ok I have a problem:
I got started on my Mums phone..
opened up odin
grabbed the wrong file - I was supposed to select 'Aries_P-SBL..yaddayadda' (I wanted to get 3 button recovery working.. I accidently selected the speedmod kernel file..
it then rebooted & never got past the first screen with the samsung name & phone model on it.
started to panic.. tried repeatedly to get into recovery.. nothing.. tried to put the Aries file on.. failed.. tried *heaps of times to get into recovery again.. nothing.. tried to put the Aries file on.. success!!! I can now get into recovery!
BUT
it still doesnt go any further than the very first screen with the samsung name & phone model.. basically, I'm quite certain that all I have to do is some how get darkys v7.0 on there & I'm set.. how do I do that seeing as I cant get the phone to boot into its OS, thus I cannot transfer the file across like I did with mine when it was connected to the pc?
cannot get phone to act as dumb storage device
CWM working, check - when I boot into recovery I can see CWM related things (& fiddle with settings RE: to it) - I can also see the speedmod things & fiddle with settings...
I grabbed an mSD card, chucked Darkys v7 on it, put it in phone... cant seem to direct it to it.. it cant 'see' the ex.sd card while in recovery.. I made an attempt to mount the ex.sd (or so I thought) but no go
the adb program sees it, so does odin..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712433
ok so followed the instructions.. a command window popped up, stayed a while, then, just before it dissappeared, text came up - dunno what it said.. the file isnt on there tho. I attempted this with the phone in recovery mode
yeah, I can get it into d/l mode..
rather not put anything stock on there atm.. I've got a bad feeling about doing that
I can have the phone in 3 diff states:
recovery mode
download mode
sitting on the very 1st screen with the samsung name & phone model displaying..
on my first attempt @ pushing the file onto the phone, I put it into recovery (is there a nice, non-confusing way to abbreviate 'recovery'?) mode - & it didnt work.. I just tried d/l mode.. the command window popped up, but only came up for a split second - too fast for it to transfer the ~190MB file.. I'll check, but I doubt it...
edit: na, didnt take
sorry for the 'copy & paste' job from another forum.. any ideas on what to do?
no one?
Umm, your post is a little unclear, but I'll try and help.
As long as you have download mode, you should be fine to flash any stock rom with odin. Why are you scared to flash a stock rom? It's very strange
You probably should select repartition in odin and flash a middle package firmware (ie. as richothen often provides, or any eclair firmware afaik).
Then if you want a custom rom, flash CWM or any kernel with CWM recovery, and flash the rom.
Pretty simple...
essentially, all I want to do is transfer darkys vs7 onto the phone, but I cant do it the usual way (which is thru windows & when the phone itself is in its os)
the phone wont boot into its os - its stuck @ the very first screen - I can only get into recovery mode & download mode
so how do I tranfer a file?

you could flash a stock rom and then start from the begin and do everything again?
I dont think I can flash any rom - I would need to transfer the rom file onto the internal sd, which I cant do
I need to know how to transfer a rom file (preferably darkys vs7) onto the internal sd, using either recovery mode or download mode, as the phone will not boot into os (it hangs @ very first screen)
alternatively, how do I get rid of either CMW or speedmod? or both?
better yet, how do I get the phone to boot into os?
surely someone has an answer?

didnt work..
in fact.. I've made it worse.. I can no longer go into recovery mode.. & the phone no longer displays the first normal screen - it displays the phone-!-pc thingy
ok I reflashed the 3 button fix on & the speedmod.. now I'm back to where I was before
can someone please please help me with this?
its been like this for almost 3 days
Get to download mode, flash a stock rom through odin, (whatever you had before the whole mess), then start over. Make sure you have all the correct settings when flashing with odin, using the right pit file etc etc.

yep just did that:
mild progress..
did the flashing..
no longer hangs @ the first screen.. instead, it gets past it, plays the samsung 'S' tune & clip.. then shows the S for a while longer.. then goes to a blank screen, which is where it stays, occassionally vibrating as well... thats it, thats all it does
Thats the symptoms of a bad/incorrect flash .
Flash again with all the correct settings and files .

Try this. This is legendary unbrick me ROM from Eugene. Flash it with Odin in PDA only and Pit from the package.

Hello all and thx in advance.
ATT Captivate batch 1010
I had Cognition 2.3 I think on my phone and it worked great however I wanted to try a different ROM so I attempted to restore my phone to stock using ODIN one click. I realized after that that I never disabled the voodoo lag fix or deleted my user data.
Now I am stuck in a boot loop that either shows the white ATT logo screen flashing every couple seconds or the phone off charge screen re starting every couple seconds.
I bought a USB Jig and it works great so I can get into D/L mode easily but I have tried flashing the stock firmware at least 6 times now using different machines, different ports, different versions of ODIN and I've searched around these forums and others for several hours trying to find a solution. It seems that I needed to erase my user data in recovery mode and removed the lag fix before I did this but it is what it is. I have tried to get to recovery mode to no avail. All I can get to is download mode.
Any ideas on what I should/can do?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think that you may need to use the Froyo Odin (JI6).

please help, i have the same problem, was flashing back to stock from a serendipit 5.12 so that i could get the 6.0 version... all went as planned until odin said "reset" which was my cue to unplug and that the process was complete.... i unplugged the phone and tried to reboot and now it does exactly as the first post described, at&t logo then black screen, then back to the at&t logo then black screen again... my computer doesnt recognize my phone none of the methods of getting to download screen will work... no matter how many times i pull the sd, sim, and batt, no matter the button combination i use or which order i use them in.... same result... i cant afford a new phone i need help, i will donate also... i knew this stuff was over my head, but "curiosity killed the cat" i guess...
I had the exact same problem. Try this method, it's the one that worked for me when all others failed... But remember to follow it EXACTLY.
1. Pull out the battery.
2. Hold Volume UP+DOWN (Don't let go of them until you see the download screen).
3. Stick in the USB (which is connected to the computer).
4. Put the battery back in.
If not, you might need to get a USB Jig.
That Froyo Odin link worked!
Thanks guys I flashed to Froyo and it worked!
I've since flashed clockwork recovery and gotten Serendipity 6.1
As far as getting into download mode I had to use one of the USB jigs.
I ordered one from the guy who does the rom reviews but you could make one as well.
On another note the new ROM seems to be discharging my battery really fast
Before I start investigating it as a problem I am going to charge it completely then let it discharge completely to calibrate it.
Thanks again guys
Rob
I just fixed mine last night, I had the exact same problem because of the exact same upgrade. What you need to do is get or make a usb jig. There's a couple resources around here for how to do it.
Here's a video showing how to make one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
Once I got my phone into download mode, I used Darky's ROM Resurrection Edition ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671 ) to restore my phone. Just scroll down to where it says "Files Needed" and download the Captivate version. Once you have that downloaded, use the jig to put your phone into download mode and follow the directions in the Darky's video (jump to about 2:30 into the video). Once I had my phone booting, I used clockwork to install Serendipity 6.
Hope that helps you as much as it helped me!!
went to radio shack, got all the stuff to make a jig and i was able to get my phone into download mode! now to try darko...... thanks everyone!
odin doesnt reconize phone
which odin3 are you using? 1.7? or the one click to stock?
you mentioned you had the bootloop problem before, so you should be using odin 1.7 with 2.2 stock.
open odin
get phone into download mode with your nice jig
unplug jig and plug in computer
box in odin should turn yellow.
And make sure you have the correct drivers installed. CRUCIAL.
Multiupload links not working
I'm stuck in the same situation as the OP.
I've been trying to use the method mentioned in the quote below, but the multiupload links are not working for me. I've been trying for 2 days to get to these files.

Yep, tried the Odin one click - caught in a boot loop with the AT&T Logo. I have yet to try the Heimdall one.
UPDATE
Tried Odin and Heimdall One-Clicks - unsuccessful. I'm think I will need the stock Eclair firmware file with Odin and the pit file.

You ever get this to work? - I'm in a similar situation. all flashes 'work' but get stuck at ATT on boot. Not sure Eclair is an option or not since mine is a refurbished phone that started on 2.2

If one-clicks aren't working, you might need to grab the full version of Heimdall or Odin and flash a full package. Some of the newer phone builds don't like one-clicks.

Can you get into download mode?
What rom were you trying to flash? And what version of Odin were you using?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
That happened to me...kind of like a snow screen but multi colored???
The problem was that the kernel was not compatible with the rom.
I was able to get mine into DL mode with a jig I made and re flashed a verified compatible kernel and all was well.
Its not bricked you just need to boot into download mode and use odin one click back to stock or flash the right kernel
Sent from my Captivate
I had this happen last month also, it was a bad flash going from Stock 2.2 to Continuum I think. Culprit was a cheap cable, so look out for that next time. Built a jig from the connector of the cable and all was well in Cappy-land.

You are not bricked.
If you can't get into download mode via buttons, build the jig.
it's really easier then it looks (it looked intimidating at first).
And once you do it successfully you will feel better about yourself.
it may take a few tries specially if you don't follow the instructions correctly
I was rooting my i9000 on 2.3.3 with this CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVO-v3.2-CWM3RFS and had a power cut midway.
My phone now is just displaying a black screen with a small pc and mobile phone with red exclamation triangle between them.
Can anyone please advise how I can restore?
Any help appreciated.
first pull the battery: let it sit 5 minutes. Then use the 3 button mode and go into download mode, re-initiate the flash of the kernel for rooting. If that fails, repeat but flash stock frmware first.
Its a soft-brick...
Go back to download mode and flash again...

Thanks lads that did it, got back to download mode.
But when i try to re-flash with cf-root it just hangs at zimage, even though right boxes have been ticked and i'm using tthe right firmware corresponding to mine which is JVO.
Any reason what could cause this and anyother way to get beyond the download mode.
You can try flash stock rom, or just get the stock kernal if you dont want to loose anything
I dont think stock kernal deletes your apps, definitely not int sd
...flash stock frmware first.
Flash stock firmware first and let it go all the way to full boot where you can see that everything works well again. Then go back to download mode and flash the rooting kernel on PDA, you should bee fine after that.

Thanks for all the help, finally got it done.
I have searched for the last 24 hours on this site for any mention of this problem and found nothing. I apologize if it has been covered elsewhere and would appreciate a link if I should be there instead of here. I am new to this forum.
I have an AT&T Captivate that I bought used for my wife. It was rooted and running some version of non-official Gingerbread when I got it (so it had been messed around with).
I have never been able to get into RECOVERY mode having tried every conceivable button and timing sequence at least 1 million times (3-button neutered?). I also have Android SDK installed on my PC and can send the "adb reboot recovery" command but it locks up at the AT&T screen and won't go any further so the PC is talking to the phone but the phone refuses to obey. Yes I have tried different USB ports and cables, un/reinstalling drivers, etc. The weird thing is that I can get into DL mode easily with the batt out, vol+/-,USB cable trick.
I originally took the phone all the way back to a stock Froyo ROM via Odin which appeared to work fine (but still no recovery mode) and then flashed to GB 2.3.5 with Kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489 via "kh3_heimdall_cwm-One-Click_GB_2_3_5.jar"
Phone works OK now but I still can't get into RECOVERY mode. Unless I am mistaken, there are no ROMS available later than GB that can be flashed via Odin- all of the later ROMs need to be installed from recovery mode. The point of all this is that I want to try upgrading to ICS or JB but can't figure out how to do it without a way to get into recovery mode.
So the question is: How can I get recovery mode to work?
And: How can I update the ROM with no way to get into Recovery mode? Is it even possible?
Returning the phone is obviously out of the question as it is "obsolete" and I am not the original owner.
Thank you for any helpful insights.

Since you have no problems getting into download mode I suggest you start by going to this link... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843 Go to the third post and download the Odin one click of KK4 with bootloaders.
After you do the one-click back to stock go to this link... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294477&highlight=corn+kernel and get the odin flashable version of 7.06 or 7.0A and if you don't already have Odin you'll of course need that too. Get yourself back into download mode and flash that kernel and it should give you back your recovery via the 3 button combo.
Worked! (eventually...sort of...)

m1batt1,
Thank you sooo much! It ALMOST worked!
- DL'ed Odin 1-click KK4 w/BL's as suggested, ran it, it failed and semi-bricked my phone... (phone--/!\---comp). Doh!
-Figured you were on the right track so DL'ed "I897UCKK4 Odin One Click - Stock, CONTAINS Bootloaders, Re-partition, Full Wipe" from 4-2ndtwin's post further down the same thread.
-after much anxiety and messing about to get it to connect, it successfully flashed!
-For the FIRST TIME EVER, I can get into recovery mode!
-followed up with corn kernel 7.06 as suggested with no problems
-now that the phone works as advertised, time for JB!
The funny thing is, I went back to stock ROMs several times and recovery never worked until now... go figure...
^
...then it had to be that KK4 one click in that 3rd post that fixed the prob.

I'm glad it got you back up and running! Now get your JB flash on! There are plenty to choose from for our "ancient" captivates.
One word of advice though. Coming from the point you're at now any JB ROM you flash will likely knock you into a boot loop on the first flashing attempt. Nothing is wrong just three button into recovery and flash again.

4-2ndtwin: Thanks for the suggestion to back up the efs folder. I hadn't done that before and now I am feeling VERY lucky that my phone still works at all! It lowered my stress level appreciably plus it was good practice using SDK.
m1batt1: Thanks for the heads up on the double flashing of JB ROM! It saved considerable unnecessary panic (although it was still somewhat unnerving)!
