[Q] Rooted G1 has setting error - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got this phone rooted G1 thats was stuck at the welcome screen, but got pass that and now when i try to load setting on the main menu .I get the error message.
Error :the application nexus launcher (processcom android.launcher2) has stopped unexpectedly.please try again
the build for from the recovery menu is :
build cyanogenmod v1.4 +JF
Can this be fix/corrected ?

Sound like you have a bad launcher (Like ADW that I had), see if you can download the other (IE: GO Launcher EX) one from the market.

Will the phone function to get to Market without a launcher? I've never tried. After installing a new one, it only asks me to select one/set permanent when or if I press the Home button. I can still use Back.
Can you use ADB to install or copy an APK then reboot? Or better yet just flash a newer ROM in recovery. It's usually a last resort, but since that's quite an old ROM it'd be worth it.

I dont think ive seen this before!! Please check this out and help

hey guys, i am not new to the scene but i have actually run into a big problem.
A few minutes ago i flashed a Hero rom followed by the ebi1 kernel, it booted up perfectly fine and went into installation, still no problems.
Once installation finished i learned that for some reason the home app(launcher) doesn't load, it just constantly gives an error force close when trying to go to the home.
Everything else does work.
I then decided to reflash the ROM, when booting my phone it would not go into recovery, i held the home button and it froze at rogers logo,
I tried again after a battery pull and same result, i thought uh oh, BRICK!
When i rebooted again( holding nothing down ) I learned that it apparently does boot! if i leave it alone, it does the whole buttons light up screen dims thing just before it boots, then the screen dies off and I hear a sound meaning usb connected, **(all this while it is still showing the second boot screen)**
The end button works to turn screen off and on but it it stuck at the second (MLGIN or whatever nexus style boot screen)
I nave now found a way to actually get past the boot screen, if i call the phone it will go into the dialer and I can actually use it as a phone!!, once in like this I can actually use the phone completely except for going to launcher(home), I can make calls (if someone calls me to get into the dialer), use the lockscreen, send a message (if someone sends one to me), enable usb mount.
I have a nandroid and a BART saved but like I said i cannot get into recovery.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Please let me know if my post doesnt make any sense, i can try and get my thoughts out again!
EDIT I CAN get Droid explorer to work, this means i can install any apps that could help! but i dont think i could launch them
-with droid explorer i can use terminal, cant i launch stuff with that? also, when i click Bart manager it says i need to buy a license, aww
- I clicked on reboot into recovery in droid manager, the phone rebooted but it hung at the rogers logo, I really cant understand how the recovery doesn't work!
EDIT it WILL boot into fastboot mode!
Can i install an alternate launcher with droid explorer, I think that if i can do this, when i hit home it will give me the option of choosing which laucher right? i then choose the new one.
Any one know where to get a different launcher? or perhaps the launcher from this ROM so i can try and reinstall it
Because i can use droid explorer, the options are nice,
I still need help organising the above attempt, but if that fails I could also use the flash recovery image option in DE and try that.
Am i right in saying that I should first try and get a different launcher to work or should i go straight for the recovery. If the recovery doesnt wokr could I lose access to the phone booting? (thus droid explorer)
OK I would LOVE some community help here:
I think i wave 3 options
1) install any apk (namely a new launcher and get the phone to atleast function properly)
2) Re flash a recovery image
3) Flash a ROM
All of these would be done with droid explorer, i think i have listed them from least risky to most risky (if i flash ROM and that doesn't fix it i could be out of droid explorer)
Could you guys help me start up, where can i get what, my mind is racing too much!!!
ok, using droid explorer i re flashed the recovery, it now boots into recovery. i am going to reflash the hero rom as i really want to use it!

N1 wont boot into bootloader! Instead goes to OS

Facts:
Ive searched the site multiple times, cannot find the same issue elsewhere
Ive unlocked my bootloader and rooted my N1, so I know how to access the bootloader/recovery
When I hold down the rollerball and hit power to start the N1, it boots straight to the OS, not the bootloader menu
The OS is: Android 2.2, Build FRF50, Kernel [email protected] #5
The OS doesnt show a cell signal
The OS has lines through moving graphics
The OS crashes to the X graphic with the moving colors about every 30sec to 2 minutes
I can access abd-mac commands via usb, but ./adb-mac reboot recovery just reboots my phone back to the OS again
I tried http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/RE-recovery-img
but the last step of ./adb-mac shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
comes back with "error opening /sdcard/recovery.img: No such file or directory
Im sure the recovery.img is on the sd card
in the gui of the OS I tried looking at the available space of the sd, and it states sd- unavailable
available space - unavailable.
Any more ideas?
I can think of three options:
boot to fastboot by holding the trackball while turning on the phone (you say this doesn't work)
boot to bootloader by holding volume down while turning on the phone
if your OS is stable enough, try installing "Quick Boot" from the market (it requires root). That app has the option to reboot to either bootloader, or recovery
just follow this guide forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=636795 no such file is because you have to put the recovery image in the root folder of the sd card in other words it should'nt be within another folder when you open and view your sd card.

Thanks slickynice, but recovery.img is on the root of the sd card.

Thanks pikipirs. vol down while booting doesnt do anything for me either. I cant access anything with market. Is there a way to manually install the "quick boot" app with abd-mac?
Try something like rom manager or quickboot and see if they can get you into recovery?

Hold on, I'll find the APK for the free clockworkmod rom manager.
Actually he hasn't posted an APK, why can't you get it from market again?
My OS isnt stable enough, I have no radio, so I connect via wifi. When I go to the market, it says Loading.... and then the OS crashes to the X graphic with flying colors.... and the market is closed again.

Does ADB work?
Yes, adb-mac command works, but ./adb-mac reboot recovery or ./adb-mac reboot bootloader doesnt boot into the recovery or bootloader, instead it just restarts the phone back to the OS.
Thats why if I can get something to install via adb, I can do it that way, and hopefully get it to the bootloader to install a working rom.
is it stable enough to try to run an app?
amazingly trivial suggestion here, but have you attempted to reset to factory defaults from inside the system? Perhaps this will give you just enough stability to accomplish a recovery load so you can get your phone back to a happy state.
Of course, I have no idea why that would resolve your issue but nobody has suggested it yet and your situation sorta sucks
Best of luck!!
Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, it freezes up when I try to do factory defaults again. But I did a factory default before I put the bad rom on it, so its pain without any apps currently. Some apps will work like the browser for a few minutes. Not many other apps to use, since it was wiped prior.
Well, looks like Im going to send it to HTC. They said it will be $196+ to fix it. They have to replace the main board which, if its the only issue, is $196. Ill be shipping it out tomorrow. Anyone with any last suggestions before I bite the bullet on $200? I guess it beats buying the phone again for $580!
Try volume down and power to boot?

Tried it, just boots to the OS still.
Try safe mode? Turn it off, wait for the X and the unlock icon, then hold trackball until it boots. Should say "Safe mode" in the lower left corner. Might be able to get it running stable and fix from there.

I am able to boot to safe mode.... but Im not sure what I can do while in it that I cant do while in the OS otherwise.

Have you flashed the engineering rom? You need to do that.
Oh ok....I didn't know you had to flash that for it to work thanx so much for the help...they should tell you that on the app

ROM Manager is for every device that can run clockworkmod recovery, not just the slide. The slide is the only one that can't get a recovery to stick as far as I am aware, so there's no reason for them to include a warning in an app used by tons of devices when only one of them has the issue.
True...didn't look at it that way

I have a stupid ROM Manager question... I remember trying to use a while back and hit a snag. When you open it, it first wants you to install Clockwork Recovery, and of course we cant make ours stick. When I tried this a while back, I remember it breaking my recovery and took some fiddling to fix it. Should I let it run this option, so I can then use it to manage my ROMs?

It now has a recovery for the slide and it works great. It is the only I use to get in recovery.
So to be clear, I can use the Install CWR option from ROM Manager? I cannot do anything else in ROM manager without it wanting to "install" it.
on mine it is the first option "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", pop-up will show up and it only has the choice of "MyTouch Slide" after tapping that you are good-to-go for rebooting into recovery and flashing ROM's
Yeah I went ahead and did it. I get a lot of Superuser FCs still with it. I even hit the Fix Permissions, which says may fix FCs, and it FCs on me
that's odd I am running it on both of our phones without issue, didn't even have any issues running dumfuq's experimental dopio 960 oc kernel.
I see what happened. Cyans latest ROM comes with a different/newer SU app. When Rom Manager flashed recovery, it downgraded SU. I just grabbed the SU out of the latest CM6 ROM and pushed it to system in recovery and all is good. Running Fix Permissions now to see if it stops the FC I get on some uploader service upon each boot.
oh I forgot, unless you have already figured it out, the power button is NOT used for selecting in cwm anymore... volume still does "up" and "down", track-pad is now "select" and the back button works as "back page"
hopefully all is good.
So, Rom Manager can get you directly to Clockworkmod?
I just got a new Slide, rooted it, and immediately flashed the ENG build.
I then flashed MyFroYo6 with Rom Manager. No dice. What the hell am I doing wrong?

(Fixed) Accientally renamed BlurHome.apk stuck on boot now.

I accidentally renamed BlurHome.apk from /system/app after I installed the leaked update while I was trying to remove some bloatware and now its stuck on boot. Thankfully installed a Custom Recovery and can easily nandroid back to before I even installed recovery but I will have to do everything all over again. Is there a way to get into adb through recovery? I know about the .sbf but im sure it will put me to stock. Is there a way/update.zip to rename the BlurHome.bak to BlurHome.apk???
Try going to market.android.com and pushing Launcher Pro to your phone. Give it a couple of minutes, then do a battery pull.
Here's a how to - http://bit.ly/pOg5id

I saw that, for some reason it wouldn't work with my situations since it would never detect the phone after "adb wait-for-device shell"
It was kind of weird because phone would boot up fully, except it was stuck on boot screen and obviously Home Launcher wouldn't show, the device lock screen would still work thought and that gave me an idea, I called my phone and surprisingly the dialer showed up and the whole phone started to work (Notification bar, texts,SD card mount) so then I tried to get into Root Explorer somehow just using the dialer and texting app and there was no possible way. ADB kept giving me an error how it was a "read only file" even though i gave root permission. But everything works now thanks to Xenoproctologist Thanks!!

Cyanogenmod 11 issues

Hello,
Lately, I wanted to try this new version of Cyanogemod on my HTC Incredible Shttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2519414. Everything went well, but I noticed I didn't have access to my Sim contacts, there wasn't Google play installed. I did my research and found the solution, I need to install Gapps. I followed the instructions onhttp://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps, but the system can't open the file. Now I don't want to use this Rom anymore, and want to use another Rom. But, here's another problem. To install Cyanogenmod, I used 4EXT Recovery, and in order to do it I restarted my phone by choosing Recovery mode when I pressed the switch off button. When I tried to do the same procedure, the system don't give the choice ans restart automatically. I try to install it on my phone, but it is only available on Google Play, which I can't install.
I don't what to do. Thanks for your help and sorry for my bad English.

You aren't supposed to be opening the file. You're supposed to flash the GApps file in recovery just like how you flashed the ROM through recovery as well. Same process.
TO enable advanced reboot or something like that, go to "About phone" in settings. Then go to build number (should be the very bottom or close to the bottom) and click it 7 times to enable developer options. Enter developer options (this will appear int he regular setting menu once you click back) and click enable advanced reboot.
Just for future knowledge, it is important to know how to get into bootloader when the phone is off. This is done by pressing volume down+ power button at the same time. Then, by using volume key, scroll to recovery and press power button. That is the manual way of entering recovery
