[Q] I'm an idiot! Undelete files after CWM wipe? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

While updating the ROM in my phone I did a CWM wipe without realizing it would wipe the external sdcard as well, which of course is where my Titanium Backup is stored. Does anyone know whether CWM reformats or just deletes the files, and whether there's a prayer of recovering things? I'm familiar with utilities which will look for image files and reconstruct them, but I'm more concerned with my TiBu files.

Its actually a proven fact that flash mem may always hold deleted data. The problem is finding a good application.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App

google / torrent download some " flash data restore software "

To follow-up, I used PhotoRec, which is an open source (free) package which runs on virtually all platforms. It's not the most UI-friendly package, but it's extremely effective at recovering all forms of files, including music, movies, and archives. I'm still working through, but I've recovered hundreds of photos, movies, and audio files, and have found most of the Titanium Backup files (though I'll need to manually restore the data, I think).
Nonetheless, it's good to know that it's somewhat possible to restore a great deal of lost data...

Never done it from a sd card before, but there is software out there. Another good reason to always remove your sim and external sd when flashing. Good luck... hope you get it back.

i found a program that restores my media files, its running atm stellar photo, media and video recovery. so i decided to buy it.
but i am more intrested in my data files (save games, configuration files for luchners, and other configuration files for stuff....)
now its just an experiment, i was thinking to mount the phone in linux (there are many ways to achive it in linux) and try to restore data from there since there is no option to restore data of ext partions in windows...
I have made it a habit of keeping weekly backups from rom manager. Just the thought of what your going through and the amount of pain that comes with it makes me tremble. I royally f'd up my phone 5 times already and I just restore my backup and back to normal without the headaches.
Good luck with your recovery mission.
You can use PhotoRec and/or TestDisk from your Linux machine.
This happened to me once before, but luckily I am taking weekly backups of internal and external SD to a portable HDD.

Well I dont mind loosing a weeks game data, since I am not playing much games these days. But if you want to backup those folders you can use the app 'Titanium Media Sync' to automatically backup selected folders to your dropbox account.

[Q] Upgrading after root

Hi!
Well, I rooted my phone yesterday and I now want to upgrade it from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 (if there is any diffrent?) I'm going to use ODIN. My question is, do I need to re-root after the upgrade? Will I lose any apps after upgrading?

Moving fast aren't you
Yes there is a difference I'm not sure but usually in speed, battery and features. If it is a stock from then yes you will need to re root as it will probably come with a kernal.
Apps: if you tick repartition and use a pit file then it will factory reset your phone. It do it anyway, I'm not 100%. Apps you can use is,
app list backup: it will make a list of all your apps. For those downloaded from market it will have market links.
SMS backup and restore: self explanatory
titanium backup: Saves the data and app..need root for this. So you may need to gain root again after flashing.
Couple of tips... use a pit and wipe its just less likely to cause conflicts. Make a nandroid backup from recovery. Your internal SD card data will be saved, (where your pictures are usually stored) but its best to copy all that to comp as well

Ah, okay. So you recommend me to factory reset it? Is there an app to backup all the files to my computer? I'm running Titanium backup right now but if I factory reset it, the backup will be gone, right?
Yes I suggest factory reset.
No because that is stored on your partition. Only if you select format SD card or format pictures etc then you will loose it. You can tell titanium back up to move and keep the folder on your external...
To transfer files you just need to connect your phone to PC and use as a mass storage device. It should pop up in my computer as a new removable drive. If not install the drivers via kies.

What about this: Moving almost every app to my external SD-card, using Titanium backup to store all my highscores etc, somehow get the backup to my PC, removing the SD-card and then facotry resetting it? Will my apps still work?
You can try it, im not sure ive never done it.
I would assume that would not work because im sure a file in the system would still need to know that the app is present. If you do a factory reset then that will be deleted. However it is likely that when you re-install the app from the market that it will realise and everything will be back to normal, but then there is also the possibility that the old files will be deleted with the new installation...lol
Endless possibilities. In the end try it but make sure you have a nandroid backup incase something goes wrong.
Use app list backup for the apps and titanium backup for the data backups (high scores, game data etc) However restoring data from TB can cause conflicts which will mean that apps wont work and you'll have force closes.
Good luck let us know how it goes

where do i put the BOOTSTRAP.APK. what folder?

where does bootstrap.apk go
finally managed to root the 5.7
everytime I power on and hold M i got to the selection screen.
but every selection just powers on the phone normally.
that means i need bootstrap right? I have it from 5.6 but i dont remember where it goes because my old droid screen took a dump
I dont even know how I managed to make a backup on my old phone with no vision, but i did.
PLEASE HELP
okay so I got bootstrap working and I restored my backup from 5.6
now my phone isnt turning on. its stuck on the red eye.
anyone know what I can do?
NEVER MIND IT JUST TOOK AWHILE.... thanks anyways
Oh God. This sounds ugly... You are selecting BP Tools from the M+Power menu, right? Secondly, it doesn't matter where you put the APK on the phone, what matters is installing the APK and installing the recovery. Finally, what kind of 5.6 backup did you restore? Apps from Titanium Backup, My BackUpPro, etc. or a nandroid backup in recovery?
Also, can we move this to general? TYIA.

Not sure how to move this thread to a different area...
I restored a nandroid backup in recovery
is it suppose to be missing certain files because I had to drag a bunch of store from my old droid to my comp and then to my new one
(like photos, the roms folder for my emulater, bloat freezing folder for script manager.)
Now my gallery dosnt work. pictures wont show when i go to gallery --> my library
but i can see them in astro in the DCIM folder.
should the NANDroid have backed all that up and restored it???

That stuff wasnt on my SD card. it was all on the phone.
could my phone have not finished backing up and made the backup file anyway? my old phone screen when out and I made the backup in recovery without being able to see it.
Is there anyway to fix my gallery so I can access my pictures again?
They may not have been on your EXTERNAL SD card, but they were on some form of storage, probably the internal sd card.
Also, you should never have restored a 5.6 nandroid over a 5.7 system. It would have reverted your /system partition and can cause issues with 5.6 and 5.7 components.

Ya neither sd gets backed up. It would cause some storage issues if you had mostly full storage, you would not have room for the backup.
As for your other question someone else may know. The 860 only ever had 1 update so I've never had to deal with different system versions

Let's move to the thread in General.

Enormous NAND backup sizes

So since sdcard is now part of /data, when I make a NAND backup the size is almost 4GB, since I have a bunch of music stored locally from Google Music. Is there anyway to get TWRP to ignore the sdcard directory when backing up (since it doesn't get wiped anyway) so that each backup I make isn't ginormous? I'm already down to only 15GB left on this phone. I know I could have it just not backup the data partition, but then restoring from a backup would only restore the OS and not the apps and configuration I previously had (which is kinda the whole point of a backup, since otherwise I could just fresh install a new ROM).
cant you just copy them over to your computer? and keep one on the phone for safety?
Just created a nandroid backup with CWM touch, mine came out as 2.1GB, not sure why your backup is so large
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Mine are usually around 1.5GB. But I don't keep music and videos on mine.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Since the /sdcard data is sharing with the same partition as the /data doing a nandroid backup would depend on how much space is consumed by your sdcard.
So I guess nothing I can do, then? Thanks anyway.
Does this mean a Nandroid backup of the One would backup photos and media too?

Yes!
Problem is that Google Music cache is in /data/data folder, so Twrp backs it up. Solution is to create a folder on /sdcard and symlink the Google Music cache folder to it. Twrp won't back it up because it doesn't follow symlinks nor does it backup /sdcard. There are several posts on the subject, just search.

I don't believe it does, I don't think Nandroid would perform backup functions differently on different devices but coming from the SGN I - I can tell you that all Nandroid backups are basically settings and OS files as well as Apps / App Data. For the most part, when you do a Wipe / Format on your phone, it is only removing the OS files and installed Apps. It does not backup your photos / videos as it never really removes that data to begin with and so you should see your stuff there even after installing a fresh copy of the ROM. If you go into advanced functions in CWM and format your card, then you will wipe the entire device off.
IIRC CWM started taking nandroid backups very differently from a few versions ago, there's now a "blobs" folder in the backup folder and that is the one that grows exponentially in size. I believe that was done to only make incremental backups easy but the downsize is grows massive.
I cannot give you a guaranteed answer if deleting the blobs folder is safe or not but I have deleted it in the past and eventually resorted to just keeping the most recent backup by deleting all backups / blobs and then doing a fresh backup.
click compression and mines 1 gig
A nandroid backup also backs up the data directories and your downloaded Goggle Music songs are in that data directory. Therefore whenever your do a nandroid backup, the songs will be backed up as well, increasing your final size...

The recovery may very well perform nandroids differently on "data/media" services such as the htc one. Check out http://teamw.in/DataMedia

Ok just to answer my own question.
I just took a nandroid backup of One of my phones and restored it to my other one.
Music and Gallary did not come across.
If anyone else wants me to verify anything I'm more than happy to as I have both phones in front of me and all my settings and profiles are there, just no media.

Trying to backup my Note 8 and can't seem to find a solution for it.

I have a non rooted note 8 that I am trying to backup before factory reset and then unlocking the bootloader.
I have a lot of data there. Around 55 gb spread around various folders.
I am trying for the past few days to backup and didn't find any way to backup everything on my phone to my pc.
What I have tried so far:
1. Searching for various softwares and guides. Most of them talk about cloud which I don't use or have. I also want a local backup.
I will add that there is no reliable software that backup everything including apps, media, etc.
2. Tried regular ADB pull command. Every time I tried that, instead of the 55gb of storage I have on my phone I get a folder with less then 20gb on my pc.
That means a lot of stuff are missing. I then kept searching and found out ADB doesn't work best from the android OS so its better to use custom recovery in order to perfom ADB pull comnmands.
3. I installed twrp on my note 8 and tried to ADB pull. I get "0 files pulled". Further checking the problem it seems I need to "mount" from twrp.
Tried mounting but I get internal storage 0mb. Trying to select the "data' in mount options doesn't work. I get no error but it doesn't get selected.
Now my note 8 is stuck on twrp and I can't get back to my android OS. When I try to restart in either get bootloop or returning to TWRP.
I am looking for a way to backup everything in my phone. Ideally with all the filesystem and directory intact. So finding my pictures and music would be easy in the future when I need them.
I am not sure how to proceed from here. I did a lot of research and digging on my end but didn't found any solution to this.
Thank you for your time.
You backup critical data and apps like Poweramp that allow backup files.
Form a complete plan for backing up all critical data redundantly to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.
Mind what needs to be backed up before you need it like contacts, bookmarks and so on, develop a plan that works.
Copy/paste folders to the PC. Check folder count and data size against original. Check that the data is readable. Never compress or clone media files/databases and never encrypt backup data drives. Backup often or risk losing the new data.
Never really on SmartSwitch or any app as a stand alone solution to backup critical data!!!
They can fail miserably.
Lol, my N10+'s backup is close to 400gb, I use the SD card as a data drive then redundantly back it up. My N10's can be fully reloaded using the SD card.
ColorNote can open hyperlinks directly from the app, can auto backup to the SD card or cloud; I use it for bookmarks and more.
Use ApkExport to make installable copies of all apps, updates and as backups. Install directly from those copies, no Playstore needed.
smart switch is probably the best you can get plus they do local backups

Not suitable for stand alone critical data backup.
Once you lose or corrupt a database, it's gone forever... can you handle that?

Thank you very much guys. I will try those things.+
Before I do that tho. I need to fix the TWRP probem.
Can you elaborate on the problem with the dm-verity? I didn't changed the bootloader or tried flashing roms or anything.
I need to access the phone for the backup. But I don't know what to look for.
Looking dm-verity online gives me weird solutions such as flashing Magisk or unlocking the bootloader which obviously doesn't help because I don't want a root and need the data.

Thank you very much guys!
I was able to restore my phone by flashing the stock rom with Frija and Odin.
I even downloaded the newest version with Frija because I couldn't manage to find my exact current version. And it worked very well.
For the backup I did as you said and used APK Export for the apps. Its such a great app, I wish I knew about it sooner.
To transfer all the files and media to my PC I used a micro sd card reader for my sd card contents.
For the internal storage I tried using FTP and it was much better then I expected. It is kinda sad that using Wifi to transfer so much files is so much faster and stable then a direct USB connection. Its really baffling. But anyway.
Transferring the data was pretty smooth. Worked much better then ADB pull.
Thanks you again guys and I hope people having trouble would be able to find this thread helpful.
