is there a kernel that works normally with Gingerbread 2.3.3 on captivate ?
yeah quite a few.
they are the kernels in the dev section that say gingerbread or 2.3
and ask questions in the Q&A thread not the themes and apps...

They're only for cm7/miui though, won't work for samsungs i9000 jvk gingerbread rom.

Hi Guys
I am upgrading to a SGS i9000. Previously had a Motorola Milestone, custom kernel is new to me.
I've been searching and couldn't find anything. I want to load gingerbread XXJVK and use SpeedMod Kernel. Will this cause any problems? If I do experience problems would it be straight forward to go back to stock kernel?

Speedmod is a kernel designed to run with Froyo, not Gingerbread. Many custom 2.3.3 ROMs have you install Speedmod as an intermediary step just to get CWM installed, but it will not work with JVK. You will need to install one of the kernels specifically designed to support JVK.
I STRONGLY suggest you read the many threads posted here about JVK and the process of flashing to it, AFTER you have read the stickies about flashing ROMs on the i9000. Foreknowledge is always better than Support Calls.

Thanks for the advice. I keep going back to the stickies about flashing ROMs to i9000. I guess I will keep reading.
I would wait for the release of Gingerbread . Once its released the devs are going to have a more complete set up to work with .

There's no source to work from... so there's no speedmod as of now. Your best shot could be supercurio's hacked JVK kernel which can convert partitions to ext4. But remember, the rom is still a beta.
My SGS came today. I'm going to look at flashing darky's rom tonight.
I have Cyanogenmod7 RC3 on my milestone at the moment but I don't think I'll miss the 2.3 features.
Again thanks everyone for the advice
hi guys,

This is probably a noob question but I have a captivate using gt i9000 bootloaders, question is since im running these bootloaders would I then be able to use gt i9000 roms on my captivate? Im currently running mosaic on gingerbread.

No, because of hardware differences. The i9000 has a hardware button which the captibate does not, and other differences.

actually, all that needs to be done is to swap kernels in the rom with a reoriented I9000 kernel for the captivate the kernel is the zImage contained in the updates folder of the rom. Then go to xcal's thread and get the home button fix (or go into your favorite I9000 port and copy over everything in /system/lib/egl deleting overwriting what was there)
Biggity Bam! I9000 rom on a cappy.
There well be references to a forward facing camera in some apps (option for video call in phone.apk for example) that obviously won't work due to the captivate not having one.
BTW this is a question those get posted in q&a not in general. please post in the appropriate subforums in the future.
If you have less than 10 questions posted this thread is for you or else post in Doc's Master ICS Rom thread or for more info here
Vibranturk has just released V7 - major improvement.. enjoy!!!
No, that is not how it works. If you have a question period, you ask it HERE. Don't go clutter up the dev thread...
Is anyone having good luck with the uckk4 modem
It will never work on ICS unless someone implements the Code into the kernel. you have to use an I9000 Modem or Nexus S modem from the dev section
Hy everybody!

Read the Newbie guide in general section and you will understand Anyway, most of the mods present for SGA are fro GB only,so no harm done if you install it.Oh,and for Dev things, browse Development section
Hello dear XDA fellows.
I know questions like these are not very popular but I am on very short time to research and experiment. Also, not familiar with Galaxy S i9000 rom scene at all.
I need a rom for this phone, which will be used by a complete newbie to android/smartphones/touchscreens, so I cant expect them to know anything about tweaks or launchers.
I need a rom that is stable, looks most stock/Touchwiz (and/or feature rich) and preferably ICS. Preferably a port of SGS2 ICS or even modified SGS GB builds are fine.
Phone is currently running some CM9 ics build and is rooted. Thank you all for your recommendations
If you want GB try stock jw8 + semaphore kernel.
You can find the latest stock roms in ramads thread. Search it in the general section. You can find there all the instructions on how to flash with odin.
Cheers,
