Goodbye..... - Nook Color General

Okay, im not leaving B&N Nook Color for some POS Ipad 2. I am leaving the forums unfortunately for the Acer Iconia Tab a500. I will miss you all and you superior developers. I will check in from time to time but keep being geniuses, and if any of you devs venture over to the Iconia, feel free to bake up some roms!

iPad vs. Netbook

I’ve been an avid PC lover for years, and have only recently started to doubt my loyalty to the PC with the introduction of the iPad. I currently own a netbook to compliment my desktop computer its uses are vast and when it comes to working the fact that is has a proper keyboard makes it an incredible tool. I’ve had a chance to play around with Apples iPad and have now come to a crossroads.
I’m increasingly experienceing a pressure to like the iPad nowadays, especially since everyone’s got or wants one. I do have to admnit that the iPad is pretty cool with all of its apps, and more importantly for me, games. I didn’t mention before but I also own and iPod touch and it is one of the coolest things I’ve ever owned. Not too much until an iPad the touch screen and ability to run a plethora of games and apps is what made it such an enticing piece of tech for me. I’m slowly breaking down and falling for Apple products and I’m even thinking of buying an iPad. If this were Star Wars I’d be Luke Skywalker, Steve Jobs would be the Emperor and the iPad would be Darth Vader trying to convince me to take his hand and join the dark side of the force like in The Empire Strikes Back…

They were talking about the rooted nook color on wsj.com!

So I was using the pulse news app to read the lastest happenings and come across a link about a possible " Market at risk for bubble?" article on the Wall Street Journal site. I was pleasantly surprised when a reporter showed off his rooted nook color in a section titled "Look, Ma I turned my e-book reader into a tablet." He explains it only cost $200 and really enjoys it. I felt proud! The part about the nook begins around the 4:15 minute mark!

I wished he tried nookie froyo or even cm7. I need to send him an email with some links to tutorials.
God I love this community!

Nooking with Encore
Read something similar to this clip and has made me think about about how much a tablet should really cost.
The NC was always first and foremost an eReader so they could sell the hardware at a dirt cheap price and cover the costs through the books. I'm guessing they did not think too much about the margins on the hardware because of the book sales but it makes you think how much a tablet should really cost. Nothing in the market comes close to NC's cost at the moment.
I don't really buy into the component glut they are suggesting but I am guessing in the long run, tablets will become cheaper and cheaper which good for us all. I just remember the old episodes of Star Trek where the techies in the background all had tablets all busily working away in the background. The future is coming soon than we think
I hate how the barometer these days seems to be be...but does it have/run Angry Birds? He didn't even show any of the actual cool stuff you can do once rooted.

Why the nook forum is a good place to call home.

I just wanted to say how nice it is here in the Nook Color forums. Sometimes I wonder around other forums on xda, and I see so much hostility. I know this place used to be so cool. Before the wave of newbs. He'll, I am one of them. I just got my first android back in Jan. Now I am a full blown flashaholic. What I am getting at is, SORRY from all the newbs, all the stupid questions, and the shear size of the wave. And thanks, because of all the genius here, you caused the wave. Thanks to all of the authors, and cooks here in this forum. I have had very few problems, and when I did, people here were nice enough to help. The development here is awesome. Though the pool is smaller, I would rather have a nook than (insert device here).

I don't have to pay a data plan for the nook. That alone would cool me off. Especially Verizon's new data plan.
We are grandfathered in, just don't upgrade, and buy your phones outright. You will save money in the long run......

I second that - thanks to these forums, the nook color I bought on Saturday is now running CM7, overclocked, and netflix. Unfortunately I'll probably ask for more
I agree, the Nook Color section on XDA seems pleasant. I'm rather new to Android, having only owned my phone for a few months and my Nook for about half of one. I've been hanging out in the Atrix forums since thats what I own phone wise, and half the threads are complainers who hate their phones or dont fully understand the concept of donations asking why more isn't getting done. It gets tiring rather fast.
When I bought my nook, one of the big factors that made me decide on that tablet was seeing how peaceful by comparison the Nook community is.
I agree. Although I can't seem to find a thread "home". I have a rooted evo, have flashed several themes, mods, etc on that for nearly a year now. But I still feel like a newb here because the process is somewhat different. I've treid reading how to dual boot, TRIED to dual boot - nothing happened. Just happy I didn't screw the thing up with all the zip files on my sd card Tried to get netflix working....no go. People are very kind when I ask a question but I don't understand what language they are speaking in. I am used to "download, wipe cache, flash, boot". This adb, emmc, yadda yadda...I don't get yet.
BUT I do have a gorgeous NC that is really fast, very stable, and performs beautifully.
I also appreciate the atmosphere here. I knew nothing about android mods prior to owning my NC and now I've got it screaming fast and playing N64 games. This community has been super helpful though I've rarely sought out advise directly. I'm mostly a lurker. Messing with my nook has given me the confidence to jack around with my Thunderbolt. The TBolt forums are super helpful, but there is certainly a lot more trash talking and whatnot going on there. Thanks to all of you Nook peeps out there for keeping this forum courteous as well as useful.
I'd like to say thanks too. Not trying to be a fan boy or a sycophant kiss-up, but I'm really amazed the amount of Android intelligence the people have on this forum.
I got my nook color for the cheap tablet possibilities and have learned a ton here, appreciating everyone's politeness and knowledge and efforts. I didn't realize how much I visited until I looked at my net filter's stats for this place - I've clicked in around 900 times at XDA!
Jesus I am sorry to say this, but if I read the good book as much as I read xda forums, all my friends would be drinking for free....: p

I started hanging out at xda when I got my HD2 and wanted to do more than run WinMo on it. I've been hanging out in the NC forums since I bought my NC on Christmas Eve. I have learned so much! And done so much on my NC that never would have happened without xda. My friends are amazed when I tell/show them what it does. They think I'm a genius. I tell them I'm not smart, but there are a lot of smart people at xda who are willing to share their genius with the rest of us. Thanks to everyone who makes this possible.
Rooted NC running CM7 + my rooted/sd Android HD2 phone makes for a great overall Android experience!
And I tell people that if this 52 year old grandma can do it - anyone can!

I'd post this in the XOOM, Transformer, Iconia, NI Adam, GTab 10.1, etc. areas, too, since there aren't that many out there with Streak 7s, but there are a lot with Tegra2 devices.
I'd love to see them develop some more for Android, but their asking price is just too damned high (said int he voice of that "The rent is too damned high" guy). $15 for a game is a hard sell on mobile, even if it is a great one. Gameloft, Gamevil, etc. are selling for $2-5. $15 better blow my freakin' mind. If they had sold GoF2 for even $7, I might have impulse purchased it; $15, though, would get me 3+ games from another developer.
I agree the price tag is high in the way of mobile gaming which is a shame I personally played the whole game via the pirated one and bought the game out of principle cause its just a damn good game and retardedly addictive so when I say the game is worth it I mean it
Hell I pay 60 dollars per consol game and this game heres quality is just amazing
I appreciate you helping posting threads i figure enough of us makes a stink then it will help motivate them to develop for android devices that support it currently and do not currently support it

To be clear, I was suggesting posting in those forums; I wasn't volunteering!

Nook HD+ 9"

Nice to see more tablets hitting the 9" range! Maybe other major manufacturers will catch on and we'll have a plethora of 'ideal size' tablets to choose from! :fingers-crossed:

Interesting as came from a Nook Color a year ago which had the 7 inch form factor. I rooted and converted to cm7 pretty much immediately and served me well as a reader. Not sure if things have changed but B&N is more US centric than say Amazon which puts me off Nook. It will probably be rootable but just took a while to get the updates. Also not sure if camera is there for Skype but interesting.
8.9 is just the right size for me and waiting for ics or closest stable variant.

In all honesty, this new line makes me want to get another B&N tablet.
However, it seems as though many developers pledged to stop developing for it.... If this is the case, I cannot make that purchase.
With all the stress that the developers go through for basically free support and work, I don't blame them. I hope that they realize that they are helping us immensely, especially with limited budget and options.
Again, the B&N line offers many options that I was specifically looking for on a device within my budget. It seems like Android, Windows, and Apple are all going the way of the "walled garden". Therefore, I hope that the developers can bring themselves to assist in the new B&N tablets as they have done in the past.
To those developers giving up on B&N, please remember that you are doing many of us a great service and giving options which we would otherwise never have, without the fat wallet. Also, be aware that the less you share and develop for us your grateful users, the more we will look towards the big names for further apps, questions, and solutions, and the less we will look towards your options... something that I'm sure we would all hate to do, but necessity requires us to. To limit work on these alternatives is to limit consumers dependency on your work, and similar developers work in this forum, forcing us to support the big names, their wallet, and their agendas.
