I have got a generic car charger I got off Ebay which seems to have a minor issue. When using GPS and charging in the car, the charge continues to drop...although slower than if it wasn't being charged. Basically means that eventually, despite being charged all the time, the battery will go flat when using GPS. I assume this is because the car charger is behaving as though its being charged via a USB port rather than mains.
Is this a problem with all car chargers...or just because I got the cheapest car charger I could get on eBay?
Would buying the official Samsung car charger provide a more efficient and quicker charging?
Im curious about this as well. I use a cheap charger and it seems to "maintain" the current charge, but doesnt actually charge.

Mine was dropping one percentage point every 15 minutes or so. If I was running low on battery before getting in the car, I probably wouldn't get very far using the GPS

i purchased a 2Amp charger and it works perfectly
average old (free) included car chargers are usually rated at 450 mAh or less
translation, you use the battery faster than it can charge it back
basically you need charger that guarantees 1 Amp (1000 mAh) or more for it to properly work in the car, meanwhile using the GPS and Bluetooth streaming
i picked up a cheap duracell brand car charger from the local frys store before embarking on my 4 hour journey from Houston to Dallas, i had music playing and gps with screen brightness at 100%
no issues for me
I use a Motorola charger, 950 mah. Works find for me. Got it for $5 on Amazon. It's not a USB adapter charger, but it gets the job done.

Hope you had that phone in front of your A/C otherwise the back cover probably would have melted.
the one i'm using was originally made for BlackBerries
There's a thread somewhere about modding your car USB charger charger cable by linking the data parts to make it think it's mains and allowing a full 1amp to come through.
Can anyone link to a reliable 1amp on Amazon or something?

Seem to do the trick so far, rated at 1A and on a brief test this morning on the way to work actually charged the phone with NAV and GPS running.
The Samsung I had bought previously did show as charging from 'AC' (so D+ and D- shorted) but was only rated at 750mA which clearly wasn't quite enough.
I had one from Belkin, bought for my old iPhone, it works really well with the Nexus S, even with the GPS always on.
Most of the ipad chargers are rated at 2 amp. Get one with a usb connection and use your own usb cable. Kensington makes one in a micro format that hides completely in the lighter outlet. Works great for me.

I used this on my Palm Pre. It charges my Epic 4g, and I tried it out on the Nook Color this AM.
It worked just fine.

There's qutie a number of cigarette lighter adapters available that offer a standard USB port. You'd supply your own cable. Here's an example:

No, AFAIK, none of these will charge as fast as the standard NC charger. For that, you'd need to go thru the hassle of getting an inverter.
Monoprice has cigarette lighter to female usb chargers for $1.16 that you can use your usb cable with.

Yes, the Sprint charger says 'charging' As the others stated, it's not fast, but it works just fine...
it isnt more of a hassle, I have 4 inverters, but they all have fans and make noise I wanted to use a NO noise charger thats all

Larger, heavier, more cords, much more expensive (when compared to a $1 cig-to-usb)...
Just has to be able to push out the current needed. Otherwise it may not charge, or it will charge very slowly.
The Scosche reVIVE II Dual USB Car Charger for iPad has 2.1 and 1.0 amp usb outlets, I use this for plugging in my evo and nc. It definitely charges them both even while having all the wireless radios going and tethering with gps and both screens full bright.

Same issue here, I have a road-trip coming up this summer and I'd love to load up my NC with music and dash-mount it but it'll be a 14-20 hour drive (depending on the number of whiz breaks the wife and kids need) and I don't think I could push the battery quite that long and the inverter when wired to the radio creates quite a buzzing.

Are you using the Nooks specific cable on the 2.1A connection? I too am going on a trip soon, and would love a car charger that can actually CHARGE the nook while using it..

It definitely charges both. Like I said in my previous post, I usually have both my Evo runniong and the Nook full bright display on for 50 minute commute, using TetherGPS, wifi hotspot, torque and bluetooth, google navigation pulling satellite imagery, and playing mp3s. Granted, it is slower to charge than without all that stuff running but my previous car charger would lose charge with my evo running just gps and no wifi hotspot previously.
I am using stock blackberry usb cables that I ordered from Amazon as well for $1.25 for a pair (google 'B001UC9NOQ', can't post links yet.) These are nice, thick cables that handle the charger great. I leave them plugged in inside the truck at all times. I have not used that Scosche wall charger, I use the stock chargers for travel that remain in my backpack, and I have other usb cables I use to charge at home. I would imagine it works just as well though.

Let us know if it works for you. An Amazon reviewer just reported that the Scosche reVIVE II didn't work on their Nook Color:
The nook color needs 1.9 amps, this can't do it. Scosche claims 2.1 amps but it isn't even close. It BARELY charges the nook if the machine is sleeping, when on, the battery charge goes down even while supposedly "charging." Playing video, it's even worse. On top of that if I try to charge a regular phone it puts out too much amperage on the 1 amp side and overheats the phone. Save your money, look elsewhere.

However, the reviewer may not know what they're talking about. A charger cannot put out "too much amperage." Too much voltage perhaps, but not too much amperage (current). A device draws only the current it needs.
An iPad needs an amperage around 2 A also. I got the Belkin Charge 2.1 made for the ipod/ipad and it DOES charge the nook color. It has a 12V plug with one USB outlet at 2.1A. I used the cable from the nook color obviously...
See, part of my worry is not the current output, but if the nook can actually communicate with these chargers and get a full 1.9A draw, instead of the detault 500mA over non B&N chargers...

I bought the same Belkin iPad charger from Best Buy. Rated at 2.1A. I used it with the B & N USB cable that came with my Nook Color. I used the 'Battery Monitor' software mentioned earlier here or on another post to compare charge current readings against the stock B&N wall charger/cable. The Belkin was charging right at 500 mA (NC was using ~450 mA, software showing +36 mA current). So somewhere the B & N cable & charger must have a unique way of determining that it is a B&N charger / cable and to allow the full 2.1A charge. I used the Belkin 12V charger on my TomTom and it allowed just over 1A charge, so I know the Belkin iPad charger is fine.
Yes, it does charge the Nook Color, if you are at 800 Mhz and minimum brightness running non-intensive applications--and it barely charges at that ~50 mA. It does turn the charge indicator on the B&N cable orange, and the status indicates battery charge on the screen.

The standard mains power adaptor that comes with the phone is 1000mA so no it won't damage it.
Even a 5000mA won't, the phone will draw as much current as it needs.

I use an original Nokia N97 car charger and I never had any problems. I suggest you do the same, they are a little more expensive than the other ones, but a car charger has to be able to give enough juice to the phone while running. A friend of mine uses a similar charger for his HD2, he even tried a charger with several normal USB ports and they can't supply enough power for the phone.
Thank you all for the replies. I have seen both chargers, and the Nokia N97 one is even cheaper on Amazon. I will probably go with the Motorola one, as it seems to have enough power for the HD2. I was able to find out that its maximum output is 950mah, which is not bad for a cell phone charger.
Looks also like a more durable one, and if the manufacturers won't change the port soon, might be able to get it to charge my future phones as well.
Now for a car mount, I will probably go with the Exomount, as I have read some very nice things about it, plus it is universal, so I'll be able to have it hold much more than this phone.
Hope this thread helps someone with the same questions as I had.
Micro usb is the agreed standard amongst most mobile phone manufacturers to reduce wastage in having to produce umpteen different power adaptors, plus it reduces manufacturing costs.

amen to that , I was tiered of having so many different charges at home. At least at that time Nokia ruled the world (mobile world I mean), and most of them were Nokia chargers, hehe
But I prefer the micro usb norm. I just hope they will not invent a mini micro usb in the new devices. My xperia x1 and touch pro use a mini usb, which was the standard at that time
What is the max that the HD2 can get from the car charger?

yes that will do the job,
if it does not, solder the 2 inner terminals together and that will make your phone think it plugged into the mains charger
i bought a cheap 1amp usb charger from deal extreme and did the above
Be careful with the soldering. If the charger can't supply 1A, it might damage the phone /car/charger.

I have a few of the belkin/off brand dual USB auto adapters. But they all have output of around 500mA so basically when using bluetooth and GPS on the rd I'm drawing more power than I'm getting. I've looked around on amazon for some usb adapters but seems like a lot of them for some reason only really fast charge with IPads or other apple devices and for some reason they slow charge android devices. Apparently iphones have some sort of communications with the chargers to draw more power.
So my question is does anyone have one or know of one that works with the G2 and fast charges. I'd prefer one that is flush like my existing belkin and not one that sticks out a few inches. Dual ports would be nice, but at this point I'm not picky. Having said that, I'd like to not spend $30 on it.
To add to it, I installed some battery monitor widget and while in the car today I just popped it open and noticed that it said "USB Connected Discharging" So basically It actually drains power quicker than if it wasn't connected to the charger at all!

It seems that the bigger issue is not finding a 2amp charger, but a USB cable with the correct gauge similar to the oem one. I believe the oem cable is 20 gauge and I believe I found one on Amazon.

I don't get why it's such a difficult thing to find? Doesn't LG make a car charger that charges it's own phone?
I use my older Motorola ones and they work fine. Not full 2 amp but I can stream iheartradio or Pandora and the phone will charge up still. But the screen is off, not like using GPS. Still would like a fast charger tho.
I have an Anker 24w 2 port charger and it charges my phone as fast as the wall charger. I tested it with a charger doctor and it does read 1.8a current flowing thru.

It's not the charger that seems to be the problem. 2a Chargers can be had in many places. It seems a 20 gauge wire is the difference.

No, the problem is the op isn't using a charger designed for Android.
I bought a twin USB car charger (2A) from Halfords and a 2M Belkin micro USB from Halfords.
I was using phone as sat nav for a while when one day I noticed a plasticky burning smell. I noticed the charger and my phone were very hot. I pulled the cable out of the phone and as I did, the metal of the cable twisted through the rubber of the cable. I found I couldn't charge the phone with any charger and the port had blackened.
I sent charger back to Halfords and they are carrying out investigations. I sent the phone to Carphone Warehouse for repair under Manufacturer Warranty and am awaiting for them to diagnose the problem.
Has any one had a similar experience?
I am worried both Halfords and Carphone Warehouse will blame each other leaving me with a dud phone. Any advice?

The assistant in store had a guess that possibly the wire was not rated for 2A? But I think he was reaching.
I do a lot of travelling in my line of work and only once have I seen something similar happen to me and oddly it was in my personal car not the work van I drive regularly!
But yes, it was the cable that went. Not sure why. I doubt it was a rating thing to be honest. Its more likely the insulation has failed in the cable somewhere causing a short and to heat up. That will travel the length of the cable so its no wonder it burnt out the socket on the phone especially with the HTC being constructed of metals.

The stock charger is rated at 1.5 amps. Isn't 2 amps too high?
EDIT: I looked it up and it is a twin charger. The question is: do they put the full amps out a single port, or divide it in half, for twin 1 amp charges. I've seen chargers that do one or the other - depends on the design.

It does not matter. It could be rated for 5 amps, a device should only pull as many amps as it needs. As long as the voltage is right and you meet the minimum amperage you're fine.
EDIT: Short version, improper voltage will kill electronics fast.

How long have you had the cable? I've seen it several times with cables that have shorts in one of the ends, generally showing signs of ware such as exposed wires, ripples in the outer shield etc... if they were both new then it's probably still the cable at fault, generally when chargers fail they just stop working.

This is rubbish and smacks of HTC just covering their arses. I sometimes use a 2amp charger with my M8 in the house and never had a problem. As previous poster said, the phone will draw what it needs.
Aside from that, the M8 supports quick charge 2. Whilst that requires a special charger to work, said charger kicks out nearly 2amps and a higher voltage (9-12v). So I don't think anyone has to worry.

This is the problem with HTC support, they don't seem to really know what they are talking about!
I don't understand how the phone will pull more current just because the charger is capable of supplying it. Its like saying, don't plug your phone charger into a wall socket capable of supplying 13A, because it only needs 3A!

Oh man! I better not use my kitchen outlets! Those guys are 20A rated outlets on a 20A breaker!
Update
So I returned my phone for repair, and after two weeks, they just sent me a replacement. I asked for details on the overheating problem and they fobbed me off saying now the 'repair' was complete they can't contact the repair centre.
I also returned the charger and wire to Halfords, and they exchanged on the spot.
I used the new phone and car charger again, and it seems to be heating up quite a bit again. I'm noticing the charger itself is warming up quite a bit and the phone is getting very hot.
I rang HTC customer services and they said they only offer support on genuine HTC products and told me to go to their shop.
Anyone else have any words of advice on what charger/wire is working well for them?
Yeah I thought about that but I'm getting the same issue in two different vehicles.
In struggling to understand why you exchanged the charger (which 99.9% probability is the problem) for another, so that it could potentially happen again!? If that was me, I'd have got a refund and bought a different charger.
For what its worth I'm using a Proporta 2a twin in car charger with no problems. I'm using this with a short cable 5-6" long as I hate having long cables trailing in the car.

Does this behavior only happen when you're using navigation and charging at the same time, or does it happen when you just charge? I've noticed with every HTC I've owned that when using GPS and charging, the phone will get pretty warm and the orange LED will start flashing indicating it's overheating.

This is exactly what happens on mine, using it as navigation, so obviously screen on, on hot dashboard, while voice and music are piped through bluetooth, it overheats my M8 and the LED starts blinking and stops charging, even with power saver on. But, if I shut the screen off for maybe 10 minutes it cools down enough to start charging again.
Yeah I'm noticing it heats up generally, but especially when using a car charger vs using mains charger.
When I had the issue, there was no warning or light. It just stopped charging and burnt the port and wire.
The reason I went for an exchange was because it's a reputable retailer. Not some eBay product.
Just a thought. But, and this CAN actually happen....
You're really NOT supposed to use a phone while it's charging. That can cause overheating in both the device AND the charger.
Interesting point, lyrical1278. I bought a charger for my car when I use Google Maps navigation. I'm a bit worried it will fry my phone though if I'm charging and navigating at the same time.

Yeah, I remember plenty of times I was using nav with the charger and the phone would be blistering hot (from previous phones I have used). So I stopped doing that.
I would simply leave it off charger unless I absolutely needed to charge the phone (around 20%). The downside to that is that there is no way around it. If you get a lower rated charger, you risk the device using more power than the charger can give it and doing more harm than good.
This is where the external batteries come in. I use those now since there isn't any more stress on the phone than what it would normally dram from it's own battery. AND the phone doesn't get hot.

Yeah, I remember plenty of times I was using nav with the charger and the phone would be blistering hot (from previous phones I have used). So I stopped doing that.
I would simply leave it off charger unless I absolutely needed to charge the phone (around 20%). The downside to that is that there is no way around it. If you get a lower rated charger, you risk the device using more power than the charger can give it and doing more harm than good.
This is where the external batteries come in. I use those now since there isn't any more stress on the phone than what it would normally dram from it's own battery. AND the phone doesn't get hot.

Yeah, feels like the charger I bought was a waste of money now lol. Probably better to just keep an external battery in the car.
I have a USB port in my car, which I used to use, but the battery would go down faster than it would charge at when using GPS/3G/Wifi/etc. I didn't realise that was bad for the phone until reading your post!
A quick fix for over heating in hot climiates would be a vent phone holder, and turn AC on. Its kind of a bobo approach, but it would work. Also I think having a case on is interfering with thermal transfer,..its insulating the phone and keeping some heat from being radiated away by the metal casing.
Just thought I'd share something simple that helps if ur charging ur phone in the car. I've noticed a lot of chargers charge at 1 amp. Seems like it took for ever to charge my phone in the car. I recently bought a 2.1 amp charger for $10 and the charging difference is huge. 6-7 % in 10 minutes with full brightness and gps on. Just thought I'd pass this info on. Sometimes it's the simple things we overlook..

There is a lot more to it than just that. Many actual 2 amp + battery chargers refuse to charge at the full 1.9 amp. Apparently the stock samsung charger gives off a certain resistance between the data terminals. Some cheap usb cables drop the resistance to where it will not charge at full 1.9 even with the correct adapter.
I ended up soldering some resistors in my car charger and replacing the 2 wire usb cable with a 4 wire usb cable that I had laying around. It now charges at the full 1.9 amps. It's rated for 2 amps.

thanks for pointing out the amps primo.. went and got 2 amp charger from biglots for 8$..much better.. was using a very old one and it was worthless.. also using factory cable instead of aftermarket made huge difference
I charge using external batteries...most of the time. I take it that using the correct cable would make a large difference as well
I use Monoprice PID 10239, works great
edit: scratch that, monoprice PID 10239 has a 3 amp fuse which blew when my gf tried to charge her iPhone at the same time as my GS4.
search TopG charger on Amazon for a more compact, fuseless 4.4A car charger. It's $9 and Prime eligible. Fuses in car chargers are pointless since the cigarette lighter receptacle is already fused to 10 or 15 amps in your car.
I bought a car charger from a Chinese eBay vendor and my phone charges from <5% to 50% in roughly 30 minutes.
I actually built my own charger that I hard wired into my car and I love it. I had a snap fish desk charger that crapped out on me, so I bought a lm2596 adjustable power supply for a couple bucks on eBay. Wired that up to the snap fish cable, adjusted the voltage and away I went. The module has a 3 amp capacity so it charges my phone or tablet quickly.

i'm using one of these but the charging keeps cutting in and out. i think i may have fudged up the wiring, i wired it to an add-a-fuse but i may need to just wire it directly.
I would keep the fuse in there. You never know when these cheap electronics will crap out and could potentially start a fire. I would make sure your connections are secure. To me it sounds like loose worrying or a bad unit. I used one of those in girlfriends car, works great-I put a switch in there to cut power if not being used.
I have 4 of these. I love them. I use them with oem Samsung cables and get full charging power on 2 devices.
