Hi all. I'm hoping someone can advise me on what to do.
I was rocking MIUI beta 8, and saw RC2 came out. On the i9000 page, it had a version for cappy. Something I didn't pay attention to is that it said I was supposed to be on 2.2 (whereas I was on 2.3 with miui already).
So i flashed that, did my usual steps, and booted. And I hang at the cyanogen boot screen.
I can get into CWM, but i can't get into download mode (i usually use the vol buttons + plugged in, insert battery method).
Since i can't get into download, I can't use Odin. Adb doesn't recognize a device connected.
I have on my phone a few versions of MIUI, the efs-backup, captivate-initial-kernel, and the kang kernel for the captivate. Is there anything I can do?
If i purchase a jig, will it work regardless of this?
Is there anything else I can do? I have an external sd card, so I think i could put a file on that and access it via cwm.
Thanks!
Did clockwork make any backups? If so restore one.
If you have the version of MIUI you were running before on the SD card, you can flash back to it.
I don't have any backups (cause I'm silly).
I have the previous versions, and I've tried to flash them with no success.
I flash the beta 8 (which i what I was using previously), then install the kang kernel, and wipe data cache and system. No go.
If you can read your external sd, it could save you.
also, a jig forces the phone to go in DL mode so I do presume it would work (btw you can make one yourself with 3 resistors and some tape.. it's cheap and you don't have to wait days to receive it).
As mentioned, CWM recovery could save you alot of trouble, if you made a backup that is.
I dont want to cut my own cord though. I would rather grab one off ebay for $8 if i need it.
is there something I could flash via CWM?

As for the JIG, 3 100k resistors can just be put together (no need to cut anything.. all you need is patience and tape lol).
And for flashing, I'm not sure it's such a good idea since u're on CM7 (correct me if I'm wrong) - It's really different than other ROMs and most likely not compatible with most rdm flash as it is 2.3 based.
I'd honestly suggest Odin 1 click once you get your JIG, that way you can be sure not too mess up royaly trying too many things. Patience might be your best friend here
You don't need to cut the cord. Check that one in my sig lol.
Can't you use CWM to reboot into DL mode? I thought that there was something like that in there.

CWM doesn't have that option, can only reboot into recovery.

I had loaded the ginger clone rom and all was well. I then however wanted to swap kernels so i loaded up seitrons cwm 1.5.6 and proceeded to flash through cwm. this has now become the worst day of my life. the phone will not boot past the galaxy s screen. i cannot not get into recovery and both computers now say usb device not recognized when in download trying to flash odin. i am worried that something is corrupted on my phone because not matter how many times i uninstall and reinstall the drivers no luck. i think it is officially bricked and im sol. maybe some great minds can figure it out here.
It's not bricked - issue is trying to get your computer to recognize your phone when in download mode so you can flash it back.
What OS are you running? Also - where did you download the drivers from? Some seem to work better than others.
If you can get to the galaxy screen you might still be able to to get into recovery. pull out the battery and use the 3 button combo. Hold down both volume button then power and let go of the power button after it turns on. then just reinstall the rom
I'm willing to bet you can also get into Download Mode either with button combos, or a JIG. Once in Download, you can use Odin to restore to JF6, and have a working phone to flash around with again.
i can get into download mode no problem. and i think it is quite possible drivers are corrupted on the phone itself. my wifes phone works on the same exact setup. no usb device not recognized error. i have tried the drivers from here and samsung directly with no luck. 3 button combo does not work. sim out sim in battery out and in. but like i said it will just not register with the comp and hers will. so im going to att and seeing about replacing it. but i will see how that goes. ive done this lots of times with no issues ever.
download works
3 button combo does not so no recovery
usb device not recognized error
thanks for the help and keep it coming i will try everything if i haven't already.
Try current usb port

Think I'm in worse shape. Tried flashing just the kernel to get BLN working again (last ROM I put on somehow loaded a non-compatible kernel). Now the phone boots the white ATT screen and just sits there. Can't get it into D/L mode with 3-button and doesn't respond to computer I have been using to flash ROMs for a couple weeks now...
Am I hosed? ANY help would be greatly appreciated...
You could try to use a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode
Okay...well, got into D/L mode finally. Used Odin to get it back to factory. Used the One Click rooter again, except now it boots to recovery 3e, which doesn't let my power button work as the okay button Pulling the battery to reset it, but it will no longer go into D/L mode to use Odin again. It keeps booting to the recovery Utils, which I cant get out of...*sigh*
Thoughts?
at least your able to do something i still cannot get my phone into recovery or to be recognized by the computer. it is not the drivers so i have no idea. i can only think that something got funked up with the kernel flash.
if you are getting into 3e recovery then you are most certainly NOT using the JF6 one click stock
3e recovery comes on JI6 which is the FroYo leak....completely different builds and roms
have you tried a different usb cable? I was having this problem, and the stock samsung cable was B.O. and wasnt working... i tried my blackberry one and all was good

I just want to quote this to stress the importance.
Thank you, didn't realize that (still sorta new to this)...
I downloaded a zip (I thought from here somewhere) that extracted into the 4 files. Anyone got a link to the JH6 set of files?
I also downloaded DG's "One Click Odin", but it doesn't seem to really do anything when I run it unless I manually load all the files. Also, I don't see a "Master Clean" like the post refer too
are you sure you downloaded the right odin? in the one click version, theres no option to load files at all. only a "start" and "master clear"
make sure the odin one click is open before you connect your phone.

I was having the same problem. Have you tried powering off, start odin, hold both the volume up/down, then plug in the usb to your phone?
Hello everyone. Tonight, nothing works on my AT&T Captivate (used on Fido here).
First, I am trying to flash Darky Official Port 7. I have copied the ZIP on my SD card and successfully boot into Recovery (CWM), but when I choose to browse for the ROM zip, I don't see it, even if I know it is there! What is happening there? I have tried everything and I can't. Find. That. *&%?% ZIP file. In the past, I have rooted and flashed many ROMs (long time lurker...), but this time.....
In desperation, I have tried to use ODIN to revert to stock; and I can't get into download mode. No matter what I do, I always finish into Recovery instead of Download Mode.
Any ideas anyone? I just want to revert to stock and then to Darky.
PS: Oh by the way, I am on a 2.2 moded AT&T ROM, but I don't know which one, since in "About Phone", the info is erroneous (kept the info from a Cognition ROM I was trying, the 1.7 Unhelpful Kernel one).

Yep .... Could it be something to do with my kernel? I read something about "2" kernels and "3" kernels? It's easy to get confused with the many many threads here, often it is hard trying to see if the solution explained is the one pertaining to your own problem or not...

Didn't see this post before my comments, hope this works good luck
I bricked my hero trying to flash gingerbread. Either because i didn't flash a kernel or i might have overlooked something i should've read. But my phone bricked. Long story but i ended up having to put my sdcard in a friends phone and formatting it, then downloaded something i found on G1 forum and dropped it on my sdcard (not smart i know). Then i took my sdcard out of his phone with that file on it and put it back in mine. Whatever that file was allowed me to now be able to boot into my recovery again/HBOOT&Fastboot. But i CANNOT boot past recovery. I didn't have a nandroid backup anymore since i formatted so i grabbed a 2.1 ROM off of here, something stable, and figured i could drop it on the sdcard and flash it. but nothing. Either it's not completely flashing the ROM, or sometimes it aborts it. So i tried a cm6 ROM. Same thing. It won't flash ANYTHING. Could my recovery have gotten damaged when i formatted my sdcard? i'm using clockworkmods 2.5. I'm on a mac that i recently had to factory reset. i downloaded sdk last night to try to manually install a different recovery. but i can't use htc sync since it's for pc. so i found a another program that will replace htc sync, but i still can't sync because i have to enable usb debugging for it to sync to my phone. and i don't know how to enable usb debugging from recovery. It has blown my mind. i have no idea what to try anynore. If anyone can help out at ALL. please do.
Try going into recovery and going into the partitions menu.
Inside that menu, format the system before you flash another ROM.
Factory reset skips over the /system file.
Try that and let me know what happens.
(I'm assuming you dont have data or anything since you factory resetted)
I guess. Disclaimer: this deletes data
hmm.
Okay so i booted into recovery.
Did a full wipe even though there isn't anything to wipe.
Then formatted the system.
Then installed zip.
Then Reboot system now.
I gave it 15 minutes just to be sure, and it never left the boot logo.
Again like i said it isn't completely flashing the ROM.
It unzips it and gets to where it says "installing package"
and just stops.
From the time i select the zip file that i want to flash, till the time that it says it's done, takes maybe 5 seconds.
That's why i thinking it's my recovery. It might be damaged or something.
If there was a way to enable usb debugging from clockworks recovery then i could manually install a different recovery. butt... i'm getting no where.
Get to a PC 1st and foremost. Go to the HTC website and download the RUU stock. Nevermind about adk and USB yet. You need to be back to stock to have a clean backup again. Once you have downloaded the stock rom be patient and charge the phone beforehand. Hopefully this gets you to stock again. Google Z4root, download and place in the root of the SD. In the market get an apk installer an install Z4. After run Z4 for root. Download and install clockwork after that and make sure you flash the recovery at the top before backing up. Then after that try installing 2.3 but let me know which rom you are trying to use. The one I have needed an different version of clockwork so read carefully. Hope this helps.
mmm a Gingerbread SuperHero....
Also redownload the rom. Could be a bad download.
mmm a Gingerbread SuperHero....
okay i'm going to try that. it's been so long since i've downloaded an RUU or Rooted. Can i flash the RUU like any other? will it be a zip file? Because back when i rooted and had to download the RUU before i could root, i think i installed it using htc sync. But my phone can only be recognized as a storage device. Since i cant enable debugging. I'll see what happens cause the only way i can think to get the stock ROM on there is to flash it. But seeings as how nothing else in the world is completely flashing i might stumble.
It's definitely not the ROMs i've tried like 5 or 6. Three of them being one's i've recently had on there. Oh and I didn't think there was but one Gingerbread ROM out for the hero. And was it the 3.0 clockworkmod? Cause that's what i skipped over thinking it was just extra, Since i had just updated my clockworkmod in ROM manager to 2.5

What worked for me was 1 of the 2?
Because I did Both Steps, I'm not really sure what actually fixed it, but all I cared about was it being fixed! With that said, try this!!
1st thing I did was Reflash the Radio, 2.42.02.10.29.zip
2nd thing I did was Wipe Everything, then Flash a New Kernel "I Used Deca's #43" If that Doesn't Work Try DecaFuct #589!
Hope this Helps!

Okay i'll try that! Because i can't even go back to stock since i can't sync with any computer. Because i can't enable usb debugging. Unless there is a way to flash a stock RUU.. i even tried different things in fastboot but it didn't work apparently because of usb debugging. (that's what someone else said). But I will try that and I'll let you know how it goes!
That didn't work either.
Are you using Windows XP to get all this done? I would try finding a PC that has Vista. Or try another PC all together. IDK, just a thought, give it shot, you don't have anything to lose. I wish you luck my friend.
You definitely need the 3.whatever clockwork flash that goes with the gingerbread that's posted here. Clockwork turns orange once its done right. Also don't use setcpu. Adw fc's a lot with it. But that's for later info. For now..
If your able to get into recovery you can save yourself. Rooting again is very one click simple with Z4 in my first post. You need a stock rom to save yourself now though. GET TO A WINDOWS COMPUTER at least with Vista but works great with 7.

LOL I still tell my 18 yo boy that everyday.

Best bet is to get to a Windows computer, preferably Windows 7. Plug it by USB and you need to get the drivers working for Sync to work at all and get USB debugging back on your phone. Leave the phone off before plugging it in. Plug it in and if the amber light comes on, if so turn on the phone and windows should give a USB notification and try to install drivers. This needs to happen if you want to get back to stock. And you do want back to stock to backup to in case you ever need to take it back to Sprint. They will flag your phone/account so you can't take it anywhere if you show them it's been rooted or custom rom anything. Z4 will also let you unroot the phone to do this.
If all else, I'd try flashing a different rom all together REMEMBER TO WIPE 1ST! then flash the rom. Maybe this will get it to fully install and enable usb, which the 1st thing I'd do when you get going again is get back to stock, root, and backup right away. Hopefully something works for you but let us know please. I'm pretty intrested in how this turns out for you and maybe can help others in this type of case.
Guys please read what all i've said before posting. I'm not completely stupid. i've tried flashing more than just one rom. i tried flashing about 6 roms, a radio, an two different kernels. Nothing flashes. no yellow progress bar... i have a bad recovery. And i can't go back to stock or manually install a new recovery or anything that includes htc sync because i can't enable usb debugging.. i've tried on a windows 7 computer, and have htc sync on it.
If you cant flash anything in recovery, nor can you enable usb debugging. (to convert to stock, or fastboot intalling, or manual intalling, adb, ect... ) then what am i supposed to do?
I think i'm the first person in the world to have this problem on a hero.

Since I dont know about the captivate that much it should not be different by much since its android. You need to download the STOCK ROM for your phone. Basically it is the software your phone came with out of the box. You need to put it on your zipcard and boot into bootloader(ask a fellow captivate owner how to get into this) and it will recognize the stock rom zip if named correctly and automatically update/restore your phone. Then you can reroot and install your recovery and start all over.
I Haz 3D!
Thanks for the help man, i was able to reflash it eventually. the weird thing is that now if i connect as mass storage once, it wont do it again without restarting the phone.
Are you plugging your phone into a USB port that's closest to the motherboard? Odin is finicky. Is your USB cable good? What Rom were you running when you messed up your phone?

Hello. I have searched the forums and have not really found out an answer to my question. Earlier in the week I tried installing Andromeda with an ursa minor kernal I believe? (I was following a tut on youtube) I succesfully got ursa minor on my phone but the tutorial failed to mention I had to put Andromeda on the internal sd card to flash it. Odin bricked my phone because it is build number 1108 :/ I have an infinite ATT world phone boot loop because of this. I will be trying to make a jig/buying one soon to get back into download mode to fix this. I am not sure exactly what I am supposed to do once I am in download mode. I want to get back to stock. Obviously Odin One Click doesn't work because of my build number. What steps should I follow to go back to froyo 2.2 and to retry? Please help I am just not sure.

When I got my phone (about a two weeks ago) it came with 2.2 already on the phone. I don't need to get to 2.1 but I was thinking I'd go to 2.1 and then upgrade to 2.2 using att? If I can?
But why? If you got it as is and its stock its att's 2.2. At any rate If your so inclined on flashing 2.1 the one you mentioned thats using full Odin with pit should work. I suggest doing it if and only if you have that jig handy. Also keep in mind that .tar probably has bootloaders in it (wich is a risk you really dont need to take) just my 2 cents

This is a Odin 1 click for KB1 2.2 stock. After that follow any roms instructions except if it says stock 2.1 ignore it and assume its stock 2.2

Links in that thread seem to be broken:/ So I suppose I can't use that.
Ive never used this one but it is also a KB1 2.2 KB1
My ultimate goal is to get Andromeda3 on my cappy. It seems to be a good rom. Could I just flash that using oden? (put it in the pda slot) or will that not work until I go back to stock?
With this new thread you linked me to, Just put in odin and I should be good to go? Thank you for your help by the way.
Ive never used that rom. Follow their instructions and assume stock is 2.2 for you. Also The original link i sent you should have worked. Aperrantly mediafire.com is having issues tonight.
installing Andromeda3 doesnt require going back to stock, 2.2 or 2.1.
ODIN flash a custom CWM kernel
boot to recovery
flash rom
thats it

Once I get my jig hopefully mediafire is up and I can download from the first link you sent me. That seems to be my best bet right now. Thank you for your help. I sure hope I can get my phone backXD

you are stuck in a boot loop right?
if you power your phone off, hold down both vol buttons and hold down the power button until the ATT screen comes up, let go, does it not go into recovery mode?
or
download mode:
power off, while holding both vol buttons, plug in usb. does that not work?

Get ursa minor back on your phone, then mount usb in mounts and storage, then copy the Andromeda3 zip to the drive. You were almost there.
Fish around in the usb port with 301kOhms of resistance from radio shack. You will hit pins 4 abd 5 and you will be in download mode.

No:/ no button combos work to get me in recovery or download mode. Getting a jig (hopefully today) so I can fix all this. Yes it is in a boot loop

Thanks. I tried putting the Andromeda on the phone by copying it over to the phone through the mounted sd card but it was all of a sudden "write protected" and showed up as a cd instead of an sd card. :/ I know I was real close but I made some mistakes along the way
also, when you say fish around the usb port. you mean inside the phone? Is there any danger of hitting the wrong pins and possibly hurting my phone? (say i hit pins 3 and 5 by mistake or something) or is it all pretty safe? I was going to try and attempt the jig method that only used the resistors but n oticed the pins were horrible small in the phone:/

It's not inside the phone... it's the USB port on the phone. One pin is on top and the other is on the bottom. If you don't have a JIG, that's the easy way to do it. There's no power on the USB port. This is a quick way to do it. You'll be fine. It's safe.

Sorry, that is what I meant. I meant to place where the charger is plugged in to. Just seems like the pins are really really tiny. Thank you for your help gonna get my resistors hopefully today and get my phone working again.
