[Q] Turning off 3G drops USB connection - HD7 General

HTC UK O2 NoDo and unlocked
Odd behaviour. I usually toggle off wifi, bluetooth, gps and data to save battery if I'm away for extended periods and speed up charging since you can't turn off the phone if connected.
1. Whilst USB connected. If I leave Data Connection On and turn off 3G. USB disconnects and orange LED turns off. No charge or sync with zune within 1 minute.
2. If I leave Data Connection On and turn off 3G before plugging in. Same thing happens. Again within 1 min.
3. If I leave Data Connection On and leave 3G On. Stays connected and charges/syncs with zune without any issue.
4. If I turn off Data Connection completely. Stays connected and charges/syncs with zune without any issue. But if I toggle Data Connection On whilst plugged in and 3G still off..again in 1 min it disconnects.
It is as if I toggle off 3G prior or after plugging in USB to a PC. Connection drops after 1 minute but not straight away.
Not a big deal. But curious if someone else could try the above scenarios, could be a WP7 OS thing, could be device specific or maybe I put too much homebrew apps and registry changes screwing it up.
Let me know you experience same thing! Many thanks

TMOUS HD7 here, no connection drop with 3g on or 3g off, even when i toggle while its connected to zune..I'm guessing it must be something you did to your registry..

Kaiser Tweak problem - Won't disconnect during sleep

I recently applied the Kaiser tweak to disable idle connections after 1 min - this works great when the phone is on, however, when it goes into sleep mode, this fails to work.
E.G. If I click send/receive on my emails then quickly put it into sleep, turn on the device in 10min and it would have stayed connected, once it is turned on after a minute it will disconnect.
This morning I turned on the device to see that it had connected to receive emails last night and had stayed connected for hours - of course once I turned it on the tweak kicked in and it disconnected after a minute.
So my question is, how do you get the tweak to work whilst in Sleep? Any work arounds?
Thanks in advance!
Hi
If you are referring to GPRS/3G there is no problem the connection remaining active. It isn't really active unless data is being transferred, it is just the session remains ready for data. The mobile operators prefer it working this way as it is less strain on the network creating a data connection and keeping it rather than setting them up/closing them down/setting them backup again.
It doesn't use any more power by remaining up.
The software isn't shutting down the connection when you have the phone in standby as quite simply the software will not be running in standby, everything stops in standby, so the program can't run to turn off the connection, until you turn the phone on again.

Phil
Hi Philip,
From my experience I have found that even if the data connection is open with no data flow (HSDPA / 3G ) it drains the battery much more than if it were closed.
Or is this just for HSDPA?

same question here...
Hi
There is a blog that explains what is happening from Microsoft.
I would guess that while the connection is active something on the device is seeing that and stopping the device from entering standby.
The actual connection itself remaining open does not drain any more power as it isn't doing anything different than just having your phone on waiting for a call.

Hi Philip,
Thanks for your response.
I have to say though from the last few days of tinkering, an open connection does drain more than a closed one even with no data flowing. This is with HSDPA, I have not tested this with just a 3G open data connection though...
Are we talking about the same things? I'm a bit new to this phone though sorry.
Thanks,

3G connection always on?

Im not sure how to change the settings, but I always see my 3g staying connected for long periods right now its at 45 mins. Im not sure how much it affects the battery life. My battery still says 98 % so I guess it's not too bad, but I still dont need it on all the time. Also I have changed the connection to shut off in kaiser tweak after 5 mins.
Thanks for the help
Well I installed new Comm Manager with 3G button. I turn it of there. It still connects to GPRS when I go to Internet but stays connected only for 1 minute because I have set it like that in my KaiserTweak.

which version KaiserTweak are you using?
Its probably staying connected as you have an app running that wants it connected.
If its dormant but connected I don't think there's any real downside.
Im not really sure what would be keep the connection alive. Is there a way to tell what app is using the connection ?
all I know of is just using the process of elimination. Use the task manager to turn off a program. If the 3G doesn't turn off a little after that then move on to the next one.

Loss to GSM Network

I have a TyTNII phone and after reading extensively through the threads posted, seems to have a unique problem.
My device will show the "E" icon and service provider in the Today screen and everything will be normal.
After connecting to the Active Sync via USB the phone will be normal for a while, but at some stage will disconnect from the GSM network and show no service.
At this stage the "E" icon changed to a "G". I have tried selecting the service provider, finding the network etc, but it keeps telling me to disconnect the data service and try again.
At first I thought it was blue tooth, but it does make no difference. I have loaded all the comm utils I could find and none is showing any active data sessions or connections.
Reset does not work, taking the SIM out and putting it back does not work, not even taking the battery out makes a difference.
All that seems to work is to put the SIM back in another phone and let the phone boot up to get GSM connection. After that I can put the SIM back in the TyTNII and all will be fine - even for days - as long as I do not connect USB to the PC.
Do you have any ideas on what I can do to solve the matter - it is irretating like hell to swap a sim every now and then...
could be wrong but is there a wired connection on your pc/laptop that uses a dial out and not gprs, this could cause it to run a connection on gsm on gprs.
Thank you for the reply - I have checked my pc and have no dialup connections - currently connected to Internet via Ethernet.
I have also checked the phone - during this shutdown period I am able to browse the internet from the phone.
This tells me that I have internet access, just no GSM service - its like the phone is switching the GSM network off, but GPRS and Edge is still working.
Hope that helps
Dunno where you are geographically, but At&t had some major down time last friday or thursday and it seemed again this week on tuesday or so.
Maybe this was effecting you? (boston area) Only time my kaiser does **** like that is when i leave something conflicting open, (mail, or a browser)
good luck

Data switching in G1

Hi. I've bought my first Android device, a HTC G1 Dream. I've gained root access, installed the last Cyanogen release (with Android 1.6), RA-1.2.3.
What I've noticed is a strange behavior, quite different from the one I had with my BlackBerry Bold.
When I'm home I enable wifi, to save some datas from my (limited) contract. It works and I've set not to disable wifi when in standby. It works. But as soon as I go out (and the wifi coverage finishes), it doesn't re-enable UMTS data until I awake it from the standby manually.
It's quite annoying...is there a way to change this kind of behavior?
Thank you very much!
Is it still connected to EDGE or GPRS? If this is the case it is a PowerSaving feature, if it's totally lost connection with the net then you have a problem I guess...

When I connect via Wifi, it disconnects from edge, gprs or umts. And doesn't reconnect when the wifi coverage ends (unless I "re-awake" the phone, pushing the menu button)
from what i read your saying thats while its sleeping its not connecting to your data services when your leaving wifi coverage, so my question is: do you not see the data icon when you wake up the phone but after waking it it comes on or are u assuming that its not on?

Yes, I cannot see the icon as soon as I wake up it. Then, in some seconds, it reconnects. More, I can see it's not just a "icon" issue because my K9-mail stops collecting my mailboxes when that situation happen.

Change WiFi scanning duration??

I saw a thread about change the duration for WiFi scanning when not connected to WiFi. I know it scans every 30 seconds to see what networks are available for use, i think this will have a huge impact on battery for user that want to keep WiFi enabled all day, which is what i would like to do if there is a fix rather then turning it on when i get home off when on the train and on again when at work and off on the train and on at home
I know draky ROM has this set to like 2 minutes, so is there a way we can change it on Doc 9.6.6 speedmod K13C??
EDIT:
just went in the WiFi setting even after connecting to my home network with full bars and everything works fast, it still seems to scan for networks every 5 seconds. Is there a way to disable the scans? It should only scan when not connected to a network and continue after a network is connected.

Not sure if its clear- Your phone will not scan for WIFI networks if its connected to a WIFI network already. It is not possible to scan while connected unless you explicitly go to WIFI settings and check there- then the phone will scan for you because you are asking it to scan.
On the other hand, you can modify the WIFI ON time using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774507&highlight=wifi+timeout
Hope this helps.
No im in the wifi settings and am for sure connected to my home network and i can see the scanning and the circle come up every 5 seconds. So it is scanning every 5 seconds even after connecting, i think it maybe a bug coz your right there is no reason for scanning to occur when already connected.
I'm not talking about the wifi sleep policy. In darky's ROm he has scanning set to 2 minutes so it will scan for networks every 2 minutes when its not connected to a network, for me i would like to change that to 15 - 30 minutes. I don't need it to connect right away when i get home or at work and find it stupid that it scans every 5 seconds for a network. If i really want wifi that badly i will do a manual scan and connect.
it will always refresh more frequently in the settings to let you know what is available to connect to... as soon as you close settings it will refresh less often.
i highly recommend juice defender... it will automatically turn off your wifi when disconnected for a while and connect it again later on. im pritty sure it checks when u turn the screen on. there are other settings and widgets that come with to control your 3g when its not needed to save battery

Maybe your work network doesn't broadcast ssid? You have to configure the connection manually if that is the case.
