I thought by incorporating the personalsettings.cab (for my Tmo settings) and your method I would be up and running pretty quickly. Yes? I have Sprite Backup, but I'm not sure if that's going to overwrite anything after the radio upgrade????
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Well my logic (that could be wrong) would say that a restore of your backup would get you to were you are now.
That you would need a restore as you have to do a hard reset after the 1.12 radion install.
But I can't answer the question will the radio be restored as well,
I don't know, I don't know the settings in the backup application, so am sorry I will have to let somebody else answer this one.
I want to try summiters new 2.3 rom, however, i have been flashin my cingular 8125 about 3 times a week, and im sick of setting it up from scratch each time. is there something out there or can you tell me what files i need to back-up to maintain settings for:
-what speed dials are assigned
-voice dials i have saved
-my tcpmp settings
-my browser cookies so i dont have to relog in to all my porn sites
-my settings for what alert tones to use and when to use them
is it possible to back any of that crap up and restore it after a new flash? thanks pimps!
Bah, no responses. I was hoping that there was a "backup my settings" app
WELL if you are using the same rom version each time which idont think you are. then spb backup is the way to go
i mean it costs a little and you can backup your sys data as well as your settings txt msgs and **** like that. Now if you upgrade to a different rom version everytime then its not likely that you will want to back up system data as it could screw up your wm5 and then you have to reflash again.
theres also sprite too but never tried it
tried spb and it doesnt work that great. it almost works perfectly but it doesnt hmm i might retry it tho cuz i think you can specify what **** to backup
http://www.spritesoftware.com/
I've got SPB too, but I've never reflashed. Under the Custom Backup you can choose 4 things-PIM, Tasks, Email & System Data. Does anybody know if it can use everything but the "System Data" setting to restore the PIM, tasks & email after a ROM upgrade? Would it save the registry changes too? Thanks.

yes u can restore the 3 things but not the registry because it is saved on the "System Data" portion of the backup.
and gizm0luvsu is correct if you restore from a full backup it will revert the rom [os] to the one u made de backup regardless of the rom you have currently.
You can backup your voice tag database between hard resets by copying the file CommandModel1.bin found under the windows folder to your pc or to the memory card. After rom upgrade copy it back to your windows folder and all your voice tags are back!
Create backup of windows\start menu - most programs that are on the storage card dont need a reinstall.
Create copy of pim.vol in the root directory of the device - contains contact and appt information. After flash change the new pim.vol to pim.vo and copy and paste old pim.vol (use total commander or gsfinder file explorers for this) and soft reset and you will have info back.
Create backup of windows\favorites - for all your internet favorites.
That will make restore a bit quicker than otherwise.
thanks meschle, thats what i was looking for!
Is it possible to create a *.reg file like you would in windows that can just be executed on your device importing all you registry changes. I'm not talking about a full backup...only a file that says change this value, change that value, add this dword, etc.
Possible?
Yes you can use the export function of phm reg editor (or others) of the keys you wanted to save and restore them later.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've searched the forums and google for an answer, and haven't found one:
I've gone to the PHM website: http://www.phm.lu/products/PocketPC/RegEdit/
Went to download, but I don't see a version for the OMAP processor and/or Windows Mobile 5 (WM5).
I tried using their MSI windows installer version, but when it launched ActiveSync's Add / Remove programs, PHM wasn't listed as an available application to install.
Which version do I download for use on the 8125?
Thanks, Mike

Thanks Dark, works like a champ, or rather like a registry editor champ
Hi All,
In the old days of the first generation XDA's we were able to save a copy of our device Rom configuration to an SD card. The data such as calendar entries etc. are saved separately and that's not a problem. But being able to basically save the device configuration is very useful if at some point we need to perform a hard reset.
Does anyone know how to do this with the TMO Wing?
not sure what exactly you mean by device configuration but maybe this is what your looking for:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
You are able to backup appointments, call logs, contacts, messages, speed dials, tasks, custom (pretty much any file you deem to be useful)
You are also able to create a backup schedule which in my case creates a back up for everyday of the week.
hope that helps...
EDIT: maybe you might find this more useful

You are able to make a backup of the entire rom to one file. But I think this will only work with the same ROM version as the backup. Let me know and i'll hook you up with a copy if you can't get your hands on one.
cheers
Sprite backup will make a self executing file that can restore your settings and data.
It works pretty damn good, I use it on a regualr basis, it has some kind of rom upgrade mode, if you are restoring a backup from a previous version, but I have never messed with it ..

Hi, I'm looking for full backup method of my TyTNII before playing new application installration as my insurance...
Because sometimes system freezed during my trial, especially trial of Japanese charactor installation. (We can not go to Windows Mobile screen from hTC logo page , so I have to system reset (2 Function keys + Reset)...then retry everything...>_<
I offen use Ghost for my PC to make a backup.
Do we have any idea of making backup for TyTNII such as Ghost?
Your ideas I appreciate!
I'am use spb backup, option full... bye

Also Sprite Backup 6.1 works nice in Kaiser WM6... i think better than SPB one... but only for me
I can personally attest that SPB Backup is a lifesaver. I was able to totally restore my Tilt last night after somehow managing to erase virtually everything.
Thanks all
I tried Spb last night, then could make a backup!
Thanks!!
I like Spirit Backup 6, which works really nice.
I have Sprite and Spb, my vote is Sprite. Although there is nothing wrong with Spb, Sprite gives me more options. Like backing up to the desktop.
When Sprite says it's going to "reset the device"....what does this mean? I don't want wipe everything off of the phone.
Also, how does it connect to the PC?
TIA
Sprite does a soft reset on your phone before it starts a backup, no it doesn't wipe your phone, just a normal soft reset. I'm guessing it does this just to make sure there are no programs running that can screw up the backup..
I too can attest to how well Sprite works. I've been using it since version 3 and I must say that version 6 works GREAT with the Tytn/Kaiser/Tilt. I by mistake half installed the MS Framework services (Don't do that!! ) and had to restore from backup which worked perfectly!
Now I'm not sure if this is a function of Sprite, or ActiveSync, but once you restore with this version you won't have to fully sync again which saves you from getting duplicate contacts, calendar events. With the older version you'd always need to do a full sync and ran into the issue with duplicate info..
Good luck!

OK, it resetting now.................
Now, it's backing up...............wow, 44.1M
Resetting again................
It worked! Backed up to storage card.
Thanks A Lot,
CR
With Spb, you can, using active sync, copy your backup file from your PPC storage card, to the hard drive of your PC. Then, if necessary, you can reverse and have a backup that you can use to restore in the event that you lose your micro storage card, or that it becomes corrupt.

Thanks. I'll be hitting the road today, but will try it this week sometime.
Does Sprite and/or SPB make an "image". Or is it just backing up "data"? Is the only way to make an "image" of your device to custom cook a ROM?
I use Sprite back-up...spb works good but the last time I used spb it didn't offer an option to restore after a ROM upgrade...don't know if spb added this feature but that's the only reason why I would choose Sprite over spb...
I use Sprite BackUp,very good program and restoring between different ROM versions or different devices.

Hello, I just uploaded the ROM of my diamond, but i have a problem.
The upgrade was OK and all the configuration too, but the browser won't connect.
It's a known problem from the Bouygues' ROMs.
There's a .cab called ''Bouygues-costumize.CAB'' that has wap and settings to connect to internet with their network, a startup image, but it blocks all browser connections. Why? Don't ask me.
With my old ROM, while the phone was installing Opera and other things, during the first installation, when the phone started to install the ''Bouygues-costumize.CAB'', you just had to press the reset button on the stylus slot, and wait for it to restart, with the browser working, because it was the last thing to be installed.
BUT, with the new ROM, the ''Bouygues-costumize.CAB'' is installed just before the PT_Manilla.CAB (I think it's called like this), so if I do the reset like I did before, I have no TochFLO 3D.
Can anyone help me????????
My ROM version is 1.93.483.4 FRE
My old ROM was 1.37.483.3 FRE
If someone knows how I can solve this problem, please tell me.
THANKS
Happened to me...try a different radio and/or rerun connection wizard
which ROM did you install after????
Thx
No one can tell me, a ROM that I can put on my Diamond????
Thx
No one??????????
c'mon.......
plz. some one tell me a ROM I can put on my diamond.....
a. stop bumping the thread, you will just get banned by a moderator lol
b. try checking settings of how the data is recieved, when i reset or change ROM i have to change how the data is recieved from Internet to T-Mobile Internet, otherwise it moans it cannot get a signal (because im not near my wifi network) and it will actually use the 3g like it's meant to.
a. I'm just looking for a solution to use Opera on my Diamond through my Wi-fi network.
b. My diamond is just 5 metres from my Wi-Fi antenna. If you had read my post and taken the time to understand it, you would of known that the problem is from a .cab file which is from my operator's ROM which BLOCKS Wi-Fi connections through browsers, and BROWSERS only. I can use Google Maps, and ANY other program with no problem through my Wi-Fi network. BUT NOT BROWSERS.

Extract the contents of the ROM using a Diamond-compatible Kitchen, delete the CAB file and all references to it, recook the ROM, flash it, enjoy.
Or just extract the ROM, open the CAB file using WinCE CAB Manager, check and see what modifications it is making to the device/registry, and delete those files/settings.

I don't knowhow to cook ROMs, or extract a CAB from a ROM.
Does some one know an official ROM (with no operator customization) which works??
thx
