Hi Experts,
I have a Cappy and i love Continuum 5 ROM. I never miss any versions from beta2 to RC 3, everything is ok, but now when contimuum v5.1 was released. I tried to flash it but i got a big problem in that version. The first, i encountered Boot Loop issue while booting, but it's not the biggest problem, my cappy is still boot up to the home screen, and here everything was became very bad. My Cappy got lag and cant interact with return and it reboot automatic after that.
Now, when v5.1 was released, i believed it'll be fixed, but it's still exists. .
my cappy cant boot up to home screen. it repeats booting to continuum animation and restart forever.
can anybody give me a suggestion for turning my cappy back !!!!!!!! Please help
Did you have full battery? I made this mistake too... Be sure that you did everything correctly..
Sent from my captivate using XDA App
I would suspect you could simply use the 1-CLICK ODIN program to restore the phone then follow the steps carefully for 5.1 (which is a pretty awesome ROM btw)
I'm sure i charged full battery before flashing.

Your best bet is the jig. If that doesnt work then I would try and get a warrenty replacment. I went over the thread and it stated that if you get a bootloop you should boot into recovery and reflash the rom, did you do that?

If you lost bootloader then you will have to JTAG, if your under warranty you can say you were updating to froyo and it turned off and never turned back on

right. i got a bootloop when flash to v5.2. i tried to flash the rom in recovery mode many times, but it's still exists. even i flash back to RC3. i got only the android text animation on the screen.
thus i have to flash to the stock by that way. and now i got a brick
I've had problems in the past with getting to download mode on the cappy. I did some googling trying to find a way, ended up finding a very good page on it:
http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode
I hope that helps.
Had the same problem with my cappy. The problem is that after all you did, you have one bootloader from i9000 and another from i897. The jig won`t help. I`ve found the people that recovered the phone with JTAG.
cappy wont go into dl mode and 3 button combo wont work. it just loops at att screen. cant flash to stock with odin. nothing works. i ordered a jig. is it my only hope now or should i call att and have them get me a new one?
jig will work.... how did you get to this point? odin one click could cause a bootloop for later build phones if thats what happened use this package when your jig arrives

another edit: oh forgot to ask. is there another way i can fix it without a jig?
did just what you said but now im getting kernel panic. what should i do?
umm...can you still get in download mode? try it again could judt be a bad flash...
or you can flash a froyo kernel(like speedmod) in odin and then flash a custom rom with its baked in cwm...just note: doing this will cause a bootloop from where you are now, so flash the kernel, after that boot into recovery with the 3 button combo, mount and transfer a froyo rom onto the sdcard and flash that.

flashed the kernel but the 3 button wont work to get in recovery. omg i hope this thing isnt totally bricked. its my brother in laws phone.
so...you have speedmod installed and the button combo isnt working. its bootlooping im guessing now right? which means its not bricked. anything other than completely unresponsive to anything is not a brick.
did you try just reflashing the stock rom agin at this point, or will it not go into download mode either? if it wont then its jig time, but its seriously an elementary school electronics science class project...or under 10 us dollars if you absolutly cant get your homemade one to work.

got my jig and have to use it to go into dl mode. installed speedmod with odin and when i do that the 3 button wont work. tried stock rom from cezars thread and 1click but it just keeps looping. i dont know what to do and again thanks for all your help.
hmmm....2 ideas then. try and flash a rogers stock rom, since i assume you are wanting to flash a rom on top of stock anyway.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133
and then use this to change the boot splash to one of your choosing.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944353 (scroll down to trusselo's post with the links)
or as another option try gingerbread...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045734&highlight=tut
only try this if none of the rogers roms work, as you will need to use odin one click to restore the stock bootloaders and we know that phone doesnt like one click...
Edit: Didn't read that all the way through, my comment is now moot.

Make sure you're using a usb port that is on the motherboard (back of computer). Before you plug in your phone to flash, set up Odin first. Put all the files you are going to flash in the right places. After Odin is fully set up, plug in the usb to the back of your computer, then to you phone. Make sure you are in download mode. If the usb still isn't working, try a different USB port that is on the back of the computer. Connecting the usb to the back of the pc is very important. Odin doesn't recognize my phone when it's plugged in the front, when the phone is in download mode. Only the back usb ports.
If Odin still doesn't recognize the phone, try a different USB cable. But do everything else the exact same way as I described.
Also make sure you fully setup Odin before you plug your phone in to the usb.

You probably have mismatch kernel and bootloader loader. Maybe you can try to wipe data / factory reset in recovery.

If you continue to go into a bootloop then I recommend a USB jig for the galaxy s series. I had had that happen before, Nothing worked, couldnt get it into download mode, couldnt get into recovery, Until I got the USB jig, Fixed my problem right away, and I flashed back to stock. The USB jig is only 6 bucks on ebay. Ill link you if you are interested.

Are you sure? Becuz I tried to flash an overclock kernel on my rom, and kept getting a bootloop. Then after flashing a few different kernels, the kernel that came with my rom didn't even work. I had to go back to stock and reflash my rom.

noob advice
I'm a noob, so this comment might just serve to show how little I know, but whenever I find myself in a bootloop situation, I've noticed that the problem starts with the initial attempt of installing a rom via a kernel with an older version of CWM. During the post-install boot sequence, I'll see the AT&T splash screen, a CWM screen with script running, and then a reboot. Usually, accessing the CWM (now on a higher version) and reinstalling the rom will get it working. Not quite kernel / bootloader mismatch, but close.

Buy a jig. Either off of Ebay or mobiletechvideos.com
That week get you into download mode.
Then find the HEIMDALL flasher for a build. (my favorite was the one click for saurom Kk4)
Install heimdall drivers, and flash. Boom. Functioning phone.
Hey everyone. I looked around the forums for a situation similar to mine, and didn't find a case exactly the same as mine, though it's possible I missed something. Basically, my little sister said her captivate was randomly shutting down lately, so I decided to root it for her. I rooted my own HTC Inspire this summer with no problems, so I figured I should be able to do it. The root went just fine, but when I tried to get into 3 button recovery mode, it wasn't working. I had read some stuff (obviously not well enough) and read somewhere to install the speedmod kernel. Now I'm stuck in a boot loop and can't get off of the Galaxy S/SGH-I897/SAMSUNG screen. I tried to go into download mode, but now I can't get into that mode either. Any ideas? I read on the forums about making a JIG, and I might have to end up doing that, but if I can avoid it, I'd like to. Thanks in advance.
Depending on what stock rom u were on before that flash of the speedmod kernel, it may not boot ur phone, because i believe it was froyo based. And if u got it from TRusselo's Guide thread it was there just so u could use it to reboot into cwm recovery and flash a dev rom. Have u tried holding both volume up and down & power buttons together until u see the at&t screen and then releasing the buttons ?? That should boot u into cwm. And from there u can flash a dev rom.
Download mode is--phone off, hold volume down, insert micro usb end of cable into phone, having already opened Odin or Heimdall and usb end of cable already connected to pc. Or of course, jig will do the trick for ya.
U could also try flashin an appropriate kernel for ur firmware u r on --- stock or dev'd. But u will need to still get into download or recovery for that. But i would think u should be able to boot up with no probs with a correct kernel.

I did manage to get it into download mode. I had the usb cord already connected to the phone when I was holding Volume-, so that was the problem with that. Buuuut, I can't get into CWM at all. Holding Volume+ and Volume- plus the power button loads it directly into the Samsung logo screen, then reboots the phone. Maybe I need to reinstall CWM?

I already went ahead and did that, and it's loading back to the regular start screen. Now I'm just trying to get CM10 on there for her, but according to their installation instructions, I need to be able to get into CWM recovery using the 3 button combo, which is where I'm currently stuck. According to one guide I'm reading right now, installing the corn kernel should fix the problem.

Yeah, still can't get into recovery. I turn off the phone, hold both volume buttons and the power button, but then it just stays at and keeps reloading the samsung loading screen (which now says i9000 instead of sgh-i897 like it did before). If I let go of the power button while on this screen, it progresses through the 3G/ATT screen and finally turns on the phone. Not sure what I need to do now. More research apparently.

Which KK4 did you flash? With the I897 bootloaders or I9000? And did you flash Corn kernel?
Getting in recovery can be tricky with the button combo. you could use ROM manager to get in recovery if you did flash Corn.

Well, I assumed it was the I897 one since the guide I had been using was for that version of the captivate, but I'm going to redownload one so I can be sure. The model number under phone info says "SAMSUNG-SGH-I897" and the kernel version is the "Cornv706" version.
Also, couldn't get into recovery with ROM manager either; it just got stuck at the Samsung screen.

Yeah. So this is what happened. Phone was bricked. Black screen only. Then my friend tried flashing it. Got into download mode. Flash it with odin. Installed it with a new rom. Unluckily, he downloaded wrong rom and then installed it on it. Now the boot screen flashes samsung vibrant.
Then, had my phone back on me. I tried flashing it again with ODIN, but I can't go through the download mode. So, it was unsuccessful.
The problem is, how can I get back the download mode without jig. / without purchasing any hardware? Can it still be fixed?

Considering your situation you probably will need a USB Jig... Its the same problem the other guy had in the thread that freakymod linked.
It can still be fixed, definitely, but it'll require you to either buy or make a USB jig.

If you can't enter to ANY mode, your phone is probably Hard-Bricked. You can try with constructing a USB-Jig (if you don't want to purchase one) with some resistors. Here are the links for making it:

Hope it had helped you!
Jigs are super cheap I don't see why its a huge problem. I got one just for convenience. Love it.
