[Q] Connection behaviour like Nokia? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hello guys,
this is my first thread here in this forum. I got my TyTN-II 2 Weeks ago, a used device for 99 Euros. A good deal, i think. After playing around with some of the Roms i found here, i found M-Diamond 1.2 to fit most of my needs. When first used the phone, i disliked the behaviour of connecting to hsdpa, 3g or something else that was inside coverage, and not releasing the connection. The longest time i experienced was 3 hours of open but inactive connection. I found out, WMLongLife could help me greatly, together with the option to kill connections when standby is enabled i thought there shouldnt be any connection at last, when i leave the phone unattended with 1 minute auto standby.
But that was an error. Yesterday i was driving around in my car, having paired the phone with my bluetooth car-hifi and while listening to the great sounds of dj doboy i heared these noises from my phone establishing a connection! the noises weren't all the time. it seems it was some sort of keep-alive. no, it wasnt the sound of the phone registering to another antenna. this occured even when i stood in a parking lot. what the hell? i double checked the configurations but everything seemed fine. but why the hell is the phone establishing a connection.
Second issue may depend to the first one, since it touches connections, too. When i reach my Work or my Home, whose access points are stored in my phone, it connects to them... and keeps the connection. all the time! even if its unused. that drains the battery to zero in a very short time. I looked over the configuration of WMLongLife, but found nothing helpful related to switching wlan of when unused. i found one option inside the wifi configuration page, telling windows mobile to switch off wlan after x minutes. i tried the lowest setting and waited. it disconnected and disabled wlan. but instead of re-activating and re-connecting it when trying to use the browser, it used the 3g-connection WMLongLife was establishing automatically (what was correct because i told it to give the browser 3g access when no wlan is connected).
my old nokia (n95) establishes a wlan connection only if needed and kills it when the establishing program closes. too, there was a tool called smartconnect, where the user was able to put a stack of connections and create one single connection out of it, enabling the nokia to choose itself what available connection should be used. i used to put my home wlan in first place, second was the work wlan and third was the mobile net. i tested and trusted this constellation even in standby mode because it does what it promised. one Battery charge lasted about 5 days.
Windows Mobile connects.. to wlan forever, searches wlan networks forever, connects to mobile net sometimes for whatever even if connected to wlan, even if told not to do so, draining both my flatrate and the battery power in an useless way. mail synchronization is enabled any 2 hours only, weather info is disabled. one battery charge lasts a half day when not making any calls. so what keeps windows of connecting all the time?
is there any way to adapt the behavior of the nokia phone to my kaiser? maybe the connection architecture is not able to do this because windows uses its connection points in another way like nokia does. But perhaps there is a tool to do this?
Any suggestions?

Diamond Wi-Fi Problem

I have recently procured an HTC Diamond mobile and is facing the following problem:
I have a Linksys Router at home. When I switch on the Wi-Fi in my Diamond, it gets connected to the router. In the status, I can see the signal strength, Tx, Rx rate etc. But when I open the browser (both opera & IE), the web pages does not open. Error message stating check the url or does any other programme using the internet works? appears. Even my weather does not get updated. Using the same router, I am able to connect my laptop as well as my desktop to Internet.
When my diamond is synced using active sync, my mobile is able to connect to the Internet & Weather application also get updated.
Kindly help me to resolve this issue and make diamond connect to net using wi-fi.
Thank you in advance.
I have the same problem sometimes
I just changed parameter in settings -> connections -> wireless lan -> power mode -> "best performance" instead of "best battery" and it seems to work now.
I'm new to WM, so I don't know if it's a bug: when I don't use my phone I press the power button, or I wait it to go to "sleep mode" in 40s.
When I press power button to reactivate the screen, I can see in the first seconds that the wlan was disconnected and connects again.
So it seems that wifi is always disconnected when the phone is in sleep mode? That means no mails can be received ? Can anyone confirm?
Thanks
Hi there for both of you!
I had a connection problem with my Diamond at home. It was almost the same as tkak just I couldn't figure out whether ActiveSync connects or not. I managed to bypass this to set my routers DHCP timeout from 1 week to 3 hours and it all went away. The network status showed periodic connect/reconnect during the problem so it might be a different prob than yours.
Peio64:
WM6 keeps WiFi connection asleep during sleep mode. Imagine the battery usage if it was connected to WiFi all the time. So be happy with that and beside it is usable. WiFi automatically tries to connect to the closest hot-spot if it was connected before each time you switch on. Normally it shouldn't take more than 5-10 seconds and the whole process can be followed on the top bar.
Mails: Use DirectPush and GPRS connection and e-mails will arrive instantly. Google for setting this up. With Wifi I dunno - if you schedule ActiveSync for a periodic check whether your WiFi will be used or a new GPRS connection. I think GPRS can be used while the device is asleep but I'm not sure. Someone should test this. Probably whichever is quicker to build up a connection will be used for data transfer. (Note: on some forum I read that if you disable GPRS auto check with a tweak battery will last longer so I guess this means that GPRS is always connected.
Regs, Cina.
Does your diamond obtain an IP adress from your router, and is the connection setup as 'connects to internet'?

Thank you for your answer,
I had a SE P1i before, and wifi was connected all the time with push mail. With the diamond and its weaker battery, I set up my mails schedule to connect every 15 min so wifi only needs to be active every 15min, even in sleep mode, I don't want it to be connected all the time this is of course a battery waste.
HSDPA is connecting in sleep mode there's no problem with that, I just wish to use wifi for mails when I'm at home as my data plan is unlimited for web surfing but only 10Mo/month for pop/imap connections.
BTW I don't use the "keylock" option, is it different from sleep mode in this case? I can't see the advantage of keylock versus sleep mode
I had an ETEN M600 for ages before and I found that for sync it always used GPRS even if WiFi was available. The cause for this was GPRS was available while device is asleep so it can start syncing immediately after wake up (does it needs to wake up for sync?). So you probably have to switch GPRS (HSDPA) off while you're at home.
Keylock is for locking hardware buttons and touchscreen while it is active. (You won't dial up anyone from your pocket). It has nothing to do with sleeping just if you set up the registry tweak the device get locked (Keylock software is started) if you press power to send it to sleep. (I've almost written "off" but it is obviously not true - you can switch it off with a long press on power = soft reset).
Hope this helped a bit.
Cina
Okay thank you, I checked and HSDPA is connecting every 15min in sleep mode even with wifi ON. If I switch data off I suppose nothing connects and no mail is received, which is I think it's a weird behaviour.
By the way, I have set my data connection to swich off 10 seconds after not being used, and it works perfectly and reconnects automatiquely when it needs to. But for the wifi I can find that option, it's stays connected all the time when I use the phone, even if I don't need to. Is it possible?
Maybe it's due to the fact that it's always checking if there are new networks? On Symbian UIQ3, you can pre-configure networks, give manually priorities for each networks (1.Wlan work, 2.Wlan home, 3.3G etc..) and for each application (web, mail, etc). When the phone connects it checks if the network "1" is available, if it's not it checks the network "2", and once it's connected it doesn't check anymore. Is there a WM6 advanced network tool like that?
(Sorry for my english)
I did the following and now it gets connected to the web:
I just changed parameter in settings -> connections -> wireless lan -> power mode -> "best performance" instead of "best battery".
I do not know why this needs to be done like this.
Thankyou all for resolving my problem
I'm experiencing problems connecting to my WL Router (DrayTek 2820n) using WiFi when the router is set to Auto instead of to a specific channel. I've noticed from some threads for other mobiles that people are exprience similar problems. Does anybody knows what is the story around which channels are supported on WiFi: 1-11, 1-12 or 1-13. My router is set to 13 by default. In addtion to that Diamond has problem to connect to some channels even in the 1-11 range. So how can I check, which channels are supported and for which region?
Edit: I did further testing and it became obvious that when using Auto channel selection on the router, Diamond wouldn't connect. When selecting manually any channel between 1-11 it works OK, but when selection channels 12-13 it stops working, which makes me believe that the Diamond doesn't have support for the channels for non-US regions.
Does anybody have any idea how to change wifi region to support 12-13 channels as well? So far I couldn't find anything on the net that would help me doing it. Is it possible that it might be WM 6.1 issue and not Diamond?
HI I am actually having a diffirent issue but still related to wi-fi. When my phone awakes from sleep, it promts me to connect to my wi-fi server at home, when it was already connected jus minutes before. I have to re-enter the pass phrase everytime it awakes from sleep. This does not seem normal as my 6.0 touch didnt do that.
Any takers on this?
For more channels, it depend of US version or EU version. You need to changer your firmware but the problem is that in France for Internet you use PPoA and Belgium PPoE and I do not know if in the US they use the same so you will probebly losse your ability to connect to the Internet. Having more channels is not interesting because you need a hope of 5 between channels ( ex : ch1 + 5 = ch 6 and ch6 + 5 = ch11) between ch1 and ch6 place a ch11 for avoiding interferances. In 802.11g that is a question of scheme.
Sorry for my poor English.
Problem connecting to home network wifi
Hi, i've been using diamond to connect to my wifi home network but since few days is not possible anymore even if nothing was changed in the settings of the router.
The phone recognize the network as available, i push connect, it comes connecting but instead of connecting to the netwok it goes back to available.
Password is correct and the setting are the same as few days ago.
Any idea which setting should be modified?
Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,
I have one problem with my diamond. I disabled the "data transfer" with the improved comm manager. I usually use wifi when i'm home, however, i've seen that even though wifi is active, HSDPA connection is activated as well so i got charged, this sometimes happens when updating weather data or downloading emails.
Anyone with the same problem?
Yes - having he same problem.
I have WIFI at home and at work - so i want to use GPRS only when i am outside. never managed to do this - except when i kill GPRS fully - and even then Opera, the weather and push-mail wont work. :-(
WiFi Channels 12-13?
I need to bump up this issue again.
I can't find anywhere in this forum how would you change your WiFi channel range from US to EU (i.e. 1-11 to 1-13). My Diamond was purchased in Australia and I was hoping that the new SW upgrade would rectify that, but it looks to me that's not the case. Any idea if that can be done in registry?
Thanks.
Change Channel range from 1-11 to 1-13
***Bump***
Has anybody got any ideas how to increase the channel range from 1-11 to 1-13?
Hi, I am having a seperate problem from all that are listed. I have the linksys rangeplus router, and my Diamond wont even detect my network when it searches, yet my computer and PS3 do fine. Can anyone help me?
another problem...
Hi,
i have a problem with the wifi on my Diamond aswell..
I have a router at home which is encrypted. When I try to connect to it, I type the encryption key and it says Connected but i cant surf any pages. When i go back to wifi settings my home network switches between Not available and Connecting...
However, when i remove the encryption, everything seems to work fine. Since i dont want to treat my neighbors with free internet, does anyone have any tips for me?
(it is set to Best performance... +i'm sure i enter the right key...)
Thanx
The same over here... I found out, that some of cooked ROMs had this problem, but official worked. Before I couldn't connect via WPA2-PSK AES, all other encryptions worked. Until now... I tried to flash official ROM and RADIO, but it doesn't work anymore. I'm pretty sure it must be hardware problem. I need to send my Diamond to get fixed, but... The closest repair centre is in Prague (GSMobile)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!BUT BE AWARE!!!!!!!!!!!
I owned previously Qtek8310. After I send them my Qtek to replace the joystick, it came back with broken motherboard... This repeated 3 times and everytime they broke something else. I've got my Qtek8310 back as a total crap, destroyed and scratched... I called and send a claim to HTC Europe in London, but nothing happened since then. I don't believe them anymore. If you love your Diamond avoid to get it fixed in GSMobile!

HTC diamond disables Wifi itself

Having my Diamond for a month now, today i noticed strange behavior : My WLAN/WIFI disables it self.
For a month Wifi worked fine (connects to a Linksys WRT350N).
At first I didn't notice, but while surfing the net I notice that new pages didn’t load. I looked in my WLAN settings in Commanager which was says that WLAN is disabled. No problem, enabling it again. But still in the Commanger, I see it disables itself roughly within 5 seconds. And again and again.
Surprised I did some softresets but that didn’t help either. Than I remembered reading that somebody had troubles with the powercable when the device was too hot.
In the Netherlands is was quit hot today and i was using my phone outside. I put my device in the fridge for some tens of minutes and after that WLAN works fine again.
Other seeing this behavior too??
PC connected
Not use connected to PC with USB cable or with power cable.

Has anybody had this problem with their data connection?

I've tried several radios and none of them have fixed the problem. Even when I have full bars in an HSDPA area, the first time I connect using Facebook or Opera or try to update weather or check my email, the icon shows I'm connected but apparently I'm not because I'm unable to download data. If I disconnect and then reconnect, it works perfectly the second time. If I keep it connected, it continues to work without a hiccup. I only have the problem when I connect for the first time after a few hours of being disconnected. I don't leave it connected all the time because it torches my battery. This quirk seems weird to me. I hope somebody has experienced this and can help me fix it.
I'm on AT&T and have the Tilt.
I have had this problem in certain areas. Near Dulles, VA, Greenville, SC, and a few other semi-major towns. I have no clue why it does this. I usually end up turning off 3G and going GSM only. Then I don't have that issue. Granted I loose the high speed connection, but it just has so much trouble in those areas. I have even tried multiple radios to no avail.
proxy server
If you have ATT, you need to remove the hidden proxy after disconnecting your data connection, then start an internet accessing program. The cab can be found under your windows directory.

[Q] Wi-Fi Woes

Ok I have a very iritating problem.
My captivate works amazing in all ways... except one. When I'm at home connected to Wifi, within a few mins of me putting the phone down, or even mid use, the wifi will just stop working. The icon still shows it to be connected however no apps are able to actually get internet. A quick pulldown of the quick access menu and tapping wifi off and back on again gets it going great... for another 5 mins. Then the same thing happens.
Its been like this ever since I got the phone, even after flashing different roms. Now i'm running a Linksys Wireless - N router - maybe they're not playing nice?
I dont think its a hardware fault because when I serve wifi, IE the captivate is an infrastructure mode access point for 3g, it stays on consistently and my laptop can tether for 2 hours or more.
Anyone know what might be causing this?
Thanks
When you have wifi on, go to menu settings and 'Wireless and network'. In Wi-Fi settings you can change the Wi-Fi timeout.

Try goin to settings->wireless and networks-> wifi settings (menu key)advanced and set the sleeping policy to never
I've done that...
i *Think* i've fixed it. I was using WPA2 IPK encryption or whatever.. Switched back to the 64 bit crappy WEP. Wifi was on all night and all morning with no cut out.
Might be just another linksys-is-crap situation.
HI, I figured I keep my wifi woes within a singe thread so.
I have an old D Link WBS 2310 router.
I recently got a message from AT&T that I'm near my data limit. This surprised me as my last cycle I barely got near 500mb. Since my bill isn't ready yet, I can't see exactly what it is I'm doing to use so much data.
TO be safe I figured I'd pull out my old router and set it up. After hours of hassle getting it to work on my new computer, I wasn't able to get my Captivate to hook up to it.
My laptop works fine. It gets a fast wifi signal, but my phone just says "Obtaining IP address" for a while and then gives up.
My phone gets wifi at work, at friends', at coffee shops - but not at home.
I've tried this with no encryption, WEP encryption and WPA2 encryption.
Each time my laptop would hook up to the wifi but my phone wouldn't.
I searched some other forums and found similar problems with HTC phones.
Some answers say that D Link sucks. But that answer applies to other brands as well.
Do I need "n" wifi, rather than "g"?
I don't want to buy another router only to find it still doesn't work.
Any help?

part of the IEEE 802.11n standard is backward compatibility with all previous 802.11 standards IIRC, so there should be no need to buy a new n device.
HOWEVER, i am also having issues with my wi-fi and my g capable router. i will meddle around with some phone and router settings to see if i can fix this, this is one area were i can actually be of some use on this forum
Hi. It turned out the wifi was broken on my captivate. I reset it to stock and it's all better. It had been working up to the previous day so I assumed that it was still working. The router goes down intermittently in general, so I've ordered a new one to see what's up.
Hi, I'm back! So after resetting the phone and getting wifi to actually connect (rather than being stuck searching for IP address), I'm now having the exact same problem is the OP. The OP seems to have solved this by switching to WEP. I tried this and it doesn't work. My timeout is set to never. Also, it's the same at home (I replaced my router) as well as at Starbucks and a friends house.
I'm connected, but can't download or sync. It works initially and then stops, and then comes back in briefly and then stops, all the while "connected." Sometimes I can fix it temporarily by turning off wifi and then turning it back on.
SO what's the deal? Is it a hardware problem? Is there some secret magic code?
edit: Just disabled encryption - same problem.

Dodgy wifi

Has anybody had any problems with their WiFi not connecting? My device seems to fail to connect to wifi after a couple of days and just sits trying to connect. Toggling WiFi doesn't seem to resolve it, and I have to reboot the entire phone to get it back online.
No problem here.
Connects very quickly, never seen it fail to connect, even on my works dodgy BT homehub 3, which used to tie my old Z3 compact up in knots..
Yep.I thought that Snapdragon 835 cause this problem. Xi oami 6., ZTE z17 and Op5 had the same question with WI-FI connection.

I have a sd835 s8 and I haven't had any wifi issues whatsoever since launch. It's a sample size of 1, but I don't know if it's truly due to the sd835
I haven't had any WiFi issues. In fact my WiFi connections have improved using the XZ1 compact over the X performance (the X performance dropped its WiFi connections 3 times during my data transfer to the new phone)
I've had my XZ1c for about a week now (European model) and it connects to my home network (5G) normally. Signal strength is fine, although the galaxyS6 it replaced definitely had superior reception. I do have wifi issues, but only when already connected to the network. When the phone is asleep (screenlocked) it seems to lose an active connection. The wifi connection should be on at all times, even asleep. It will show the wifi symbol, but data apps don't load, and it will have lost the connection as remote for spotify connect (playing on my reciever). It will also switch to mobile data at random times with normal wifi signal strength (even though I toggled this function off in the developper settings).
I'm not sure if this is something that can be fixed through system updates. I haven't seen any forum posts with similar problems though, so I'll try to document what is actually happening before I contact Sony support.
I bought the US version and flashed the UK firmware to get the fingerprint reader to work. No issues whatsoever with this phone. No Wi-Fi issues, overheating, signal strength, battery, nothing. Everything works just perfectly.
Same issue here. Mine is Europe (NL) version. The upload and download speed can be very unstable. And especially when I take it a bit far way, even you see that it's connect to the wifi with full signal strength, it said internet is unavailable.
I'm not sure if this related to the system update of last weekend or not.
Further to my issue. My phone will drop wifi connection and repeatedly try and connect - it usually cannot see any other networks at the time. Restarting the wifi on the phone, or rebooting the access point do not help. Running a packet sniffer on the LAN shows no activity, which indicates the issue is to do with wireless handshaking.
The problem occurs every few days and the only way to resolve it is to reboot the phone, which fixes it instantly.
I contacted Sony and they told me to do a complete reset on the phone, this didn't work. I updated my findings and pointed out that it's seems to be a firmware compatibility issue. Of course, you only get to talk to first line, and as a reset didn't work, they want me to send it off for a warranty repair (which of course will be returned with "no fault found" as no doubt their wifi will be different enough for it not to have been picked up on day 1 testing).
I'm currently trying to gather a bit more information on the fault, e.g. does it only happen on my home wifi etc. I've disabled channel bonding but that didn't help, and I've not jiggled my DHCP settings after seeing plenty of posts describing wifi problems on Oreo for other phones.
It doesn't happen frequently enough and I don't have the time to delve deeply into the network to identify the cause.
One interesting thing was that it went funny at home, but it was working when I got to work. When I got home it still couldn't connect. So I suspect it's to do with a particular compatibility issue somewhere.
no problem here conecting to 5 and 2.4 wifis...

So far my wifi has been fine...
Mine is worst, i couldnt get it to connect at all but all my other device including xperia xa, xzp, laptop, Ps4 PS3, everything connect without any issue whatsoever, already excahnged once and still the same.
Think mine is struggling with either a single access point or VLANs. I need to dig further, but that requires buying a new AP - this phone is getting more and more expensive!
exactly same issue as Dashers describes with my XZ1c. I am not watching it closely, but it seems that it is hapenning after around 2 days online. Never happened before on same network with my previous Z3c, which had run months without restart and any problems whatsoever (till its display died

I have more or less the same issues, and a reboot always solves it. It happens with both routers form ASUS and Draytek.
Additionally I see issues with Spotify connect dropping or not being found on my Sonos (hardwired to LAN), but not so much to Chrome Cast Audio on the same network.
I don't have a problem connecting to wifi, but I seem to have a different issue. Even though wifi scanning is toggled off in settings, my phone still seems to be scanning according to Battery Historian. I think this is one of several things contributing to my high idle drain. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, wifi and BT scanning are both turned off in settings and have been since the beginning, but both seem to be happening anyway according to Google's Battery Historian tool. When I go back in to see if they've been toggled on by an app or something, they still appear to be off.

I have this exact problem. One second its 100% signal and is workin as expected. The other second it just drops and tries to reconnect like crazy. I have even had moments when i am unable to find my wifi after said disconnect. All my other devices is working like normal on my wifi. Using Asus n66u 5ghz.
I have been having the same issues as mentioned above with my XZ1 compact(european). My issues with dropping wifi signal seems to be happening when there are two different wifi signals to choose from. They are both on my local network. One is an extender due to the size of my house. When it can detect both signals, it can't make a decision on which one to choose. Once I remove a device(forget wifi device), it stays connected to the other with no problem. Since it isn't trying to compete with the other.
Has there been any improvement on this issue?
