[Q] Nooby question - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone' It maybe a stupid question, but i could not find a definite answer. I'm getting my Captivate exchanged due to shutdown problems. Most likely the new one will come with 2.2. If i install custom rom and later want to change it to a different one, can i use Odin to go to 2.1 or i need to go to 2.2? Sorry again if the question is stupid but being a noob i want to make sure not to brick the phone.
Thanks

There are manyy threads that answer this question. Short answer is that going back to stock or flashing a ROM from 2.2 is not as easy as it was on 2.1. There are problems with the new 3e recovery and finding the right Odin to flash with. Do some searches, read some stickies and do your homework. The answers are already in here.

So basically i can't just flush a custom rom over 2.2 and than use Odin to flush to 2.1?

No you can't 3e recovery wont let you flash a rom. Usin Odin flash a kernel that has clockwork mod. Hardcore Speed Mod is good choice, after that you just need to place the rom on your SD card and will be able to flash.

it is still easy. before flashing fix 3e recovery.
dont flash with odin one click to stock (2.1) if going back to stock flash 2.2 with non one click...

Got It. Thanks Everyone for your responces. I'm thinking of keeping my phone and sending the replacement back. I can put up with ocasional shutdown so i can play with custom roms with ease of 2.1. What are the chances of replacement be 2.1?

I actually took my captivate to a warranty store 4 weeks ago, got a new phone and it was on 2.1. Not sure when they send you one through the mail.

Just because new phone has 2.2 doesn't mean you CAN'T flash new roms. It just means you may have 1 or 2 extra steps than before. Just flash it back to 2.1 with odin(not one click), install cwm, and flash away. If a warranty issue comes up, flash back to 2.1, then upgrade to 2.2 through kies.

[Q] 1 Click Odin Stock ROM 2.1 AT&T?

I am newbie to Android. So, please bear with my questions below. I used to own an iphone before, and when you reloaded the OS that you get from Apple you know it is the original. With Android it is little different.
I rooted my captivate and now I need to return it to AT&T. Need to load the original ROM.
I did download Odin 1 Click for android 2.1 AT&T Stock ROM? How do I know that it is the actual ROM AT&T/Samsung had put on the Captivate?
There are so many ROMS everybody is putting it out there...just wanted to be sure. I know AT&T or Samsung just don't give out the ROM.
If I have posted this in the wrong forum, please let me know.
Thanks
There is a question and answer section for these posts and it is the stock rom, that's what the thread says. Just read how to use and watch the videos if you're having trouble.
If it says stock it *should* be stock. And since it's Odin one click to stock you should be safe.
Sent from my Captivate
Look up your build number. If 1010 our higher jf6 iud not such and I would avoid odin one click
Is under battery
It is 1008.
But how do you get the Android 2.1 Stock ROM ?? AT&T or Samsung don't give it out. Am I missing something here.
As I said earlier for iphone you could the get ios file from Apple.
Odin injects the stock rom back into your phone
you need to be in down load mode
Open odin
Pull bat, sim, and ext sd
Put bat back in
Hold volume up and down
While holding plug usb
Should have android with shovel on screen.
A box in odin should turn yellow
Click start, watch the magic
Correct odin. Stock for the captivate is jf6

But how do you get the Android 2.1 Stock ROM ?? AT&T or Samsung don't give it out.
I am asking once again the same question as nobody is really answering to the question.Sorry about that.
Android is open source. All official software releases are out there.
What are you looking to do, you are not being clear
All I wanted to make sure is that I get the CORRECT ROM to put it back on my Captivate before I return it to AT&T.
Thanks
hmm so when you are told that the odin one click program flashes jf6 stock software (includes all at&t bloat ware) you continue to ask the same question. Good luck
I believe the stock 2.1 rom is embedded inside Odin so when you flash it returns to stock. There is no need to search for the stock 2.1 rom.
please correct me if Im wrong...I'm learning too..
Read the odin thread. Please if you have questions, post in q&a.

This is correct. I HIGHLY advise you to search for Connexions "how to" videos. It shows you how to use odin to return to stock. So easy, a caveman could do it.
Look here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
However, I have to ask the OP this: you mentioned that you rooted your phone, but did you flash to a different ROM? If you didn't flash to a different ROM, all you have to do is to unroot your phone and you're set to go.
LOL I think what the OP is trying to ask is this:
How do we know that Odin is using the correct, stock ROM directly from Samsung/ATT, so that when he flashes the phone with Odin and sends it back to AT&T, they don't tell him hes got the wrong software on it and void the warranty.

I'm so happy that you found it necessary to flame the thread for an answer.
Relax man.
It's natural to be concerned about voiding the warranty. Nobody wants to shell out $$ for a new phone, right? The bottom line is this, numerous people on this forum have done far worse than rooting their phone and have returned it successfully for a replacement (like bricking it). So take a deep breath, and follow some of the good advice given already to either:
A) unroot your phone (look around you'll find how)
B) flash the stock ROM that's out there in numerous locations
then send the sucker back.
But a bit of logic will show that the 3 minutes gave you the WRONG answer.
IF the Odin program had the stock rom we would not have had issues like loss of 3 button recovery on some phones after using Odin. We also would not have 2 versions of Odin. (1 specifically to address the 3 button recovery issue). You also would still be able to perform an OTA update after using Odin, which once again, most if not all the Odin flashed phones are incapable of.
Odin MIGHT have A stock Rom, in which case Samsung/ATT are using more than one, but it does not have THE stock ROM.
Now if the concern is just to get it close enough to return the phone, the guys at the exchange desk don't know enough about the phone to tell the difference.

[Q] JH7 Odin?

Ok, so I have Froyo on my Captivate from a looong time ago, but now I want to put in Andromeda 2.0. I followed the directions but then it says i have to get back to stock firmware. I got my Captivate on October 25, so it had the JH7, so now I need to get back to that firmware. Anything before that would brick my phone, so I'm trying to find an Odin restore that will get me back to JH7. And yes, I have googled it up a lot. Could you tell me or post a link, where I might find it?

1) Wrong section
2) You really do not need to go back to stock, that is just a disclaimer used. If you understand you have the possibility of bricking your phone than just flash the ROM. I will help you search but if you search the Dev forum rather than google you will find the thread for JH7 Odin. The only time you really need to go back to stock is with a bad flash, which sometimes can be fixed by flashing the ROM a second time.
Ok thanks, sorry for the wrong thread I'm just about to do the Andromeda 2.0 now.
Also, so it doesn't matter that I have the leaked 2.2 firmware, I can still download it with that rather than the 2.1?
yes you can flashhhhhhhhhhhhh if you don't make your phone into a paperweight
I got a replacement 1010 with jh7 installed and had no issues using the odin ji6 one click restore on it.

No technically you do not need to go back to stock but it is always a good idea. No matter what phone model or what stock it came with going back to jh6 is the best bet. It is the tried and true method and better then jh7.so just use the normal common odin

You could just flash over but the thing you would have to get past is 3e recovery there is a fix for that. I think there was a time when all new roms in xda were based on official 2.2 software back in october and november of last year and it had 3e, and the easiest way to get past it was to flash stock first. also there are two versions of odin you should try to get familiar with and a recently updated wiki sorta thread should be useful for up to date info. Hope this helps.

[Q] Questions about 2.2 stock

I recently just flashed a new rom and I had realized I never tried the stock 2.2 from samsung and I was wondering what people thought of it and if they were still able to flash other roms or use odin to go back to stock 2.1 and then flash other roms again. Or does updating to 2.2 mess up some of that?
And is it even worth it to try and check it out?
I am running serendipity and my wife has stock. I would not go back to stock if att were to pay me. Her Gps was messed up, bad battery life and other strange issues.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
the only thing 2.2 may mess up for flashing roms is it installs 3e recovery which needs signed update.zip packages (can be patched ) , and sometimes you need a new root program.
besides that its... stock. with the 2.2 updates...
Has anyone tried reflashing odin or using clockwork/rooting in 2.2?
I'm thinking i'm going to stay away from it at this point but curiosity my get the best of me....

i sucessfully rooted it using superone click method...but had problem flashing clockwork mode as there is sign verification problem...so i tried to flash back to 2.1 and used AIO method...which bricked my phone...so better to keep flashing good custom roms and be unbricked ....stay away from stock froyo...its exactly 2.1 with stock froyo capabilities...

May I know why you wanna go back to stock?
You don't need it to flash another GB rom. (just incase you didn't know)
As for going back to stuck, there is ONLY ONE way: Odin3 one click downloader.
i have a feeling this question is going to be asked A LOT!
a search would have lead you to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057343 a new one wasn't really needed
We warn them that GB is not yet ready for prime time, they flash it anyway. They muck up their phone or decide they can't live without a working camera or some other feature, and decide to flash back. Then they want help to get back to stock, but they don't even bother searching for the info that is already in here on how to do it. I say we let them stew in their own laziness.

Refurbished Captivate from warranty

I just had to warranty my original Cappy because of a power button issue. It came stock with 2.1 Eclair and I never had any issues rooting/flashing/ or otherwise messing with it.
The "new" one I have has 2.2 Stock on it, is there anything different about what I need to do? Will ODIN 1-click bring it back to 2.1 without much hassle?
I looked for over an hour and couldn't find any specific answer.
Thanks for the time,

This is the Development Section, you should've posted this on the Q&A Section instead.
I just had to replace mine last week, just do as you did on eclair rooting was same as was installing an updated ROM
with only 21 posts I think we can forgive a post in the wrong section
When I upgraded (way back when) to the official Froyo 2.2 through Kies, just to check it out, I could only get it rooted through this...View attachment SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse.zip
Or you could just flash a rooted Dev Kernel through Odin.

I cant verify this but i did have trouble as well re-rooting it after i did the kies update so i just flashed JF6 with odin one click and then re rooted it and its been fine every since. Im not sure what att did but this KB1 through kies sure made it hard to re root when i did the update and i wasnt impressed by it either(go figure). I hope that helps. I do know that odin one click to JF6 will just about fix everything or if your having trouble rooting with the 2.2 KB1

Yes everyone it does belong in QA and I am sure it will get moved.
To answer your question about 2.1, becareful and have a read through this thread in relation to my experiences with an 1104 build:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105776&highlight=1104 downgrading with JF6 was bad juju
---My opinion follows as this is what worked for me -----
I would just flash to 2.3.3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249
Or just the stock AT&T boot loaders from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129821
Then go about loading your desired kernel/rom combinations
