[Q] Help with restoring to stock! - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i tried to use this guide to restore my phone to stock. I installed the correct drivers and the Odin3 One-Click Downloader. I tried to use method one but it wouldn't work and the random numbers and letters wouldn't pop up. So I restarted my computer and used the second method which booted the device into recovery mode.
Idk if this is important but the random numbers and letters were "0:[COM6]"
I didn't think it was right but once i saw those random numbers and letters pop up and the "start" button on Odin was clickable, I clicked it. My captivate has been siting connected to the computer for almost 2 hours nothing has happened. I am able to scroll up and down on my captivate in recovery.
But in Odin neither the "Start" button nor the "Master Clear" button is clickable.
Under the message box for Odin it says:
<ID:0/006> Added!!
<ID:0/006> Odin v.3 engine (ID:6)..
<ID:0/006> File analysis..
It is essentially step 4 and it says "Do not unplug for any reasons." I am pretty much a starter with this stuff so I don't know how to go about this. I even tried to search for some answers but could not find them.
Any suggestions would really help me! What should I do? Should I scroll in the recovery mode for something? Should I unplug the phone? help pleasee

Unplug the phone, close odin, re open odin, boot phone into download mode, plug in phone odin should see it and then hit start.

Im going to try this now. Also, I have Phoenix unleashed 6.8 and when I hold the power button there is an option for download, is that okay to use?

That sounds okay. Just make sure usb is plugged in and odin is open before you select download. You should hear the usb disconnect as it reboots and when it comes back it should give you a com port in odin.

Well, it didn't do that. but random question: which USb bit should I have downloaded. I'm working with a MacBook Pro using VM fusion

when I just plugged in my phone not in download, it Odin found the phone. But when I put it into discovery, Odin lost it. Any suggestions?

Unistall drivers, reboot, reinstall, reboot. Try that.

I have tried this many times, I am always in download mode before I bring up Odin and connect. The only way I can get into download mode now is to hold down the up and down volume and insert usb, then I disconnect usb, bring up odin, it connects and I press start and the above message is where it hangs..Have I bricked this device?

fix bricked cappy

i had to do the 3 resisitor home made trick to get the download shovel guy back but what do i wipe it with to put new rom on?
Wipe it with ODIN. This will get you back to stock AT&T build. You can then follow the steps on this tutorial to install a new ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
The download for ODIN is in that page.

odin first hung forever at processing files then finaly 1 time it finaly went past that and said looking at pit files and sat there forever i unplugged usb now when i plug back in pc doesnt see it or odin or anything but the shovel guy is still on screen
are you using ODIN 1 click or the original ODIN where you have to select the PIT and PDA files you want to flash?
are you starting ODIN first, before you plug in your phone and running as admin?
just tried as admin with odin execution v1.00 plugged in after odin was open no go
no go as in ODIN doesn't recognize your phone?
From what I understand, you tried the first flash and it got to the PIT file and then you unplugged it once it froze. Since then, you haven't rebooted your phone.
One thing first: You cannot plug your phone in after it is in Download mode and have Odin work. You must put your phone into Download mode after both Odin is open and the phone is plugged in.
Now; to get your phone into download mode.
Unplug the phone from the computer and remove the battery, SIM, and external SD if there is one.
1. Open Odin one click.
2. Plug the phone in (without the battery in the phone). Do not press any buttons, especially the power button.
3. Press and hold the volume rocker (holding down both volume up and down).
4. Insert the battery while holding the volume rocker.
5. The phone should boot into download mode. You can then let go of the volume rocker.
Now wait 30 seconds (if you press "Start" too soon, it will not work). Then press "Start" and your flash should finish.
im in downloader mode now but on captivate all in one or just odin exeuction 1.00 it hangs at examing files
dont ask me how, because im not even sure how i did it but after much trial and error im back in the saddle again, flashed back to stock, then put paragon 6 on so im all set again...

[Q] HELP!!!Cannot restore to stock ROM

Hi there I got a Samsung captivate SGH-I897 and I got a custom rom installer from Rom Kitchen. I wanted to go back to stock rom but once i get into download mode the phone not loading the rom ODIN stays in DO NOT TURN OFF THE TARGET!please help get out of that and use my phone again!the Base Rom i Used on custom rom is XWJS5 v9.6 with Firebird Kernel
Thank you for your time
close odin 1 click, unplug phone leave it in d/l mode, open odin plug phone back into usb, you should see a com port then like 7 or 3 or something. then hit start. Sometimes I have to repeat process 3 or 4 times before odin works right. if it isnt doing anything unplug it, remove battery put battery back in hold volume buttons down when u plug it back into usb and should go back to d/l mode. make sure odin is opened first.
I ve tried all these the problem is that I am at Phone - ! - PC and its hard to get to Download Mode but after many tries I all of a sudden I get in that mode then nothing more I can do!
Does Odin recognize the phone when you connect the USB cable when your phone is in download mode? Also which OS is your PC running? I was having an issue with Odin not pushing the stock rom and I had to start it as administrator in Win 7 to get it to work.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes DOES recognize the phone but not pushing the ROM on it!I am on Windows 7 and i always run ODIN as Admin!
Any ideas?
I've heard Odin can be flaky and may take several attempts before it will work. I would keep trying. Also possibly change which USB port you are using on your computer and see if that helps. I was in this exact same scenario last week. I would turn on the phone and get the computer/phone/exclamation point of death screen. I couldn't get the phone to boot or into download mode without using a JIG. Finally on about the third try Odin worked for me. I started Odin as admin and almost as soon as I plugged in the phone to USB I hit flash and it worked. Best of luck...
Odin is not flaky. It works if you follow instructions. It's the user's fault, not the software.
Anyway, this is probably the ten millionth time I've posted this in the last hour, but here's how to get into download mode if nothing else works. If this doesn't work, you hard bricked your phone and would need a JTAG flash.

my phone is in download mode but odin hung once i unplugge and plugged back in ever since phone isnt see by odin or pc?
Yes, as I stated in my post above; you must reboot your phone every single time you go into Download mode. What I mean by that is that if you go into Download mode and plug your phone in, then unplug it, you cannot plug your phone back in unless you reboot your phone.

Didn't realize that you weren't the OP. Regardless, I was referring to you.
Anyway, this is a more serious case than I thought. Have you used the AIO Captivate Tool? If so, did you install the LibUSB drivers? Those will disable Odin from working (I'm probably going to PM Bay_wolf sometime soon about that...).
Do get everything working again:
Plug the phone in while it's in Download mode. Open the start menu, right click on "Computer", and click "Manage". In the left sidebar, select "Device Manager".
There will be a dropdown labeled "LibUSB Devices" or something with the word libusb in it. Find that dropdown, right click the Samsung USB Device or whatever it's called and select "Update Driver Software...". Then select "Search automatically for updated driver software."
An alternative is to just use the "Flash to Stock" option in the AIO tool. This and the above is assuming that you had used the AIO Tool and installed the LibUSB drivers previously. If you have not, then you may have to try and re-install the Samsung drivers. If that doesn't work, ask to borrow a friend's computer for now to flash back to stock, because this happened to me before and I didn't know how to fix it, but I was about to re-install Windows anyway so I never figured it out.
im on xp and pc sees my cappy but odin execution 1.00 is stuck on examing files is there another version i should be trying? if it helps this is what i was trying to get off my phone when the crap hit the fan http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940330 and i tried to put paragon 6 on and it kept erring because i needed to do a odin job first on it
I finally managed to turn my phone on last nigh by doing the following:
1.Open Odin
2.Get in download mode (it took me many tries but finally I made it)
3.Disconnect phone
4.Reconnect phone
5.Choose the PIT file
6.Uncheck Auto Reboot
7.Hit Start
After that I took out the battery put it back again and power up.the phone will boot but not show the main screen it will only vibrate!then i used the AIO pack to put it back in recovery mode and i reinstalled the Custom Firmware I was using. Now is on and working again!I really dont know now if I can flash back to stock!

did you use thee pitfile came with odin in the all in one or did you select another pitfile if you used a differnt pitfile then comes with odin 1.00 that might be my issue
No no I dont use this on I use one I had on my PC.
I think the problem is a write protection as I can see when i connect the phone it displays a CDROM drive when I click on it, opens ok but I cant write anything on the phone.and every time I try to use ODIN to flash to stock it stays in DO NOT TURN OFF THE TARGET and nothing happens!
Any ideas on how to get back to stock firmware?

[Q] help with odin3 from aio...what should i do?

so i decide to flash a new rom ff2.6, and decide to use aio to do it. load program, click flash to stock, then odin3 and click start. now my phone is in the download screen (android dude in triangle digging). i wait, then wait then wait somemore (about 20min).
in the message section it says
Code:
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
what should i do?
Sounds like nothing was flashed. Its there a blue status bar under the android with shovel?
Have you ever used odin before?
CM7
no i havent use odin before but read up on it. I flashed cog2.16 the old way, and keep it that way since today.
no blue status bar.
ok, please list steps you followed to flash odin, and what happened when you hit start
CM7
Make sure your phone is on Download Mode (the android guy in the triangle), turn on ODIN first then plug in your USB. Try again that way.
so i open AIO then click flash to stock.
then i picked the 1click
clicked start and i get
Code:
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)
this screen is on my phone...
is it okay to disconnect?
Nothing has been flashed.
Un plug usb, pull battery. Under your battery there is a white sticker. On the left side near the top there is number, something between 1006 & 1102. What is it. If it is 1009 and lower continue, if 1010 and higher tell me.
If lower
Un plug usb
get into download
Click flash stock and get odin open
Plug phone in
A box in odin should change colors and say com
Click start
CM7
If it's 1009 or lower, follow these instructions:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SBSMALFJ
1. Install the drivers if you do not already have them. When they are done installing restart your computer. You can find these drivers in the drivers folder of your downloaded folder (Install either the 32bit or 64bit version).
2. Go to the downloaded folder and open ODIN.exe
3. Get into download mode by using one of the three methods shown below. There is a known bug that some people are not able to get into download mode. If the three button thing does not work, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
4. Open odin and plug in your phone. Wait 30 seconds or so for your phone to register (when it does one of those strange squares at the top will fill in with seemingly meaningless numbers and letters).
5. Press start and wait until it is finished. Do not unplug for any reason.
Really though, you should look around. It's all in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364

[Q] Odin3 one-click downloader just froze, any ideas?

Hello, I was going back to stock from 2.2, just like I used to do, opened the good old odin and hitted start. It beggan as usual, printed:
<ID:0/016> Added!!
<ID:0/016> Odin v.3 engine (ID:16)..
<ID:0/016> File analysis..
<ID:0/016> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/016> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
and it is being there for the last 5 minutes...
should i restart odin, the phone and try to do it all over again? or is it to late and I should be preparing myself to unbrick my phone?
thx in advance
As long as it's not on boot.bin or sbl.bin you SHOULD be "safe" to disconnect, reboot your computer and try again.
You seem fine. As long as it doesn't say that it's installing sbl.bin and boot.bin (not sure baout the 2nd). You can unplug and restart.
If it freezes at one the 2 above and you unplug, you phone will be bricked and the only way back will be a JTAG (force bootloaders in).
I suggest you use a different usb port/cable and even restart your computer.
EDIT: Damn you Studa
mmm I took out the phone and now i think it is soft bricked now, phone ! computer, though i just managed to put it back in download mode by holding the volume buttons and plugging in the cable, now it is back on stock

Code:
Odin v.3 engine (ID:24)..
File analysis..
Set PIT file..
DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
This is exactly the state of my ODIN window when I was attempting to flash JF6 from the current Continuum 5 ROM.
Now, I have a phone that does nothing. The power button, volume buttom combo doesnt work it seems. Would a JIG help instead? Any opinions.
I am scared
If your phone exhibits no signs of life at all, Then you need to jtag unbrick your phone...
If you get the phone-!-computer thing on boot, you could just build/buy a jig and force it into download mode

Your phone could be soft bricked. I has a similar issue. You need to get the phone into download mode. If you can not do this via 3 button combo, you will need a jig. You can search xda for instructions on building your own jig (faster), or simply buy one. It may be cheaper to buy one.

The update is - I can do into download mode by pressing the volume down key and power key.
It gets into the yellow download mode, but ODIN3 doesn't work. It now gets stuck at "File Analysis"
Make sure the chord is good, and that is plugged into the back of the pc, not a front usb port. If it's already in the back go ahead and switch ports (still on the back) restart your computer.

Its a laptop am using, restarted 10 times. installed samsung usb drivers. tried all the ports. DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET on the phone and the laptop screen.
some times the laptop doesn't even recognise the USB device
All this had happened while flashing the stock jf6 rom
just wondering, are you doing it in the exact order of
1- put phone in download mode - via vol down/power
2- open odin on computer
3- connect usb cable to phone
4- Start button
and when you say sometimes your computer does no recognize your phone, does it show up in the device manager as an unrecognized device or just do nothing at all? If it does nothing at all half the time, go invest in a new usb cable.
i'm not sure how to fix it. but if you had continuum and want to go back to stock, i read somewhere that you can't use Odin3 (something about bootloaders).
i would try to use odin 1.7 to flash GR/Continuum rom.
(but check it with others cause i'm quite newbie)

He can use Odin one click, not the Odin with the button fix. FYI everytime you use Odin one click back to stock 2.1 you're flashing your bootloaders. The problem with the button fix is it only flashes the secondary bootloader leaving the primary bootloader untouched. This is only a problem if you've updated to the.GB bootloaders because you cannot mix Eclair/Froyo bootloader with a Gingerbread bootloader.
