Phone is dead after trying to Use Odin to flash to stock.. - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I was trying to flash new rom...so I flashed to stock...I used Odin3 V1.0 with 3 combo fix....but after the process finished in Odin...and it showed Reset....my phone should have rebooted right? But it didnt reboot...just got dead...I removed everything and tried to start it no use...even used jig...but its no responsive...I am not panicked (as it was my experimentation phone)...but trying to find what to do in that case...battery was full too....
Sorry for another "bricked phone" thread....

You get nothing at all even with a jig?
You may have fully bricked it. I know a person that can probably fix it if you want to put the $ into it. If not hopefully someone on here can help you.
The guy that fixed mine is known as connexion2005 on xda. He does the rom reviews on youtube.
Best of luck to you, I hope you get it going.

bricked a phone using odin....what went wrong?

I'm not new to this sort of stuff either. I used odin one time on my phone with no issues what so ever. my wife just had to make a warranty claim on her phone and we just got the replacement, asked her if she wanted me to root and put cognition on and she said sure
Well it had stock 2.2 on it and it wouldn't install clockwork recovery. upon reading that it was the update causing the problem I figured id just use odin to take the phone back to 2.2. I used a brand new charge cable I've only had for 3 weeks and things started fine but eventually the screen went black and odins progress bar stopped moving... 15 mins went by and nothing was happening... so I knew it was messed up and I unplugged it...
And $125 later I have an ins replacement on the way. Understand that I've been doin this for six months and this is the first time I've ever had a problem... so what happened? major hit to my confidence here!

Your prob is due to the new phones that come with 2.2 don't always work with one click Odin. Should use the recovery work around for it instead
should of known....ugh... wish I would of known this yesterday I would of been $125 richer and minus one angry wife. What about my phone now? its runing cognition 4.4.2. In light of what's happened I'm thinking about going back to stock myself and staying there... Will odin work on my phone or is there another way?

you could use the Odin one click for JH6, that'll take you back to eclair and you can use the Kies mini to update to 2.2 KB1
or...
you could use full odin to flash the 2.3.3 basic theres a great TUT for it. let me grab some links...

if your going to choose the gingerbread path make sure you READ a lot.
And I wouldn't lose to much confidence over it. If you look at some of the "big shots" they usually have hard-bricked a captivate.
Thanks for the reply... yeah my confidence is bruised but its hard to turn back now. Just def don't ever wanna find myself in this situation ever again. I am interested in going to gingerbread, in fact very interested. I've started to look into it I'm gonna read more before I make the big jump.

Next time, (hopefully there won't be a next time for you) you should first hit up samsung warranty first. If you have att, try them before samsung. I hard bricked my phone, sent it to samsung, they fixed it, no charge and sent it back. It took about 12 days, but it was FREE. Just an fyi.

What happens if your running a gingerbread rom with updated bootloaders and you decide that you want to go back to froyo and elair. Is your only option odin one click to restore the bootloaders?, what if your captivate is one of those unlucky ones that like to brick with odin one click? Would you be stuck on gingerbread?
You can use 2.2 roms with gb bootloaders, they are backwards compatible. Just make sure there are no bootloaders in the rom you flash.

Oh I see thanks.

Wait so if i flashed gingerbread bootloaders and my phone is not compatible with odin one click, is there no way to get back onto froyo/eclair bootloaders? I understand that you can still flash froyo roms without bootloaders but you can always make a mistake and flash froyo bootladers bricking your phone.
You can use the regular JH6 flash back just not the one with the three button mod, this is because the three button mod replaces 1 out of 2 bootloaders and they won't match but the JH6 only replaces both (or none not sure) and they do match

Check stuff from studacris on this forum. He's very knowledgeable and helpful. I saw somewhere where he wrote about using odin one click to flash stock with any build. You'll get a bootloop, or a soft brick, and then put in download and flash the jf6 secure with odin. That way you have boots and stock. Don't quote me on any of this. I'm going off memory and might have some of this wrong. Don't want anyone mad at me for the wrong info. Just read into his posts, before trying any of this. You'll definitely learn a lot.

get into download mode and use this package:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143
if you go to gingerbread and want to revert back to stock bootloaders you will have to use one click, even though you will end up in a bootloop and then use the package i posted to get it up and running completly sotck.

[Q] Need to go back to stock

Hey guys I need to send my phone back for warranty replacement and I am afraid to use Odin one click, because I know it bricked a friends phone recently beyond even JIG repair. His was an 11.02 or something and mine is a 10.07.
All I have flashed is DG's Cognition if that helps.
What should I do to go back to factory stock, will oneclick kill mine like his?
I cant afford to brick this one so I just need some confirmation, thanks guys.
Odin back to stock is the preferred method. While there is risk of brick, it generally doesn't happen that often. I have used it countless times.
But Odin will bring you back to stock and wipe any evidence from having a custom ROM.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SBSMALFJ
*Also, you could always say you were trying to update via kies and it stopped working (if anything went wrong) They won't ever know and it'll just get flashed stock firmware once they get ahold of it anyway.
I believe you can flash back to stock using OdinOneClick. But just to be sure you can flash this package instead
--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143
That package flashes everything but the two bootloaders and param.lfs. Meaning if anything goes wrong you still can use the combos or a jig to get back into download mode .
Just to double check you use:
Vol up, Vol down & power key to get into recovery mode?
&
Vol up, Vol down & usb cable to get into download mode?
It doesn't matter at all if you brick it. You're sending it in for a warranty replacement already. If odin one click bricks it tell them some bs about kies doing it.

Is it really necessary to post a useless post, with no information?
You really think I didn't search these insanely complicated and deep forums?
A friend of mine just ended up with a hard brick after using odinoneclick.
Something about a later build phone. But nobody seems to know much about this issue.
So needless to say I would like to be a bit cautious now.

About as necessary as you starting a new thread for a common issue instead of posting to an existing related thread. And the problem with later build phones (1008 and up) is also well documented in here. Be cautious all you want, but respect the forum by not starting redundant threads.

[Q] Captivate - DEAD?

I tried flashing Android 2.3 using Odin (downloaded the official ROM from XDA's Wiki) and although Odin said that the flash was successful, the phone itself doesn't work. When I tried turning the phone on, NOTHING. Tried plugging it into my laptop, NOTHING. Charging? You guessed it. NOTHING.
Long story short, the Captivate won't boot. The screen's all black. The phone won't get into download mode. And even Windows 7 doesn't recognize the phone anymore. HELP???

It sounds like what happened to me. I bricked my captivate within an hour of owning it. Then I developed UnBrickable Mod.
Do this.
1. Report this in the thread you downloaded this Odin flash. The Odin flash was made improperly. Or link it here and I will get it removed.
2. Use UnBrickable Mod to resurrect your device. This takes a steady hand for the hardware mod.
here is the crappiest news, i updated that wiki last night at 8 pm my time, 4 hours after you posted your issue. the old link, *i think* linked to a version with md5 checksum fail i believe, i was not sure so i changed it to a KNOWN working file link.
but if you had come accross my stock rom thread you would have been golden... the wikis arent that popular or often updated.
both files were not "created" they were the files used by keis to upgrade. but the first one someone uploaded to xda was corrupt, though i flashed the corrupt version by removing the md5 extention, and did not brick...
Thanks for the help, guys. Will install Ubuntu and see what the Captivate is doing.
Just to let you know, according to Windows 7, my phone's showing up as SEC S5PC110 Test B/D and no drivers are found.

Question on brick

ok i have a bootlooped phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604792&page=3 as in this thread says but i was wonder how to know if it is the bootloader that is ruined AKA BROKE unless i need a jtag would there be a way to find out if Bootloader is broke?
Can you get into download mode , either with the button combo or usb jig? If you cannot, then it's the bootloader. You probably have a kernel problem. If you flash a kernel that doesn't work for your rom, then you get a bootloop. Or if Odin fails to flash the kernel, happens to me every other day. But Odin eventually flashes successfully, no need to go back to stock.

If you can't get into recovery or download mode you might be in a bit of a pickle. Recently did that to my GS3 and I had to send it back to Samsung. I would find and try a USB Jig first, that might get you into download mode so you can use Odin to flash stock firmware back onto the phone. Just do a google search for Samsung USB Jig.
Thank you for your advise:thumbup:lol

Well that is the way you can do it, if the USB Jig gets you into download mode. If it doesn't, then you can have it JTaged. There are companies out there that offer JTag Service for some fee. Can't remember now but like 60-70 bucks maybe. Again, I'm sure it's just a google search away. Other than those two options I don't know if anything else, besides sending it back for warranty replacement.
