Recently I've been seeing Nook Color's at $300 vs $250. Is there a new version out, and if so, anyone know what the difference is?
BTW, is there any way to tell if a NC on the shelf is the original Nook Color with the light sensor? I heard they changed the serial numbers when they change occurred. If so, how can I tell by looking at the serial number or is it obvious in some other way?
Thanks!
I don't know about the other questions, but the $300 price is just Home Shopping Network's ripoff rate. They do throw in a $5 value microSD card and a bunch of free public domain e-books (that anyone can download legally).

Haven't heard anything about a new version, but I'm guessing the light sensor got pulled out of manufacturing at the last second, maybe due to cost considerations. The early Nooks have an extra "circle" under the clear plastic about 1cm left of the "n" button, where I'm guessing the light sensor was supposed to go. You can see a picture of it here.
I don't believe newer nooks have the circle. I guess you could check a tear-down thread. In any event, it doesn't seem to be functional.

Anyone know of any hardware differences between the two currently selling, BNRV200 and BNRV200A units?

Looks like they're exactly the same thing. The FCC ID and IC ID say "BNRV200A" while the Model No. is BNRV200.
I'd be interested to know if there are any Model No. BNRV200A units out there but haven't seen any on XDA.

So far only thing I have been able to notice up close and personal with a few demo units and my own unit is that there one obvious difference. The front bezel has a darker circle next to the Nook button, my unit does not have this.
Various "light sensor" threads with pictures confirm this.
In IRC chat it was mentioned that in one tear down, the area where the light sensor is supposed to be on the board was unpopulated. Not sure which version was used in that tear down though..

Hi guys, I recently got my NC replacement from BN. The original NC I bought was Brand New. It just had a line of dead pixels on the screen therefore I need a change. Turns out they sent me this Pre-Owned NC that I'm having now. The screen is fine this time but I can see obvious scratches on the case. The Serial Number of my original one starts with 2010XXXXX but the changed one is like 2005XXXXX. Does this mean it was produced back in 2005? I think this is very unfair for them to replace me my brand new (but defective) item with a pre-owned one.
Plus the replacement has the new partition issue that doesn't allow me to format data ("Error formatting /data"). This (I suspect) causes the rooted mod (cm-7.0.3 or nightly-83) throws an "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly" error every couple of seconds. This is SOOOO frustrating. Should I consider to ask for a redemption or another replacement but a brand new one? Thanks!!!
The serial numbers do not denote the year. NC is less than a year old. Don't be silly.
If there is an obvious problem with the replacement just request a new one.

I think its the new partitioning scheme that B&N did or something, i had a ***** of a time trying to get my replacement nook working (i figured i'd probably need to get a replacement, so i bought a refurb to begin with! looks brand new and works tons better than the original)
You need to do a method of re-partitioning ALL of the MMC to a state where CM7 can install properly AND use the free space available. If you can't find this info, let me know and i'll dig around for it. I had to work on that crap for days since its not that well documented other than two forum posts. That and my PC did not want to connect to my NC via ADB at all.
I think there is already a large thread about the new NC partitions.

Hi! a friend of mine is visiting USA next week. I'm considering buying a NC but would prefer to avoid the models with the new partition schema. Could someone please post a photo from the box that identifies this new model? afaik it has some sticker or draw on it.
Thanks in advance!
LU
At this point its probably most of them. I dont believe theres any thing special about the box, you could check serial numbers, and get the lowest one there..
it's a pity, I was hoping to be able to find the previous model in alternative stores, like best buy, wallmart, etc...
Last I heard, the new partition boxes have a blue dot? (A sticker I think...) And that wal-mart had older versions of the nook color for most people that were buying them.
walmart still has older ones as of last week, just look for the first 4 digits of the serial # to be 2010********* or earlier
I just picked one up last week from Walmart. All their stock was under the 201146xxx serial number, and the one I picked up was 201027xxx and had OS version 1.0.1 on it. You shouldn't have any problem still finding them without the new partitioning.
ok I'll ask my friend to look for a 2010xxx S/N.
Thanks for the answers.
Picked one up at the local Walmart this past weekend, got an SN20110701XXXXXXXX model. No blue sticker, old-style eMMC partition and ran stock 1.1
So I have had a Nexus 6 with a broken LCD sitting in a drawer for a while because screen prices (in addition to Motorola repair options) are much more than I would like, in addition to the phone running a custom ROM with an unlocked bootloader. So today I decided to look on ebay and screen prices are still pretty high, except this one.

Looks like this guy got his hands on one of those prototype LCD assemblies. I'm not sure who would part out and sell one of these but, here it is. I was wondering if this was worth a try or if I should just leave it dead in my drawer. The dude doesn't seem to know what he is selling but, mentions the ribbon cable is a bit short. If anyone can guide me on this, I would appreciate it.
EDIT: Meant to say Prototype rather than Developer, my apologies. If a mod wants to come through and fix the title, that would be great.
Thanks, TriguyRN

Assuming you can do the repair yourself, I would just shell out the extra bit of cash to get a legit LCD. But, if you want to take the risk to save a buck, nothing is holding you back. It did say something about flex cables being different, in which case you would have a bit of trouble. Cheers!
Is anyone exchanging their current Note8 for this color? Also, are you able to choose this color if you need to service your phone/have it replaced?
Your question is a little bit confuse
I wanted 256gb internal storage, Exynos, and blue so I went with the Korean version and got it a day or two before the US version was out.
No regrets, love deep sea blue
Ordered a deep sea blue unlocked note 8 from samsung om thursday. Probably giving my black one to the Wife. If you're referring to insurance replacements, they try to give you the color device you already have
I do not why it really matters. Most of use put on cases. I always pick black and go wild on color cases.

Because underneath that cover, WE STILL KNOW....
Doesn't matter in Oz, if you want your warranty you have to get the Australian variant and it's only available in Black and Gold...
