I've been doing some searching because I'm trying to root my brother's hero. I have an Evo and I've had success using both one click methods and ADB. With that said I am having the hardest time rooting my brother's hero. I've tried a few different methods, but none have worked. From what I understand z4 is the best way to root 2.32.651.2 but every time I use that it gets to "rebooting" and never does anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SIMPLE WORDS TO SOLVE A SIMPLE PROBLEM:
Requirements:
- USB Cord
- HTC HeroC
Instructional Flow Directions:
Since you want to use z4root do the following...
Download & Set Up HTC Sync > Latest RUU > z4root
OR
Update Phone through Settings > About Phone > z4root
when looking for a little help, I didn't mean....
Though I appreciate the reply/answer's brevity and simplicity it leaves a bit to be desired when it comes to direction. I am in somewhat of the same boat. My girlfriend screws her phone up every 6-7 months or so and they give her another Hero (still 6 months from upgrade) and I have to go through the same crap trying to root whatever the latest version is of this damn phone. My Evo, straightforward by comparison. I can't see how so many have stayed with this one for so long, but oh well, such is my task.... Can someone be a little more specific as to how to root the latest RUU?
Thanks in advance for a thoughtful reply
Try the one click root app in the themes and app section. That should work for you.

have a g1 1.6 build dmd64, and since i doubt there will be any more ota updates for this phone i have decided to root. i have never rooted a phone b4 but i am pretty tech savvy, i have flashed firmware on a psp b4.. i have heard that the dmd64 build cannot be rooted traditional ways, i have heard that there is a special way to root this build. Is this true? And if there is a special where would i find best guide on how to accomplish the root on dmd64? If anyone has rooted a dmd64 build b4 you are the perfect person to help me out, but any help would be great.

Hi i have a DMD64...i installed universal Androot.apk and it will work out for you...google it
Make sure you check if you are actually rooted after rooting with Universal Androot. I used it to initially try and root my G1 with DMD64 and it said it worked but I didn't have root access. I wish I could remember what I actually used to finally get it done.. let me look through my bookmarks and see what I can find for you.

I just did this with CM6. If you need help let me know.
NOOOOOOOB
I hate posting and asking for help. I enjoy figuring things out for myself. G1 with dmd64. Apparently I have rooted using the ANDRoot method. Shooting for install of Cyanogenmod 6, but not married to that if someone has other suggestions.
Problem? For a long list of reasons I won't get into, I am stuck using a Mac 10.4.
Just makes all instructions I am following a little bit different. I have dreamimg'ed...Put the mod on my root, all kinds of things, even starting from scratch with factory resets etc...
While I haven't "bricked" I have yet to get any MOD working yet. Have started of thinking of "different" ways of doing things so that they will take hold...Yet have realized I am getting awfully close to bricking..
Does ANYONE know of procedure to use/put on MOD using a MAC? I know I'm a NOOB, but I doubt I'm the first...

I used the instructions at this wiki. When it comes to flashing the recovery, I had to look into the discussion section and use what one of the users posted to actually get telnet to flash the recovery to my phone. I did however manage to successfully flash my G1 with CM6.
Thank you. Good stuff. I guess my question in particular is...My phone IS rooted (checked with T emulator) but before I flash mod, do I still have to change the radio? Right now I'm listed at dmd64, do I have to goto one of the RC's or can I just flash? I have tried to change the radio but it always stops at the rainbow screen.

Personally, I did exactly what that guide I linked said. I'm not sure if you can just flash or if you have to downgrade. I do know, though, that downgrading is pretty simple and it doesn't take much time. As for the radio, I know that CM5 and CM6 (and I am assuming CM7 also) require DangerSPL. When you flash DangerSPL, the instructions also tell you which radio to flash, and to be careful because flashing the incorrect radio can brick your phone.
So I have been lurking for a few weeks and I have a HTC Hero that I want to root. But my question is what is the difference between rooting with UnrEVOked and rooting the way that this thread says forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
IS the difference just the difficult of the root?
And is unrevoked really just one click I haven't found much good info about it.
Thank you so much!
The thread you posted uses the unrevoked method. essentially read a little and what ever you feel is the easiest to understand then do that one.
oh ok. It didnt seem like the thread was the unrevoked method becasue theres are so many steps and unrevoked says its one click. Thats why i was confused.

I've fully rooted my own HTC evo and now I'm looking to root my mom's hero. My question though, is there any downside or limitations to rooting with these methods? Mainly, is this a full root or will that require additional steps?

No limitations, its more steps than the one click method but if you follow the directions it never fails, you run no risk of messing your phone up ( atleast I can't see how) ... any ways the unrevoked method has all the steps to get you rooted and will also help your understand the process and what root actually is.
But root is root doesn't matter how you do it they all lead to the same thing ... full control over your phone.
Ok, so with just one if those two methods the phone will be fully rooted to flash roms, kernels, custom recoveries, radios, and make nand backups? Can you remount and write to /system from within android? I fully understand rooting, just wasn't sure if any further steps were needed on the Hero. With the Evo it was a little more work to obtain full root.

Flash a GB firmware and next, the CF-Root.
Seriously, do some reading before posting a common thread like this.
Yeah, seriously. If there were a common way to do it, I'm sure I would have found it by now. Instead, all I get are "super easy" ways which don't seem to work - some of which involve not even using a computer at all. So, with the three responses so far, two offer information and both seem completely different from one another - my point exactly. How would I flash a ROM without root to begin with? What's the deal with lagfix? Yeah, like rooting anything's that easy. Rooting has never been just a click or two away (as I don't expect it to be. I'm willing to put the time and effort into using ADB shell commands, etc.) Trust me, I searched a good 20 minutes or so before posting. I'll try and go off the leads you guys gave me. Thanks.

With Samsung phones, you don't need root to flash a rom. There's a closed source program from Samsung called Odin that allows you to flash a rom from your computer to your phone without root. There's also an open source software called Helmdall that does exactly the same thing.
Welcome to the world of Samsung Android phones. Enjoy your stay.
I have looked around the forums and google searched this for the last hour. I've been trying to root it with SuperOneClick and Pete's Motorola Root Tools and have had no success. The build number is FRK76. My brother updated it and i can't root it anymore. Any help will be accepted.
I am having the same issue. Any rooting options out there for 2.2.3? Someone out there please help out.
Thanks...
Same problem here. It got updated to FRK76, cant find any support to root it.
I found that using Superoneclick v1.7 works when you use the rageagainstthecage method. This was the latest version I found that included this method; it has been removed in later versions.
Root 2.2.3 (FRK76)
I had the same problem:
Current version of SuperOneClick could not root my Droid (2.2.3 FRK76)
Downloaded SuperOneClick 1.7,
ran it (selecting rageinthecage option)
and it succeeded in rooting my phone.
Thank you!
- michael
PS: I got v 1.7 here

I can't vouch for that zip file but yes version 1.7 will get flagged by your virus scanner. I posted in the other thread where I got my version of 1.7 from and the link has a description of why it gets flagged by your virus scanner: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1406287&page=2
Root Droid using 2.2.3 with Mac OS X
Can someone point me to step by step instructions on how to root my Droid 1 running 2.2.3 using my Mac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8? I've searched quite a bit so far and have not come across what I need. I have not rooted before, and I'd like some help. Everyone here seems to be the most helpful I've seen on most forums so I figured this would be the place to ask. All assistance is greatly appreciated.
I tried using mono and running SuperOneClick v 1.7 with the rageinthecage option and it failed, also failed using all other exploits in both the 2.3.3 version on SOC and the 1.7 version of SOC.
Each time I try I get "Automatic version checking failed, Is your OS 2.0 or higher?" with options of YES, NO, OR CANCEL. No matter what i choose, the process stops.
Is using mono the problem? I am willing to try anything manually or otherwise, I just need some guidance. Thanks in advance!
Nate
Never mind, I've got it taken care of
How did you get it taken care of?
I am officially a sap. I download all excited thinking "hey, maybe wireless will finally work on a wpa2 encrypted network." But of course we should not fix a serious usability issue. Instead lets take away root making it even harder to use the device.
Err.. I simply meant to say, "hey, thanks for the tip on getting superoneclick 1.7 to do the jpb!"
UniversalAndroot is what you looking for.
I was able to use the latest SuperOneClick w/ my Droid @ 2.2.3 and it worked the first time on Win7 64-bit. I don't remember my build number (it seems to have changed since installing CM7), but I got it in January of 2010.
so ive been at this all day reading and searching these forums with no luck.
i have a droid one, running 2.2.3 FRK76, bought the phone used. says it has kernel version 2.6.32.9-g68eeef5. no clue what this is.
have tried to root with superoneclick with rageagainstcage option clicked. also tried the one click some one had posted on this site in one of the forums. Sd card is unmounted. debugg mode is selected. and i cant get past first time it says waiting for device. what do i do? im usign windows xp
First, it's but joined up as mass storage it's it? Also run one chick as admin if you aren't

life is better with root.
links for rooting
I am having the same problem. I have been at this for 2 days now trying to root my droid 2.2.3. I tried
psouza4 method
it didnt work. I got the error message:
ERROR: adb could not be granted root access via local.prop method
Try again from the start, but if the problem continues, check your version
of Gingerbread -- hopefully you don't have a version where this exploit
was fixed.
then I tried to download super one click and I couldnt find the link....
I need help... anyone??
THANKS!
My friend asked me to root his samsung captivate for him. He doesn't have a sim card in it and it is running 2.2 froyo. I have tons on experience rooting and ROMing my Droid x2 from Verizon and my Acer tablet but I don't know where to begin on this phone. I read the stickys and I've been researching for the past week and all I have is the right drivers, lol. My friend needs it tommorow, and he already gave me some money to do it for him. If any one, any one at all could help me on how to root it (prefferebly not through adb) or if you can do it without hooking it up to the computer, I would be eternally greatful! I can definately use a computer if neccesary I just prefer not to do so. All I need to do is get the phone rooted and get a recovery on there. Somebody please help! Thanks guys!!!

if you have a captivate 2.2 then you will need a computer it is compulsory
download superoneclick and connect the phone after enabling debugging
if soc detect the phone click on root wait for soc to complete and you will get your mobile rooted
hey, I just rooted and custom rom'ed today from stock 2.2; and, let me tell you, the rooting was the simple part! Just download superoneclick and click the root button! After that you can install cwm5 via Rom manager from the market. If you get stuck with the Samsung recovery because it is version 3e, then post here and I'll tell you what I did to get past it....
