i had to do the 3 resisitor home made trick to get the download shovel guy back but what do i wipe it with to put new rom on?
Wipe it with ODIN. This will get you back to stock AT&T build. You can then follow the steps on this tutorial to install a new ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
The download for ODIN is in that page.

odin first hung forever at processing files then finaly 1 time it finaly went past that and said looking at pit files and sat there forever i unplugged usb now when i plug back in pc doesnt see it or odin or anything but the shovel guy is still on screen
are you using ODIN 1 click or the original ODIN where you have to select the PIT and PDA files you want to flash?
are you starting ODIN first, before you plug in your phone and running as admin?
just tried as admin with odin execution v1.00 plugged in after odin was open no go
no go as in ODIN doesn't recognize your phone?
From what I understand, you tried the first flash and it got to the PIT file and then you unplugged it once it froze. Since then, you haven't rebooted your phone.
One thing first: You cannot plug your phone in after it is in Download mode and have Odin work. You must put your phone into Download mode after both Odin is open and the phone is plugged in.
Now; to get your phone into download mode.
Unplug the phone from the computer and remove the battery, SIM, and external SD if there is one.
1. Open Odin one click.
2. Plug the phone in (without the battery in the phone). Do not press any buttons, especially the power button.
3. Press and hold the volume rocker (holding down both volume up and down).
4. Insert the battery while holding the volume rocker.
5. The phone should boot into download mode. You can then let go of the volume rocker.
Now wait 30 seconds (if you press "Start" too soon, it will not work). Then press "Start" and your flash should finish.
im in downloader mode now but on captivate all in one or just odin exeuction 1.00 it hangs at examing files
dont ask me how, because im not even sure how i did it but after much trial and error im back in the saddle again, flashed back to stock, then put paragon 6 on so im all set again...

My Captivate became the brick by failure of the recovery.
The screen remains black.
The power button and volume buttons no response.
In Japan, I cannot repair it.

step one. get odin3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
step two install drivers if you dont already have the drivers on your computer, there are manual driver install tutorials online, google it
3. extract files and start odin.exe
4. put .pit file in the slot labled pit
5. put .tar file in the pda slot
6. plug usb data cable into computer, not into phone yet.
7. pull battery and put it back in,
8. hold volume up and volume down, insert data cable into phone and continue to hold the volume up+down buttons for at least 5 seconds. it should be in download mode. normally you have a yellow sign with a robot holding a shovel but i once had a black screen and odin still saw the device
odin will light up a box showing you are connected and the text should also indicate you are connected.
if not you may need to take other measures for download mode see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829492&page=3
9. once you are in download and odin sees the phone hit start to flash the phone.
if the flash is not successful try to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989&highlight=odin+click+stock+rom+jf6 instead, master clear if at all possible
It is not a download mode.
Odin3 many times I used to change the ROM, all of which succeeded.
This time, ClockWorkMod Recovery in ROM from microSD installed, black screen freezes when it reboot.
From then on, things that can both download mode button.
Also, USB does not respond to the command prompt can also ADB.
Thank you.

try building the adapter in the thread i posted, supposedly it forces download mode. also it is posible to be in download mode with a screen that is black, it happened to me once, try to flash it anyway.
you might need to take a trip to akihabara to build the jig but it's worth it i think.
also if the phone starts to a black screen then master clear it with odin one-click on that screen.
thanks for the info. saved my phone. thanks
Thank you for giving good advice!!

Maybe not. I thought I was there too.
Keep trying the battery pull method. It took several times before it finally worked for me.
Here's one version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9024244&postcount=7
but you can try other button combinations (like just volume up, or just volume down).
If you don't see anything on your screen, that doesn't mean it hasn't worked. Sometimes the graphic for download mode gets screwed up so the screen will still be black, but ODIN will still recognize the phone.
If you really are hard bricked, then you need jtag service. MobileTechVideos can do it for you.

Make/buy a Jig (forces the phone in to Download mode) if that doesn't work then like startngate said you will need a Jtag to fix it.
thanks for the reply i took it into a samsung certified repair tech here in the city he has a jtag machine. odin wouldnt recognize my device at all
I was trying to switch to Cognition V.2.3.8 using clockwork recovery like was shown on that thread. I did everything correctly and everything worked exactly like was explained. I got to where it was loading the zip in clockwork mod and it froze. Now my phone only gets the ATT screen when turned on and it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to just the recovery screen, but the phone is cleared, nothing will boot, all info was wiped I'm assuming that's including the previously flashed version of cognition. I tried Odin but couldn't really get it going. Not sure what to do. I used Odin for my last ROM, and clock work recovery didn't go quite as well obviously. Please someone give me some good news, and help me unbrick my phone.
Have you tried doing any of the three button combos to get into download mode and restore to stock possibly?..if none of the buttons work, you might have to make/use a jig to get it into download mode. Anyway, just try getting into download and try to restore to stock for now.
Your phone needs to be in "Download" mode to use Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Scroll down to step 1 and try those "Key Combinations" until one of them gets you into download mode. Once you are in, flash back to stock with Odin. Hopefully that works and solves your problem.
If no key combos work, then you need a jig. My phone is one of the few that don't work with the key combos, while my last 2 did fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889128
Like the others stated you need to be in DOWNLOAD MODE to get Odin to work.
Also there is a specific method to get Odin to recognize your device and then flash it back to stock:
Turn on ODIN first.
Do NOT have your phone plugged in when Odin is started.
Make sure your phone is powered off.
Hold down the Volume +/- Buttons on your phone then plug in your USB cord. It should go directly into DOWNLOAD MODE and Odin should state that your phone is connected.
Click the Go button and watch Odin do it's magic.
If that didnt work....
Try the "Battery Trick"
Unplug the phone from USB - Power it off.
Pull the battery, SIM, and SDCard (if applicable) from your phone.
Turn on Odin
Plug in the phone to USB Cord (with everything still out of it)
Hold down the VOLUME +/- Buttons
Then while doing all this - pop the battery back in the back of your phone.
Rinse and repeat a few times if it doesn't go directly into DOWNLOAD MODE to make sure you are doing this correctly.
And if THAT doesn't work.
Do the jig (Build a jig - there are a ton of posts here in the Q&A and Q&A sticky on how to do this.)
Alright, i ****ed up (next time ill read the whole thing)
This is what i did
"The steps to flashing a stock firmware are already described in a couple of other threads, like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
Nonetheless, here a quick sum-up of what you have to do:
2.1. Open up Odin.
2.2. Put your phone in the "Download mode" with the 3-button-combo (Volume Down + Home + Power).
2.3. Connect your phone to your computer (DO NOT CONNECT THE PHONE BEFORE OPENING ODIN OR THIS WILL NOT WORK).
2.4. Odin should recognize your phone and one of the "com" boxes should light up yellow. If this isn't the case, try repeating the previous steps and eventually connect your phone to another USB port.
2.5. Select your firmware in Odin.
2.5.1. --OPTIONAL-- If you want your phone to be like new, you can select "Re-Partition" in Odin, which will make it repartition your Internal SD. In this case you also have to use a .pit file (WARNING -- you will lose all of your installed applications and settings).
2.6. Take a deep breath and click the "Start" button.
2.7. Wait for the firmware to be flashed and for the device to be restarted.
2.8. You now have a stock firmware. If you also selected "Re-Partition" in Odin, all your programs and settings will be gone and your device will be like new.
After this. my phone restartet. and some andriod installing startet, HOWEVER...
my battery was low so it booted off...
So now when i start it, i cant go back to 3 button download mode. (doesnt work?)
-it seems to start Normal'ish. everything is insanely slow. but it works..
when i plug in the Power, it turns itself off..
alright, i need some brain on this, how to sort it. any help is awesomepants
Firstly, always flash with a full battery. Make sure that it's fully charged for this.
Now, download android SDK here http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Next, connect the phone to the computer and type "adb reboot download" (no quotes)
Then unplug the phone from the computer, start Odin, get your PIT and PDA files, tick re-partition, connect the phone back to the computer, and flash.
Hit the "thanks" button if it worked, PM me if it didn't.
Turns itself off when i insert the usb-.-
i got the AT&T logon screen.. cant get to 3 button download mode..
is there any hope..?

Hi there I got a Samsung captivate SGH-I897 and I got a custom rom installer from Rom Kitchen. I wanted to go back to stock rom but once i get into download mode the phone not loading the rom ODIN stays in DO NOT TURN OFF THE TARGET!please help get out of that and use my phone again!the Base Rom i Used on custom rom is XWJS5 v9.6 with Firebird Kernel
Thank you for your time
close odin 1 click, unplug phone leave it in d/l mode, open odin plug phone back into usb, you should see a com port then like 7 or 3 or something. then hit start. Sometimes I have to repeat process 3 or 4 times before odin works right. if it isnt doing anything unplug it, remove battery put battery back in hold volume buttons down when u plug it back into usb and should go back to d/l mode. make sure odin is opened first.
I ve tried all these the problem is that I am at Phone - ! - PC and its hard to get to Download Mode but after many tries I all of a sudden I get in that mode then nothing more I can do!
Does Odin recognize the phone when you connect the USB cable when your phone is in download mode? Also which OS is your PC running? I was having an issue with Odin not pushing the stock rom and I had to start it as administrator in Win 7 to get it to work.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes DOES recognize the phone but not pushing the ROM on it!I am on Windows 7 and i always run ODIN as Admin!
Any ideas?
I've heard Odin can be flaky and may take several attempts before it will work. I would keep trying. Also possibly change which USB port you are using on your computer and see if that helps. I was in this exact same scenario last week. I would turn on the phone and get the computer/phone/exclamation point of death screen. I couldn't get the phone to boot or into download mode without using a JIG. Finally on about the third try Odin worked for me. I started Odin as admin and almost as soon as I plugged in the phone to USB I hit flash and it worked. Best of luck...
Odin is not flaky. It works if you follow instructions. It's the user's fault, not the software.
Anyway, this is probably the ten millionth time I've posted this in the last hour, but here's how to get into download mode if nothing else works. If this doesn't work, you hard bricked your phone and would need a JTAG flash.

my phone is in download mode but odin hung once i unplugge and plugged back in ever since phone isnt see by odin or pc?
Yes, as I stated in my post above; you must reboot your phone every single time you go into Download mode. What I mean by that is that if you go into Download mode and plug your phone in, then unplug it, you cannot plug your phone back in unless you reboot your phone.

Didn't realize that you weren't the OP. Regardless, I was referring to you.
Anyway, this is a more serious case than I thought. Have you used the AIO Captivate Tool? If so, did you install the LibUSB drivers? Those will disable Odin from working (I'm probably going to PM Bay_wolf sometime soon about that...).
Do get everything working again:
Plug the phone in while it's in Download mode. Open the start menu, right click on "Computer", and click "Manage". In the left sidebar, select "Device Manager".
There will be a dropdown labeled "LibUSB Devices" or something with the word libusb in it. Find that dropdown, right click the Samsung USB Device or whatever it's called and select "Update Driver Software...". Then select "Search automatically for updated driver software."
An alternative is to just use the "Flash to Stock" option in the AIO tool. This and the above is assuming that you had used the AIO Tool and installed the LibUSB drivers previously. If you have not, then you may have to try and re-install the Samsung drivers. If that doesn't work, ask to borrow a friend's computer for now to flash back to stock, because this happened to me before and I didn't know how to fix it, but I was about to re-install Windows anyway so I never figured it out.
im on xp and pc sees my cappy but odin execution 1.00 is stuck on examing files is there another version i should be trying? if it helps this is what i was trying to get off my phone when the crap hit the fan http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940330 and i tried to put paragon 6 on and it kept erring because i needed to do a odin job first on it
I finally managed to turn my phone on last nigh by doing the following:
1.Open Odin
2.Get in download mode (it took me many tries but finally I made it)
3.Disconnect phone
4.Reconnect phone
5.Choose the PIT file
6.Uncheck Auto Reboot
7.Hit Start
After that I took out the battery put it back again and power up.the phone will boot but not show the main screen it will only vibrate!then i used the AIO pack to put it back in recovery mode and i reinstalled the Custom Firmware I was using. Now is on and working again!I really dont know now if I can flash back to stock!

did you use thee pitfile came with odin in the all in one or did you select another pitfile if you used a differnt pitfile then comes with odin 1.00 that might be my issue
No no I dont use this on I use one I had on my PC.
I think the problem is a write protection as I can see when i connect the phone it displays a CDROM drive when I click on it, opens ok but I cant write anything on the phone.and every time I try to use ODIN to flash to stock it stays in DO NOT TURN OFF THE TARGET and nothing happens!
Any ideas on how to get back to stock firmware?
So this morning I was using my phone as normal when it froze. Then I rebooted and it just stays bootlooping. I'm using a recent nightly of CM9 and I can't enter recovery mode to reflash the phone. How do I install CM9 using Odin? Is there any other software for that? I can enter download mode just fine.
gcuchiha said:
Maybe its a boot loop. Switch off your phone and check if download and recovery mode is available(see next paragraph).
If so follow the steps mentioned.
First of all download xxjw4 firmware for galaxy gt-I9000 from
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/150483619/708026d/I9000XXJW4_I9000OXAJW4_XEU.zip.html
1) Put your phone into Recovery mode (Vol up + Home + Power button) and perform a Wipe data/Factory reset, then a Wipe cache. When done pull the battery out for around ten seconds then re-insert.
(If recovery isn't working ignore this step)
2) Put the phone into Download mode (Vol down + Home + Power button)
3) Unzip the JW4 firmware folder you've downloaded to your Desktop.
4) Launch Odin and click on the button that says PDA and navigate to the PDA file you've just unzipped to your desktop and select it.
5) Connect your phone to your PC via USB. Odin will say Added and a box will turn yellow to indicate it has recognised your phone.
6) Click the start button in Odin and sit back and wait for Odin to flash your phone. When it's finished it will take a few minutes longer for the phone to reboot than is usual so please don't panic. The phone will reboot.
7) When the phone has rebooted, remove the USB cable and you now have the latest 2.3.6. It might be a good idea to repeat step 1 to make sure nothing of the old firmware is left behind.
And that's it, seven steps to 2.3.6 JW4 Value Pack and TouchWiz 4.
In case you want more info about flashing go to this site

try different USB port. Or different USB cable. Or other computer.
