[Q] Internet in School - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have owned my Samsung Captivate for ~6 months. I constantly have problems with internet in School. I always have 0 or 1 bar in class and in bathrooms. This is a major problem for me, the consumer.
I am using the Serendipity 6.3 and the hardcore speedmod kernel. I am on AT&T. I live in North New Jersey.
Someone told me 1900 doesnt penatrate walls as well as 850 so I switched my modem to I9000UGJL2 (Froyo) found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391
This seems to have improved my internet connection speed, but I still seem to not have any internet and 0 to 1 bars in most class rooms and bathrooms.
When I get really close to the Window my bars go up and internet is there again and when I go outside I am also able to access sites again.
Because of this I am planning on switching to either Sprint of Verizon. I don't want to switch to the Evo 4g considering the Captivate Hardware surpasses the Evo 4g's. I have talked to a few friends and I am aware both Sprint and Verizon phones have internet in my school. My friend went on multiple websites in front of me on his droid on the Verizon network while I was not able to.
Any suggestions?
Please Help! Thanks.

But why do people have internet on Verizon and I don't? Verizon just dominates in NJ?

You could try putting your phone down while your at school and doing some work.

My grades are high. I own an online business so I constantly have to talk to staff online and when I have no internet this is impossible.
I am planning to switch to Verizon this week. I will buy myself the HTC ThunderBolt 4G and my mother the Samsung Convoy U640.

Verizon has better coverage... And are you using h or 3g?
Try using 3g if you were using h... But verizon would be much nicer

jp9 make my data slow and my phone get really hot, also kills my battery. some say the opposite.
data speeds vary by area. i get 4mbps on my captivate and 6mbps on my infuse. locally verizon is lucky to get 2g speeds even on 3g, it took 3 or 4 minutes to reinstall maps on my friends fascinate. in manhatten lte on verizon can get 20mbps. if verizon is better in your area and you can deal with there politics then get verizon. there plans are basically mirrored from att's plans now and you can go non contract with them as well if you want to pay full or near it for the phone. as verizon tries to atract att's costomers there rates, plans and obligations are getting better and better for new subscribers. old costomers they can't care less about and are subject to insane overage charges and dumb policies. they also offer unlimited data as there only data plan now so it is like the old iphone billing.

use kc1 modem it is the best overall i have used, no issues, great call quality. also kp1 was good, gps positiong is wonky on some roms but the call quality is good.
i hear jkv is also awesome but it is not included in the rom because it defaults to 900mhz not 850. i think after an 850 mhz mode is on there you can just flash jkv but im not speaking from experience that it works. you dont want the hot phone issue or a lack of service if you can avoid it so maybe try kc1 first.

Verizon Vs At&t

I currently have Tmobile and planning on making a switch to a different carrier tomorrow. Needs a carrier that offers me better reception and Verizon/At&t are the only two carriers that can do that for me. I looked @ pricing and their both very similar give or take $15 which isn't a big deal to me.
At&t
Pro: At&t uses sim card so you can use it internationally
Can: More dropped calls
Verizon
Pro: Best coverage IMO
Con: IDK if this is true but can you surf and talk at the same time with Verizon smartphones?
Any other info and personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If you're on wifi or (I believe) 4G, you can surf the web and talk at the same time on VZW. If you're just on 3G, you're SOL. But I've never really needed that functionality though.

Not true. Went into at&t the other day because my battery went bad. I don't even have warranty. Ten minutes later, I walked out with a new battery.
My vote is for at&t. Left Verizon for them and couldn't be happier. Better customer service and cheaper. And faster (3g) speeds. As for the service I cannot remember the last time I dropped a call. Verizon does have the best coverage though. And with they're lte network, they have the fastest 4g in America

Yes, that's one of the bonuses about AT&T, although I would rarely need that functionality.

Since price is not an issue, I would definitely go for Verizon since they have better reception and LTE. I currently have ATT and I do get dropped calls from time to time. Also, I only get 2.5 down max even on HSDPA.
A lot of it varies on your area for service, reliability, etc. The Thunderbolt is the only Verizon phone that can do talk/web at the same time (on 4G).
Otherwise it's the age old question, that everyone has an opinion on. Personally I prefer Verizon in my area, they have better coverage and less dropped calls than I experienced with AT&T, and much better customer support when I've called in, plus there's a Verizon store down the road from me, and the guys in there are awesome.
Your mileage, may vary...
I have had AT&T in one form or another since the 90s. Great service in my Area and great customer service. I also use the surf and talk feature all the time. If a customer needs some thing and I am not at my desk I just put them on voice and look up what I need and even order it while on the same call.
The Wife left Verizon years ago. Never had the coverage in our area I had at the time. Especialy on the coast line. That was many years ago and I am sure they are better now
Good luck with either choice!
At&t for me for sure

What US network are you on if you have unlocked note?

I saw a deal for an unlocked "world" version of the note and I am on TmoUS. So if I buy the note, will I be able to use my unlimited data plan with 3g or H? I am confused reading the forums on the att side and this one...they're saying I can only get edge? Because that would really suck.
I'm on tapatalk and can't do a decent search on xda via app so if this had been asked already, just point me to that thread and I will gladly have this one deleted. Also, the desire to get the unlocked note is a spur of the moment kinda thing since the deal is only available for one day. Btw, unlocked note is selling for 585 with shipping from 1saleaday.

what they said is right you will only get edge speeds on tmobile with the inter.. Note...If you use AT&T then its no big deal.
I am also on tmo. I found an article that says you can run tmo hspa+ on att note so I'm going to try and trade line on Craigslist. Edge is killing me man.

that depends on the frequency of the 3g network in your area.
however, this is the first I've seen it mentioned that American t mobile has any other 3g bands than 700mhz.
So I'd say no, you most likely will not get 3g speeds.
The N7000 will only run on T-Mobile edge. If you want 4g you have to AT&T or Straight Talk.
This is true. T-Mobile Sucks! EDGE just blows and I am amazed anyone uses it.
Oh well. I am going to try straight talk in a few weeks to see if that is any better.
Well, EDGE is downright terrible...no one can argue that. If you want to use T-Mobile, you're better off getting the AT-T note, unlocking it, then installing the right modem files to use it on 3g/4g. I use T-Mobile myself, and decided to keep the Int. version...I think it's better, and the development community is WAY better, mainly because the device has been out longer. It's up to you really. Don't hope T-Mobile will be updating it's 1900mhz spectrum in your area anytime soon...it's a process I'm sure will take many years.

Yes they do number porting as long as it is not a at&t number because straight talk uses at&t network.
It sucks that it is more difficult to get the inter version to work on 3g or h on tmo. I did read that the inter version is better than att version and I do believe that development will be better with the inter version as it obviously covers more countries and it has been out longer. I really want this note but I'm just gonna wait a bit. I have a feeling those guys working on getting tmo to work on inter version will be able to do it. Wishful thinking probably but it is possible with all the talented devs out there. I guess I'm going to be on sensation for a while until tmo comes up with a phone as awesome as the note. Thanks for all the responses!!

FYI and I have heard of this issue before, Straight Talk gets varied reception in Metropolitian areas. Let me explain.
I have had ST for a few months now, on the NT7000. I have had zero issues.
A couple of caveats
DO NOT use more than 100mb/day or 2gb/month, whichever comes first. People have had their contracts terminated by ST for doing this. So not truly unlimited (but still more than decent deal). This is not a *hard* limit- I have done more without any issues by accident.
I get decent service in the suburb of NYC where I live (few tall buildings), actually much better service than Tmobile had.
However, in NYC itself, the service can be absolutely horrible depending on area. My guess for this phenomenon is that while you are on an ATT MVNO, this doesn't necessarily mean that you have the same roaming rights as regular ATT customers. In a metro area, roaming might be necessary to get signal in certain places.
My download speeds at 2gb down 1 up.
I would just buy a months' worth at first and try it out as prepaid, then port your number in.
From what I understand, you don't even need to buy the e71 like I did anymore

I do. I got it with the SGS II and ow with the Note. up to 3mbs download. Good enough. MediaNet is $10 a month unlimited, I don't use nearly 2GB maybe less than 1 as I am in WiFi most of the time. I am using a Cingular.wap setting. Its different than the "smartphone" APN but the speeds are the same (until LTE is available) I don't need LTE speeds on a phone. I don't even get those speeds at home on cable. maybe 7Mbs DL.

Sprint Instability

Had an entire section of town go down yesterday. Showed full signal but everytime anyone attempted to make a call it showed "network failure". Even attempting to call sprint's customer service numbers.
Finally got ahold of sprint via a land line and they claimed the towers show no problems and the network wasn't congested...
It is really bad since I rely on my phone for emergency response. Anyone else notice instability like this lately?
Are you in an area where LTE is being deployed? Sometimes that happens. You dont get LTE and the 3G gets worse.

Well we were on the "list" (Tallahassee, FL) but haven't seen much LTE (or any) in Tallahassee... It wasn't just 3g, the entire 1xRTT network dropped (no phone calls, no texts). I am on business so I get to use business tech (instead of consumer tech) and they viewed all the work orders for the towers in teh area. Said there was nothing currently happening that would have caused the entire network to go down and that we aren't even close to 800 SMR deployment (which pisses me off because Sprint coverage inside my office is horrible, while verizon I can get a strong 1x, 3g and LTE (my work phone and air card are all verizon)).
Same thing happened to me a while back, nothing worked, but I was roaming. It lasted for a few days, then when it started working again, I got LTE.
Same thing going on around Philly suburbs. Calls dropping like crazy and horribly slow 3g. When lte is turned on for good, does 3g go back to normal, or stay slower than the 1x speeds I get in some places?

How so when Sprint's internal diagnostic tools show the tower is functioning properly (in respect to the Sprint network)?
Its possible that your area is getting 1900 network vision upgrades, which knock you out for about a week.you don't really notice the lte install because you don't have the service, but you are dependent on 1900 for voice so its not pretty. Our area just got the upgrade and we had a lot of unhappy customers, I couldnt call or text for about 6 days. I'm off for a few weeks or I would check it out for you.

So if I am scheduled to get LTE in my area soon, what kind of behavior would the network show?
I get crappy 3G almost everywhere, where every time I try to do anything, the 3G indicator goes dark and I get a network error. Whenever I get an LTE signal, it's usually a namesake, and I get knocked down to 3G. In select spots at select times, I get super duper slow 3G: around 90kbps. Sometimes 200. VERY few times, I get around 2 megs on LTE. That only lasts a little while.
I'm scheduled to get LTE this month. When should I expect decent coverage? All the threads in the International forum about gigs of data have me PUMPED!

Towers go down. Power goes out, internet goes down.
These things happen. You call Sprint, you let them know. Even if they tell you everything looks good on their end, if they get 5 calls about the same tower, they'll send out an engineer.
Expecting 100% uptime is absurd.

Normally you will just start to see 4g more often. You may some some minor odd behavior because they are up on the tower fooling around but it won't be a big outage. They do one site at a time, and once it's on it has to be tuned for optimal performance which takes a while too.
Sadly your 3g speeds are normal anymore, smart phones now days have completely overwhelmed the marginal capacity that evodo offers. Only thing they can do is to throw more RF carriers up but that can cause interface issues between cell sites and it can actually hinder performance. Areas that have complete lte toll outs do end up with much better 3g since the data hogs are now on lte, I can get about 1.5 down on 3g here where we have both lte and 1900mghz 3g network vision complete.
Same issues in Washington, DC for the Past 3 days. I sure hope its because they are upgrading the towers
Same thing happened in Houston a couple of days ago. One of the three towers in the area I work has been Network Vision upgraded, other two still in the works. Anywho, all of a sudden, no calls/texts for a span of about 20-30 minutes (longer/more in other areas). Sprint: "no issues reported in your area", I was: "yeah, I'm reporting one/some". Everything back to normal, for the time being, super-slow 3G (less than 100kbps). Thank goodness for Xfinity at home/work. I work for a preferred retailer and all we have been advised is that the upgrades are coming and will resolve and greatly improve our (Sprint's) network. Hopefully, the influx of money from the new owners will make it so. Nextel bandwidth/spectrum to be used for LTE, yes you'll need a new phone with correct radio.

I havent read much of what's going on here just skimmed through but I would like to add what I've heard.
Lately we've been having a lot of iPhones come in with data issues. Not just the 5 but 4 and 4s as well. This week alone I've seen 6 myself. Before that... Maybe 1 or 2 everyone 6 months. It's rare. And today these people plus more have come back with a worse issue. They aren't getting reception anywhere. (I'm in Washington btw). So I called my nss support team and they said as of the 17th of July sprint has been getting way more aggressive with the network vision and the iPhone's are more sensitive to this update but other device will start experience these problems and it's going to get worse all over the state till about October. The eta is October.
Sprint wants to have this network vision finished by this year so it just makes sense it would be happening in other states also.

Yeah I hear you. I got sold on it today at work. One of my guys has been with T-Mobile for years I did a speed test and you see the results. He did it with his Samsung note 3 and got 29 mbps download and close to the same on upload. Frigging amazing. It's faster then my Wi-Fi on comcast at home. Time to make a move. Sad thing is I've been with sprint since 2000. Gonna be weird.

I have been with Sprint over 10 years now. I don't know how much more I can take either. The network is so unstable in my area. Constant dropped calls, 3G is to the point where even at full signal I have to do toggle airplane mode for it to kinda work sometimes. 4G signal strength is a joke. Tri band is coming very soon but I'm just so so so tired of waiting.
You think your speeds are bad?

Here are results from my newly upgraded Network Vision Tower not even a mile away from me just down the road.
Sprint 3G with "great signal".
Verizon 3G will usually run faster than 4G Sprint LTE. Even though I'm very close to the tower, it constantly cuts in and out. The speed sucks.
Thank god for Comcast. I know a lot of people hate them but I am very happy with my connection except for netflix congestion which should be fixed soon. I usually am above my rated speed even at peek times.
My tower is absolutely pathetic. They aren't all done but my tower has been borked since July of 2013. Now 3G pretty much doesn't work at all.
The only thing that is nice is I now have an HD Voice tower which does sound awesome when it works when talking to someone else with Sprint on an upgraded tower. That's if it can actually hold a call.
Dan Hesse is still promising a Super 4G network to rival the competition when he did a recent interview on Mad Money seen here.
The build out is taking way too long. I know a new network is not built overnight but it's absolutely awful. It's so bad my local news did a story on it cause so many viewers were calling in wanting them to do a story.
I'm still holding out for Tri-Band is the only hope left, but I just don't know how much more I can take.
At least your guys 3G "works" if you want to call those speeds "working"
I have the same results in maplewod, voice in my house is terrible always getting dropped. I manage to get pretty good 4g in bloomington, but I am not in bloomington that often. perhaps if sprint actually buys t-mobile that will help things along.

A lot of the towers around here are just borked. What I have been reading it's the hand off between new equipment to older legacy equipment. So eventually it should all be replaced but yea pretty much anywhere in the metro it sucks big time. Most of our towers should be getting 800 MHz & 2.5 GHz LTE in the coming months. I will be upgrading to the next HTC in tri-band flavor. We *should* see awesome speeds on the 2.5 GHz band since we were in a wimax market. We will see how the handoffs go between the 3 frequencies. I'm expecting dumped signals & dropped connection but it's suppose to be seamless.
The fastest I got out of Sprint
Here's what I'm looking at
And that's after most of the university students went home for spring break. Usually at 4 AM the speeds skyrocket though I've hit the max that our 3G supports (I probably have insomnia)

I don't have any problems for the most part in the north east. Almost always 4g (LTE) and only occasionally does it drop to 3g while driving on highways.
I can stream netflix while driving and it only occasionally has to buffer.
